Principal’s MessageThe uniting vision of staff at Taradale High School is to lead young people on the path to reaching their potential. This prospectus signals how we achieve that goal.

The journey starts in the classroom, but our sights are set on destinations beyond secondary school. In all activities, we promote the values of respect, integrity, endeavour, intellectual curiosity and citizenship. We provide every opportunity for students to develop the resilience, principles, and skills which will equip them for the path they will tread through the 21st Century.

We believe in success for all students, getting them off to a solid start in the early years with the Junior Diploma, which compares progress with each student’s individual capacity to learn, providing a strong motivation for students to succeed. Our curriculum broadens out to a wide range of options in the senior school, assisting students to prepare for the full gamut of occupa-tions and further education.

We are careful to cater for students of all academic levels, challenging students at their level of ability. Our Accelerated Pathway, which includes full NCEA courses at Year 10 (Form 4) and The Cambridge International Examination at Year 11 (Form 5) is for our most able students. It reflects our commitment to ensuring that talented students are challenged at the appropriate level. Our Home Rooms in Years 9 & 10 (Forms 3 & 4) are for students who have the greatest needs in numeracy and literacy. They provide a fast track to success. For junior students at all levels of ability, there is the flexibility in our timetable to cater for their specialities and needs.

Because we are conscious of the need to provide a safe physical and emotional environment for all students, we have a network of pastoral care systems and a proud reputation of building strong and supportive relationships between students and staff. The quality of our students’ performance in a wide range of extra-curricular activities continues to be outstanding, underpinned by strong community support. We regularly hold several Hawke’s Bay titles in a range of sports, we have New Zealand champions in our ranks, and our school shows, musicals and dramas are simply superb.

Taradale High School is the school of choice for students from the local community. In recent years we have been unable to accept all applications from students living out of the school zone. I invite you to attend our open evening on Thursday August 26th at 6.45 p.m. and to submit an application for enrolment by Wednesday 8th September to avoid disappointment.

Education Outside the ClassroomIt is not possible to educate the whole person while constraining them within the confines of a classroom, so at Taradale High School we provide camps for students in Year 10 to be challenged in outdoor environments. We aim to provide the sorts of opportunities it is often difficult for parents to provide, so camps can take place anywhere from Great Barrier Island in the north, to Abel Tasman Park in the south. Activities to choose from include cycling tours to caving, kayaking adventures and tramping.

Other recent opportunities include the 2010 trip to Japan (above), the Hillary Challenge, the Get2Go Challenge (HB winners in 2009), Outdoor Education module in Year 12 and the Leadership Camp for selected students.

Accelerated PathwayOur Accelerated Pathway caters for students who are academically talented. It consists of:

• Selection for one of our three top band classes in Year 9 (Form 3). • Full NCEA courses at Year 10 (Form 4). • The Cambridge International Examination in selected subjects at Year 11 (Form 5) as well as the possibility of NCEA Level 2, where appropriate. • NCEA Level 3 in some subjects in Year 12 (Form 6). • Scholarship classes and University courses, where appropriate in Year 13 (Form 7).

The Goals of our Accelerated Pathway: • To identify & provide specifically for gifted and talented pupils. • To foster maturity at Year 10. • To achieve at NCEA Level 1 in Year 10, including subject endorsement. • To develop depth and breadth in Year 11 by studying towards Cambridge IGCSE Examinations. • To create opportunities for extra subject choices in Year 12, potentially studying one or two Level 2 subjects in Year 11 and one or two Level 3 subjects in Year 12.

Flexible BandingOur timetable has been designed with the flexibility to cater for students who have strengths or challenges in particular subjects. Whilst most compulsory courses (English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Physical Education) are learnt in a core group of students with similar abilities, we are able to move students out of that group and into another if their needs are different to their usual classmates.

Home RoomsSome pupils arrive at secondary school with low numeracy and literacy skills (maths, reading, writing). We teach them in our “Home Rooms” where our goal is to improve their numeracy and literacy skills by two year levels in one. This has been a highly successful programme, with students succeeding academically, socially and behaviourally.

Specialised Pathways

4

Page 7: Taradale High School

Taradale High School provides pathways into the future for individual students. The Careers Team specialises in developing personalised career plans into:

• Universities

• Polytechnics

• Trade Training

Work-place training is available for senior students in Employment and Gateway.

We focus on catering for all levels of ability. For the most academically gifted students, we of-fer acceleration within their existing classes or promotion to higher year groups in selected subjects. Our scholarship results at Year 13 continue to be favourable.

NCEA is a realistic achievement for most students, whether gaining it with Achievement Standards in conventional subjects, or with Unit Standards in a range of vocational subjects, or with a combination of both.

We encourage our students to aim for endorsement of NCEA with Merit or Excellence.
