An injured tiger was found trapped between rocks in Sirna river in Chandrapur district andefforts to rescue it were on, a forest official said on Wednesday. The big cat is suspected tohave injured its spinal cord after jumping 35 feet off bridge on the Sirna River near Kunadavillage in Bhadravati tehsil here, he added. The tiger had killed a wild animal and rested fora while on the bridge in Chandrapur before jumping down into the river in the early hoursof Wednesday, he said. Bhadravati Range Forest Officer Swati Maheshkar was alerted and arescue operation was launched, the official said. “We tried to rescue the animal, but itfailed to enter the cage we placed close by. The rescue has been stopped due to poor lightand will continue on Thursday morning,” a senior forest officer said. —ANI/PTI

MUMBAI: The ED on Wednesdayopposed a bail plea of HumayunMerchant, arrested in a money-laundering case involving gangsterIqbal Mirchi, saying the matter has“international ramifications”. In itswritten reply filed before specialjudge P Rajvaidya, the ED said theaccused played a “very crucialrole” in laundering of huge amou -nts of crime proceeds. Merchantmay hamper the probe if releasedon bail, it said, adding he wasaware of the “line of probe” andmight tip off other suspects whoare at large. The case was sensi -tive, involving money generatedfrom organised crime, and itssuspected use for terror financingand narcotic trade was underinvestigation, the agency said.

NAGPUR: A special court onWednesday remanded a for-mer Congress MLA in policecustody until November 13 inthe Rs38.75-crore alleged loandisbursal fraud in a co-opera-tive bank. The ex-legislator,Ashok Dhawad, also chair-man of the Navodaya UrbanCo-operative Bank, had sur-rendered himself before po-lice on Monday, followingwhich he was arrested by theEconomic Offences Wing.The Maharashtra Protec-tion of Interest of Depositors(MPID) Act court judge SunilPatil remanded Dhawad inpolice custody for a period ofone week on Wednesday.

Inspector Prashant Mane ofEOW said Dhawad would beinterrogated over his allegedinvolvement in the fraud.Former board of directors,office-bearers, and some bor-rowers of the bank werebooked by Dhantoli Police inNagpur in May this year un-der various IPC sections offor cheating and criminalbreach of trust besides un-der the MPID Act and Infor-mation Technology Act.They are accused of sanc-tioning unsecured loans be-tween 2010 & 2017, Mane said,adding, “The accused had al-legedly returned the originaldocuments of the properties

mortgaged with the bankand No Objection Certifi-cates (NOCs) to those whohave failed to repay loan.”The police officer also list-ed preparing fake registra-tion documents among otherirregularities allegedly com-mitted by the accused. TheReserve Bank had cancelledthe licence of the bank on Oc-tober 8 last year under theBanking Regulation Act,1949. Another EOW officialsaid the erstwhile board ofdirectors and some office-bearers allegedly tamperedwith the computer records toshow the loan was disbursedto genuine borrowers.

Recently, the Pant Nagarpolice registered a case of cheating andcriminal breach of trust against JayeshShah and other directors of the RSJ forduping several investors. The probe waslater transferred to the EOW. According to the First Information

Report, Shah allegedly duped peoplethrough investment schemes. Theinvestors were promised gold jewelleryequivalent to their 12 months ofinvestments paid in 12 installments. Avictim said the last installment was to bepaid by the jeweller as an incentive.

In an initiative to de-stressinmates, jail authorities haveplanned to set up naturopa-thy wellness centres in Mum-bai's Arthur Road and Pune'sYerawada Jails on WorldNaturopathy Day observedon November 18. In the pilot project, inmateswill be advised and trained tolive a disease-free life thro -ugh naturopathy. The projectis largely based on the threefundamentals of medicine,yoga and care, said a seniorpolice official. The jail staffcan also get the de-stresstreatment at this centre."The naturopathy wellnesscentre will be established un-der the National Institute ofNaturopathy, which wouldprovide doctors, 2 trainedtherapists and chefs, whilejail authorities would giverest of the infrastructure.The project was initiated kee -p ing the mental and physicalwell-being of inmates inmind. Lifestyle diseases likehigh/low blood pressure,obesity, thyroid among oth-

ers could be kept at baythrough naturopathy," saidDeepak Pandey, inspectorgeneral of police (prisons).Shedding light on how theproject will benefit jailbirds,Pandey said two doctors willmonitor the inmates’ health.Food intake would also beclosely-monitored, and in-stead of prescribing medi-cines, patients would be sug-gested healthy seasonal diets,which would also include in-termittent fasting. "Theprocess of healing is basedon a three-step treatment --fasting, eliminative diet andenigma. Preferencewould be given to patientswith serious ailments andsenior citizens. The treatmentwould be given to patients inbatches of 50 to 100 patientseach. The jail authoritiesclaimed, they will be readywith the centre, equippedwith BP machines, glucome-ters and other instruments.

The Malvani police traced a seniorcitizen late on Tuesday night, whowas reported missing two daysago. Jaisuna Ali Ahmed Khan,fondly known as Jaisun Bi, 65,had gone to the public bathroomin her neighbourhood, early onMonday, after which she forgotthe way back and was lost. JaisunBi's family launched a franticsearch and reported her missingat Malvani police station.

Police said, Jaisun Bi, a Malvaniresident, stays with her son andfamily. With her progressive age,

she suffered from partial demen -tia, said an official. On Mondaymorning, Jaisun Bi had gone tothe washroom, when she forgother way back. Somehow, she end -ed up in MHB colony at Borivli(W) and when locals found her

wandering, they asked her if sheremembered her son’s name oraddress, but to no avail. Theytook her to nearest police station.

When police officials checkedthe missing persons report, theyfound that Jaisun Bi's son, Rahim,38, had registered a complaint atMalvani police station. A teamfrom Malvani police station, ledby police sub-inspector HasanMulani reached Borivli andbrought Jaisun Bi to Malvani onWednesday morning. Accordingly,her family was called to the policestation and she was reunited withthem on Wednesday morning.

outlets in Thane, Palghar,Mumbai and other parts of thestate a couple of days beforeDiwali, leaving hundreds ofpeople, who had invested intheir gold and fixed depositschemes, in the lurch.An official at Koregaon Park

police station here saidaccording to the depositors,they were promised goodreturns on their investment inthe jewellery group’s schemes.

He said the depositorsalleged they made investmentscollectively worth Rs3.1 crorein the schemes since last year,but did not get returns aspromised.Based on the complaints, the

case was registered onTuesday under the Indian PenalCode Sections 420 (cheating),406 (criminal breach of trust),34 (common intention) and theMaharashtra Protection ofInterests of Depositors inFinancial Establishments(MPID) Act, the official said.The Thane police’s Economic

The Mumbai crime branchon Tuesday night arrested anastrologer for an extortionbid and threatening a 21-year-old woman, said police. The accused has been iden-tified as Dr Mahavir SinghRathod, a resident ofCharkop in Kandivali. Ac-cording to the complaint,Rathod gave the victim agemstone-studded ring.When she failed to pay, hestarted to threatening her. Crime branch officials saidthe victim, a credit cardagent, working for a bank,came in contact of Rathod acouple of years ago. WhenRathod met her in July, heasked her her date of birth to

predict her future by readingher face. Rathod told her shewas good at networking, shewas talented and wanted tostart a new relation-ship, which had beennot happening. Ac-cording to the vic-tim, since somefacts matched herstatus, she be-lieved him. Hetold her that herstars were notfavouring her, andadvised her to wear agemstone. He suggest-ed a ritual and asked herto wear a ring studded with agemstone, and demandedRs50,000.After performing some rit-uals, Rathod allegedly gaveher the ring and demanded

the money. After a few days,the victim gave him aRs50,000-cheque, which wassigned by her mother. The

cheque was dishon-oured. The victimsaid Rathod thenstarted to threatenher with dire con-sequences that ifshe did not payhim Rs1,28,000 asa penalty, he wouldget her entire fami-ly arrested.When he continued

to harass her even andall her pleas fell on deaf

ears, the victim finally ap-proached Charkop police andlodged a case against himand his female colleague un-der the Indian Penal Code(IPC) sections 385 (extortion),

406 (criminal breach oftrust), 506 (criminal intimi-dation) and 509 (by word, ges-ture or act intended to out-rage the modesty of awoman). After the case wasregistered, Rathod ap-proached the court to get an-ticipatory bail, which it re-jected.The crime branch unit 11,who took over the investiga-tion, showed the gemstone-studded ring to their valuer,who pegged its value to bearound Rs7,000. On Tuesday,the crime branch team re-ceived information aboutRathod, after which he wasarrested from his house inCharkop. On Wednesday, hewas produced in a court,which remanded him in po-lice custody till Monday.

next day (January 1, 2018).The conclave had thebacking of Maoists, the po-lice claimed, while arrest-ing several Left-leaning ac-tivists and writers in thecase in June and August of2018.Meanwhile, activist Gau-tam Navlakha, another ac-cused in the case who hasnot been arrested, has alsomoved the sessions courtseeking anticipatory bail.The court will hear his pleaon November 7.
