Letter from the RectoryDear Friends,As I write, we are just about to embark on Holy Week. I am so thankful to allthe many people who are helping with the preparations and hospitality forfriends who will join us from across the diocese for Bishop Philip’s ChrismEucharist. Holy Week should always be the very heart of the Christian year -indeed the Christian life - because it invites us and enables us to enter into themystery of Christ's saving death and resurrection. Everything we celebrate ordo as a Church should spring from the Cross and the empty tomb. Sometimesit can seem as though we'd rather sideline this challenging message. We don'talways embrace it. We see distractions in our own lives and in the life of theChurch which draw us away from being the people God wills us to be. Theconstant call from God is that we should turn to him and trust in his mercy andlove. The Easter Anthem, an ancient hymn of praise, sums up the Easter Gospelmessage in words which will forever remain true.Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us: so let us celebrate the feast, not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ once raised from the dead dies no more: death has no more dominion over him. In dying he died to sin once for all: in living he lives to God. See yourselves therefore as dead to sin: and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ has been raised from the dead: the firstfruits of those who sleep. For as by man came death: by man has come also the resurrection of the dead; for as in Adam all die: even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Have a joyful Eastertide, with love and prayers, Fr Nicholas

THANK YOUOn behalf of The Children's Society I would like to say thank you to everyonewho donated so generously. The final total this year is £1238.64. FromVictoria Rimmer

Hello, my name is Emma Biltcliffe,

I have been asked to represent TarletonHoly Trinity as Rosequeen for 2016.

After being in the retinue four times, Ican’t wait to be crowned in June and take over from Isobelle. At themoment, I am busy planning the coffee evening with my mum and wehave started to talk about dress colours, but that’s a big secret for now!

I have been going to church and Sunday school since I was tiny. I enjoymaking things there like palms, Easter gifts, Mother’s day gifts anddecorating the float for walking day with pictures that we do. We learnsongs and sing them on Rosequeen day and dress up at Christmas andtake part in the nativity at Christingle.

In the past, I enjoyed stories told by Jean, I have nice memories of herand that is why I have chosen to donate all funds raised during myreign, to the Motor neurone charity.

I hope to make Sunday school and Tarleton Holy Trinity church proudby being the best Rose Queen that I can.

Please tell your friends about Sunday Club and come and join us! Emma

An Address to General Synod by Bishop Philip

‘A Christian presence in every community,’ boasts the Church of England’swebsite. Whenever I see that, I think of places like Brambles Farm orMereside or Grange Park where the Church has closed down and the clergyhave been withdrawn. Because it’s not true. The Church is not present in everycommunity, and the places where we are least present are the poorest – theouter estates of our towns and cities.

Over the past 5 years attendance in Church of England churches has droppedby 3.4%. On the outer estates the decline figure is double that at 7.5%.Nationally 1.7% of the population attend an Anglican Church. On the estatesthe figure is less than half that at 0.8%. You might think that a church with abias to the poor would be investing in the estates. Not so. We spend £7.87 onministry per head of population nationally. That rises to £23.88 in rural areas. On the estates that figure is just £5.07.

That’s the statistics. What about the anecdotal evidence? We know that all toowell. Clergy, some of them on the estates because that is the only job theycould get, who feel isolated, lonely and forgotten. PCCs who feel a constantsense of guilt because the rest of the Church is telling them how heavily theyare subsidised. Buildings that are cold, leaky and unfit for purpose. Massivechallenges in developing consistent patterns of lay leadership. Evangelisticresources which simply don’t work in the urban context where educationalexpectations and patterns of family life are so different. The Church on ourouter estates is dying and dying very quickly. The conclusion is an obviousone. We are all leaders of a Church that has taken a preferential option for therich.

So why does this matter? Why should this be such a high priority for theArchbishops’ Evangelism Task Group? Because almost every single effectiverenewal movement in the history of the Church has started with the poor.Look at who Jesus chose as disciples. Look at Francis or Vincent de Paul orWesley or the Oxford Movement. Integral to their proclamation was Luke 4.18 where Jesus announces that ‘the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he

Page 8: Tarleton Rufford Parish - Holy Trinity Church Tarletonholytrinitychurchtarleton.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/mag-April... · Tarleton Rufford Parish Magazine ... Parish Magazine

has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.’ Unless we are a poorchurch for the poor, our mission will come to nothing. In a spreadsheet worldthere will always be those who say we need to close struggling Churcheswhich are unviable and focus our attention on the hotspots. But that would benothing less than a betrayal of the Gospel. A church that abandons the poorhas abandoned God and loses the authority to proclaim. The Church on theestates may arguably be receiving a financial subsidy from the rich, but thespiritual subsidy goes in the opposite direction.

So what can we do? I started with stories of doom and gloom. But there isanother side to that story which is that there is some ministry happening onmany of our estates which is nothing short of heroic. Some churches arereviving, some are planting, many are offering outstanding service to their

communities. The Diocese of Blackburn has just re-invested massively in theMereside Estate which I mentioned at the start. In some places the Church isthe only vibrant community facility left.

On March 1st we are gathering together a group of estates practitioners atBishopthorpe Palace to confront head on the issues that the Church on theouter estates faces. We will seek to challenge the wider Church and ask if it isprepared to pay the price of commitment to the nation’s poorest. We will learnfrom the examples of estates Churches which are growing. We will thinkabout ways of attracting the best leaders to the estates and reflect on whatresources they will need to flourish. We will seek to nail once and for all thefalse dichotomy between evangelism and community engagement, becauseyou can’t have one without the other. We need a bigger Church to make abigger difference.

The battle for the Christian soul of thisnation will not be won and lost inKensington or Cobham or Harrogate. It isout on the estates, where life is hard, andwhere church life is failing fast, that ourability to capture imaginations with thesaving news of Jesus Christ will serve as thelitmus test. That is why we are prioritisingevangelism on the estates, and why we hopethat the wider Church will hear the appealwe make. +Philip

How can I tell you my name?I who have seen my fellow man in his deepest shame.I who can tell of his obscenities. For I have seen him in the nightcome to murder and destroyall that was precious in my sight, all that gave my family joy.

And why? What did we do?We did not rise up against their rule;we only spoke of what was trueand would not countenance the cruel. But when corruption wears the crownthen those who dare to say, 'This is notright’become a danger to be put down.

So Christians vanish in the night, for evil cannot face the day,nor wickedness be seen for what it does.We all lived in fear and some chose toobeythe orders that deprave the soul.We cried for justice, but their violationof our lives is unseen by the law,for it must serve the rulers of the nationand all that we have seen it never saw.No one from my old school now lives athomeand only ten from eighty-two surviveas rootless nationless we roam, thankful to God that we were kept alive.Yet guilty too, and sleepless stillfor our eyes always scour the nightbecause we are witnesses they failed to kill, our tongues can speak, our eyes have sight. So I live here, a refugee, not from a famine, war nor flood,But for my faith, my Christianity, for doing what I knew was good.Even so I fight my human nature, holding to grace and life as it should be,and stifling the angry vengeful creaturethat roars within the very heart of me.

Only by the power of faith in a crucified and tortured Lordcan I share in the love that conquers deathand understand how hope springs from his blood.Such is the gift of loveThat presidents must tremble, evil be confusedfor life does rise and rise gain to provethat truth and hope survive however badly used.

Mary in the garden

I met Him in the darknessOf the early morn

The quiet expectant darknessThat comes before the dawn. But night to me was endless.

The sun would never riseAnd I did not recognise Him

When He stood before my eyes.

I asked, ‘Who are you, my master?’

He said, simply, ‘I am life.’I am the Life that has died.

I am the Love that was slain. The light that was crucified.

I died and I rose againFor the Light can never be conquered.
