Presidents Annual Report 2011
2011 has been a year of great change for Gymnastics Tasmania with the Board
making the decision to move the administration of Gymnastics Tasmania to be
administered from Gymnastics Australia.
I would like to personally thank Geoff Reitchell and the staff from Gymnastics
Australia for their dedication and hard work over the past 12 months that I believe
has contributed to the success of the new administration.
With the change in administration of Gymnastics Tasmania, we saw the departure of
long term employee Gaylene King, who I would like to once again thank for the work
and efforts put in over the past 11 years. We also had the departure of Nicole Colev
from the role of Club 10 Development Officer. During her time in the role, Nicole has
been an outstanding employee. Nicole is still involved with Gymnastics Tasmania
through her role in Cheerleading and has been a great source of information for the
new Club 10 Development Officer.
Gymnastics Tasmania employed Jane Johnson as the new Club 10 Development
Officer at the start of 2011. Jane has been working 1 day from home and 1 day from
the State Gymnastics Centre. I would like to congratulate Jane on the way she has
taken on the new role with Gymnastics Tasmania, she has learnt a lot during this
year, while also managing to develop solid relationships with all clubs in the state.
The work Jane has done this year will assist Gymnastics Tasmania to grow stronger
into the future.
Highlights:
Once again hosted the Trampoline National Clubs Championships. The event
attracted 297 athletes from around the country and delivering Tasmania a
great profit.
Increase in athlete numbers from 3170 last year to 3449 at end of September,
2011. Athlete numbers will continue to grow throughout the 2011 calendar
year and it is hoped that GT can register over 3500 members.
Strong performance at national events for Trampoline, WAG and MAG
Gymsports.
Once again I would like to thank the board member, staff, committee members and
volunteers that have helped Gymnastics Tasmania move forward this year and I look
forward to working with you again next year.

Gymnastics Australia, 2011 Annual Report
In the final months of 2010 at the Annual General meeting, the
Gymnastics Tasmania Board, based on a governance review, put
to Members a motion to shift administration of the State
operations to Gymnastics Australia. This motion was
subsequently passed.
This was only one of a number of innovative decisions made for
2011, as such, Gymnastics Australia is pleased to provide this
report across five key areas to the Board, Members and
stakeholders of Gymnastics Tasmania.
Membership
The hard work of Clubs, the efforts and hours of work
contributed by staff, both paid and unpaid, and the continuing
recognition of gymnastics is reflected in the continued growth
of membership throughout all categories in Tasmania. As of
17th November, 2011, Gymnastics Australia is pleased to report
that membership numbers are reaching levels never before seen
in the State:
3,397 Athlete registrations
132 Coaches & Judges
On behalf of Gymnastics Tasmania we commend the achievements
of Clubs, mentors and volunteers who have contributed to this
achievement.
Club 10 Officer’s Report
To be included.
The role of stakeholder organisations, especially the
Tasmanian State Government through Sport and Recreation
Tasmania, has been a significant factor in these developments
and we thank them for their continued support.
Events
At the time of writing a number of Gymnastics Tasmania events
were still to be conducted, reflecting the numerous, year-long
opportunities available to the Tasmanian gymnastics community.
The efforts, primarily of volunteers and long-time supporters
of gymnastics in Tasmania, are greatly appreciated and make
these events the success that they are.
A second key initiative of the Tasmanian Board in 2011
included the trial of Club-based hosting of Women’s Gymnastics
events through the event tender process, the experience of
Gymnastics Australia in supporting this process suggests the
first year has been a resounding success. Whilst we must
acknowledge that the process was not without its’ challenges,
for a first year implementation, the signs are very positive
for 2012 and beyond.
Two facts have become clear with regard the conduct of events
in Tasmania during 2011. Firstly, the gymnastic community
remains quite independent and capable to conduct events, when
provided with the appropriate resources and direction.
Secondly, the processes and communication between Gymnastics
Australia and the relevant ‘host’ Club or Sport Management
Committee can be streamlined. Gymnastics Australia looks
forward to the opportunity to improve this experience for all
event participants in 2012.
Special mention must also be made of the three State Teams who
competed and their respective National Championships, Men’s
Gymnastics, Women’s Gymnastics and Trampoline Sports. The
efforts of team managers and support personnel, including
coaches and judges, is highly valued and greatly appreciated.
2011 Trampoline National Clubs
Special mention must be made of the very successful Trampoline
National Clubs event again hosted by Gymnastics Tasmania.
This event will ultimately return for the sport on the
investment of time, money and effort that was made by so many.
Excluding the Trampoline National Clubs, Gymnastics Tasmania
experienced nearly 2,000 entrants in events in 2011, and saw a
return in excess of $30,000 to Clubs.
Education
Whilst attention has already turned to finalising preparations
and promoting the 2012 Congress, this year commenced with
Congress and Gymsport Clinics utilising extensive local and
inter-State expertise. The Congress, ably hosted at PCYC
Launceston, saw high numbers and a variety of workshops,
including Gymnastics for All National Program Manager Petrina
Hutchinson, National Women’s Gymnastics Choreographer Stacey
Umeh and former English and current West Australian trampoline
specialist, Elliot Stratton, not to mention a number of inter-
State Gymsport specialists.
Throughout 2011, a unique occurrence took place, with every
Gymsport hosting either a coach, judge or in some instances
both, course. The net result being 106 coaches and 55 judges
entered to courses. This comes on top of the 179 Congress
participants in January. The net result is seen in the growth
in Technical Membership in 2011.
Administration
This first year of providing administrative support has led to
new experiences, some minor challenges and the establishment
of new working relationships with many Tasmanian gymnastics
community members. Gymnastics Australia looks forward to
simplifying processes, responding to community feedback and
further enhancing participants’ experience of the sport of
gymnastics.
The open Club forum hosted in Launceston in late October
provided a great connection to the community and confirmed
that Gymnastics Australia and Tasmania were on track.
Gymnastics Australia would like to extend special thanks to
the 2011 Board Members; Mark, John, Ludmila, Pauline, Peter,
Greg, Charles and Mick. To the Sport Management Committees
and volunteers, in particular to President Mark Moncur, and
SMC Heads John, Anke, Mardi, Ben and Nicole, without whose
support the year would have been far more challenging. And to
Jane Johnson who took on the role of Club 10 Development
Officer in 2011, making herself available to every Club in the
State and seeking to represent and provide solutions to the
key issues affecting the State.
On behalf of Gymnastics Australia

Club 10 Tasmania, 2011 Annual Report
2011 has seen a great deal of importance placed on the role of Club Development officer within Tasmania. This Club 10 role of building up relationships between the clubs and officer, as well as the first point of contact for clubs, is vital to help the clubs develop into the future. I would like to acknowledge the support I have received from Geoff Rietschel, Mark Moncur, Nicole Colev, Kingborough staff and other Gymnastics Tasmania personnel for their understanding and patience as I continue to learn this role. Affiliation The affiliation process ran smoothly in 2011, with the majority of clubs returning forms in a timely manner. Within the 2012 affiliation packages we hope to have ready a list of responsibilities throughout GA and GT, and contact names on who to contact for all inquiries. Membership The PCYC agreement looks set to be continued for a further 3 years. 2010 membership packages were all distributed in time for the commencement of classes for 2011. GA have already started the 2012 affiliation process and these will be distributed to the 16 Tasmanian clubs at the appropriate time. As of the 8/11/2011 Gymnastics Tasmania has 3444 registered athletes. Star Categories The majority of Tasmanian affiliated clubs retained or increased their star ratings in 2011. Eastside Activity Centre, being a new club affiliated with Gymnastics Tasmania has achieved their Star 3 rating for 2012, wish is a commendable effort. Hobart Gymnastics Academy and Riverside has submitted their documentation to have their star rating increased to a Star 4. Calendar The 2012 calendar if well underway for next year. The emphasis will be to ensure the different disciplines are not doubling up on the same weekends. By each SMC submitting the calendars earlier than usual this will help to ensure a smooth 2012 calendar of events. 2011 Gymnastic Tasmania Forum This Forum took place on the 23rd of October 2012. This was a great opportunity for the Gymnastics Tasmania community to come together and discuss the future of how we as a state can move forward into 2012. Jane Johnson Club 10 Development Officer

The GT competitions were well attended and ran successfully this year. It was good to have
the entries from Launceston PCYC, Zodiacs and Exeter at the Devonport Competition, and
we will hope this augurs well for the future.
State Championships and Trans-Bass Challenge
There were 46 entries from clubs around the State and Victoria, with strong contingents from
Devonport, Kingborough and PIT, and entries from Hobart Gymnastics Academy and
Launceston PCYC.
Kingborough took out the Shell Shield for overall champion club and individual honours were
shared round. After a lean spell, Tasmania reclaimed the Shield from PIT in the Trans Bass
Challenge.
We were fortunate once again to have the assistance of Paul Szyjko and Andrew Martin as
head judges. The Championships ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of the experienced team
from Kingborough.
National Championships
This year’s team to Nationals comprised a team at Level 8 Open and individuals at Level 7
Open. Team management comprised John Hargreaves and Pauline Dittmann with Coach:
Kyle Giles and Judges: Andrew Martin, John Hargreaves and Pauline Dittmann.
The most notable results were Ricky Maui’s first on parallel bars, Brady Lillico’s 2nd on vault
and Sam Crean’s 3rd on high bar at level 8. All gymnasts competed competently and justified
their selection.
All in all it was a successful campaign. Once again we just missed a bronze team medal
placing fourth at level 8. There were minor issues due to the new office arrangements and
being accommodated at the AIS without ground transport, and the SMC plans to revisit the
job descriptions for officials and tighten up the selection procedure for the future.
Coaches Workshops & Clinics
Coaches Congress and Clinic
Aaron Thanas, a senior international gymnast from Victoria, led the MAG Congress this
year, with the usual coaches’ workshop on the first day and clinic on the second. Both were
well attended and Aaron’s presentations were well received. The Clinic at Kingborough was
a great start to the year for 13 of our higher level gymnasts.
State Team Training
A training session for the State Team to Nationals was held at Kingborough on 18 June led
by John Hargreaves and Kyle Giles. The preparation for the team was more extensive than
usual, comprising an earlier Invitational Competition and two trials, the second being a two
day event.
Training Clinics
Andrew Martin has continued to lead training clinics at Kingborough. Two have been held
(in March and September) and another is planned in November. These two day events have
become important for both gymnasts and coaches providing updating opportunities. It is
proposed to continue with this valuable initiative of Andrew’s, which has proved so
successful, and direct future clinics at junior development as well as the senior gymnasts in
2012.
The availability of Kingborough at reasonable cost continues to be a great facility for the
future development of MAG in the State.
Judging The following judges’ courses were held this year:
Date Level of Course Number attending
6 March Beginner 7
20 March Intermediate 3
Following the training, the number of qualified judges is as follows:
Judging Level Number of Judges
FIG 2
Advanced 1
Intermediate 7
Beginner 10 (est.)
Sam Whittle has continued to present the accredited courses and John Hargreaves has run
some workshops for candidates preparing for the advanced course which is planned in the
near future.

The Drop in Numbers at Level 1-3 can be partly explained by Kingborough Gymnastics
introducing their own internal system for lower levels and no longer using the National Level
1-3 program. The attendance at GT events has been similar to recent years apart from the
loss of entries from Hobart PCYC which has ceased its MAG program.
Sports Management Committee
This year the MG SMC comprised the following members:
Chair John Hargreaves
Technical Assistant Andrew Martin
Judging Coordinator Sam Whittle
Coaching Coordinator Kyle Giles
Competition Coordinator Kodee Voss
Nationals Coordinator Pauline Dittmann
The Committee met four times through the year.

After many years in the position of Men’s Technical Adviser, I am finally retiring. I am happy
to be handing over to Andrew Martin and have full confidence in him and his team in the MG
SMC. I have enjoyed my involvement with Gymnastics Tasmania and the many good people
I have worked with. To single out people is always dangerous owing to unintended
omissions, but I’ll risk it – particular thanks to Bob Wherrett, Gary Pitchford, Mark Moncur
and Pauline Dittmann.

NATIONALS 3 Gymnasts represented Gymnastics Tasmania at Nationals. While the number of girls was low the standards was very good with all girls qualifying for finals. Georgina Osborn placed 2nd on Vault at Level 7 and Olivia Burnett proved that she has the ability to perform at level 10 placing 5th overall on the second day of competition.
JUDGES EDUCATION COORDINATOR REPORT WAG Beginner courses were run in the north and south. WAG Intermediate course was run in Launceston. The WAG Advanced course was run in Launceston.
COACH EDUCATION The congress 2011 was well attended with Stacey Umeh presenting. Anke Moncur- WAG Technical Director
Rhythmic Gymnastics, Annual Report 2011 COACHING The number of currently accredited coaches in Tasmania has remained consistent this year, with a further 5 participants attending the Level 1 course held at HGA in April. The candidates attending represented the 3 southern clubs involved in RG: Kingborough, Hobart Gymnastics Academy and Hobart PCYC. The course was run by Jo Edinger from WA and the feedback from those who attended was all very positive. JUDGING The area of judging is still an issue, especially given the new requirements where judges are required for Difficulty, Artistry and Execution. Thanks to those who have continued to judge at all events this year. A number of coaches, gymnasts and parents have recently expressed an interest in becoming judges so a Beginner judging course will be high priority in early 2012. EVENTS Competitions and National Award Tests this year have been well supported, and it is good to see the number of gymnasts attending increasing, especially in the lower levels. Riverside Gymnastics have also recommenced classes this year, and are looking at attending events during 2012, which will get us back to having 4 active clubs within the discipline. State Championships were held in conjunction with MAG/WAG again this year and is still a very positive way of promoting Rhythmic within the community and allowing gymnasts the opportunity of a larger scale competition. The competition ran extremely smoothly this year with no issues arising and was a very enjoyable event for all involved. The only negative was not being able to have an interstate judge attend due to lower competitor numbers at this level, but I would expect the numbers to increase for next year. Much thanks to all those who were involved in the organization of this event, and those who worked tirelessly on the day. The last event of the year is scheduled for Sunday 20th November at HGA and will involve gymnasts from all levels.

Competitions
Tasmanian athletes competed in a variety of local, interstate, national, and international events. International In 2011, seven Tasmanian athletes nominated for a position on the Australian Team. Two Tasmanian athletes were chosen to represent Australia at the World Age Championships (22-25 November) which are being held in Birmingham, UK. The athletes selected to represent Australia at this event were Hugh McConnell (Under 15) and Aidan Collins (Under 17). Three Tasmanian officials were also selected, Jo Penny (Team Manager), Ben Kelly (Assistant DMT Coach – not attending) and Leigh Oswin (TRP Judge). In addition, two athletes were chosen to represent Australia at other international events. Jack Penny was selected to compete in the China World Cup (20th place Individual Trampoline), and Aidan Collins the Trans-Tasman Challenge (Australia – 1st place Men’s DMT). Unfortunately, Jack Penny sustained serious injury whilst competing in China in the Synchronised event. Jack damaged ligaments in his left ankle as well as muscle damage to his left elbow. The Tasmanian TRP SMC would like to thank the following people for supporting Jack in China during this ordeal and when returning home - Ty Swadling, Tessa Storey, Nikolay Zhurvavlev, Adam Sachs, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport, Dr Howard Bye and, Aleem Kahalfam. National Championships Tasmania sent 16 athletes to the Australian National Championships. Aidan Collins defended his 2010 title by winning the Under 17 Men’s DMT competition, while Hugh McConnell won gold in Under 15 Men’s SYN event with partner Curtis Booth from WA. Tasmania was also part of the winning UTA Team for Elite Men’s SYN as well as the Overall Elite Trophy. In addition to this, Leigh Oswin was awarded the 2010 Gymnastics Australia National Official of the Year for his contribution to judging in Trampoline Gymnastics. It was predicted that Tasmania would field more DMT representatives in 2011 after a change in qualification scores in 2010. Fifteen out of the sixteen State Team members competed in DMT in 2011.
The 2011 Tasmanian National Championship Team is listed below.
Head of Delegation: Jo Penny Management: Carolyn Kirkpatrick, Davina Sauerwald State Coach: Ben Kelly Coaching Staff: Pip Hedley Judges: Leigh Oswin (FIG), Alison Morgan (Advanced), Jack Penny (Advanced), Martin Vitesnik (Advanced) Team Captains: Damien Axelsen, Rose Bowerman Catering: Fiona Buckingham Championship Team: Makonnen Brown, Aidan Collins, Hugh McConnell, Ryan Williams (Junior International) Damien Axelsen, Matthew Gough (Senior International) Age Team: Mikaela Lunn (Under 11), Patrick Schluter (U11), Khya Clark (U13), Ebony Denholm (Under 13), Matthew French (Under 13), Joshua Hedley-Williams (Under 13), Blair Kirkpatrick (U13), Alex Pugh-Harris (Under 13), Makonnen Brown (Under 15), Hugh McConnell (Under 15), Ryan Williams (Under 15), Rose Bowerman (U17), Adian Collins (Under 17), Musashi Ledger (U17), Damien Axelsen (17+), Matthew Gough (17+) Chaperones: Claire Bowerman, Rach Denholm, Karen French, Clare McConnell, Ann Schluter, Tanya Williams
Local competitions Trampoline Sports ran two State Championships in 2011. These were well supported with the State Age & Elite Championships in Hobart in April and the State Level Championships held in Launceston in October. Tumbling was held at both of these Championships for the first time. Numbers were low in both instances with only 2 entries at State Age, and 5 entries at State Levels (with only 3 competing). The TAS TRP SMC will continue to support Tumbling in 2012, however, may have to reconsider in 2013 if Tumbling clubs are not supporting events. A brief summary of these championships are below.

Trampoline Sports ran three Interclubs in 2011; the third Interclub which is being held in December and therefore will not be reported on here. The third Interclub was originally scheduled in August but was cancelled due to a lack of officials. It was rescheduled for December and will be a novice Interclub (level 1-6 only, no qualifying events) and therefore is able to be run in one day. A brief summary of all Interclub competitions are below.
March, Eastside Trampoline Club (Age & Elite, Levels)
o Number of Competitors: 102
o Number of Entries: 221
May, Launceston PCYC (Levels & Elite)
o Number of Competitors: 75
o Number of Entries: 261
Due to recent, GA recommendations relating judging expectations at National Championships Qualifying events(e.g., sanctioned interclubs); a slight change in the way in which interclubs are run in 2011 may occur with more age group interclubs being necessary 2010 National Club Levels Gymnastics Tasmania convened the 2011 National Club Levels Competition at the Kingborough Sports Centre in August. The National Club Levels competition is a high profile event in the National Trampoline calendar, attracting competitors from every state. In 2011, the National Club Levels competition was the final and compulsory trial for the 2011 World Age Championship Team, and the premier event for the discipline of Tumbling. This was the second time Tasmania has held this event, with many positive reports coming from the attending clubs. The organising committee of Mark Moncur, Jo Penny, Ben Kelly, Leigh Oswin and Ludmila Vitesnikova, did an excellent job of hosting this
championship. Special thanks go to the clubs which supplied equipment to the event (Kingborough and Launceston). Special thanks to the extra volunteers who helped to pull down the venue, including High Flyers Club (WA) and Robertson Gym Club (QLD). The Kingborough Gym Club staff also did an excellent job in their tasks of helping to run this event and develop the circulars prior to the competition. The Launceston PCYC was ranked 4th Overall Club at this event and the following athlete won National Levels events at this competition – Hugh McConnell (Level 8 Men’s TRP).

The goal of the State Squad system is to identify potential State Team athletes for the current year, as well as to provide extra training and competition experience to help promote and develop these talents to their full potential. Due to the early date set for National Championships, the process used to achieve membership to these squads will be slightly amended for the 2012 competition season.

Cheerleading, Annual Report 2011
2011 has been a successful year for cheerleading in Tasmania both on and off the
competition floor. On the education side, both a coach’s course and level 1 judge’s
course were conducted this year with 5 members attending the judges course and 4
attending the coaches course. We also had two members; Haylee Townsend and
Angela Barnard, start the process to allow them to present courses in Tasmania
allowing us to operate independently of Gymnastics Australia.
On the competition front, two events were held in Tasmania and conducted by
Southern All Stars Cheer & Dance as the recognised provider of events for AUS
Cheer in Tasmania. Both events were well attended with AUS Cheer Australian
Challenge in May attracting 75 athletes and AUS Cheer Australian Showdown
attracting 132 athletes – the largest cheerleading event held in Tasmania. Southern
All Stars Cheer & Dance also fielded teams at the Aloha International Spirit
Championships in Hawaii and AUS Cheer Australian Grand National Championships
with success at both events fuelling growth in the sport here in Tasmania.
There has been some difficulty in gaining support and assistance from Gymnastics
Australia for these events this year due to the uncertainty surrounding the sport at a
National level. At this stage the future direction of cheerleading is unclear however;
there is strong support here in Tasmania for a competition series to continue.
