Ever Wonder . . .

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?

Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

Spotligh“T ”Note: This is the 54th in a series of cover articles on the members of the MNMGTR and the cars which they love and drive.

We focus on how they got their interest in MGs origina!y and how they came to own the car(s) they now drive. WK

Little BrownieThe story of Little Brownie actually begins in Evansville, Indiana in the early sixties when my Uncle Joe bought a white MGA. My interest in the British mode of personal 4-wheeled transportation took another step in 1969 (Marion, Ohio) when my parents, Jenni & David, purchased a 1952 TD “in the basket.” Dad was going to race the car but that is another story.

Dad would take me to the local British car repair shop where the TD spent a few years just sitting waiting for the owner (Chad Hero) to lay on his reportedly talented hands (oh, the unfamiliar foreign automobiles and the unique smell which penetrated every square centimeter of that old building). To this day, every time I step into Fig’s shop, Galberth’s garage mahal or Quality Coaches, I flash back to Chad Hero’s garage.

In the seventies, Dad drove an Austin Marina. My brother Vinnie and I spent a lot of time in that car. Maybe not the best car for Minnesota winters, but at least it was British!

Fast forward to Minnesota circa 2000, there was a national gathering of all MG types at the St. Paul Fairgrounds which we attended with my parents. Well, that did it for Jenée who fell in love with the MGBs.

A year or two later my Dad told us Mark Brandow had a 1980 russet brown B for sale. Mark drove the car to the Ellingson show so Dad and I could do a test drive. It was a very solid car just needing a bit of work from years of inattention. A price was agreed on and that was that.

I have spent many hours with Little Brownie making her/him better and better. We took the car to the Lake of the Ozarks GOF a few years back and it never whimpered once, all the while giving us an honest 30 miles per gallon.

That 30 m.p.g. will soon be a thing of the past because I am currently replacing the anemic Zenith Stromberg system with dual HS-4 carbs and matching manifolds. Since driving a 1965 three summers back I knew Little Brownie deserved more.

Jenée has often said Little Brownie was the best investment we ever made. Sure, the car is fun to drive and even tinker with, but mostly because of the great people we get to hang with in the MNMGTR. Thanks for all your support!

IN THE DRIVER’S SEATPERSPECTIVE

Summer has landed! Did anyone count how many crawfish I ate at Betsy and Mikes? I now have running S.U.s on Little Brownie. On the first try they fired the engine immediately and there is no limit to how low they can idle. What an improvement. My Dad was there for the final touches and the key turning. We drove it around Richfield without a muffler just for kicks. NASCAR, watch out.

This year we will be electing new officers for the club. Hopefully our esteemed editor will continue at his post with our heartfelt appreciation for his excellent work. It is the most time consuming position on the board.

So, it is time to think seriously about volunteering for a two-year stint as a club officer. We all need to take a turn. It is not what someone else should do, it is something you should do. It’s not hard, it’s fun. In the past, some members have done multiple or extended terms. Think and act. This is a great club to run and everyone appreciates the work of the officers.

Grease it. Oil it. Drive the heck out of it!  Mark Honnigford

Same Horse, Different Year

I will begin this month’s column by riding the same horse that I have ridden every year for the last several years in this column. I’m sorry, but I think this is very important. British Car Week begins on Saturday May 29th. This is a week that is dedicated to increasing the awareness of British cars. We as a club need to get our cars out and drive them during this special week. It’s a sharing thing really. You get to have some fun while spreading joy to all of the people who point and smile and often give you the thumbs up as you drive by. If your MG is road worthy take it out a couple of times during this special wee. You will be glad you did.

Several events have been planned for you to attend with your car. On Sunday May 30th the Minnesota Street Car Museum is holding a car show on the west side of Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. We would like to have half a dozen or more cars from the club attend. See the ad in this issue or the web site for more details. Another event that has been specifically planned for BCW is the Minneapolis to Mexico Tour on Wednesday June 2nd. This will be a simple cruise around the lakes in Minneapolis ending with dinner at a local (and very authentic) Mexican restaurant. Again check the ad in this issue or see the web site for details. This is a call ahead event so you must call or e-mail me and let me know you plan to attend. On Saturday, June 5th, we have the Tech Session in Owatonna at Dave VonWald and Pat Poulson’s place. This is always a fun and well attended event.

If you live outside the Twin Cities and have fellow members or other British car owners nearby, plan an event that you and the gang can attend.

And last but not least, the one place I am going to ask you to drive to is the Scoreboard on Sunday June 6th. Yes, you read that right, we will be back at the Scoreboard for this year’s BCW Natters. We have

organized a salute to MG on that day just as we have done for the last five years. So even if your car does not run, or you are not comfortable driving your classic MG that far, please mark your calendar and make plans to attend this special “natters.” If you are a club member who lives in the Twin Cities metro and does not usually attend club functions, this will be a good opportunity to come and meet other members. It will be worth the time you set aside for this event. Oh, and please pray for good weather! Thanks.

Always check the web site for the latest information on these and other Club events and news.

FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT FROM THE GARAGE

This is a very full issue, so I am going to devote my column to something I received from Paul Plummer of the MG car club in the UK.

For more information go to: [email protected] and view the poster. I’ll print it next month if there is space available.

Wayne Kivell, Editor

There’s not a whole lot new this month on the old car front. Most of the cars are up and running and going strong. Hear that Mark H.?

I was at Bob Figenskau's this week and Gary Krukoski has been at work on Bob's A and man, is it beautiful. Almost too nice to drive, but a driver it will be. Bob is working on a really nice TD and it is coming along.

Word has it that the Tuesday group will be going to George Christopherson's house to get the cars running. That will be good. George and Jim Trudgeon are both sorely missed.

Thea Trudgeon will be getting the TF up and running soon we hope. I can’t wait to see it on the road.

The Valve Cover racing was a blast, as usual. Many thanks to Tim and Nancy Crain for their hospitality. Congrats to Betsy Masiee once again for winning the race.

‘Til next month, Safety Fast,

Tom Maine

Dear Magazine Editor,

Firstly I would like to introduce myself, my name is Paul Plummer and I have recently been appointed as Overseas Director for the MG Car Club here in the UK.

My objective is to build strong, active and lasting relationships with the overseas affiliated clubs, and one of the ways I see to develop that aim, is to have an interchange of articles and editorials in our respective magazines.

We gratefully receive copies of your magazine/newsletter and I hope that you get to see Safety Fast! on a regular basis.

Bearing this in mind, we would ask you to review the attached document with a view to inserting it in your next edition. The objective of this piece is to say “Hello!”, let you know that we are thinking of you and tell you a little of what is going on in our world.

I would also point out that we run a regular monthly Overseas Feature in Safety Fast!, which comprises of;

a) the Overseas Review, an amalgam of interesting news snippets from the various clubs and centres around the world, and

b) an article submitted from an overseas club, describing an event.

A good example of both of these can be found in March 2010 Safety Fast!

We hope that you find this proposal attractive, and look forward to receiving articles from your club for insertion into Safety Fast!.

If you have any questions please contact Chris Seaward at the MG Car Club’s headquarters in Abingdon – [email protected] 01235 849731

Best regards,

Paul PlummerOverseas Director, MG Car Club

Part II

Repair ProblemsReplacement seals for these water pumps are no longer available. The rear of the housing must be machined and bushed for a seal that fits. Some suggested English seals and the various dimensions involved are found in the December 2007 issue of OCCB on pages 37-41. It also points out that even a new seal may leak if the face of the impeller has been scored, pitted or run-out. If the chamfered edge of the seal housing is chipped or pitted water may leak around the outside of the seal. On original pumps, the impeller was attached to the shaft by a taper pin. I have examined four replacement shafts and seven replacement impellers and none of them had a hole for a taper pin. Since the shaft is a press fit in the impeller with .0002- to .0003" of interference, the taper pin was unnecessary in the first place since there is virtually no resistance to the impeller's motion. Two of the shafts, which were from MG parts suppliers, did not even have a shoulder on the shaft. Instead, there was a removable ring the size of the shoulder with its rearward movement limited by a circlip. Once sealed bearings are used and the felt and washers have been eliminated, the shoulder serves no useful purpose and is not included on the tapered shafts referred to above. The impellers were of three types: cast iron, brass, and a hard black plastic material which had a bronze contact ring. Failures of the last one have been reported. Apparently the heat of the engine and coolant caused separation of the bronze contact ring from the plastic impeller. All had six vanes except the cast iron which had four. Since the shaft is a tight fit in the impeller and the bearings, the shaft can be pressed through the bearings from the front until the large end of the taper is about .003" from the front bearing. The impeller can then be pressed onto the back of the shaft until its vanes are .005" to .010" from the pump body. One has to make sure to have a seal that will be making contact with the impeller.

The fan blades are attached to the pulley by four long, thin bolts that go through a distance piece. The front of the distance piece is solid so that the nut on the front of the shaft can only be accessed after removal of the distance piece. In my experience and that of others who have reported (OCCB, 8/07), the distance piece is super tight and very difficult to remove while the pump is still on the car. To alleviate this, since I was tightening my fan blades so often, I had notches cut around the back

of the distance piece so that it could be pried off with a screwdriver. Getting access to the four fasteners that attach the pump to the block is extremely difficult if the pulley is not first removed. Modifying a 13 mm wrench for the lower left nut has been suggested (OCCB 8107). I highly recommend at least two people--preferably with small hands and long fingers--for removal of the water pump without having first removed the radiator. It is easier on a TC or TD than on a TF.

Since the pulley is keyed to the shaft, it is difficult to install properly if the pump is on the car. The usual procedure is to slightly recess the front of the key (which is curved on the bottom) so that it won't foul the matching groove in the pulley. Then position the pulley on the shaft at a point where you believe (possibly through marking) that the key and the pulley will line up since you can't see the key at this point. Then, if the pulley does not just slide over the key, one usually slightly rotates the pulley until it "catches"on the key and can be pushed back. The trouble with this is that if you can rotate the pulley and move it back and forth with your hand, it's too loose and will start to wobble after extensive use. If you don't drive the car much, it probably will never show up. If you install the pulley on the shaft before installing the pump, the four nuts and bolts will be extremely difficult to access. The engine steady bracket (held by the bottom stud and bottom bolt) must be put in place before the pump is moved fully back against the block. Another problem can occur if the woodruffe key, instead of leveling itself, kicks up so that the pulley appears to be tight, but isn't. At this point, you can't see the inner race of the front bearing or the front retaining cover where the pulley makes contact. This can stress the pulley and cause it to crack along the line of the keyway resulting in part of it breaking away (OCCB4/09).

If the radiator and water pump have been removed, I recommend installing helicoils in all of the stud and bolt holes. The threads tend to become worn and rounded over time. An 8 x 1 mm helicoil installation kit is one of my better tools. It is also useful on the aluminum sump holes which are often stripped. When installing the pump, with the radiator in place, care is required in placing and sealing the gasket between the pump and the block. It is easy to damage or move the gasket causing a leak.

Pool Party & car display

Date: Saturday, June 26Time: 2:00 p.m.Place: Figenskau’s( 4551 Tonkawood Rd, MinnetonkaCoordinators: Bob & Sheila Figenskau

We are going to do something different this year. The party will still be on a Saturday, but one week earlier. Travel to the GOF Central in Ohio will take me away on the usual date, so Sheila will have to celebrate her birthday alone this year. I'm sure she will have a happier time with the pool to herself with friends or the grandkids.

Anyway, the annual Pool Party and Car Display will be held this year on Saturday, June 26. We will host our MGT Register club and a few friends for an afternoon of casual conversations, swimming, car gazing, bench racing, lying, and otherwise enjoying the company of good friends and companions. Bring your favorite car and companion, find a scenic route and plan to arrive around 2:00 p.m. Park your car on the lawn to show if it is special to you, or on the street if an ordinary street driver.

Bring some ice cubes, your main course for grilling and something for pot luck. Join in the festivities and enjoy the cars, the pool and the people. Call Sheila for guidance on the pot luck contribution. We will light the Weber's at about 4:30 and start cooking. Refeshments will be provided.

Please plan to include us on this weekend and RSVP. Call Sheila or Bob at 952-935-7909 so that they will know how much beer and pop to order. The address above is about a mile west of I 494 and a block north off Hwy 7.

See you there!

Yes, it’s GOF Central, Ohio style, on wonderful Lake Erie. A few highlights include a Lake Erie

sunset dinner cruise and an enjoyable drive around historic Marblehead Peninsula on our scenic rally/tour. And as a real bonus, those colorful 1930’s MG’s will be visiting in abundance with their Fabulous Triple-M Bibulous Gallimaufry Shenanigans. All this is right on Ohio’s north coast playground within easy reach of major highways.

Just down the road from Cedar Point (yet with super room rates for us), Sawmill Creek

Trip to the XXXII Gathering Of The Faithful

by Bob Figenskau

It's a longer trip this year, but it will be a scenic drive to Sandusky, Ohio and the annual Central Gathering of the MG Faithful being held at the Sawmill Creek Resort Lodge on beautiful Lake Erie. It will be easy driving and scenic roads for the most part, but a drive through Chicago makes it a little tougher. My plan is to start on Wednesday, June 30. at 7:00 a.m. from the Perkins in Hastings. We will take the scenic route on Hwy 61 to LaCrosse, then I-90/94 or a more scenic route to the west side of Chicago for the night. Then early on Thursday morning we will travel through Chicago on I-90 to IL 53 south which merges with I-290 and connects to I-355 to I-80 east. Then we connect to US 6 across Indiana and Ohio. We can easily be at the Sawmill Creek Resort in time for the cocktail hour.

If you haven't registered or made your reservation at the Sawmill Creek Resort, DO IT NOW. See page 15 of the Tattler or check the web. It’s an early departure and we don't want to leave without you.

Your marching orders are as follows: register for the GOF, make reservations at the Sawmill Creek Resort, and call me at 952-935-7909 so I know you are coming.

Water Pump, cont. &om p. 6I have heard of fan blades breaking and causing substantial damage. Once a fan blade had broken off and hit the engine steady bracket with such force that it put a substantial gouge in it. The broken fan blade was lying on the suspension cross member. I have switched to the 7-blade MGB plastic fan which fits perfectly. It even seemed to fit more perfectly when installed backwards! (The fan blade distance piece should go in front of the fan blade assembly.) Since switching to the type of improved water pump described in the February 2009 issue of TSO, although I did it ten years ago, I have had no further problems with leaks or wobbly pulleys. People who don't drive much probably won't have trouble with the original equipment.

ConclusionThe adequacy of the original design to fulfill its purpose when these cars were new is now irrelevant. The cars

and their water pumps are now 55 to 60 years old. I doubt that any of them are completely original. Time alone will cause the seal to perish. Mileage will cause the hole in the pulley to enlarge. The only relevancy of understanding the design is to use this knowledge in determining the best way to repair a leaky water pump when it does fail. No one wants to remove the radiator and its attachments to replace a leaky water pump or a wobbly pulley. A wobbly pulley can be removed and replaced in situ with another pulley that is not too tight a fit on the shaft or one with a tapered fit. A tapered fit, however, necessitates prior removal and modification of the water pump shaft. Once a tapered shaft pulley has been substituted, it can be removed and replaced with relative ease as can the water pump. This can usually be done without removal of the radiator.

On the Lighter SideMy husband and I divorced over religious differences. He thought he was God, and I didn't.For Sale: Wedding dress, size 8. Worn once, by mistake.

There are two times when a man doesn't understand a woman....before marriage and after. An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 40 years. The Wizard says, "Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you." The old man says without hesitation, "I now pronounce you man and wife."I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the checkout line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and asked sweetly, "So which six items would you like to buy?"Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, my elderly neighbor and his wife were told there would be a 45-minute wait for a table. "Young man, we're both 82 years old," the husband said. "We may not have 45 minutes." They were seated immediately. All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle. They reached the altar and the waiting groom. The bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. The guests in the front pews responded with ripples of laughter. Even the priest smiled broadly. As her father gave her away in marriage, the bride gave him back his credit card.Women and cats will do as they please........men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
