TARMAG

It’s our 2nd monthly edition already of TarMag - Track and Road Magazine. So much work has gone into our 2nd issue to keep our readers busy! Our design team has improved some of the pages from last month’s issue, but if you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to get in touch.

This month we have hooked up with lots of companies for some exciting articles, we have even had a car designed for us which we plan to start making in the near future. We had a enjoyable but wet time up at Knockhill, we attended TRAX, and we have a rather exciting Mitsubishi Evo to show you!

Whilst I’m sure you are aware of the current Credit crunch, not just in the UK but all over the world, you will appreciate TarMag is completely free, and TarMag’s success depends on you, the readers. If you enjoy TarMag please tell people about us, the more readers, the better the magazine gets with more exotic cars, more reviews from all around the world! We have an added feature in the magazine to tell a friend, the above symbol should be at the bottom of your screen, if you click it, it gives you the option to tell a friend!

So here we go, the October issue of TarMag, remember you can get in touch with us at any time via email, post, or tele-phone, our contact details are on the next page.

What happens when you put a Lion, Ice Cream, and a Car Park togeather?

Well you get EUROPCAR’s rental returns!

Europcar rents thousands of vehicles out a day so expects the occasional late return or damaged ve-hicle. But a recent survey of its branches revealed some of the strangest reasons for damage to cars or late returns. Ranging from an afternoon snooze to a runaway cow!

Close Encounters of the animal kind

The Liverpool branch had a shock recently when a customer returned a vehicle with damage to one of the wheel arches. On questioning it turned out a cow had escaped from a nearby field, with the farmer in hot pursuit!

It seems damage caused by animals is not a one off occurrence for Europcar. A car with a large dent across the bonnet was returned to the New-castle branch recently with a horse as the culprit. The driver watched in horror as a horse, with rider in tow, slowly backed onto the car, until it was sit-ting on the bonnet as a car on the opposite side passed on a narrow country lane!

On a wilder note, the Newport branch spotted a large chunk missing from the back bumper of a Ford Focus, the customer explained they had vis-ited Longleat Safari Park and driven through the lion’s enclosure where a lion had taken off a part of the bumper with his claws.

If that wasn’t a bizarre enough explanation, Eu-ropcar’s staff were even more astounded to hear that a family’s pot-bellied pig had taken a shining to the rental car keys and had taken them outside to her water bowl. When the customer went to retrieve them the keys and the car had disap-peared. The car was later recovered and a youth was arrested!

Ice cream

Who would have thought something as inno-cent as an ice cream could be the cause of an accident but that was exactly the case when a customer returned a damaged car to the Derby branch. She explained that she was hit from behind by a van. When she asked the van driver what had caused the collision he said his ice cream had fallen off his seat and distracted him!

Nap turns to panic as prank causes late return

An afternoon nap is a luxury in the modern world, but for one Europcar customer it turned into a panic. The customer decided to take a snooze in his rental car before returning to the Derby branch but during his time in the land of nod his friend took the keys out of the ignition as a joke.

Bin and Gone

Then there was the customer who rang to say that they had left the car keys for their rental vehicle for collection in their recycling bin as they were going out. However it later became apparent that a friendly neighbour thought they had forgotten to put the bin out and kindly positioned it for collection by the bin men – and the keys were duly dumped!

Lost and Found

From missing keys to missing cars, a worried customer called the Birmingham South branch recently after her rental car went missing in a multi-storey, after a lot of searching the cus-tomer remembered she had changed the vehicle over the day before and was looking for the old one!

Catriona Lougher of Europcar comments; “Eu-ropcar staff are certainly kept on their toes by customers and there is never a dull day in the office with some of these stories. But staff are always professional and understanding no mat-ter how bizarre the reason for damage or late return.”

Ford dealers offer Mountune Performance for Focus ST

2.5-litre Duratec ST engine can now be tuned to 260PS Prices from £1,120 plus fitting at specialist Ford dealers

Ford is offering Focus ST perfor-mance upgrades through a special dealer-fit option. The Mountune Performance package will retail at £1,120 (plus fitting) and consists of a larger intercooler, a high-flow air filter and revised engine calibration. Together, this lifts power output from Ford’s potent 2.5-litre Duratec ST engine from 225PS to 260PS at 5,500rpm and from 320Nm to 400Nm at 2,500rpm. The upgrade

reduces the 0-60mph sprint by 0.6sec to 5.9sec, and the 0-100mph time by 1.9sec to 14.1sec.

The performance gain follows similar Mountune upgrades for the popular Fiesta ST which have been made available from Ford dealers earlier this year. Both have been verified on British B roads and over numerous laps of the famous Nur-burgring circuit in Germany.

Developed by Mountune Perfor-mance in association with Ford Team RS, these packages will only be available at selected specialist Ford dealers’ from Sept 2008. The upgrades carry a minimum of 12 months/12,000-mile dealer war-ranty up to a maximum of three years/36,000 miles. The upgrade kit does not affect the vehicle war-ranty.

Top Gear fan Rick Fusari grabbed the che -quered f lag and won the race to buy THE 571G during the climax of DVLA Person-alised Registrations’ three-day auction at the Haycock Hotel in Wansford, Cam-bridgeshire.

The 45-year-old paid a total of £10,690 for the unique plate - more than 26 times its £400 reser ve - made ‘ famous’ for its obvi-ous link to the myster y race-ace and hugely popular f igure from the Top Gear T V show.

Mr Fusari, who runs the Greenford Motors car dealership in West London, now has

13

the dilemma on which of his two Ferraris to place the plate!

He said: “Like all motoring enthusiasts I ’m a fan of Top Gear, ironically, though, my mum always says she can’t stand ‘that man’ Jer-emy Clarkson, but that won’t stop me going out and buying a white crash helmet.”

Damian Lawson, Marketing Manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations, said: “We had more than a dozen people chasing the THE 571G registration - and there we were thinking there was only one Stig but now we’re not so sure!”

The new British-designed, Chinese-built MGTF roadster, assembled at Longbridge from parts made in China, will be on sale in the UK next month. However, the car is already on sale in the People's Republic of China and the manufacturers are offer-ing some interesting advice for customers unfamiliar with sports cars’ idiosyncrasies on their website. "The gear on the chassis would suffer abnormal bumping when driv-ing out of gear as the engine capacity now is huge and the running speed is fast." - this is one of the clearer pieces of advice.

Chinese-born UK new-car website boss, Ling Valentine, (35) spotted the crazy on-line driving tips and has copied them onto her site in anticipation of the UK MG launch.Gems from the guidelines include; "Sensibly race the engine. Before starting your car in the early morning, especially before cold starting, it is necessary to warm up the car." Ling adds, "Put another way, pour a kettle of boiling water over your engine to warm it up." For those seeking driving thrills, new MG owners are tempted with the advice, "Some people like pulling the rotation speed to the red line edge when the first gear is ap-plied, and the powerful engine sound would satisfy them." Sadly there’s a catch; "..but the terminal acceleration quality is not the best here and sustainable acceleration could be achieved when shifting to a higher gear when the rotation rate reaches the peak value of the twisting force." Rally drivers use handbrake turns to control

speed and direction but this is not normally recom-mended on public roads in the UK. Chinese MG dis-agrees. "Make full use of the car and reduce unneces-sary braking. The drivers should pay attention to the road blocks and reduce the oil consumption by replac-ing braking with sliding, as one hard cut off and start will consume gasoline of about 35ml." Ling suggests that anyone who has experienced a Chinese taxi ride will appreciate the final piece of safety advice: "Braking is applied on many unnecessary occasions, which may cause quite a few problems…"

She adds ruefully, “Anyone who spots a new Chinese-manufactured, Longbridge-built MGTF in their rear view mirror would do well to give it a wide berth, as the driver may have read the handbook”.

Ling rents £40m worth of new cars a year at a fixed monthly cost for 2/3-years, from her dynamic website, LINGsCARS.com

The Mini’s growing... againThe latest M ini i s a l ready a bit pork y, but get this for st ra ining def in i t ion: a M ini SUV. Yup, i t ’s the wor ld ’s favour i te big-smal l car for 2010. Ok ay, so i t ’s a con-cept but we’re told i t ’s def in i te ly going in to produc t ion. I hope I ’m not the only one to think that i s a l i t t le bizarre? I love the M ini , I love the way i t handles and gr ips when you think you’re out of a l l poss ible t rac t ion, I love the way i t r ides hard and low but por t ing this into an SUV, i f only in name, sor t of ru ins i t . Or does i t?

One of the M ini ’s b iggest f laws, by i ts ver y nature, was the r id icu-lously smal l amount of space for, wel l , anything. Ever yone harps

Sure, i t might have the Clubman’s r id iculous suic ide doors and usual quirk y M ini innovat ions such as a centre ra i l on which you can at-tach “cupholders, s torage units and enter ta inment consoles”, but i t doesn’t seem to have lost that M ini -ness.

Trouble is , BMW have pitted i t in di rec t competit ion with their new X1. No problem for them, they win e i ther way. No problem for the customer e i ther – i t ’ l l be an X1, p lease. Sorr y M ini , s t ick to what you’re good at .

More than 1000 Subaru owners and thousands more fans have celebrated the life of Colin McRae this weekend.

A convoy, which at its peak stretched 30 miles with an estimated 1100 Subaru cars, left Colin’s home town of Lanark on Saturday morning, led by his father Jimmy McRae. Nine hours and 300 miles later, it arrived at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury, having been cheered along the way by thousands of fans who stood on every available motorway bridge on route.

“Literally every bridge had people

waving and cheering us along with many hanging the Saltire from the railings.” said Grant Hendry, who led the McRae Gathering convoy. “It turned what was an already memo-rable event into a truly amazing and emotional occasion.”

The convoy re-gathered at Pro-drive’s headquarters in Banbury on Sunday morning, before being led up the M40 by Colin McRae’s original 1996 Impreza rally car. In a fitting finale to the event, a sign almost half a mile long and made up of 1086 Subaru’s spelt out COLIN MCRAE and the Scottish Saltire in a new offi-cial Guinness World Record – smash-

ing the previous record by more than 800 cars. The cars then broke a second Guinness World Record by creating the largest parade of cars as they left the Prodrive test track.

The Life of Colin McRae, MBE born 5th August 1968 from Lanark, Scottish bread rally driver. With several years of successful rally driving, including win-ning the following titles : World Rally Championships Driver title, and Con-structors titles with both Subaru, Ford and Citroën. 1998 Saw the first ever Colin McRae 2.0 Rally game rerelease, which to date new versions are being released with the latest 2007 “Dirt” released on the PS3 September 14th,

the day before the tragic accident. 15th September 2007 - An AS350B2 Squir¬rel Helicopter belonging to Colin crashed 1 mile north of La-nark close to the McRae home. The tragic accident took the life’s of Colin McRae, his five year old son Johnny, and two of the families friends; Greame Duncan and John-ny’s six year old friend, Ben Por-celli. For years to come people will gather to remember such a great legend, a big thanks to Prodrive for helping organise the Gathering and to you the public for showing your support to the Legend, Colin McRae.....

The use of a SATA drive provides fast data transfers, and enables users to carry more data along with them than previously possible – making the Eee PC™ 904HD a convenient computing tool for everyone.

More-than-ample Viewing Area with 8.9 inch Display, 8.9” screen size for more viewing space. A 1024 x 600 resolution al-lows you to view a single A4 page without the need to scroll left or right for easier reading. Up to 5 hours of Battery Life, ASUS exclusive Super Hybrid Engine for longer battery lifespan of up to 5 hours. Large Internal Hard Disk Storage, 80GB SATA hard disk for the most storage space available in the Eee PC™ range. High Speed Connectivity Anywhere with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. Great overall device.

Not as much of a gadget review, but an item we got send into the TarMag of-fice, a Canvas print thanks to the guys at www.RicksPrintshop.co.uk

We received these within 2 days of speaking to the company, and i must admit, the quality is fantastic. Prices are reasonable, and all you have to do it provide them with the image/picture, whether it be of a loved one, friends, family, or scenic picture, motoring, etc.... I’m sure you get my drift.

Instead of just getting a picture printed, and then framed, a canvas brings the picture, and your room alive!

When the online TarMag shop opens, we hope to be able to sell Canvas prints of pictures that have featured within the magazine. In the mean time if we can be of any assistance please contact [email protected]

Every now and then a car comes along which changes people’s perceptions, shapes the industry and moves everything on to the next level - could the VIBE R8 be such a car?

Let’s get the obvious out the way - it is a stunningly beautiful creation. The Audi design-ers have worked their magic and penned what must be the most awesomely styled car to come to ever roll off the production line. There are not enough superlatives to describe its swooping rear end, aggressive front and those headlights - if you see them coming up behind you on the motorway you know fine well that you should be getting your ass into that inside lane and out of the way. It just oozes style, class and menace.

With those points in mind you can see why it was the choice of VIBE as their new flagship demonstration vehicle for 2008 - especially when its job is to showcase their premier range of speakers.

Most people would think twice about ripping a brand new supercar to bits but upon de-livery it was swiftly rolled into the VIBE workshop where the special projects team set about creating a masterpiece which was fit for the vehicle. With room very much limited a very simple install was selected - a set of components in the front doors, a single sub-woofer, some speakers for rear fill and then two amplifiers to power it all were all that could be squeezed in.

The VIBE R8 won BEST DEMO CAR at CAR EXPO show 2008. Taking its first show by storm by coming away with the the ‘Car of the Show’ trophy. The Judges were blown away with the stunning sleek design and sound of this prestigious Super Car.

With all of the best of the UK’s audio demo cars on display it’s a great honour to take this award.

Page 74: TarMag - October

Back in 2003 was when I first fell in love with these types of car, my first four wheel drive was a Subaru Sport which I will admit was rather slow and sluggish but gave me a great starting point in the way of driving four wheel drive systems, then moved up to a WRX which I modified greatly and was my pride and joy, until I blew up the bot-tom end of the engine, this was when I thought to myself maybe it is time to change breeds as everyone kept tell-ing me the Evo’s were the better car in many ways. My mate had one at the time who kept telling me once you drive a Evo you will never go back to Subaru again, so that weekend I looked into the Mitsubishi garage, asked for test drive of an Evo whereby the Sales-man handed me the keys of a 8 fq 260.

Astounded by the difference between

74

Subaru and Mitsubishi knowing there was three other models above the 260 just blew me away. My mind was changed that day and the following week I ordered a new Evo 8 mr fq300. Over the seventeen months I owned this car I carried out various modifications which upgraded the looks, power, han-dling etc., I started taking my car to shows and was taken aback by the at-tention the car was getting. Must admit it was addictive and started spending more and more time going to car shows and picking up trophies, all the work and long hours in polishing and waxing was being rewarded. Time had come to part with this car and traded it in for the Evo I now have, the 9 fq360. The car came standard from Mitsubishi and over the past two and half years have modified and spent a lot of money

making the car eye catching and differ-ent. I try and not use the car over the winter months and at this time when the car is off the road is when I do the most modifying, cleaning and building up wax coats for the upcoming shows in the new year. Over the past few years I have entered the 9 into lots of shows all over Scotland and have been lucky enough to walk away at most of these shows with Car of the Show or Best Exterior up against stiff competition especially the ones at Knockhill because there are a bigger turnout of cars. It gives me a great sense of achievement knowing I have travelled 200 miles and winning Best of Show or Best Show shine after the hours I put into the car, preparing for shows makes it all worthwhile. People always say “ when are you going to stop cleaning and buffing up the car

is minted” and I know the car is but being an enthusiast the car is never finished because I see it as a hobby and work in progress not only with the standard the car is now at being clean and mark free but by the sub-tle modifications and little touches makes all the difference, still have lots in mind I want to do to the mo-tor, but takes time and money. Want to keep this car as long as I can be-cause of the time I have spent on it and what it means to me, because every time you jump into these cars whatever mood you are in you always come out of the car after driving with a smile on your face, you forget the running costs. Hope to do a few more shows by the end of the year if you see the car come up to me and have a chat.

In a globalised world, noth-ing is more important than British companies extend ing their potential and nothing exemplifies this better than our heritage and history. British indus-try has a great deal to be proud of and it is right that we celebrate it.

A Kahn Design is committed to fostering and developing British brands and recogniz-ing the truly remarkable achievements of the past. Cosworth, a globally rec-ognised British brand, has employed its legendary knowledge of engineering, to tune the engine of the landmark Kahn Cosworth Sport 300.Kahn News.com is delighted to officially unveil an-

nounce the landmark Kahn Cosworth 300 to the world after months of consulta-tion and development. The dream of owning an uncompromisingly designed 4x4 created by the UK’s most avant-garde designer is now a reality.Afzal Kahn said “This is tak-ing the luxury 4x4 market to the next stage. “The UK has been out of the lime-light from the world’s mo-toring industry for too long, we are aiming to put it back on the map with this innovative new creation. Our select consumers will be delighted to own dis-tinctively styled cars with Cosworth tuned engines; they will also enjoy a great deal of motor supremacy.“We have developed a num-

ber of prototypes and sent teasers out in the press over the past few months in order to measure reaction and we promptly compiled all the relevant data. “We have taken heed of what our customers and media pundits have made of the prototype and I believe that we have an-swered with vigour.”

As the UK’s leading automo-tive design house, Project Kahn recognises the impor-tance of dynamic cutting edge designs whilst staying true to the original form.

Kahn Cosworth Sport own-ers will certainly testify to the exuberance of passion and sumptuous beauty of Afzal Kahn’s designs.

SouthCentralCruisers.co.uk was first created in 2004. There were no websites dedicated to Car & Bike enthusiasts in the South, all the sites we used to know and love had closed down and we decided that something need-ed to be done about it. Some friends got together and thought of a name, after a few hours we came up with SouthCentralCruis-ers it was catchy and did exactly what it said. In 2004 the scene was very different, the cruises were more friendly and the police were alot more helpful and were interested in working alongside Modified Car owners. When we created SCC it was purely to help car enthusiasts and give us all somewhere to chat online, we organised many

succsesful meets and events. We never set out to he be the biggest or the best site on the internet we just all wanted a place to chat, share ideas and get help from other Car Enthusi-asts.

The original admin grew out of SCC and decided to move on and gradually other staff members followed which led to SCC go-ing threw a quiet period in 2006 - Members all worked hard to keep the site going so two mem-bers took the site on and did the best they could to keep things alive and kicking. Bigger events had been organised and SCC suddenly became a well known name in Berkshire & Oxfordshire especially. Unfortunatly just

when we all thought it was back on track the forum and domain started to have problems and as it was all in the original admin's name we couldnt get in touch with the right people to sort everything out, which then led to us buying www.SouthCentral-Cruisers.com and having to set up a new forum loosing all of our members.

In may 2007 the new forum had been set up - luckily we had sup-port of great members who all registered with SCC again and helped get things back on track. We had aload of SCC Stickers made up which we gave out to people with modified cars, We also had some home made fly-ers knocked up so we could flyer

cars we saw and leave them in shops and places "cruisers" may go. Within the first month we had managed to get a good few hundred members and hold some great events including an Open Day alongside an SCC TRADER Banshee Motorsport. We have hit the shows hard in 2008 so that our members always have something to do and can always get involved with activities, This year we have attended : The Fast Show, Modified Nationals, Burnin Bmth, Low & Loud, Devon Perfor-mance & Modified, Auto Tuner & Trax

Auto Tuner was a good show for SCC we managed to win first place in The Best Car Club Cham-pions 2008 which was judged by Max Power - We won £1,500 & A Trophy. Our first trophy in 4 years, we have never gone to shows with the intention to win but the intention to have a wicked time. Were pleased that our hard work has been noticed, its a nice bonus and a pleasure to carry such a title.

SCC is working alongside Mac-Millan Cancer to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support, at Low & Loud 2008 some of the male members were crazy enough to get waxed for charity, we also hold Member Raffles at shows to raise some extra money for the charity. We have also set up an online donation page if anyone wishes to donate to the cause. www.justgiving.co.uk/sc-cwaxoff

SCC is a really friendly forum that will welcome anyone with an interest in Cars or Bikes and even though the name states South Central we now cover South East & South West so dont be put off by the name. If your looking for a helpful & friendly forum to be part of then please just check us out. We dont have a flashy web-site with lots of useless informa-tion, we just have a user friendly forum with seperate sections making it easy to navigate.

In 2008 SCC has been going threw some tough times again, mem-

bers deciding to leave and create their own forums and then being kicked off the server we were being hosted on. Luckily with the support of a good staff team and amazing members we have got threw all the rubbish that has come our way in the last 4 years, we are yet to be defeated. The "cruise scene" has began to get Childish & Bitchy what with people trying to make everything a competition, the police have got rather heavy handed on any-one with a modified car and they can now inforce dispersol area's meaning its technically illegal for more than 3 people to meet up in the same place at the same time. SCC is trying to get things back to the way they should be not by going old skool but by looking at doing things a new way to im-prove it for everyone, we try to work with landowners as police and much as we can to save the drama. The scene will never be what it was, so we all have to focus on making it the best it can be!
