TANK CONSTRUCTION METHOD USING A COMBINATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE WITH HDPE

2 DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF TANKS MADE OF A COMBINATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE WITH HDPESZAGRU ® specialises in the design, construction of above ground, underground, cylindrical and cuboid-shaped tanks executed by combining reinforced concrete with HDPE.

Most liquid storage tanks installed nowadays are made with the use of conventional methods as reinforced concrete walls. A disadvantage and inconvenience of this method is that it is difficult: to achieve a watertight formwork for the proper curing of the structure, to achieve a watertight concrete tank, to protect the rebars embedded in the tank walls from corrosion, to protect concrete from ageing and the influence of aggressive media. Another difficulty is that if the tank is to be used to store potable water, the inner walls of the tank walls must be coated with a certified coating suitable for such purposes, and finally the extended tank installation process.

To design a tank that we offer we can use conventional methods. However, still at the design stage, the first advantage of the technology we offer is a reduced wall thickness of the tank because there is no need for rebars to have a thicker concrete cover to protect them from corrosion. For each tank we draw up construction design documentation approved by a design engineer licensed to design reinforced concrete structures.

TANK CONSTRUCTION

The tanks may be of cylindrical or cuboid shape, situated above round or underground. It isconstructed on a foundation slab (4), its external walls are made of HDPE (2), as well as its internal walls (3), the base (5) and the top cover (6), but the space between the external walls (2) and the internal walls (3) is filled with concrete (13), and a concrete layer of appropriate thickness is poured over the reinforced top cover (6). The internal walls (3) from the side of the interwall surface (12) are provided with plastic vertical ribs (7), and the base (5) and the top cover have horizontal ribs (8).

While constructing the tank we may eliminate the external plastic wall and perform a conventional formwork. Then the tank is a typical reinforced concrete structure with an internal, watertight chemical resistant HDPE lining. The tank walls as well as the stub pipes are made of HDPE pipes and sheets. The pipes and sheets are butt welded or extrusion welded together. The tanks are intended for use as manholes, pumping stations, gate valve chambers, water meter chambers, liquid storage tanks etc.

A cylindrical vertically-oriented tank.

Lining the tank with HDPE sheets ensures a completely watertight structure, protecting concrete against ageing and the influence of aggres-sive media. When the tank is intended for potable water storage, we use sheets approved for food contact. Moreover, this technology redu-ces the time of installation, construction and formwork removal. What is more, in case of demanding project requirements and conditions, this technology proves to be time-effective. Smaller tanks may be placed in the excavation and then the interwall space can be filled with concrete. The process of pouring concrete does not have to be continuous due to the tightness of the plastic shell.

The picture shows the construction of a cylindrical, reinforced concrete, underground tank performed in the above described technology – a combination of reinforced concrete and HDPE.
