    Chapter-4: Fear of Allah & AbstinencePart-16 1 | P a g e

    )

The Prophet said, "Amongst the people preceding your age,

there was a man whom Allah had given a lot of money. While

he was in his death-bed, he called his sons and said, 'What

type of father have I been to you? They replied, 'You have

been a good father.' He said, 'I have never done a single good

deed; so when I die, burn me, crush my body, and scatter the

resulting ashes on a windy day. 'His sons did accordingly, but

Allah gathered his particles and asked (him), 'What made you

do so? 'He replied, "Fear of you.' So Allah bestowed His Mercy

    upon him (forgave him)."

Narrated by: Abu Saeed (r.a)Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

Explanation: From this hadith we come to know that man

should always be fearful of being accounted by Allah. Those

who endeavor to fulfill the demands of faith and shiver out of

fear of presenting themselves in the court of Allah will

definitely not be deprived of pardon and Mercy from Allah.

128.This world - ponder over it for a minute

    (-)

The Prophet said, "If you knew that which I know, you would

    laugh little and weep much."

Narrated by: Anas (r.a) Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari.

Explanation: The human eye cannot perceive the reality of

reward and punishment for the deeds committed by man,

nor does it know the severity of death, nor does it know the

conditions that will be faced in the grave and the hardships

that will have to be faced on the Day of Judgment. Prophet

(p.b.u.h) mentioned that I know all of these things very well

but you do not. If you knew it as well as I do, you would laugh

only a little and cry a lot.

This is a clear fact that if we were to witness the punishment

for the disobedience to Allah and other sins our faces would

be saddened by grief. How can man laugh when the fear ofthe frightening future is ahead of him? The one in fear will be

    shedding tears all the time.

When Omar (r.a) was stabbed, a young man from ansar came

and said, "O chief of the believers! Be happy with Allah'sglad

tidings. The grade which you have in Islam is known to you,

then you became the caliph and you ruled with justice and

then you have been awarded martyrdom after all this." 'Umarreplied,

"O son of my brother! Would that, all that privileges

will counterbalance (my short comings), so that

    I neither lose

    nor gain

    anything.

Narrated by: Umro bin Maimoon (r.a)

    Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari

Explanation: On the 26th of Zil Hijja, 23 Hijri, Mughaira bin

Shaibas slave Feroze stabbed Caliph Umar (r.a) with a

poisonous knife. There was severe blood loss for 3 to 4 days.

He could never recover from this. In this period, Ibn Abbas

and an Ansari companion flowered praises on the great

works done by him. In response to the appreciation, the

great caliph who was extremely concerned about

accountability in the Hereafter mentioned only this; I only

wish that my good deeds balance my bad deeds.

130.Aisha (r.a) and fear of God

Narrated Ibn Abbas (r.a), thatAisha (r.a) said, O Ibn Abbas!

Leave alone (all my services), I swear upon that God in whose

possession is my life, I prefer that I am completelyforgotten.

Narrated by: Ibn Abbas (r.a) Recorded in: Musnad Ahmad

Explanation: The favourite wife of the prophet (p.b.u.h) was

trembling out of fear of the accountability in the hereafter. A

few hours before she passed away, Abdulla ibn Abbas (r.a)

was telling and appreciating her status in and services to

Islam. Hearing this she replied; what are you telling, mybiggest desire is that I be forgotten completely and there be

no mention of me anywhere because I am extremely afraid

of presenting myself for accountability in the court of Allah.

    Chapter-4: Fear of Allah & AbstinencePart-16 5 | P a g e

Narrated Abu Dhar (r.a) that Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, You do

not see all that I see and you do not listen to all that I can

listen. (Due to the angels) the whole skies are echoing and it

has to echo. There is not even a small space in the heavens

where the angles are not in prostration to Allah. By Allah! If

you knew what I know you would laugh little and cry a lot,

you shall not enjoy with your wives in the beds rather you

shall come out to the open and pray to Allah with all

earnestness and eagerness. After listening to prophet

    (p.b.u.h) Abu Dhar (r.a.) mentioned, I prefer that (I was not a

human being at all rather) I was a tree which has been

    uprooted and cut off.

Narrated by: Abu Dhar (r.a) Recorded in: Tirmidhi.

Explanation:The skies are echoingcould mean that theyare echoing and reverberating the praises and words of Allah.

Every creation that has been bestowed with the faculty of

intellect and freewill will be accounted for the deeds

committed in their complete lifetime in the grand court of

Allah on the Day of Judgment. Upon realizing the seriousness

of accountability, Abu Dhar (r.a) was so worried that hepreferred that he were a tree rather than be a human being.

He mentioned; if I were a tree I would have been relieved of

accountability, but since I am a human being I will have to

present myself to be accounted in the court of Allah a

    situation extremely tough to face.

132.The reality of sins in the sight of the companions

    -

Narrated Anas (r.a), you do such deeds which you consider as

very mean and negligible, whereas during the time of the

prophet (p.b.u.h) we considered such deeds to be destructive

    to us.

Narrated by: Anas (r.a) Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari

Explanation: In the training of the companions, prophet

(p.b.u.h had regarded Taqwa so important that even themisdeeds which we consider as very insignificant these days

were regarded very big and major. They considered thinking

of committing small misdeeds also as destructive. They also

used to try very hard to refrain from major sins as well. This

feeling can develop only when the fear of Allah in man

supersedes everything else. One should remember thatpersisting in doing small sins ultimately leads to major sins.

    Chapter-4: Fear of Allah & AbstinencePart-16 7 | P a g e

    :-

    :

Abu Burda (r.a) narrated, one day Abdulla ibn Umar (r.a)

asked me, do you know what my father (Umar) told your

father (Abu Moosa Ashari). I replied, No. He mentioned

Abu Moosa! Are you happy and proud that after the comingof the prophet (p.b.u.h) we had accepted Islam, and also done

so many good deeds in addition to fighting and migrating in

the cause of Allah. May these deeds be rewarding for us and

may our deeds (good and bad) that we have done after the

lifetime of the prophet (p.b.u.h) get balanced. (That we

neither get rewarded nor get punished).

Upon this your father said, By Allah! After the lifetime of

Prophet (p.b.u.h) we have fought in the cause of Allah,

offered prayers, fasted and done several good deeds. So

many people have accepted Islam through our efforts and we

expect reward from Allah for all these deeds. My father

(Umar) replied, By Allah! In whose hands my life is, I prefer

that the deeds performed during the life time of the prophet

(p.b.u.h) itself be accepted and as for the deeds done after his

life time I hope that we are not accounted and our good and

    bad deeds balance each other.

The narrator of this hadith (Abu Burda) mentioned that he

said, your father was definitely better than my father.

Narrated by: Abu Burda (r.a) Recorded in: Mishkath.

Explanation: Try to understand the care and God fearingnature of Umar (r.a), he did not trust the good deeds he had

performed; never counted the reward for his good deeds

rather he desired to be saved from the misdeeds committed,

whereas we know that his period is regarded as an example

and baseline of the Islamic period. Moreover prophet

(p.b.u.h) had given him the good news of paradise. Our

condition today is such that, by just remembering Allah,

praising Allah and by being blessed to offer some meager

service to Islam we have regarded ourselves as rightful

    ownersof paradise.

    Chapter-4: Fear of Allah & AbstinencePart-16 9 | P a g e

Narrated Abdulla ibn Masood (r.a), a believer considers his

sins a burden as huge as a mountain; as though he is sitting

below a mountain which is about to fall over him but a Fajir

considers a sin committed as though it is a fly passing over his

nose and he (p.b.u.h) showed it with his hand.

Narrated by: Abdulla bin Masood (r.a)

    Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari, Tirmidhi.

Explanation: A believer is not one who is innocent, he doescommit sins but he neither prides on it nor does he persist in

it. If Allahs slave commits sins due to human limitations and

factors, he considers it a very heavy burden upon him as

though he is being crushed by a huge mountain. He trembles

with fear of being accounted for his misdeeds in Allahs court.

His eyes shed tears, he prostrates to the Merciful in shameand in repentance seeking forgiveness humbly and with

humility he prays saying, The Only Merciful One Who

forgives! Forgive me this time; I shall not be disobedient to

    you ever again.

Fajir is that person who in practice has resorted to

disobedience and transgression openly, who does not care

for the consequences in the Hereafter of his mistakes and

misdeeds, and goes on committing all sorts of sins. The

maximum concern he has towards his disobedient life is like a

fly passing over his nose or sitting on his nose and then flying

away as though nothing has happened. He does not realize

that after death he shall have to accept the punishment that

shall be decreed by Allah for the sins committed and taste

the punishment of hell for his disobedience and

    transgression.

    135. Salvation from Hell

    (

    )

Abu Huraira (r.a) narrated, Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, A man

who weeps from fear of Allah will not go to Hell till the milk

returns to the udder. And dust in Allahs path and smoke of

Hell will never come together (on anyone).

Narrated by: Abu Huraira(r.a) Recorded in: Tirmidhi

Explanation: The one who fears Allah is deeply involved in

obedience to Him and refrains from His disobedience. He

sheds tears in fear of accountability in Allahs court, the entry

of such a person into hell is impossible just as sending milk

back into the udder is impossible. The one who is striving inthe establishment of Allahs religion and is facing several

trials and hardships in this cause has a high stature in the

eyes of Allah. The grief and pain he faces in this struggle does

not go in vain, so much so that even the dust that gathers on

him will prevent him from going to hell. Blessed is he who

    in this world.

    136.

Who is the most honoured one

    ()

Prophet (p.b.u.h) was asked: who is the most respected

person? He (p.b.u.h) replied the one who is most righteous

    and God fearing

Narrated by: Abu Huraira(r.a) Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari

Explanation: The person regarded as dignified and

esteemed in this world is he who has hoards of worldly

wealth and treasures even though he might be atrocious,

shameless, a liar, not trust worthy and be a thief.

On the other hand in an Islamic societyonly that person is

regarded as worthy of respect and honour, who saves himself

from wrong, who fears Allah in all matters, and measures

each step he takes, though he may lead a life of an ordinarylabourer or farmer.

    13/13

    Chapter-4: Fear of Allah & AbstinencePart-16 12 | P a g e

Narrated Abdulla ibn Umar (r.a), Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, Man

cannot attain righteousness unless he leaves all that which

    instigates his heart.

Explanation: God consciousness refers to that word or those

deeds which when said or done prick mans conscious and

make him refrain from it. This is in reality abstinence. Some

people have assumed that God consciousness is adopting a

particular way of appearance and way of life, a different way

of dressing like a beggar, which shows that man has

become God conscious but in reality God consciousness is

that in all matters of life man protects himself (his clothes)

from the thorny bushes he has to pass by. Beware at every

step so that the thorn of disobedience of Allah does not prick

and hurt his pure and clean soul.
