Cleopatra's Gate

Cleoptra's Gate is a city gate of Tarsus, in Mersin Province, Turkey, named after the Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII.

The Tarsus gate of Cleopatra, also called the “Sea Gate,” still stands today, though it has been significantly restored. It was believed that Cleopatra sailed up the Cydnus disguised as Aphrodite and came through this gate in 41 B.C. on her way to meet Mark Antony.

It is a town gate from the Roman period is described as Cleopatra's Gate. It was the entrance of Tarsus, a major Roman city of its time. In Roman times, people used to sail under the gate by boats when the city was located at the Mediterranean coast. Today the sea is an approximate 10km away from Cleopatra's Gate due to rivers filling the water.
