Tao has reality and substance, but no action or form. It can be given but not received. It is attainable but invisible. It is its own source and its own root. It existed before heaven and earth and for all eternity. It causes spirits and gods to be divine. It begets heaven and earth. It is above the zenith and yet not high. It is below the nadir and yet not low. It was born before heaven and earth but not long ago. It was there before the oldest antiquity but is not old.

Hsi Wei attained Tao and brought heaven and earth into harmony. Fu Hsi attained it and entered into the source of vital energy. The Great Bear attained it and has never erred from its course. The sun and moon attained it and have never ceased to shine. Kan Pi attained it and entered Kunlun Mountain. Feng I attained it and wandered along the Great River. Chien Wu attained it and dwelt on Mount Tai. The Yellow Emperor attained it and soared upon the clouds to heaven. Chuan Hsu attained it and dwelt in the Dark Palace.11 Yu Chiang attained it and went to live at the North Pole. The Queen Mother of the West attained it and took her seat on Shao Kwan Mountain. No one knows her beginning and no one knows her end. Peng Tsu attained it and lived from the time of Shun to the time of the Five Princes. Fu Yueh attained it, became Prime Minister to Wu Ting, and ruled the world. Then he mounted the eastern Milky Way, and riding on Sagittarius and Scorpio, he took his place among the constellations.

— Chuang Tsu, Chapter 6

If there is no other, there is no I. If there is no I, there is no one to perceive. This is close to the truth, but we do not know why. There must be some primal force, but we cannot discover any proof. I believe it acts, but I cannot see it. I can feel it, but it has no form.

The hundred joints, nine openings, and six organs5 all function together. Which part do you pre-fer? Do you like them all equally, or do you have a favorite? Are they not all servants? Can they keep order among themselves, or do they take turns being masters and servants?

It may be that there is indeed a true master. Whether I really feel his existence or not has nothing to do with the way it is.

Once one is given a body it works naturally as long as it lasts. It carries on through hardship and ease and, like a galloping horse, nothing can stop it. Isn’t it sad? All through life one toils and sweats, never seeing any result. Weary and exhausted, man has no place to rest his bones. Isn’t this a pity? One may say, “There is no death.” What good does that do? When the body decays, so does the mind. Is this not a great sorrow? Is life really this absurd? Am I the only one who sees the absurdity? Don’t others see it too? — Chuang Tsu, Chapter 2

The great Tao flows everywhere, both to the left and to the right. The ten thousand things depend on it; it holds nothing back.It fulfills its purpose silently and makes no claim.

It nourishes the ten thousand things,But does not rule them.It has no aim; it is very small.

The ten thousand things return to it,Yet it does not rule them.It is very great.

It does not show greatness,And is therefore truly great. —Tao Te Ching, Chapter Thirty-Four

Yield and overcome; bend and be straight;Empty and be full; wear out and be new;Have little and gain; have much and be confused.

Therefore the wise embrace the one and set an example to all.Not putting on a display, they shine forth. Not justifying themselves, they are distinguished. Not boasting, they receive recognition. Not bragging, they never falter. They do not quarrel, so no one quarrels with them. Therefore the ancients say, “Yield and overcome.”Is that an empty saying?Be truly whole, and all things will come to you.

Great knowledge is all-encompassing; small knowledge is limited. Great words are inspiring; small words are chatter. When we are asleep, we are in touch with our souls. When we are awake, our senses open. We get involved with our activities, and our minds are distracted. Sometimes we are hesitant, sometimes underhanded, and sometimes secretive. Little fears cause anxiety, and great fears cause panic. Our words fly off like arrows, as though we knew what was right and wrong. We cling to our own point of view, as though everything depended on it. And yet our opinions have no permanence; like autumn and winter, they gradually pass away. We are caught in the current and cannot return. We are tied up in knots like an old clogged drain; we are getting closer to death with no way to regain our youth. Joy and anger, sorrow and happiness, hope and fear, indecision and strength, humility and willfulness, enthusiasm and insolence, like music sounding from an empty reed or mushrooms rising from the warm, dark earth, continually appear before us day and night. No one knows whence they come. Don’t worry about it! Let them be! How can we understand it all in one day? — Chuang Tsu, Chapter 2

To talk little is natural.High winds do not last all morning.Heavy rain does not last all day.Why is this? Heaven and earth! If heaven and earth cannot make things last forever,How is it possible for us?

Those who follow the Tao are at one with the Tao.Those who are virtuous experience Virtue. Those who lose their way are lost. When you are at one with the Tao, the Tao welcomes you. When you are at one with Virtue, Virtue is always there. When you are at one with loss, loss is experienced willingly.

Perfect is one who knows what comes from heaven and what comes from humans. Knowing what comes from heaven, we are in tune with heaven. Knowing what comes from humans, we use our knowledge of the known to develop our knowledge of the unknown and enjoy the fullness of life until our natural death. This is the perfec-tion of knowledge.

However, there is one difficulty. Knowledge must be based upon something, but we are not certain what this may be. How, indeed, do I know that what I call heaven is not actually human, and that what I call human is not actually heaven? First, one must be true; then there can be true knowledge. — Chuang Tsu, Chapter 6

Shih the carpenter was on his way to the state of Chi. When he got to Chu Yuan, he saw an oak tree by the village shrine. The tree was large enough to shade several thou-sand oxen and was a hundred spans around. It towered above the hilltops with its lowest branches eighty feet from the ground. More than ten of its branches were big enough to be made into boats. There were crowds of people as in a marketplace. The master carpenter did not even turn his head but walked on without stopping.

His apprentice took a long look, then ran after Shih the carpenter and said, “Since I took up my ax and followed you, master, I have never seen timber as beautiful as this. But you do not even bother to look at it, and walk on without stopping. Why is this?”

Shih the carpenter replied, “Stop! Say no more! That tree is useless. A boat made from it would sink, a coffin would soon rot, a tool would split, a door would ooze sap, and a beam would have termites. It is worthless timber and is of no use. That is why it has reached such a ripe old age.” — Chuang Tsu, Chapter 4

The heavy is the root of the light; The still is the master of unrest.

Therefore the wise, traveling all day,Do not lose sight of their baggage.Though there are beautiful things to be seen,They remain unattached and calm.

Why should the lord of ten thousand chariots act lightly in public? To be light is to lose our root.To be restless is to lose control.

Life has a limit, but knowledge is without limit. For the limited to pursue the unlimited is futile. To know this and still pursue knowledge is even more futile. In doing good, avoid fame. In doing evil, avoid punishment.

Thus, by pursuing the middle way, you may preserve your body, fulfill your life, look after your parents, and live out your years.

— Chuang Tsu, Chapter 3

Page 26: TAO - eheart.com · Selections from Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tsu GIA-FU FENG & JANE ENGLISH TAO 2020 CALENDAR. Tao has reality and substance, but no action or form. It can be given

The Tao Te Ching, the esoteric but infinitely practical book written most probably in the sixth century BCE by Lao Tsu, has been translated more frequently than any work except the Bible.

Lao Tsu, an older contemporary of Confucius, was keeper of the imperial archives at Luoyang in the province of Henan, China. All his life he taught that “the Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao”; but according to ancient legend, as he was riding off into the desert to die — sick at heart at the ways of men — a gatekeeper in northwestern China persuaded him to write down his teachings for posterity.

The essence of Taoism is contained in the 81 chapters of the book — roughly 5,000 words. For 2,500 years they have provided one of the major under-lying influences in Chinese thought and culture, emerging also in proverbs and folklore. Whereas Confucianism is concerned with day-to-day rules of conduct, Taoism is concerned with a more spiritual level of being.

Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters is a companion volume to the Tao Te Ching. Very little is known about Chuang Tsu, and what is known is inextricably woven into legend. It is said that he was a contemporary of Mencius, an official in the Lacquer Garden of Meng in the Henan province around the fourth century BCE. Chuang Tsu was to Lao Tsu as Saint Paul was to Jesus Christ and Plato to Socrates.

While other philosophers were busying themselves with the practical matters of government and rules of conduct, Chuang Tsu transcended the whang cheng, the illusory dust of the world, thus anticipating Zen Buddhism’s emphasis on a state of emptiness or ego transcendence. With humor, imagery, and fantasy, he captured the depth of Chinese thinking. The seven Inner Chapters presented in this translation are accepted by scholars as being definitely the work of Chuang Tsu. Another 26 chapters are of questionable origin; they are interpretations of his teachings and may have been added by later commentators.

This calendar features selections from the best-selling translation of the Tao Te Ching by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English, along with selections from their edition of Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters. Both books are illustrated with Feng’s calligraphy and English’s photographs.

Gia-fu Feng was born in Suzhou in 1919 and educated in China. He came to the United States in 1947 to study comparative religion. He held a BA from Peking University and an MA from the University of Pennsylvania. He taught at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and directed the

Stillpoint Foundation, a Taoist community in Wetmore, Colorado. Gia-fu Feng died in 1985.

Jane English was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1942. She attended Mount Holyoke College and received her doctorate in physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1970. Her books include Different Doorway: Adventures of a Caesarean Born, Fingers Pointing to the Moon, and translations of the Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters, the two books she and Gia-fu Feng collaborated on.

Tao Te Ching by Lao TsuTranslated into English by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English with Toinette Lippe

Introduction by Jacob Needleman Photographs by Jane English

“No one has done better in conveying Lao Tsu’s simple and laconic style of writing, so as to produce an English version

almost as suggestive of the many meanings intended.” — Alan W. Watts

This version of the Chinese classic, originally published more than forty years ago, has sold more copies than any other.

The philosophy of Lao Tsu is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it, not against it, for to try to change what is only sets up resistance. Nature provides without requiring payment or thanks, without discrimination; therefore, let us present the same face to everyone and treat all as equals, however they may behave.

This translation eliminates gender-specific language and other infelicities and is accompanied by many new photographs by Jane English.

Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters is a companion volume to Gia-fu Feng and Jane English’s translation of Tao Te Ching, which has enjoyed great success since its publication in 1972.

This edition of Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters includes many new photographs by Jane English and is an updated version of the translation originally published in 1974. Like the original Chinese, this version uses gender-neutral language wherever possible.

Much more than a coffee-table book, this book may help open your mind and heart to the ineffable.

Our wall calendars are printed on Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Certified Mixed Source Paper, which contains 18% recycled content and is processed chlorine free. The FSC label ensures that the wood used to produce the paper comes from well-managed forests, recycled materials, and/or controlled wood from noncontroversial sources.

FSC is an international not-for-profit organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests by developing standards and providing independent certification and labeling of forest products (www.fsc.org).

We further offset our carbon footprint on an ongoing basis by planting trees through Trees for the Future (TREES), a nonprofit agroforestry resource center that helps communities in Central America, Africa, and Asia restore tree cover to their lands. TREES has planted more than 149 million trees since 1989, and by the end of 2018 Amber Lotus had funded the planting of at least 750,000 trees. In addition to removing CO2 from the atmosphere, these trees help restore degraded land, reverse deforestation, improve soil quality, and augment local standards of living (www.treesforthefuture.org).

We have committed to planting at least 50,000 trees in 2019 to offset the resource usage and carbon footprint associated with the production of our 2019 product line (which includes our 2020 calendars). This is more than 21 times the estimated 2,310 trees used to produce these products. One of the advantages of planting trees as

an offset strategy is that they remove CO2 from the atmosphere on an ongoing basis. TREES estimates that the 750,000 trees we have planted so far will remove 12,975 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually, versus the estimated 436 tons of CO2 generated by our 2019 production activities, which results in Amber Lotus being Carbon Negative. Our efforts are summarized below.

WE PLANT TREES. A lot of them — more than 750,000 and growing!

We have committed to planting an additional 50,000 trees in 2019 — more than 21 times the number of trees used to produce our products. And even better, the trees we have already planted remove significantly more carbon than we generate.

With every Amber Lotus product you purchase, you help us plant more trees. Together we are making a difference.
