THE TUMMY TATTLER RESTAURANT REVIEWEl Meze

1017 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, El Prado, 575-751-3337 Open for Dinner Monday thru Saturday

A Restaurant with CharacterAmbiance - Located in El Prado, in the Torreon Haci-enda built in 1847, El Meze shares a wonderful mountain view on its patio during the warm weather months, and a charming historic old world dining experience in doors. Seating is either cozy or a bit tight depending on your mood, and the decor is distinctive.

Service - I’ve had the pleasure of dining at El Meze on numerous occasions, some extremely busy nights and others not so much, and I must applaud the owners for providing friendly and prompt service each time - no easy feat. I do suggest making reservations, especially during the tourist season.

Food Quality - Food is a pleasant mix described as “regionally inspired rustic New Mexican, Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine with a creative twist.” Not sure I understand what that means but I would translate it as “tasty.” When ever possible Chef Fred likes to source local products and feature them as specials. One late summer dish was an inspired Bread Salad with local tomatoes. I’d rate it as one of my most favorite dishes of the year. The Fried Green Olives seem to be ever present on the menu and a delightful flavor bite to have with a glass of wine to start your meal. The dishes that keep me coming back to El Meze are the Buffalo Short Ribs and the Buffalo Tamale. Always outstanding and prepared in the chef’s unique style. Fresh made pasta is on the menu, which elevates El Meze above most restaurants in the area. For dessert I would highly recommend the whimsi-cal Crème Brulee. If I had one complaint, it would be that the menu is too small. A greater selection would have me coming back more frequently.

Value - When El Meze first opened it was a bit pricey and a toss up whether or not it was worth the money. Since then it has settled into a comfortable little niche with very reasonable prices and food that is actually better than what you pay for. It’s a chef driven restaurant and the dedication to the food is apparent. And the score is . . .

Taos is such a neat place and at one time was very tranquil. However, today it is besieged by POOR DRIVERS with POOR HABITS.Things that bug me include:Drivers who tailgate...particularly big trucks.Drivers who honk as they use the shoulder to pass on the right side as I am trying to turn left.Drivers who honk when I am stopped in the right lane at a traffic signal even though I am going straight…Not turning right. How about enacting some type of a “Crime Stoppers” phone number where we could report offensive driving habits which may or may not be illegal but are certainly safety concerns. Perhaps with a description of the car, the time of day along with the driver’s license plate.Or maybe, if we emailed them to the Taos Trade-N-Post, they would print them. The other day as I was taking a right turn, a lady hit the back of my car and as I motioned for her to pull over to the right, she passed me on the left side and sped away.Initially, I was shocked and didn’t know what to do in my bewilderment.I then did a rather high speed chase to follow her. She stopped at where her Mother worked and was talking to her.She knew I was there but ignored me. Loud knocking on her window got her attention and I motioned for her to roll down the window. She actually denied that she had hit me...Her Mother said something about “today’s kids!”Tailgating and speeding cause a LOT of accidents in Taos. The other day I saw three cars piled up because of these factors.Let’s ALL slow down and stay away from the car in front of us. Driving can be enjoyable. People in Taos have NO reason to drive like a Chicago Taxi Cab driver! Neither do they have the skills to do so!

Printing EcologyWe are committed to being good stewards of the environment by promoting the con-servation, sustainable use, and recycling of our natural resources. We also encourage the use of paper products made responsibly from natural resources, and actively pro-mote sustainable practices that positively impact the environment.

Cold Set Printing uses far less energy and produce far fewer volatile organic com-pounds (VOCs) than their heat set counter-parts. Printing direct to plate means that the films and the high VOC chemicals used to develop those films are now obsolete mak-ing our imaging abilities waste free. This also reduces water usage dramatically. Cold Set inks require none of the excessive en-ergy or expel Volatile Organic Compounds (VOGs) into the atmosphere.

Managed by people who care about main-taining the forest, our virgin paper fiber comes from forests which have an ecosys-tem which protects the long-term health of over 133 million acres.

All of our recycled paper is Processed Chlorine Free and is pre-sorted for recy-cling. The paper has not been re-bleached with chlorine containing compounds.

Our printing plates are made out of the same aluminum used to make soda cans. This means that all of our plates are 100% recycled.
