Brief History of Tattoo Pigments

• 1980’s saw development of synthetic tattoo pigments with brighter and more varied colors.

• All pigments - mostly derived from consumer product pigments and dyes, which may include a blend of chemicals used for making paint and ink.

• What’s in the ink:– Additives to increase ‘wettability’

– Bonding agents to help the pigment stick to the needles

– Ethanol and isopropanol for sterility– Pigment color– Whatever the artist decides to add based on tradition – Listerine, Vodka

Page 5: Tatt2 away general ppt

What is in the Pigment?

• Significantly 39% of the 28 most commonly used pigments in tattoo ink are NOT allowed in cosmetics

• 17% of 52 pigments used in tattooing contain a carcinogenic amine, which may include– Mercury Salts – Cinnabar (Red)

– Cadmium Sulphide (Yellow)

– Manganese (Purple)

– Trivalent Chromic Oxide (Green)– Cobalt (Blue)

• The distribution chain for raw pigments is complex and difficult to regulate

Tattoo Pigment in the Skin

Why is this important?

Because the person removing pigment with a laser has no idea what is in the pigment being removed (absorbed)!!!

Approximately 2mm depth

Tattoo Removal MethodsThe Problem!

Currently, there is no guaranteed method of removing all tattoo pigment without leaving some sort of mark or evidence that something has been there before.

Skin Mark / Scar vs. Pigment Remaining

• Excision

• Resurfacing

• Laser

• Escharotics

Removal by Laser

Pros• Perceived as state of the art• Can eliminate some pure

tattoo colors without much mark. Typically, only darker colors– Dark Blue– Black– Some Reds

Cons• Slow & painful• Risk of breakdown of

pigment products• Variable elimination• Expensive • Scar potential• Allergic reaction• Darkening of pigment• Skin pigment changes

Most Common Options:CO2, Pulsed Nd:YAG, Q-Switched Ruby, and IPL

• Requires qualified technician

Tatt2Away

Mechanisms of Action:– Like reverse tattooing– Removes epithelium– Natural product (TEPRSOL) introduced into dermis– Eschar formation and variable thickness skin injury created

Discussion:– Small area treatments– Effectively removes ALL pigment colors– Potentially quicker than laser due to reduced number of visits

needed– Can be used as adjunct to laser
