FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 10, 2019

I was recently reading an article that, just as priests are in short supply who minister at the altar, so too, those who make music at Mass, particularly our organists. For organists are disappearing, too, at a rapidly, rising rate in our churches. The American Guild of Organists recently reported that their membership has decreased from 18,357 in 2007, to 14,880, just ten years later. The Church has described the organ as the “Prince of instruments”, but more and more this “prince” is becoming a “pauper”, as there are fewer organists that are able to play this complex instrument, much less congregants who do not want the instrument played, preferring another instrument. For those of us music lovers out there, this is profoundly sad.

While sports is everything for many young people and their parents today, music for many is taking a back seat. I have been on both ends of the spectrum. I have played and even coached a sport in college, and I have also taken years of music lessons, and for a period of time gave some private piano lessons. I remember a fiercely practical religious sister saying years ago that the advantage of songs over sports is that there are very few life-long injuries in music, and playing an instrument is something that you can do well into your old age.

For years I would sit down at the piano and play and practice before I went to bed. Now, such as last evening, after my work day was done, I sat with the guitar and worked on a song from James Taylor. A song that once-upon-a-time I felt was way too hard, and now breezed through it rather easily. That is a wonderful musical feeling.

But for any musicians out there, we have all had those practice sessions, working on a piece of music or those ever painful exercises, scales, arpeggios, you name it, that we simply could not master. We would try the technique or the line over and over again and we simply could not master it. Recall what the definition of “insanity” is. Insanity is defined by some as, “doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different outcome”. I guess to be a musician also

means to be a bit insane, for so often we are doing things over and over again but expecting at some point a different outcome.

It is true that in today’s Gospel from St. Luke, on this 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time, there is no mention of “fine music” but instead about “men fishing”. St. Peter, as impulsive as he was, no doubt must have been muttering under his breath that it was insanity that they had kept casting their same nets over and over again, expecting a different outcome besides catching nothing. But as the Sacred Scriptures record, they caught “0”!

Then, their leader and Lord Jesus comes on the scene, whose background is carpentry, not fishing, and tells them that they should go out into the deep water with their nets and boats for a big catch. I suspect that if Peter had been muttering under his breath, (which he certainly might have been doing), he might have been saying something to his shipmates like; “What does that former carpenter know about catching fish when we did not catch anything all night?”

But the Good News is that St. Peter, in faith of catching some fish, is willing to throw the nets one more time into the sea, to see if something might be caught. But there is no doubt that St. Peter and his veteran fishermen fully knew, that you really catch fish best at night, not during the day when the sun was high up in the sky. The suggestion of the Savior sounded “INSANE TO THOSE MEN”, but it turned out “INCREDIBLY MIRACULOUS” as both boats were filled with a catch that almost caused them to sink. Was this just a matter of GOOD LUCK? Yes, to the non-believer. But to the believer, it was the work of the GOOD LORD!

The philosophy of life that we live can be reduced down to a couple of words. You have no doubt heard many of these expressions. Lines such as “Sink or Swim”, “Quit or Get Going”, “Fight or Flight”; and in keeping with today’s gospel, “FISH or FORGET IT”. I believe that even more miraculous than the multiple fish that were caught, was this man named Peter who kept fishing with faith in the Lord, as opposed to simply saying, “Come on guys. Let’s go home and forget it.”

From the greatest musicians and composers, to the Messiah and that company of followers of Jesus that were largely fishermen, their ability, their awesome miracles were often the result of what the world would see as “insane”, but they had belief in the holy and “Incarnate One”, and was willing to try it ONE MORE TIME!

I suspect that those of you that faithfully read this bulletin each week also faithfully go to Mass each week. In spite of your best religious efforts you might sometimes ask yourself spiritually: “I go to Mass each week (and perhaps even daily my whole life) and maybe I am insane, when I am surrounded by people that do not practice the faith?” Yet these Masses and sacraments that we receive over and over again that many in the culture (who do not believe) think is insanity; please remember this, the whole story of faith has not yet been written. For when Christ makes His last cast at the time of our death, we believe by faith that

Page 2 HolyRosaryNorthMankato.com | LoyolaCatholicSchool.org

After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets. When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.” - St. Luke

Stewardship of Gratitude

Stewardship Of Gratitude Thank you for your faithful giving of stewardship in the midst of all of this winter weather. We are moving ahead nicely on our stewardship commitments on both our hard stewardship goals for both Loyola and the Diocese. Have an open mind to becoming an e-giver! As always, thank you for your gifts!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “Each moment of worry, anxiety, or stress represents a lack of faith in miracles, for they never cease.” -T.F. Hodge

Fuel Fund

This week we took the first steps towards our Fuel Fund goal of $7,000.00 as we received $95.00. It is a beginning! Last year the parish spent $21,500.00 to heat our parish facility. We have paid through the month of December a total of nearly $6,500.00. (I am a bit nervous to see the fuel bill for the month of January!) With our recent cold snap, we were required by the natural gas company to switch out our fuel to fuel oil, as we are in this program in order to have a lower cost for natural gas. So, this past week we spent more than $1,000.00 to fill the underground tanks. This is the first time that we have had to purchase fuel oil in the past five winters. As you know, it all adds up! Attached to last week’s bulletin is an envelope to assist with defraying at least a portion of our annual fuel expenses. The remainder of the fuel costs will come out of the Sunday offerings. You may return these envelopes either through the collection, the mail or the parish office. As always, know how grateful I am as pastor at your great generosity for something so basic as fuel. Thank you for your gifts!

“Taste of the Nations”

Next Weekend! Can you believe that our Second Annual “Taste of the Nations” is almost here! It has the makings of being better than ever. As we go to press, we have sold more tickets than last year and we are down to just 17 remaining tickets to be sold. We had a good run of tickets last weekend as well as selling tickets at the parish office. Those who attended last year know how much fun and how tasty the great variety of food is at this event. There is something for everyone! We have this year 14 vendors and maybe even more by the time we arrive on the BIG DAY! There will be music, specialty drinks and much more! Tickets will be sold after the Masses, at the door and of course stopping by the Parish Center during office hours.

those who have not believed and practiced their faith, that their boats will sink in the dark waters of death. But to those of us that have been faithful, we will be part of the great catch for Christ’s eternal kingdom and everlasting life. Stay faithful to the Holy Eucharist and Christ’s spotless bride the Church! Have a good week!

Stepping Up in Faith

Each week we take another step forward in stewardship and sacrifice for our front steps. We are grateful for receiving this week more than $500.00 for the front entrance. As I stated last week, we are blessed with a very generous benefactor from our parish who has agreed to match dollar for dollar, every gift of stewardship from February 1, 2019 - September 1, 2019. So this week’s gift is not really $550.00, but actually $1,100.00! What a difference! Even though you have given for this project, continue to consider giving as your stewardship will experience with these designated monies a wonderful form of “inflation”. Last week I spoke with the architect for this project. Our architect, whose name is “Margaret”, and who has done some wonderful work throughout our Diocese of New Ulm, told me that she has quite a few projects that she is presently working on, but would most likely begin the blueprint drawings for the contractor starting in March and the work would take two to three weeks to complete. By April 1st, we hope to be offering the plans to area contractors to begin the work during the summer months or early fall. It is wonderful to start seeing this long-talked about project taking root. Thank you for all of your support up to this time! We are doing great!

It is again time for the Knights of Columbus to co-sponsor its annual Benefit for Birthright Ticket Raffle. Tickets are available at the parish office or by calling David Mutch at 387-5406. The cost of a book of 6 tickets is $6.00. There are 5 prizes ranging in value from $50.00-$250.00.

Directory Update! We received word recently that the

new Parish Directories will be shipped to our parish on the week of February 15th. We will begin the distribution before and after the weekend Masses (only) on February 23rd-24th, March 2nd-3rd, Ash Wednesday, March 6th and March 9th-10th. After those weekends they will then be available for the remaining people to pick-up their books at the Parish Office. We are asking that you would come to Mass and not to the office, as they will be available those first weeks before and after Mass in the church only, as to avoid a continuous disruption for the staff. We had a great response to the parish directory with several hundred households having their photos taken or submitted. Thank you for understanding.

This week Holy Rosary paid out $5,000.00 towards our stewardship commitment goal. The parish also paid out almost another $3,000.00 towards our Diocesan stewardship Diocesan commitment. When we compare ourselves to last year’s payouts, we are still behind by $20,172.27. The sooner that we have these commitments completed in this fiscal year, we will then be able to concentrate our stewardship efforts on our front entrance as well as the new roof on our 1925, education building. With God’s grace and your generosity, both of these projects will be completed before the close of this calendar year. A word of thanks also goes out to all of you on behalf of the Bishop and the Diocese of New Ulm, involving our Diocesan Ministries Appeal. To date, 73 households have contributed to this second stewardship Diocesan appeal. Holy Rosary has at this time completed 41% of the soft goal that was established by the Diocese. As always, thank you for your gifts!

5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 10TH, 2019

Worship Committee Meeting Minutes

Holy Rosary Catholic Church

January 21, 2019

The Holy Rosary Worship Committee was called to order on Monday, January 21st, 2019, in Conference room 1. The majority of the members were present and new members Keith and Cherie Freundl, were welcomed. The meeting began with prayer that was led by Father. The past minutes of the November 12th, meeting were reviewed and approved as read, as well as the January agenda under discussion. Pastor’s Report: Father began by thanking the Worship Committee for all of their efforts for the environment for both Advent and the Christmas season. Both the set-up and take down for Christmas went pretty smoothly. The crew before Christmas was large and resulted in no need for decorating two nights. Father has received many compliments over the re-making of the vestibule doors with glass inserts. The four Masses of Christmas went smoothly. Three of the Masses had a slightly lower attendance than last year but the 10:00 P.M. seemed to have a larger attendance. All in all it was a good Christmas celebration and it was noticed that a good number of people had their family pictures taken in the sanctuary after Mass. No one seems to mind that the doors at the entrance were altered with the panes of glass. The change of the doors to glass has resulted in making the vestibule seem larger with more natural light entering the space. As we start the New Year, the big push will be for the new steps and front entrance. Father will be meeting with the Finance Council next Monday and among the numerous issues under discussion, will be proceeding ahead with the front entrance, drawing up the blue prints with the architect, seeking Diocesan approval and hiring a contractor that can complete the work on or before the winter snows begin in late October or early November. Old Business: Front Entrance: Progress continues to be made on the “Stepping Up in Faith” project that is scheduled to begin sometime this year. Since our last meeting on November 12th, the revenue in this designated fund has increased by $12,243.00. Pictorial Directory: The second and final draft is being completed and the new parish directory should be in the hands of the faithful that participated in this project by the middle of February. Advent/Christmas/Ordinary Time Environment: Environment was discussed from past seasons and the present season. The Christmas flowers were discussed. The flowers survived better this year although Father had bought some flowers after Christmas, on sale, to replace those that were dying. Suggestions for next year’s

purchases were made. It was decided to leave some of the decorations up in order to transition more smoothly into the season of Ordinary Time. Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service Review: All who attended felt that the annual event that Holy Rosary hosted this past year went well. A large portion of the people had come downstairs for the social. This event is a good community builder. Lenten Penance Service: Although Lent is a little ways off, Father asked to discuss the day for the Penance Service. Father suggested that he would like to try a Wednesday evening if there is priest availability in order to have some of the upper grades have the opportunity to attend the sacrament as well. The Worship Committee concurred with this idea if the priests can be found as opposed to having the service on a Sunday afternoon. Server Appreciation Party: The annual appreciation party for the altar servers was discussed. Nearly all of the servers were in attendance as the time, at the close of religious education worked out very well. Father gave some brief instructions about serving (in keeping with the religious education time) and then pizza and treats were served. A gift card was given to all of the servers that attended the party. The students seemed to enjoy themselves. New Business: Lenten/Easter Environment: Both Lent and Easter environments were discussed. Both the Lenten and Easter seasons are later this year. Stepping Up in Faith: Father informed the committee that the resources are coming in well as stated in the old business of this meeting. A very generous benefactor has agreed to match every dollar that is being donated beginning February 1st, 2019. So, every dollar that the people give is actually double the amount. “Five-Minutes With the Word”: These booklets are for the people to be used at the two penitential times of the year, Advent and Lent. Lorraine will see that sufficient books will be ordered. The same amount will be ordered as at Advent time. Server Training: New servers and many of the servers who are only performing the cross/book/bells will be trained to be main servers beginning in the month of March. Lorraine will contact the families and potential families and together she and Father will train them. There are presently about 35 altar servers. More are needed for the 5:00 pm Mass and the 8:00 am Mass. Eucharistic Ministers: Eucharistic Ministers were discussed. The staff is indicating that we are in need for more E.M.E.’s. The Worship Committee also discussed suspending Holy Communion from the chalice during the season of flus and colds. This ministry would resume on Holy Thursday. There was full-consensus from the committee for this decision. The next Worship Committee is scheduled for Monday, March 4, 2019. The meeting closed with prayer.

Support Me to Trinidad & Tobago! As I am starting my senior year at Minnesota State University-Mankato pursing a degree in Psychology and being member of the women’s hockey team, I have been blessed with the opportunity to continue to play the sport I love for one last year. In May, one opportunity I have been given is to spend a week in Trinidad and Tobago, doing mission work with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) which is through the Newman Center on campus here in Mankato. On this mission trip, I will be traveling with other student-athletes from Minnesota State University and Nebraska in efforts of sharing our faith with the people of Trinidad, as well as putting on sports camps for the children and making home visits. On our mission we hope to spread the Gospel of the Lord and impact the people of Trinidad. I write to you to join us in our mission in Trinidad and Tobago. You can join me in this mission through prayer and/or financial gift, both are greatly appreciated. I am nearing the end of my fundraising efforts and in need of $400.00 for the costs of the trip and $300.00 for the cost of airfare by April. I would greatly appreciate if you would be willing or able to give $50.00, $100.00, or any other amount. If you would like to join my mission support team you can donate online by using the link http://www.focusonline.org/goto/rebekahkolstad. If you would like to write a check, you can make them payable to FOCUS with Rebekah Kolstad, 76458 in the memo line. If you would like to help cover the cost of airfare the checks can be made directly to Rebekah Kolstad as the cost is not included within the trip expenses. You can send checks to 117 Marabou Drive Mankato, MN 56001. If you would like to donate cash I can plan a time to meet with you. Feel free to donate as soon as you are able. Thank you for your consideration! Sincerely, Rebekah Kolstad

Music on the Hill:

Quartet for the End of Time Date: Sunday, February 10, 2019 Time: 2:00 pm Location: Good Counsel Chapel Composed while he was a

prisoner of war, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time seems to touch the far edges of human experience. Described as ethereal, but never dainty. Sometimes powerful, but never harsh or ugly, Messiaen’s music is set apart from any other. Balancing out the program is Bela Bartok’s Contrasts, a piece commissioned by celebrated jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. Featuring clarinet phenomenon, Gabriel Campos Zamora, internationally renowned pianist Tim Lovelace, Minnesota Orchestra Associate Principal Violin, Susie Park, and cellist Richard Belcher. This program is transcendent and beautiful— a gem among contemporary works.

Flu and Faith At the recent Worship Committee

meeting, it was decided to suspend the reception of Holy Communion from the chalice due to flus and colds. The fuller sign of receiving Holy Communion under both forms will resume on Holy Thursday of Holy Week and then will continue through the Easter season and beyond.
