AUSTRALIAN LONGLINE

Australian Longline, an innovative deep water fishing company based in Hobart, owns two longline vessels; the Antarctic Chieftain and the Antarctic Discovery. Both vessels operate in some of the harshest marine environments on earth between the 50th parallel and the Antarctic coastline, enduring icy conditions and terrible storms which in turn can be underpinned by the notorious, relentless Southern Ocean swell.

The Patagonian Toothfish that finally appears on the plate is testimony to the work ethic of our teams. This fish is one of the world’s great seafood delicacies, sought after for its firm, white flesh. The fisheries that the company operates in are managed in accordance with ecosystem-based measures set by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA). Full-time government observers are on board to monitor its practices, study the fish biology and continually assess fish stocks.

Services and resources available:

• professional parametric CAD modelling

• 3D printer for prototyping/small-scale production

• Zemax optical modelling

• precision metrology

• optic/fibreoptic sensor modelling and prototyping

• UV/ Vis, FTIR, photoacoustic and correlation spectroscopy

• non-contact optical stress/strain instrumentation

• borehole imaging/sampling instrumentation

• ruggedised aerogel insulated instrument housings

• project documentation and operational, service and inventory manual preparation.

The high environmental standards that are delivered by our company and crews, combined with an ecosystem based and precautionary approach to stock assessments have enabled the fisheries that we operate in to become certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Australian Longline has also been a partner in the drive to protect the fishery from illegal, unregulated and unrecorded (IUU) operators by working closely with Government and conservation groups and as an active member of the Coalition of Legal Toothfish Operators (COLTO).

AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY

The Bureau of Meteorology has a statutory responsibility for Australian meteorological activities in Antarctica.

It established a weather observing station at Australia’s Mawson base in 1954 and has compiled the longest continuous weather record on the Antarctic continent.

The Bureau maintains weather offices and year round observation programs at the three Australian Antarctic stations as well as at Macquarie Island station, with the meteorological activities of all the offices coordinated by the Bureau’s Tasmania and Antarctica Regional Office which is located in Hobart.

The Bureau provides a range of specialised Antarctic forecasting services to the Australian Antarctic Program, including providing weather forecasts for all its air, sea and land-based operations. Some of these operations are performed by our meteorologists at Casey and Davis stations during summer.

The Bureau can also provide comprehensive information on Antarctic climate data and weather forecasts and observations for the region.

The range of information includes:

• satellite imagery

• a catalogue of Antarctic climate data

• the latest observations from Australia’s Antarctic stations (updated hourly)

INTEGRATED MARINE OBSERVING SYSTEM (IMOS)IMOS is a unique collaboration of the country’s leading marine research organisations, deploying a network of advanced technologies to collect data about Australia’s coastal and marine environments. Led by the University of Tasmania, it is funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). IMOS is the only NCRIS capability based in Tasmania.

The IMOS office in Hobart coordinates strategic planning which guides all IMOS activities. It maintains relationships with government, industry and other stakeholders and facilitates scientific discussions and activity planning among IMOS partners. The office is co-located with the Australian Ocean Data Network, which aggregates IMOS and other data, making it freely available to the Australian marine and climate science community and its international collaborators via a web portal.

IMOS coordinates a multi-institutional ocean observing capability in the Southern Ocean, utilising the Aurora Australis and RV Investigator. Data are collected through the deployment of instruments including Argo floats, satellite tags on marine mammals and deep water moorings as far as the East Antarctic shelf.

IMOS aims to provide Australia with a continuously growing time series of essential ocean variables. In line with the National Innovation and Science Agenda, this will enable cutting-edge research on contemporary problems, and provide a scientific basis for informed decisions about Australia’s vast and valuable marine estate.

MOONRAKER

Antarctica is a challenging environment and one day an expeditioner may be faced with the ultimate challenge. This is something Moonraker appreciates and factors into its systems, because a Moonraker antenna may be called on to save your life.

Moonraker has a long history of production for cold climate environments and its commitment to excellence has resulted in antennas that can survive 250 km/h cyclonic winds in temperatures as low as -30°C at the Poles. They can also handle 50°C with 100 per cent humidity in the tropics.

Antennas are available from LF to UHF for land installations – including close-in NVIS systems for local area networks – and for all types of vessels from trailed craft to ocean-going ships. Special types are designed for emergencies, high power transmission, and GMDSS. New systems can be designed or adapted to suit customer requirements.

And because safety at sea depends on so much more, Moonraker also has designed a range of high-performance accessories, from radio earth plates and insulators to marine lightning protection including lightning rods, horn gap arrestors, coaxial surge suppressors and protection for DC and AC equipment and electronic devices.

All systems are engineered to give you the best performance – year after year.
