The reason behind this is that it is costing us over $100 per fortnight to run off a black and white newsletter and over $200 if it is in colour ! This change was discussed at our recent P&C and approved. Some paper copies will still be available upon request from the office for each newsletter throughout the year. The Tarro mobile phone app is FREE. Instructions to access are;- “Go to the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Search Tarro Public School and download the app to your mobile device. The user name is community and the password is tarrops .” (all in lower case) Via this app the school will send out notifications and reminders that you will be able to receive instantaneously on your mobile device. This allows for a clear and timely line of direct communication between home and school for all families. Paper newsletter copies will still be sent home for the remainder of this term but will cease with this terms last newsletter in late June. Newsletter E-mail Further, if you have changed your e-mail address or would like the newsletter e-mailed to you, please let Anne or Karyn or Lesley know in the office and it will be e-mailed each fortnight. Facebook Please note, that the school does not have an official Tarro Public School Facebook page. We are reviewing to see if it is possible for a staff member (teaching or office) to be the moderator of an official page. The moderator has to be school based member of staff. Time is the biggest factor. New Play Equipment Installation Date I received a phone call on 10 th May advising us that the new playground is due to be installed the week commencing 14 th June (straight after Queen’s Birthday long weekend Enrolling Now for 2017 If your child will be starting Kindergarten at Tarro Public School in 2017 please leave your information at the office. Enrolment packages will be sent out when Kindergarten Orientation details have been finalised. Christopher Parkinson Principal Principal School Leadership | High Performance M.L.M.Ed., M.Ed.Studies.

Principal’s Reflections Electronic Newsletters via the App We are moving our fortnightly paper newsletters to an electronic version via the school app and the school web address being:- www.tarro-p.schools.nsw.edu.au .

The reason behind this is that it is costing us over $100 per fortnight to run off a black and white newsletter and over $200 if it is in colour ! This change was discussed at our recent P&C and approved. Some paper copies will still be available upon request from the office for each newsletter throughout the year.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Breakfast Club Donations Please consider making a donation to support Tarro Public School’s Breakfast Club. We regularly use vegemite, honey, strawberry jam, cereal (rice bubbles, weetbix, cornflakes), serviettes, plastic cups and long-life full cream milk. Donations can be left in Mrs Parkes’ classroom. If you would prefer to make a monetary donation, this can be left at the office. THANK YOU. Rock & Water Information Throughout 2016 a range of students from different stages will be involved in a Rock and Water Program that will be implemented by Mr O’Connor on a weekly basis. Rock and Water is a course that is delivered over a number of lessons to students to develop confidence, self-reflection, resilience and understanding about who they are and their personal direction. More information can be found at http://rockandwater.com.au/wordpress/

Sport for Life Gymnastics Program During term 2 students will have the opportunity to participate in a 6 wk Gymnastics Program. This program will run on a Thursday starting week 2. We are very fortunate to have received a grant from NSW Sport in Schools which provides the students the opportunity to participate in this program free of charge.

SPORT REPORT Zone Touch Football Trials Congratulations to both Jett Robards-Hassall and Regan Fitzpatrick who were recently selected to compete at the Zone Touch Football trials. Both students put on a great show and were selected for the possible and probables on the day, with Jett being chosen to represent the Maitland Zone at the regional trials this Friday May 20.

Zone Cross Country Last Friday May 13, 28 students from Tarro PS competed at the Zone Cross Country Carnival at Tocal College. This is the largest group of students that have qualified to compete at the Zone Carnival before. Our students did a fantastic job in hot and windy conditions with all students doing their best.

2016 School Athletics Carnival The Tarro PS Athletics Carnival will be held this Friday May 20 at Woodberry Oval. Students will need to be there by 9am and the carnival will finish at approximately 1.30pm. Private transport will need to be arranged for students both to and from the oval. This year we will be running our own Athletics Carnival just for Tarro Public School students. The P&C will be providing hot food and drinks all day in the canteen. It will be a great day for the students to participate in a range of track and field events. We will be looking for volunteers on the day to help with both student events and in the canteen.

Pivotal Cup Challenge - Basketball This Saturday May 21, Tarro Public School has been invited to participate in the Pivotal Cup Challenge. This is a new initiative by Newcastle Basketball in conjunction with the Newcastle Hunters Waratah Championship teams. Those students that have been selected will compete in 2 different teams in a skills based competition, challenging the students in 4 key areas; running, dribbling, passing & shooting. The winning school will receive $5000 worth of sporting equipment for their school.

Students need to be at Newcastle Basketball Stadium, Broadmeadow (Main Court) no later than 6.15pm where they will meet Tarro PS teachers and other participants. Please wear full sports uniform. Entry entitles you to see both the Women’s Championship game before and Men’s Championship game afterwards, best of luck to all students that are participating.

PSSA Soccer Competition Tarro Public School will be involved in the PSSA Soccer Gala Day on Friday 27

th May at Allan & Don Lawrence Oval. Tarro

PS is organising this great opportunity for our students to compete against other schools in our local area. Our P&C will be running the canteen on the day. Students have been training hard during their lunchtimes with final teams for boys and girls being chosen this week and permission notes to follow. Hope to see lots of local support on the day.

SCHOOL INFORMATION No Hat, No Play Just a reminder that Tarro Public School is a sun safe school – all students out in the playground will need to be wearing their school hat. Those students without a hat will be asked to play under the sheltered area near the office.

Student Absences Sometimes students stay at home for reasons that are not acceptable. For example:

Birthdays

Too tired to come to school because of a late night

Stay home with siblings or parents who are sick

Staying away for a whole day when an appointment

booked for a short time in the morning or afternoon.

The weather, for example it’s too hot, too cold or

raining.

Students staying home for these reasons will be marked as an unjustified absence. Regular attendance helps your child:

o Develop the skills needed to access the world of work and other opportunities

o To learn the importance of punctuality and routine

o Make and keep friendships.

Lost Property Come along and have a look in the lost property bin in the foyer at school, as it is overflowing with clothing.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Fire & Rescue NSW Open Day 2016 Fire & Rescue NSW is hosting its annual Fire Station Open Day

on Saturday, 21 May 2016 between 10am and 2pm. Children

and their parents are invited to watch fire safety

demonstrations, hop aboard our station’s fire truck, hold a

fire hose, pick up a Brigade Kids fire safety activity booklet

and LEGO City Minifigures, and chat with firefighters about

what they do. This is a fantastic opportunity for children and

their parents to meet their local firefighters and with winter

just around the corner, which is the worst time of the year for

house fires, this is a great opportunity to learn as much as

you can about home fire safety. So come along to Tarro Fire

Station, Eastern Ave Tarro.
