The Course

This a one day course that starts at 9:00 and ends at 18:00 (including two tea

breaks and one lunch break) by summarising the basic concepts of gravity and

magnetic data, then focus on recent developments and their practical usage

in regional, basin-wide and prospect scale hydrocarbon exploration.

The course gradually progresses to recent advances in technology include new enhancement and visualisation techniques, then review and discuss the various choices in processing and interpretation methods and parameters that have to be made in different geological environments and for different objectives.

The practical section of the course will be a series of interactive seminars and computer-based demonstrations and afternoon PC-based exercises to introduce delegates to gravity data reduction and image processing using Oasis-Montaj software, and NGA’s GM-SYSTM 2D modelling software. The practical exercises will be addressing: What’s new and what can we achieve with gravity and magnetic data. The

role of gravity and magnetic data in oil exploration. Basic and advanced image processing techniques used to enhance

potential field data. Magnetic depth estimation techniques. 2-D modelling in quantitative interpretation Integration with geological and

seismic data Case study for North Africa. Undertake a multi-disciplined interpretation.

Expected Outcomes

The participants in this course should develop:

An understanding of the importance of gravity and magnetics geophysics in the oil

exploration industry.

• An understanding of the benefits and limitations of gravity and magnetic data

interpretations.

• An understanding of what advanced processing techniques will be most valuable in

different environments

The ability to describe and illustrate the use of gravity and magnetic surveys in the

different stages of basin-wide exploration.

The Instructor: Giuma Reeh, PhD

Dr. Reeh prepared his PhD at the

University of Birmingham under the

supervision of Professor Tim Reston on

“seismicity, gravity and magnetics of the

Structural and Tectonic Evolutions of

Sabratah Basin, Offshore NW Libya”, in

which he investigated crustal structure,

subsidence history and structural evolution

of the Sabratah Basin. He did his MSc by research at Bristol University on the gravity

and magnetics of the igneous intrusions in North Africa and Offshore Libya under the

supervision of the late Dr Phil Kearey.

Dr Reeh has a long service and experience of the geology and geophysics of Libya,

with remarkable skills in:

2D / 3D Seismic Interpretation experience for more than 8 years using Kingdom

Software.

Well-tie analysis, depth conversion, and well log correlation.

Salt tectonic structure evolution and dynamic structural restoration of salt diapirs using

different level of software, i.e. LithoTect, Move for 2D and 3D Kinematic Modelling.

Gravity and Magnetic data acquisition, processing and interpretation for more than 20

years.

Using Oasis-Montaj software in processing and interpreting Gravity and Magnetic data.

Who should attend this course? This course is suitable for Petroleum Explorationists wishing to develop a

greater understanding and practical knowledge of gravity and magnetic

acquisition, processing and interpretation methods. Explorationists with some

practical knowledge will find the course a means of updating their knowledge on

current trends.
