Task:Task:
Build a car that will participate in speed and collision competitions. You can use any materials that you like
(including the wheels, but excluding the body of toy cars). In order to be the winning car, you should maximize speed
and vehicle safety.
Requirements:
You car must:
•Be less than or equal to 20 cm long
•Be less than or equal to 20 cm wide
•Have a mass less than or equal to 500 grams
•Roll or slide down a ramp on its own (without pushing it)
********** The more creativity, the better your grade! **********
You must provide: (all items below are included in attached documents)
•A scaled drawing of your car’s design created before you make your model
•A completed process narrative
•Measurements of your car’s mass, length, width, speed, velocity, and momentum
•Predictions about the outcome of collisions based on a comparison of the competitor’s momentums
•A discussion of the forces acting on your car
•A completed reflection
Rubric 4 3 2 1Meets all requirements:•Design is drawn to scale •Meets all size requirements. •Design narrative is detailed, thorough, and free of errors.•Identifies the forces acting on the car

Demonstrates thoughtful reflection on how the project illustrates a solid understanding of the principles of motion. Writing is neat, organized, and error-free.
Demonstrates some understanding of the principles of motion. Writing is neat, organized, but may include a few errors.
Demonstrates little understanding of motion. Writing is legible, but may include a few errors.
Does not demonstrate an understanding of motion. Wring may include errors.
Standards Addressed:PS5.1a: The motion of an object is always judged with respect to some other object or point. The idea of absolute motion or rest is misleading.PS5.1b: The motion of an object can be described by its position, direction of motion, and speed.PS5.1c: An object’s motion is the result of the combined effect of all forces acting on the object. PS5.1d: Force is directly related to an object’s mass and acceleration. The greater the force, the greater the change in motion.PS5.1e: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.PS5.2a: Every object exerts gravitational force on every other object. Gravitational force depends on how much mass the objects have and on how far apart they are. Gravity is one of the forces acting on orbiting objects and projectiles.PS5.2d: Friction is a force that opposes motion.
Big Goals Addressed:
•80% Mastery of Content Objectives You will demonstrate mastery of our human body objectives•Become articulate communicators You will demonstrate your writing skills by developing text describing your tour through the human body•Become Scientific Problem Solvers You must solve the problem of maximizing speed without compromising safety
Use your knowledge of the principles of motion to brainstorm what features of your car will maximize speed
and safety.
What makes a car fast? What helps a car survive a collision?
Draw an example of a design that Draw an example of a design that
would be fast would survive a crash

Scaled Drawing
Attach a scaled drawing of your design on graph paper.
Design Narrative
In your own words, describe the thought process that you went through while designing your car.
Please address:
• How your design will maximize speed without compromising safety
• The materials and process you will use to create your vehicle (and why you selected those materials)

Measurements
Please fill in the data table for your vehicle. Round to the nearest tenth and nclude the correct units.
Predictions
On the lines, please predict the outcome of a collision with one of your classmate’s vehicles.
Be sure to address the relevance of both cars’ momentums.

Understanding of Motion and Forces
Now that you have completed your vehicle and participated in the competitions, reflect on your
understanding of motion and forces. Please address:
• How your vehicle reflects your knowledge of motion and forces (aerodynamics, etc.)
• How your vehicle’s design impacted its performance in both competitions
• Whether or not your predictions for the collision was correct and why
• What you learned about motion and forces through this project____________________________________________________________________________________
