Hotels explain why they import vegetables, fruitsBY DEVOTA MWACHANG` A
Hotels and supermarkets in Tanzania have said thatthey are compelled to import vegetables and fruitsbecause those produced in the country are of poorquality.
However, importation of horticultural products is saidto reduce the country’s exports earnings as thoseproduced in Tanzania lack reliable m arkets.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on IntegratedHorticultural and Tourism in Tanzania organised by t heMinistry of Agricultur e, Food Security and Cooperativesin Dar es Salaam on Friday, Restaurants Association ofTanzania president Johan Scot Valentine said localhorticultural products are good, but do not no have therequired quality.
“This is the main reason most of the hotels are forcedto spend a lot of money to import the more qualityones,” he said.
“We need to have products that are free from any contamination,” he said, citing the example of the wayfishermen handle fish poorly.
“We want safety of the products that we buy for the safety of our customers too,” Valentine added.
For his part, Horticultu ral Development Council of Tanzania (Hodect) chair man Felix Mosha said there isstill a gap between horticultural producers, hoteliers and owners of supermarkets that needs to beabridged.
“We are discussing how we can join sectors of tourism, agriculture and horticultural that is why weorganised this meeting by involving stakeholders from those sectors. The aim of this meeting is to find outwhy our products have no markets. Is the problem one on quality, production or price?” he explained.
Mosha said if the hotels could buy the vegetables and fruits from small growers they could be sure ofhaving varieties of menus.
Assistant Dir ector Crop Promot ion Services in the Ministry of Agr iculture, Food Security and Cooperatives,Beatus Malema, advised local horticultural producers to ensure that they grow more products in order tocontribute more to the national economy.
“We have quality apples because there are good apple varieties in Iringa Region that are comparable to theones imported fr om South Afr ica. Dodoma produces high standard grapes, while Mwanza has good andtasty variety of pineapples.
“This shows that Tanzania can produce a wide variety of horticultu ral produces suitable for local andforeign markets. What is needed is for the stakeholders to work together through the value chain approachand public private partnership (PPP) spirit for the benefits of the country,” he noted.
