Look up this morning on your drive out. If the sky is clear, you are going to have a great view of the most famous mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, as well as its sister Mt. Meru. After breakfast at Rivertrees, you will drive west to Tarangire National Park.

You’ll begin your adventures in the remote southeast section of Tarangire National Park. Little Oliver’s is a small, intimate camp, located in a secluded part of the bush. Days can be spent wildlife viewing without meeting many other tourists. Night time drives and walking safaris are allowed in this dynamic wilderness area. The camp is located close to the stunning Silale Swamps which attract a plethora of wildlife to its waters.

You’re in for some great elephant viewing in Tarangire. This park boasts one of the largest and most conspicuous elephant populations in East Africa. Look for them congregating together along the Tarangire River, or crossing single file across the roads in front of your vehicle, as they so often do. Numerous baobabs, an ancient type of tree, can be seen dotting the landscape of the park. As you settle in for a sundowner, the dark silhouettes of towering baobabs come alive against the background of the fiery African sky.

Meet up with an expert guide at sunrise for a walking safari. Your walking guide is the bush equivalent of a behavioral psychologist for large mammals. He simultaneously keeps track of numerous factors including the direction of the wind, scents, and exit paths that allow you to enjoy your walk through the bush without having to worry.

Tarangire is more than just elephants and baobab trees. The park has a range of different habitats from grassland and woods in the north to low hills, scrub and swamplands in the south. This mix of habitat is incredibly diverse and not found anywhere else along the northern safari circuit. This means a great deal of different kinds of animals for viewing. It’s not likely that you will go long without seeing grazing herds of zebras and gazelle, giraffes picking at the leaves on the tree tops, or baboons and vervet monkeys grooming in the bushes.

Today you will see an array of rapidly changing environments as you drive from Tarangire National Park to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As you get closer to the Conservation Area gates, dry plains will turn into lush coffee plantations and tropical vegetation. Scale the side of the massive Ngorongoro Crater. Once you reach the top, you’ll have a once in a lifetime view down into the Crater’s caldera where some of the best wildlife viewing in East Africa is to be found.

You’ll descend into the crater for an afternoon of classic wildlife viewing, as you explore the many paths around the Crater floor. Wildlife diversity and density is high. Here, spectacular species including rhinos, lions, buffalo, ostriches, elephants, hippos, hyenas, wildebeests, and countless others can all be found across the short grass plains. Visibility here is excellent, so be sure to keep your camera at the ready.

At the conclusion of the day, you will head to Mysigio Camp for a classic bush camp experience.

Today you will hike and visit with the Maasai in the remarkable landscape of extinct volcanoes, mist shrouded forests, and wildlife filled grasslands that comprises the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area highlands. During this time, you’ll have the unique opportunity to visit the Maasai and develop cultural insights through Sanguyan Kimani Ole Dorop (“Ole Dorop”), your Maasai guide and a regional clan leader. Ole Dorop has spent his whole life here on the slopes of Mount Lemagut, where the Maasai and wildlife share its gentle slopes. The Maasai water their herds at Lemagrut’s hidden springs, and the view from its summit over the Serengeti is breathtaking.

Ole Dorop will walk with you to show you his homestead which is nearby. You’ll meet his family, learn about his village life, and hear about many other aspects of this proud and traditional culture. The Maasai are pastoralists so you will have the opportunity to meet the cattle and goats owned by the family as they come in from grazing and into the enclosures for safety at night. Ole Dorop will also share with you the cultural and political challenges facing traditional Maasai in the Conservation Area. We’ll make sure to show you the community library which was built by Deeper Africa guests.

Head out after breakfast for the wilderness of the great and wondrous Serengeti National Park. You’ll stop for a picnic lunch along the way near Oldupai Gorge where the famous Leakey digs are located. Some of the oldest human skeletons ever found were excavated here. It is considered one of the great anthropological discoveries of history.

The word Serengeti means endless plain, and it will be clear why as you wildlife view on your way to Kiota Camp. Here, the horizon stretches seemingly without end and wildlife can be seen passing by for miles around. You’ll arrive at Kiota Camp in the evening which is located in the central Seregeti (known as the Seronera). Both plains game and the predators who stalk them come to this area for its more abundant food and water sources.

Head out early for spectacular game viewing in the central Serengeti. Scout the area in search of its healthy populations of large cats. You can find them during the daylight hours hiding in tall grasses, perched high in the trees, or looking for the cool shade of a rocky outcrop. Prides of lions, prowling cheetah, and self-reliant leopards can be found all around here. Nothing beats the heart pounding thrill of watching a cheetah take off across the plains after its prey, accelerating from zero to sixty miles per hour in only three seconds.

Back at camp you will enjoy drinks, stories, and excellent company around the campfire. Look up at night for a nearly unpolluted sky where the stars of the Milky Way illuminate the darkness. During your stay at Kiota we encourage you to learn more about “back of the house” operations. Visit the kitchen and watch your food being prepared in traditional, sustainable ways. Check out the recycling operations, the solar generation area, water boiling areas, or firewood and fuel storage centers.

During the right time of year (March - June) you may have the good fortune to find yourself surrounded by the great migration herds of wildebeest, thompson’s gazelle, and zebra. Each year, these enormous herds cover the plains on their pilgrimage from the Mara, into the Serengeti, and back in search of greener grasses. It’s a sight unlike any other in the natural world.

This morning, you’ll be picked up by bush plane. You’re heading south into Tanzania’s largest conservation area: Ruaha National Park. Ruaha is Tanzania’s best kept secret. It is the country’s largest national park, yet it has very few visitors. Ruaha sits in a transition zone between the savannas common to northern Tanzania and the woodlands more common to Zambia. It is a unique place with both thick vegetation in some areas and more open grasslands in other areas. Roughly ten percent of the world’s lion population lives within Ruaha and it happens to be the only park in which both greater and lesser kudu can be seen together.

You’ll be guests at Kwihala Camp, a frontier-style camp that provides exceptional access to the park’s huge populations of big cats, buffalo, and elephants. Ruaha is built for adventure, and with a wide range of activities to choose from - walking, driving, and nighttime safaris - you can explore the bush as you choose in the company of expert wilderness guides.

Ruaha National Park straddles the Eastern Rift Valley, making for some striking landscapes of contrast. The rivers and swamps are alive with crocodiles and hippos. The dry open hillsides allow buffaloes and antelope to gather in large herds. All of these herd animals, as well as zebra and giraffe, can be observed as they make their way to the Great Ruaha River to drink. The savanna and bush ecosystems of Ruaha hold one of the largest elephant populations in all of Africa. In certain regions, the horizon is dotted with baobabs. Get your species checklists ready for possible sightings of sable and roan antelope, bushbuck, impala, leopard, cheetah, and playful packs of African wild dog.

Hit the trails on foot for a walking safari in Ruaha. Look for tracks along sandy, dry river beds and see if you can follow them to the herds that made them. Look for any small rustling in the bush where pangolins like to hide.

Head out in the afternoon in a land cruiser to see the unique predator viewing Ruaha has to offer. There are many prides of lions which tend to be much larger in size than those found in northern Tanzania. Prides in Ruaha can have up to 20 members. Cheetahs are frequently seen in the grassland areas of the park, with leopards staking claim to the more wooded areas. Not to be outdone, the smaller predators also make their claim on territory with spotted hyena and black-backed jackals frequently seen. Follow the sounds of lions roaring, and it may just lead you on an epic chase alongside them as they stalk their prey.
