Colnik had come from Austria to the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. After winning awards for several pieces, including his famous “Masterpiece” he found his way to Milwaukee, where a string of commissions would convince him to stay. He made his life and home here and his work is still standing all over the city. Milwaukee’s Villa Terrace Museum is dedicated to Cyril’s work, founded on the collection of his daughter Gretchen who left the pieces for this purpose upon her passing.

Kent’s passion for Milwaukee’s history and connection to it’s beautiful ironwork is infectious and can already see that love in his son’s eyes when they repeat what they have heard about any given house. The family’s goal is to revive this almost lost art form and to pass down the old school techniques combined with just a few modern conve-niences, incorporated for safe-ty. Knapp has already answered the call to replicate Colnik’s work and produce new pieces to match existing on some of Milwaukee’s finest homes.

Kent and Shannon run the shop with a great deal of team-work, covering all the details of the running an office and the producing functional art of this magnitude. The children are often called on for tasks, each in their area of strength. Zoey and Miles, the teenagers, often help with office work or heavy lifting. The younger boys, Birdie and Oscar have been in the shop for years already and participated with dad at the Grohmann Museum Lost Arts Festival, where they demonstrated techniques for reclaiming used metal and turning into beautiful hooks, candle holders, bottle open-ers, etc. Oscar has already sold some of his pieces, his flair for the industrial look along with the lessons of his father, producing work that has caught the interest of others.

MILWAUKEE Blacksmith: Kent Knapp

Kent Knapp and his wife Shannon

Kent Knapp has been studying blacksmithing since he was 19 years old. After working with a master blacksmith for a few years in Milwaukee, he lost touch with his art when his took his wife and 2 kids to New Orleans. After 10 years there, he returned to Milwaukee with his wife and 4 children and picked it up again. Stepping right back into beat with the man who had originally taught him, Knapp realized this art was going to be very important to him. When told his teacher would be selling his tools and leaving Milwaukee, the time was right for his own shop.

A huge part of the draw to this art form for this family is Kent’s love for Milwaukee architecture and her rich history with iron. In 1893 Milwaukee was growing. The beer business was booming and the families that led that industry wanted large ornate houses covered in the ironwork of Cyril Colnik.

WELCOME!

Welcome to the first issue of Tattooed Art & Culture.

This was a long journey of well over three years of planning and execution, and now that we have launched, we are chang-ing things again, and again.

“So why does the world need another tattoo magazine? There are so many out there.”

“… yes, but there is nothing like this that you have ever seen before. We have been setting the standards in every magazine arena that we launch, from luxury lifestyles, to security, and PC computing.

… besides, we own it and we can do what we want without the approval of a few cynics out there.”

From the Publisher,

Ever since I was a teenager I had wanted a tattoo, but back then the law was that a person had to be 18, and my parents would never allow it. So after I turned 18, I joined the Marine Corps. After boot camp, when everyone was told not to go get a tattoo, and half the platoon went to get a “Devil Dog” on their body, I ventured to New Orleans for Mardi gras. Lo and behold, 19 hours later I ended up with my first tattoo as well. It wasn’t a Devil Dog, however. Since then this tat-too has been added to, and has grown into what I call a piece of art on my back.

We have been publishing magazines since 1999, and it was about time we start-ed publishing a magazine that we are very passionate about: the world of tat-toos and tattooing. So I hope you all enjoy reading our publication, looking at our pictorials, and appreciate the world that we intend to capture. Our year ahead will be focusing on interviews, stories, products, shops, and artists that no one has heard of yet. There are so many talented tattooists in the world who have been unrecognized that should be seen.

Not to mention that we will have an online directory for each and every shop in the world one day where readers can find everything they need to know about that tattoo “parlor.” We noticed that every other magazine out there seems to lack such a directory; well, that’s their fault. We have no problem being the first place you go before you get your next tattoo or piercing, just to make sure that artist is the right fit for you. From tattooing to piercing, we have you covered.

We will be printing our publication starting in March of this year and will be mail-ing it to more than 25,000 shops across the United States. If for any reason you would like to reach out to us to submit your work or refer someone else’s work, please do. I’m always available to each and every reader.

Feel free to email me directly anytime at: [email protected]

Regards,

John Oliver

ONE-ON-ONE WITH RACHELLE HOFFMAN Occupation: Piercer / Shop ownerLocation: Phoenix, Arizona Age: Young & spry

TAC: What’s your favorite style of tattoo?

Hoffman: “My favorite tattoo style would be realism; I have it all over me, and plan to cover my entire body in that style as well.”

TAC: How many piercings do you have?

Hoffman: “Currently I have about 60 piercings.”

TAC: If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would you be?

Hoffman: “If I could be anywhere in the world right now I would love to be in Disneyworld. It is one of my favorite places ever.”

TAC: Most memorable moment?

Hoffman: “My most memorable moment would probably have to be when my son was born.”

TAC: If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would that person be?

Hoffman: “Although I have already met him briefly, I would love to meet Rob Zombie again, the first time was just too quick and rushed, and he is my idol for sure.”

TAC: How many tattoos do you personally have?

Hoffman: “I don’t know how many tattoos I have they all connect but I have about 300 hours total worth of work on them so far.”

TAC: Tell us something that no one knows about you?

Hoffman: “Something that one knows about me, I would have to say...I have a huge obsession with Disney. Looking at me no one ever really sees that or would guess, however its right up there with my love for horror movies.”

TAC: If you could be any super hero or comic book charac-ter who would you chose?

Hoffman: “I don’t follow the super hero’s or comics much to know enough about them to say who I would want to be, but if I had to pick a favorite I would say it’s the Hulk.”

TAC: What’s your most valuable possession?

Hoffman: “My most valued possession…that is a tough one. Probably the items left to me by my best friend and my grandmother when they passed away.”

TAC: What are some of your goals for 2014?

Hoffman: “My goals for this year would be to push my mod-eling career to the next level, finish a good chunk of my tattoos … hopefully my entire left leg, and push my shop and get the name out there more and more.”

TAC: “Well we hope that this interview helps you do just that Rachelle! To see Rachelle and get a piercing by her, or a tattoo from one of her shop artists you can find her at: www.ritualaddictions.com

for-speed baby stroller.

Clad like a tuned-out 50s muscle car, the unusually ornate baby buggy looks more at home in the parking lot of a hot rod convention than the neighborhood park. Unlike those fuel-injected, V8 engine numbers, though, it’s all for show. At least, I hope. Otherwise, say hello to Child Services, my friend.

The Roddler comes with all the trimmings that you can only ever find splattered across the bodies of classic gas guz-

zlers - fin-shaped fenders, white wall tires, chrome wheels, wheel bullets, ultra-suede seat inserts and a car-like chassis. Since it’s actually a stroller, it also has baby-friendly fare, including a comfy seat (carbon vinyl leatherette), a protective top (carbon vi-nyl leatherette, too) and chrome grips for whoever’s strolling the kid around.

Heck, the thing looks more pimped-out than any car I’ve owned, especially for something that will likely be used for only a year or so. According to Kid Kustoms though, you can order a $500 kit thatcon-

verts the pushchair into a trike, allowing you to attach it to your future barnburner’s bicycle when he’s ready to hit the streets. That way, he can begin giving rides to all the cute little girls around the neighborhood.

Available in various designs and colors, The Roddler is cur-rently available for $1,999.

Puma Ink On Suede Puts Tattoos On Your Sneakers First released in 1968, the Puma Suede continues to reign as the brand’s most recognizable model. Like many iconic sneakers, it’s got-ten plenty of reissues and special

Gnarboards Trail Rider 4 Wheel Drive Electric Skate-boardThe Gnarboards Trail Rider is a 64-pound 4WD electric skateboard that measures 47 x 16.5 x 10.5 inch-es and weighs 86 pounds. It prob-ably qualifies more as a rec-reational transporter than an X-Games prop, especially with four electric motors that pro-duce 850 watts of output each powering the rider to a 0 to 28 mph acceleration time of 1.9 seconds. On-board battery allows it to run for up to 16 miles on a single charge.

Corbus Skateboards Think skateboards can do better than just come in the same familiar deck shapes? So does Corbus Skateboards, who specialize in crafting unusually-shaped aluminum boards that offer similar weight and rideability as their more con-ventional counterparts.

Customized skateboards usually meant sticking some unique graphic on the thing. These new boards, on the other hard, extend the design to the body itself, relegating all that admittedly cool skateboard art into the back of the pack when it comes to looking more awesome.

The Roddler: A Hot Rod Stroller “When my son grows up, he will be a tattooed gearhead with a pompadour and a greasy scarf hanging from his backpocket.” If that sounds anything like you talking about your newborn child, better get them started early with The Roddler, a hot rod-style, built-

editions throughout the years. So far, though, the Puma Ink on Suede series has to be my favorite.

Like the first two installments of these special edition kicks, the shoes feature the model’s time-less design, paired with tattoo graphics printed on the insides and soles. Not only are these limited editions, these are also the last of the Ink on Suede series, making it a must-score for sneakerheads of all shapes and sizes. Three designs come with the new series, with each shoe sporting tattoo graphics from either Davide di Stefano, Rino Valente or Heinz. Stefano’s goofy cartoon design comes with a black upper, Valente’s traditional fire and skull on gray, and Heinz’s Americana eagle on a cream colorway.

good as the body art it’s used to create. Made from an-odized aircraft aluminum, stainless steel, and other plastics and rubber, the Neuma Hybrid features optimized air flow for better torque and higher speeds, variable stroke length,

a variable cushioning armature, a stunning design, and more, all adding up to a less painful, quicker-healing tattoo.

Nixon Gunship WatchesLike the disturbingly large number of trusty warships cruising the world’s oceans, the new line of Nixon Gunship Watches ($190-$500) are made to age with charac-ter. The special finishes of the oversized 51-30 Chrono, the subdued Sentry, the triple-movement Banks, and the sporty Player are designed to wear increasingly as you wear them, giving each an appearance that’s as unique as it is rugged — unfortu-nately, we can’t wear the badass 51-30 pic-tured above, as it makes our twig-like wrists look even tinier.

Ink ButterYou paid plenty to get your ink done in a reputable shop, so why aren’t you spending a minimal amount to make sure it stays in tip-top shape? Ink Butter ($18) is specially formulat-ed to heal your tattoo and nourish your skin, with essential minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Unless, of course, you were going for the aging sailor look.

Tattoo GooPreserve your new ink with the Tattoo Goo Color Guard SPF 30 UV Sunscreen Stick ($7). This stuff will give you ample fade protection, making sure your three Zune tattoos stay looking classy.

Bell’s Hopslam AleIt’s that time of year, the time when beer drinkers who crave large amounts of hops in their bever-ages rejoice,

because Bell’s Hopslam Ale is hitting store shelves. Released every January, Hopslam is a dou-ble IPA with a demand that con-tinues to grow. Hopslam starts with six different hop varietals, each selected in large part due to the aromatic qualities they possess. After a big dry-hop addition at the end, Bell’s adds a helping of honey to balance out the bite and give this 10% ABV hop bomb the balance that makes it special.

Black DLC Rolex WatchesIf you loved the Bamford Black Rolex Watches we wrote about a while back but don’t have quite enough coin to pick one up, consider one of these Black DLC Rolex Watches ($6,000 and up). For roughly half the price of the Bamford, you can get a Submariner, Sea-Dweller, Explorer II, GMT-II, or Milgauss, all of which have been treated using an advanced process to apply a super-hard, military-grade “Diamond Like Carbon” coating that gives the watches their unique stealth black finish.

How to tell tomorrow’s time today. The Compendium’s stun-ning dial blends an analog face with a stylish digital display. Three ultra-bright luminous hands keep time along the in-ner dial, while a trio of circular LCD windows track the hour,

minutes and seconds. An eye-catching digital semi-circle animates in time with the second hand and displays the day of the week. On your wrist it looks so-phisticated enough for a formal evening out, but rugged and tough enough to feel at home in a cockpit or on a covert mission.

Your satisfaction is 100% GUARAN-TEED. If for any reason you aren’t ful-ly impressed by the performance and innovation of the Stauer Compendium Hybrid, simply return the watch within 30 days for a full refund of the purchase price. The future of time has arrived!

MINTI am a shoe. A really good looking shoe, if I may say so myself. Much better look-ing than my owner but let’s keep that to ourselves. Look at my bright clean color and if my owner gets me dirty, all that is needed is a quick bath and a little scrub

with some soap and I am as perfect as ever. My owner seems to really like my thick cushy soles, and I have a special feature on the inside my owner just loves little acupuncture style ridges to massage the foot. I enjoy making my owner’s feet look so attractive because God knows those feet need it. My own-er is pretty active. I cover a lot of miles walking, running, on skateboards, bikes. Sometimes I get all sandy, but I just get rinsed off and I’m fine again. I’ve been in showers, beaches, pools I

Once upon a time, we were forced to choose sides. New technology demanded a decision. You pledged allegiance to analog or dedicated yourself to digital. You either listened to vinyl records or mp3s. You tapped on a touch screen or pounded the keys of an old typewriter. And your watch, it either had hands that moved or num-bers that blinked. But never both. That just wasn’t an option. Thanks in part to a TVS series 2300 (2.3-liter) supercharger that provides 14.0 psi of maximum boost, the 5.8-liter V8 is also able to crank out no less than 631 lb-ft of torque. Polaris RushTear up the powder this winter aboard a Polaris Rush ($TBA). Packing Polaris’ well-received 600 Liberty engine, the Rush boasts a stronger, stiffer chassis that allows for more precise control and less ski lifting, a progressive-rate rear suspension to prevent bottoming out on big bumps (or jumps), and true rider-active control, letting the you move your body weight forward to help with cornering or slide back on the seat for

more grip when accel-erating. It might have a more steep learning curve than your aver-age snowmobile, but once you get the hang of it, it’ll be well worth it.

SylvanSport Go Camper TrailerThe Swiss Army Knife of trailers? A godsend for adventurous small car owners? A bright green blemish on the vast wasteland of asphalt we call an Interstate system? You decide. The SylvanSport Go Camper Trailer ($8,000) is unique in its versatility, as it weighs only 840 lbs., yet can pack up to a dozen bikes, kayaks, two dirt bikes, an ATV, or whatever form of transportation you require, while still func-tioning as a camper, with insulated bed platforms, a self-in-flating mattress, and a secure entry — everything you need to hold your own private X Games in the woods.

for the discerning customer, as well as a moto-hybrid drive train, a 49cc four-strike engine that can go up to 180 miles on a single gallon, a GGB gearbox with a centrifugal clutch and freewheel that lets the pedals stay stationary while the engine’s running things, a 70mm drum front brake, coaster rear brake, and any combination of paint, seat, handlebars, wheels, and other options you’d like.

Skully Heads Up Display HelmetImagine a motorcycle helmet that not only protects your head, but keeps you safe by providing real-time information and video with a simple voice command. The makers of the Skully Heads Up Display Helmet ($TBA) plan on bringing riders exactly that. While still equipped with all the standard safety features the Department of Transportation requires,

the helmet also includes a host of Android-powered technology — technology like a rear-facing 180-degree camera, GPS navi-gation, Bluetooth connectivity, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a compass, and a rechargeable battery. All of this gets projected non-obtrusively on the visor of the helmet, and can be controlled completely hands-free thanks to voice recognition software.

Jeeps may make great off-road vehicles, but for towing things? Not so great. So instead of trying to pull an Air-stream behind your Wrangler, why not combine the two and drive the Jeep Action Camper (€40,000; roughly $54,000)? Designed for two-person expeditions and built on the Wrangler Unlimited, the Action Camper offers a pop-up roof, a fiberglass body, a king-size bed, plenty of storage, a mini-kitchen with three-burner stove and refrigerator, a toi-let with optional kitchen sink shower, and a fold-up dining area. Basically everything you need, packed in to one rug-ged, relatively small package.

Green MachineA gas-powered, adult-sized big wheel? Count us in. The Green Machine ($75,000) is categorized as a three-wheeled motorcycle, but its looks — inspired by the classic pedaled tricycle of the same name — scream out “toy”, even as its

Harley-Davidson v-twin Evo en-gine pushes you along at speeds of up to 50 mph. Other features include a six-speed transmission, a range of 400 miles, and the abil-ity to attract ridiculous amounts of attention.

Der Ziesel Offroad Driving MachineThe Der Ziesel Offroad Driving Machine ($30,000) — the unlikely and bizarre offspring of an M1 Abrams battle tank and a Hoveround mobility scoot-er — is one serious vehicle, ready to handle snow, sand, mud, and grass. It’s essentially a tube steel frame and a rac-ing seat bolted onto two off-road tracks powered by two PMS electric disk motors producing 21 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque. The battery pack will last up to five hours, though driving at the top speed of 22 mph will re-duce that dramatically. All of this is controlled by a simple one-handed joystick, and is fitted with wood armrests, met-al mudguards, and a range of good-looking paint schemes.

Derringer Bespoke MotorbikesYour suits are custom tailored, so why isn’t your bike? Derrin-ger Bespoke Motorbikes ($TBA) offer serious customization

2013 version, Hyundai refined the dashboard, center stack and steering wheel with sharper detailing. The seven-inch TFT gauge-cluster display is big and bold. The infotainment system with premium navigation system is displayed on a bright 9.2 inch screen, and navigated by an intuitive clicky console knob. It’s highlighted by a thumping 598-watt, 17-speaker, Lexicon 7.1 Discrete surround sound audio sys-tem. A tri-zone (front-left, front-right, and rear) climate con-trol system keeps every passenger comfortable. Another shot of class comes courtesy of the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-booted shift lever.

The heated and ventilated front seats have 12-way adjustability and the posh accommodations extend to the cavernous back seats, with audio and climate controls located in a fold-down center armrest. The Ultimate ver-sion adds DVD system and twin 9.3-inch monitors that are nestled nicely into the seatbacks.

Overall, the refreshed 2014 Hyun-dai Equus radiates luxury from

every angle, adding some technological enhancements and performance upgrades that boost an already lavish pack-age. In a crowded field of luxury sedans, the Equus holds its own against some of the finest.

Touch of ClassHyundai is making a powerful statement with the well-appointed Equus luxury sedan

By Charles Hudson

The Hyundai Equus was one of the first luxury vehicles we reviewed in 2013, and with a few mild exterior and interior touch-ups, as well as even more standard tech and safe-ty features, we love it even more in 2014. With the Equus, you’re getting incredible bang for the buck in the premium performance category, inching ever closer to the BMW 7-series, Lexus LS, Audi A8 and Mer-cedes-Benz S-class.

Hyundai makes shopping for the Equus a snap: there are two trim levels: Signature and Ultimate. We test drove the Signature, which is impressively well-equipped: owners will enjoy 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with staggered-width performance tires, opulent leather seating, wood trim interior, lane depar-ture warning system, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, pre-collision warning system, nine air bags, smart cruise control with automatic brak-ing, multi-view camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the entire vehicle, and many other bells and whistles.

Under the hood:Equus’ dual-overhead-cam 5-liter V8 engine is a 429-horsepower beast, pro-viding plenty of muscle and get-up-and-go for merging and passing maneuvers. The V-8 engine is cutting edge: Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), dual continuously variable valve timing, and tuned variable induction. Its eight-speed automatic transmission and rear wheel drive delivered lively accel-eration, sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds. Fuel econ-omy numbers are somewhat disappointing — an estimated 15 city and 23 highway — about the only negative we can say about this vehicle. The Equus offers three air suspension modes — Normal, Sport and Snow — though this car is at its best as a highway cruiser.

On the inside:The Equus’ cabin is where the vehicle really stands out. With plush leather, French stitching and other high-quality touch-es, the interior of the Equus is something special. From the

COMING NEXT MONTHOne on One with Recording Artist

Trisha LurieHailing from Santa Monica, CA, Trisha Lurie is many things. Artist, activist, musician… she follows no one, and forges her own path. She is outspoken, passionate, and unabash-

edly herself and there’s one thing above all Trisha loves to do- make great rock music.

Trisha has just finished recording her debut album, “Ro-mancing Neptune”. Engineered and mixed by the legend-ary Bob Clearmountain (The Rolling Stones, Bruce Spring-steen, The Pretenders, David Bowie), and produced by Peter Thorn (Chris Cornell, Courtney Love). “Romancing Neptune” is from start to finish a dynamic, electrifying rock powerhouse. Thanks to Clearmountain’s contribu-tions, the sonics are undeniably incredible. The tracks on “Romancing Neptune” range from the haunting and intro-spective “Beast”, to the raging “Rampage”, to the full-bore scathing reprimand “Deadbeat”, to the anthemic ode to living life in overdrive, “Smell, Touch, Taste”. “Chinese Love Trap” seethes with lust, “Eulogy” soars, and “Rich Boy” just burns… “Romancing Neptune” is at once stylistically mod-ern, but with a healthy dash of kick ass old school Rock And Roll energy!

TEST RIDE: The Schlick SharkThe Ride: Smooth and effortless! Comfortable! Hours of recumbence without a care in the word!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The Story: John Schlick is an inventor-type that needed to bring one of his product ideas to market and this was at the top of the list. After multiple design patents and partnering with Greg, it is a fantastic reality. There are other cool bicycles out there, but none that perform as well as this one.

No-single speed here – try

• Bicycles for every day – commute, go to the store, ride with friends and family

• Every bike designed and built the way we would want it for ourselves, but yes, we will sell them

• Tom Teesdale, a legend in bicycle frame building history, is our sole

Benefits of the design:• Shimano 8-speed internal hub – about

the range of an old 10 speed• Chrome molly tubing throughout –

strong yet flexes enough to give a great ride

• Geometry that provides great handling and safety – any size rider can touch the ground

• Comfort – no pressure on your hands, wrists, neck and shoulders

• The most unique (and still ride-able!)

AS AN EXERCISE AND POST-RE-HAB SPECIALIST, I am always asked: “What can I do to get into great shape quickly for pool season?” Like anything and everything, it takes time, hard work and dedication. The human body is made up of opposing forces (for every push there is a pull); therefore, I recommend you train on a regular basis. I picked five things that an average Joe can do to get ready for summer.

1. Pushups strengthens and tones chest, shoulders and triceps

2. Pull-ups strengthens and tones back and biceps

3. Abdominal pikes strengthens and firms the abdominals

4. Low back hyperextensions strengthens and tones the low back region

5. Alternating lunges with weights tones and strengthens the entire lower body

In addition to doing these five simple exercises, drink plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces). I also recommend doing at least 20 min-utes of cardio, keeping your heart rate in the fat-burning zone: 220 mi-nus (age x 0.70). And as always, eat plenty of veggies and lean meats, keeping your calories within your ideal metabolic range (your weight x 12).
