On Safari, how to book and when to go

Our knowledge of the vast array of possibilities for safaris, holidays and honeymoons inTanzania puts us in a great situation; we can match your dreams to reality. This brochure is

a good starting point for developing ideas, but we need your feedback to tailor the right trip for you.

The National Parks and Reserves of Tanzania rank among thebest in the world for wildlife viewing, and most people choose to

explore them for at least part oftheir stay - on a safari.

A safari may be as long or short asyou wish, although the style andtype of your safari experience issomewhat determined by the parkor reserve you choose.

Whereas the northern parks are theonly place to witness the GreatMigration and the spectacle of theNgorongoro Crater, these parks aremany hours driving distance apart

and are accessible only by closed-sided safari vehicle. It is thereforenot advisable to plan a short safari - anything less than six nights, asyou will simply not have the time to enjoy the best that these parkshave to offer and will spend most of your time driving.

The southern parks and reserves are better suited to a shorter safari,as these require a flight direct to your chosen camp or lodge. Whilethe northern parks are largely the domain of well-established bighotels, accommodation in the south is small, personalised and withvery high standards of guiding and service.

The best months for watching the Great Migration swathe across theplains of the Serengeti are from May to July when the plains arefresh and green, and November to March when they return to calve. The southern parks are good all year round, although especially inthe dry months from July to October.

The finest holidays are built on true knowledge of all thepossible options and how these may be made into a reality for you.We believe in sharing our knowledge and ensuring that you, theclient, have all the latest informationat your fingertips - thus the choicesthat you make will be informed andappropriate to your holiday ideal. For this reason we are committed tokeeping our internet site fully updatedand informative, including up to dateprices, breaking news, photos andmore recently, a constantly updatedrange of digital movies of all the

parks and accommodation options. We will provide you with a numberof itineraries that we will discuss and develop with you in person. We invite clients to join us for a private, personal presentation at our

offices in London, so that we mayfully develop your itinerary to suityou.

It is worth reiterating that we do notcharge any mark-up on the pricescharged by the lodges, as we getspecial rates; the price of your holidaywill be the same as if you were tocontact the lodges directly.

South of the equator, Tanzania and the islands of the IndianOcean enjoy a fine tropical climate, though each country has itsown distinct weather pattern:

The beaches and islands of TanzaniaBeing so close to the equator, temperatures in Tanzania are fairlyconstant throughout the year, although the rainy season in Apriland May is best avoided. June to September are delightful monthsin which to travel, when the climateis hot and dry with very low humidity.November is characterised by the'short rains', which are often littlemore than a fresh downpour for ashort period each day, followed byclear sunshine. From December toMarch the weather becomesincreasingly hot and humid before

The Seychelles & MauritiusNeatly situated outside the cyclone belt, the Seychelles enjoy ayear-round warm and sunny climate. Despite a chance of tropicalrain showers at any time, the driest months are from May untilSeptember. The mountains of Mauritius experience more frequentshowers than those of the Seychelles, although it is quite common for inland showers to leave the beaches unaffected. The driestmonths are from April until November.

The islands of MozambiqueThe best, warmest and driest monthsfor enjoying Mozambique are duringour spring and autumn; from April toJune & September to October. FromNovember to January it is hot andhumid with showers building up tothe rainy season proper in January

At the heart of this incrediblelandscape, the world famousplains of the Serengeti extendover distances comparable in sizeto small countries, and are entirelyunfenced to allow animals freemovement through surroundingparks and reserves.

Each year, over one millionwildebeest and zebra join in a

spectacular Great Migration across this wild expanse, following atime-honoured pathway through the rolling grasslands that reachto each far horizon. These short grass plains are home to anabundance of resident wildlife, and are the hunting grounds forlarge numbers of predators; lion, leopard and cheetah roam atlarge, and in the waters of the Grumeti River lie an ever-patientfoe; hungry crocodiles waiting for a tasty four-hoofed feast.

Nearby, the phenomenon of the Ngorongoro Crater providesa luxuriant haven for wildlife and birds throughout the year. Thefertile slopes of the caldera and lush spring-fed crater floor providelittle incentive for migration beyond the surrounding greenpastures of the crater highlands. This idyllic landscape guaranteesmemorable game viewing experiences, and picnics amid buffalo, lion, and impala. The crater highlands also provide a rare andwonderful opportunity to watch Maasai tribesmen defying the lionprides as they herd their cattle to the water to drink. As the daydraws to an end, vehicles withdrawto lodges perched high on the craterrim, for fantastic views across awide and starlit African night.

The wide soda waters of LakeManyara, flocked with pink flamingos, lie beneath the sheer escarpment ofthe Great Rift Valley. Each hidden

corner of its twining pathways reveals unexpected, sunlit encounters;a petulant trotting warthog or cluster of skittish impala, the flashingcoloured wing of butterfly or bird. This unusual landscape has areputation for inspiring its resident lions to climb trees, perhaps togain a better vantage over their prey, or maybe simply to catch thebreeze during the heat of the day.

Just south from Manyara, Tarangire National Park protects acraggy river valley flanked by grassy, baobab-studded slopes.

This is the favourite meeting place for elephant pow-wowstowards the end of the dry season, when herds instinctively travelfrom surrounding parks to congregate and socialise. The wildlifeof the northern parks relies on the waters of the Tarangire river astheir drinking sources dry up elsewhere, and this park comes alivewith creatures great and small.

The landscapes of the northern parks are each so different that it isworth taking time to explore them all, on a ‘mobile’ itinerary tosuit the season. Wildlife viewing in the north is mainly by vehicle,

and we ensure that you experiencethe magic of this stunning naturalwilderness in a private open-top 4x4vehicle, comfortably ensconced withyour own dedicated driver-guide. Your accommodation may rangefrom the stylish luxury of a lodge toauthentic nights under safari canvas, but whichever you choose, you willalways be assured of the utmost incomfort and fine cuisine.

Northern National Parks

T he rolling, ever-changing landscapes of the Northern National Parks arerenowned for some of the best game-viewing in Africa. These wide open distances, made

famous by countless wildlife documentaries, are alive with all the intricacies of natural life inthe African bush, and provide endless alternatives for varied and inspiring safari experiences.

Grandiose fish eaglesand diminutive kingfishers dive the waters with immaculate skill;wildebeest, zebra and impala dice with death as they come warilyto the waters edge and a thriving population of elephant roamunabashed, crossing the waters with playful exuberance. These arethe special features of the Selous, culminating in breathtakingsunsets that sweep across the end of each magical day.

Thecontrast with the greenery of theSelous makes these parks a greatcombination for a longer safari. Itsred earth reflects the heat of a trulyAfrican sun, and, at its centre, the

Great Ruaha River wends its winding path. The hillsides are thedomain of stately antelope and the dusty distances are coveredwith ease by packs of hunting dog, vast herds of buffalo and elephant. This park seems to express an essence of the great continent ofwhich it is such a small part. Each day the wonders of the bushplay out beneath a changing sky, and guides follow footprints andsubtle signs to bring you to the heart of wildlife action.

Further west, the wide plains of Katavi National Park attractwildlife throughout the year, first when filled with shimmeringfloodwaters and later when they ripple with windswept grasses.

There is no permanent lodge here, but intrepid safari travellersmay enjoy a luxurious camp throughout the dry months. The sheereffort of getting here sets this stunning landscape a long way offthe beaten track, preserving its wild beauty for the few who areprepared to go the distance in search of rare rewards.

The southern parks are characterised by the personal pace ofuncharted days; you decide your daily itinerary with the sun rise

and set. You might choose to exploreup-close and personal, walking, atone with the scents and secrets of thebush, or opt for the gentler vantagepoint of a boat or vehicle speciallyadapted for wildlife viewing. Theorder of the day is small groups, quality attention and the freedom tochoose. Bush breakfasts, lunchesand sundowners are the speciality ofthese camps and lodges.

The Seychelles have a sloganthat describes their charm;‘unique by a thousand miles’.This is the distance to their closestneighbours on the East Africancoast and their uncommon characterstems in part from a storybookhistory of spies, pirates and ship-wrecked sailors that has broughtabout the integration of European,African, Indian, Arab and Chinese

islanders with a heady Creole culture.

This land of startlingly fair weather - mercifully free of malarialmosquitoes - is a natural paradise, with glorious tropical forests, woodlands and beaches unspoilt by the rigours of the modernworld. As a result, the Seychellois are keen to preserve theextraordinary beauty of their many island home, and haveencouraged low impact, high quality opportunities for holidayshere. The result is an inspiring choice of small and absolutelyprivate island hideaways, set among deserted beaches and sandypathways to be explored in dreamy seclusion.

The main islands of Mahe, Praslin and La Digueare characterised by the granite rocks from whichthey are formed, creating impressive rocky peaks attheir centre, and softened boulder sculpturesaround each coast. Mahe is the largest island, thefirst contact, and its tiny capital bustles with thebusiness of colourful island life beneath a backdropof forests and granite outcrops. Praslin is quieter, less populated, and a perfect location for exploringimpressively beautiful beaches and nearby islands, such as the smaller, laid back latitude of La Digue.

The numerous outlying islands are mainly coralatolls, natural enclaves for absolute peace andrelaxation surrounded by startlingly clear seas thatare pure joy to dive, snorkel and swim. These areworlds apart, mostly unpopulated but for the single, small lodge that overlooks their clear coral sands,

and for the masses of birds, turtles and coral reef dwellingcreatures that make these colourful islands their home.

This remarkable country is composed of over one hundred tropicalislands, arrayed over a million square kilometres of Indian Ocean. Each claims their own natural beauty and brims with distinctivebird, animal and plant species, such as the strange and beautifulCoco-de-Mer, the largest seed in the world, and the signature of

the Seychelles' wealth of endemic natural phenomena. Over 6,000Coco-de-Mar palms continue to thrive in the startlingly primevaltrails of the Vallee de Mai World Heritage site on Praslin, whichisland visitors may explore at leisure.

The most exclusive island retreats - Fregate, NorthIsland, Cousine, Denis, Desroches and Alphonse -benefit from their own character and feel. NorthIsland is widely considered to be one of the mostverdant and fertile of all the islands; this naturalgem has become an incredible wildlife sanctuary, thanks to the devotion of Wilderness Safaris, whoopened their luxury five star lodge here in 2003.This, the newest and latest Seychellois barefootparadise, is rapidly earning its reputation as one ofthe most exclusive eco-hideaways in the world.

Mainland Mozambique isscattered with small towns andvillages where local life remainslargely unaffected by moderntimes. The principal cities ofMaputo and Vilanculos, have afascinating clash of colonial andmodern architecture, which whencoupled with their bustlingstreet-life creates a vibrantatmosphere in which to explore.

The main attraction of Mozambique, however, is the 2,700kmisland coastline. Playing host to some of the most luxurious islandhideaways to be found anywhere along the African coast, theislands are surrounded by turquoise seas and flour-soft sand. In thesouth, just off the coast from the southern city of Vilanculos, theBazaruto Archipelago is a group of islands rising like a miragefrom the sea. Isolated by waters brimming with sea life, theseislands are predominantly sand dunes, home to flamingos, ospreys, eagles and dugong - 'seacows'. Most lodges in the areahave less than 20 rooms. Relaxation, watersports and some of theworld’s best saltwater fly-fishing are what the area is all about, reminding you how distant from the rest of the world you reallyare.

The further north you go, the more tropical the climate becomes. The Quirimbas Archipelago, just south of the Tanzanian border, isa dramatic chain of islands extending over an area of nearly 400kilometres. Very different from Bazaruto, the majority of theislands are formed from rough coralatolls. The resulting hidden baysand private beaches are untouchedand simply spectacular.

The diving in Mozambique is worldrenowned for its incredible unspoiltreefs. Turtles, dolphins, rays andkaleidoscopes of reef dwelling fish abound; divers flock to the area forthe migration of whale sharks and

whales each year. The real charm of the region, however, is that itis only now emerging as a top quality destination. In our viewthere is no doubt that now is the time to visit; Mozambique beachchic is the sign of things to come.

The forests and mountains of Mauritius rise verdant and lushfrom the midst of the Indian Ocean. The grandeur of the naturalscene is echoed by the accommodation; this is an island forabsolute relaxation among visionary natural landscapes, and forrelishing some of the most sophisticated beach hotels in the world.

White coral sand beaches and clear seas are the backdrop forimpressive terraces and dining rooms of long-established hotels, accomplished at providing a reliably luxurious service.

The island culture richly colours any stay, its Creole population anintriguing mix of Indian, African, European and Chinese. The

Mauritian welcome is warm andwide-smiling, making visitors soonfeel at home among their swayingpalms, sugar cane plantations andsurrounding coral reefs.

Walking, watersports, diving, snorkelling, golf and fishing are allavailable, alongside spas, therapycentres and all other possible optionsfor absolute relaxation.

Indian Ocean islands

Once the playground of the Queen of Sheba, and on the trading route from old Arabia, the island archipelagos of Mozambique are one of Africa's last untouched areas of pristine

wilderness. Located just off the East coast of Africa between Tanzania and South Africa, theislands remain blissfully unspoilt; for the most part unexplored by all but the privileged few.

Canopy of Stars

Because we favour intimateproperties with atmosphere andspecialise in finding unspoiltsafari country and exotic hide-aways on the Indian Oceanislands, this focus has led us todevelop some truly unbeatableitineraries for a special occasion.

Tanzania is wonderful for romanticholidays and honeymoons for somany reasons; it is one of theeasiest countries in Africa in

which to combine a first-class safari with beach time on an idyllicIndian Ocean island, while its assorted highlights can be easilycombined in a neat itinerary with minimal flying time. Tanzaniarepresents excellent value for money, and its range of differentlypriced lodges means that there is something for everyone. Thesafari experience in Tanzania tends to be small, intimate andspecialised, and the numerous National Parks and Game Reservesare spectacularly unspoilt. There are many elegant choicesoffering a private and personal atmosphere for a very smallnumber of clients, ensuring a quiet and exclusive safari or beachexperience away from the crowds. A further plus is that the weatherbetween June and October is hot, dry and low in humidity.

Our standards for accommodationare incredibly high, but there are afew choices that go one step beyondto the sublimely romantic. InTanzania alone, the NgorongoroCrater Lodge, Beho Beho, RasKutani and Mnemba Island providememorably inspired choices for ahoneymoon or a special occasionnever to forget.

A very popular option is a 'beach - safari - beach' combination thatallows for post-wedding relaxation somewhere utterly idyllic andquiet, followed by the absorbing excitement of a safari and then alonger beach stay to luxuriate by the Indian Ocean.

There is a wealth of choice for beach hideaways in Tanzania andZanzibar, but possibilities for dream-holiday alternatives abound

when you consider that theislands of the Seychelles,Mozambique and Mauritius arejust a short flight away. These areall easily combined in a two oreven three-centre itinerary.

Although we always encourageclients to visit us to discuss theirrequirements, this is especiallytrue for those planninghoneymoons. Ensuring that thisholiday of a lifetime fulfils yourwildest dreams requires meticulous

“Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise, a hunter’sValhalla, an escapist’s Utopia. It is what you will, and it withstands all interpretations.

It is the last vestige of a dead world or the cradle of a shiny new one. To a lot of people, as to myself, it is just ‘home’.

It is all these things but one thing - it is never dull.”
