Module 6: Pressure Tank Cars
Training Support Package
Tank Car Specialist
IntroductionPressure tank cars are those with a tank test pressure between 100 and 600 psi that are used for transportation of liquefied compressed gases and liquid hazardous material (HazMat).
Upper tank fittings are enclosed in a protective housing. Pressure tank cars do not normally have bottom fittings.
Tank Car Specialist
Enabling Learning Objectives6-1 Identify the components that are normally found on a
pressure tank car for loading and unloading, determining capacity, pressure relief, and security measures.
6-2 Identify the location, function, and arrangement of the following as commonly found on a pressure tank car:
• Liquid Valves• Vapor Valves• PRD-Pressure Relief Devices• Sample Ports• Gauging Devices• Thermometer Wells• Vacuum Relief Devices
Tank Car Specialist
Enabling Learning Objectives6-3 Demonstrate the proper use of the following devices in
controlling a release, determining the conditions within the tank car, and determining the capacity of a pressure tank car while participating in a realistic scenario-based derailment:
• Liquid Valves• Vapor Valves• PRD-Pressure Relief Devices• Sample Ports• Gauging Devices• Thermometer Wells• Vacuum Relief Devices

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSStep 1 Grip handles and remove housing.
Step 2 Move packing nut lever in a counterclockwise direction.
Step 3 Press rod latch and pull gauge rod upward until it is above the liquid.
Step 4 Open the control valve counterclockwise, keep turning until vapor flows from valve orifice.
Step 5 Push gauge rod down slowly until flow changes to liquid.
Step 6 Fish gauge by moving it upward and downward several times over short distances above and below the liquid level until liquid level is determined by the vapor-liquid flow.
Step 7 Close the valve clockwise. Set only finger tight. Do not use wrench.
Step 8 Read graduations at top of pointer.
Step 9 Press rod latch and push gauge rod completely down.
Step 10 Tighten packing nut lever clockwise (reverse of Step 2).
