TASK 11: Read the following description of Superman. Match the highlighted

words to the definitions.

Superman is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 225 pounds. His hair is jet black,

with a natural curl in front, and he has blue eyes. He has a rugged

bodybuilder’s physique and a square “hero’s jaw.” His costume is essentially

a pair of bright blue long johns, red trunks and boots, a red cape and a yellow

belt. The famous Superman logo -- the seal of his Kryptonian family --

appears on his chest. Superman is gentle, kind-hearted and selfless. He is also

resolute, with a firm knowledge of right and wrong and an ability to act

decisively in a crisis.

His perennial love interest is fellow "Daily Planet" reporter Lois Lane.

Superman has superhuman strength and is invulnerable. He can fly. He

possesses X-ray vision, allowing him to see through walls, and he has heat

vision, allowing him to shoot red-hot beams out of his eye. He can exhale

with hurricane force if he chooses, as well as supercool his breath to freeze

objects. His only weakness is kryptonite: radioactive meteorites from his

home planet that render him powerless and poison him.

a) Breathe out = -----------------------------------------------

b) The form and size of a person’s body = -------------------------

c) Lasting or existing for a long time = ---------------------------------------------

Page 10: TASK 1: Who are these superheroes? Label each one in the space …… · heroes are in green and the villains are in red. Sinestro Green Lantern Wolverine Batman The Joker X Men Magneto

TASK 14: You are going to create your own superhero. You are going to get

some ideas by interviewing some of the people in your family and asking

them what they think a superhero should be like. Make some notes to help

with your ideas. Here are some questions you could ask.

If you were a

superhero, would you

be male or female?

How old would you be?

Where would you live?

What would your superhero

name be? And what would

your alter ego name be?

What would your

costume be like? What

colour?

What super powers

would you have? What vehicle would

you have?

How did you

get your

powers?

What logo would

you have on your

costume? What weaknesses

do you have?

What is the name

of your arch

enemy? What do

they look like?

In your opinion,

what is the best

part of being a

super hero?

And finally, what is the worst

part of being a super hero?

Page 11: TASK 1: Who are these superheroes? Label each one in the space …… · heroes are in green and the villains are in red. Sinestro Green Lantern Wolverine Batman The Joker X Men Magneto

TASK 15: Now you should have lots of ideas of your own. You could ask

someone to ‘hot seat’ you and ask you the same questions, if they have time.

Then fill out the ideas grid below.

TASK 19: If you can, go to the internet and watch the following clip. Don’t

worry if you can’t find it, just leave out tasks 19 and 20.

You could also try googling you tube Penguin! Plan!

TASK 20: Write a short paragraph, about 5 – 7 sentences, about what you

think will happen next.

TASK 21: Read the following account by one of Batman’s arch enemies, The

Penguin.

I hate Batman! I mean, I really hate Batman! He has absolutely no sense of

humour. We’ve known each other for a long time now and he is seriously boring.

Take yesterday for example. I was working downtown as usual, just trying to

execute my evil plan of taking over the world, when who should show up? Yes.

You’ve got it in one. Batman.

My cunning plan was to destroy Gotham City by using a forcefield to crash an

asteroid into it. I hate Gotham City just as much as I hate Batman. I was then going

to use cyber animals, (which I’d stolen obviously), to pick through the rubble and

find anything valuable. The cyber animals were magnificent! They had been

invented by a brilliant scientist, who met rather a nasty end. How sad!

It was all going so well. The forcefield was working. Police were crashing into it.

The city was in chaos. There was a spectacular light show in the sky! And then,

Batman showed up ……

TASK 22: Read The Penguin’s Story again. You are going to look for nouns,

adjectives and verbs. Highlight or underline all the nouns in one colour, the

adjectives in another colour and the verbs in another. If you’re not sure

which are which, the following poem might help.

TASK 23: Now on a separate piece of paper, rewrite the story from Batman’s

point of view. Use as many details from the video and The Penguin’s Story as

you can. Remember to use the first person (I) as this is Batman’s account.

Also use the past tense as the events are over.

TASK 24: Imagine you are a reporter for The Gotham City News. Write 7

questions you would like to ask an eye witness.

Page 15: TASK 1: Who are these superheroes? Label each one in the space …… · heroes are in green and the villains are in red. Sinestro Green Lantern Wolverine Batman The Joker X Men Magneto

TASK 25: Imagine the headlines on the following day. Create the front page

of The Gotham City News. You’ll need to include a date, headlines and

subheadings, some details of what happened, an eyewitness report and

some pictures. Use the examples below to help you.
