BBC EDITORIAL GUIDELINES BBC Ethical Code How it imposes constraints on media production? How it could affect your product negatively How it could affect your product positively Truth and Accuracy  The BBC guidelines look to establish the truth to the audience. They say that it’s not just to get facts right, they feel that the output should be appropriate to its subject and nature. I think that this rule can affect my product negatively if I were to present a fake or imposter dancer/dance instructor. This will not be telling to truth to the audience. I think that this rule can affect my product positively because now that I know that the truth has to be exposed to the audience I will not attempt to use fake people in my production. Impartiality and Diversity of Opinion  The BBC guidelines think that the output that will be presented to the audience will not be biased or but will reflect a diversity of opinion.  This could affect my product if I were to show a subject or topic that was biased to only one side of the story, or If I were to favour only one angle. For example, if I was to show how white people should only perform the dance form of Ballroom.  This can affect my product positively because now I know that my angle has to fair and show the diversity of different opinions. For example, I shouldn’t show only one side of the story about I should show both negative and positive sides. Editorial Integrity and Independence  The BBC guidelines are determined to make sure that the audience should be confident that their decisions are not influenced by anyone or anything. I think that this rule can affect my product negatively if I were to let my product be influenced by and media, political or personal interest. For example, if I was to show a statement from the media that was against street dancing, this would be influenced by the media interest. Now that I know that my product cannot be influenced by anyone or anything, I have to make sure that I do not take any political, media or personal sources seriously and influence my product. For example, if somewhere in politics or the media have commented about a specific dance from, I shouldn’t let that comment influence my documentary. Serving the public interest  The BBC guidelines are firm to make sure that whatever I think that this can affect my product negatively  This can affect my product in a positive way

BBC EDITORIAL GUIDELINES

BBC EthicalCode

How itimposes

constraints onmediaproduction?

How it couldaffect your

productnegatively

How it couldaffect your

productpositively

Truth andAccuracy

The BBC guidelineslook to establishthe truth to the

audience. They saythat it’s not just to

get facts right, they feel that theoutput should beappropriate to its

subject and nature.

I think that this rulecan affect my

product negativelyif I were to presenta fake or imposter

dancer/danceinstructor. This will

not be telling totruth to theaudience.

I think that this rulecan affect my

product positivelybecause now that Iknow that the truthhas to be exposedto the audience I

will not attempt touse fake people inmy production.

Impartialityand Diversity

of Opinion

 The BBC guidelinesthink that the

output that will bepresented to theaudience will notbe biased or but

will reflect adiversity of opinion.

This could affectmy product if Iwere to show asubject or topic

that was biased toonly one side of thestory, or If I were to

favour only oneangle. For

example, if I was toshow how white

people should only

perform the danceform of Ballroom.

 This can affect myproduct positively

because now Iknow that my angle

has to fair andshow the diversity

of differentopinions. Forexample, I

shouldn’t show onlyone side of the

story about I should

show both negativeand positive sides.

EditorialIntegrity andIndependence

The BBC guidelinesare determined tomake sure that theaudience should beconfident that theirdecisions are not

influenced byanyone oranything.

I think that thisrule can affect myproduct negativelyif I were to let my

product beinfluenced by andmedia, political orpersonal interest. For example, if Iwas to show a

statement from the

media that wasagainst street

dancing, this wouldbe influenced by

the media interest.

Now that I knowthat my product

cannot beinfluenced by

anyone oranything, I have tomake sure that I do

not take anypolitical, media orpersonal sources

seriously and

influence myproduct. Forexample, if

somewhere inpolitics or themedia have

commented abouta specific dance

from, I shouldn’t letthat commentinfluence my

documentary.

Serving thepublic interest

The BBC guidelinesare firm to make

sure that whatever

I think that thiscan affect my

product negatively

This can affect myproduct in apositive way

the product’s topicor subject is, it

should be in thepublic interest, itshould relate to

them somehow.

because the topic Ihave chosen to

take intoproduction

interests thepublic, however it

doesn’t serve thepublic interest, andit’s not a topic thatwill affect them in

the real world.

because eventhough this subjectdoes not serve oraffect the public

interest, it still caninterest and inform

them about thehow dance as ahobby or as aprofession hasgrown over the

years.

Fairness  The BBC guidelinessay that their

outputs are will bebased on honestly, fairness, openness

and straightdealing. They say

that they treattheir contributorsand audience with

respect.

I think that thiscan affect my

product negativelyif I were to show

something that candisrespect anyonein the audience or

anyone who isinvolved in themaking of theproduct. For

example, if I was toshow an

intervieweecommenting on

ballroom dancing asaying that it’s onlyperformed by white

people and itshould always belike that. This willbe disrespectful

towards everyonewho enjoys

ballroom dancingand who are not

white.

This can affect myproduct in apositive way

because now that Iknow that I have tobe completely fair

and respectful

towards everyoneinvolved or

watching, I canmake sure that theproduct does notcontain anythingdisrespectful. Forexample, if I am

showing aninterview with adance instructor

and asking for theiropinion on a

particularstatement, I should

be fair andrespectful towards

them and theaudience as theyhave a right toexpress their

opinion, unlesswhat they are

saying isdisrespectful to the

audience watching.

Privacy  The BBC guidelinessay that they

respect privacyand will not

infringe or getinvolved without a

valid reason.Private

information,content,

correspondence

and conversationwill not be brought

I think that thiscan affect myproduct in a

negative way If Iwere to show any

private informationthat is not suitable

for the public tosee, unless the

privateinformation,

content,correspondence

This can affect myproduct in apositive way

because now Iknow that I

shouldn’t showpersonal

information, thatshouldn’t be shown

to the public;unless I have a

valid reason toshow it and that if it

into the publicunless the public

interest outweighsthe expectation of

privacy.

and conversationcan affect the

public’s interests. For example, if Iwas to show a

hidden

conversation thatwas personal, andnot be shown toanyone one else

would be invadingtheir privacy.

affects the publicinterests.

Harm andOffence

The BBC guidelinesfeel that anythingthat can offend or

mentally/physicallyharm the audience

should not beshown on the BBC

channel. They areparticular when it

comes to therelation to theprotection of

children.

I think that this canaffect my product

in a negative way if I were to show

something in mydocumentary that

would offend

anyone in theaudience. For

example, if I wereto show an only

Asian people in mydocumentary

dancing, this canoffend other racesin the mainstreamtarget audience.

This can affect myproduct positivelybecause know thatI know that I haveto be careful when

making mydocumentary and

not to offendanyone watching Ican make sure for

example, I usedifferent peoplefrom different

genders and racesto make the

documentary fairand impartial.

Children  The BBC guidelinesfeel that the

welfare, dignity of the children whoparticipate in the

content.

I think that this canaffect my product

in a negativeway because whendoing my vox pops,

I may be askingchildren to

participate, sowhen doing this Iwill need to make

sure that myquestions do not

affect the childrenphysically ormentally.

This can affect myproduct in a

positive waybecause now that Iknow that I have to

be careful whenusing children in

my documentary, Iknow that I cannot

use or ask anyquestions that may

be unsuitable orcontroversial

Accountability The BBC guidelinesfeel that their

relationship withthe audience isvery important. And if they think

that there are anymistakes in ourcontent the BBC

would acknowledgethem.

I think that this canaffect my product

in a negativeway because I haveto make sure that

in my documentaryI do not make

anything up, orinclude any falseinformation thatcan affect theaudience.

This can affect myproduct positivelybecause know thatI know that I mustbe careful when

including i.e.statistics or

information, andthat it’s not false

and that itshouldn’t affect the

audience in anyway.
