Tamworth Wireless – 4 Years in the Making
2007 • Gunnar Berg, Brian Forcier and Dennis Quinn develop the original design for Tamworth Wireless
2008 • Brian and Dennis share the idea with the Board of Selectmen
• Selectmen decide it is not an appropriate town investment; neither Dennis nor Brian have the free time to start a new enterprise
2009 • Pat Farley invites Dennis to be an “advisor” to the Tamworth Economic Development Committee (TEDC) on the future of Broadband in Tamworth, Dennis agrees to “explore” what it would actually take to create this network.
• NH’s federal broadband grant application is unsuccessful
2010 • With encouragement from Carol Miller, the NH Broadband Czar, Dennis decides to “just do it” and submits an application to the Tamworth Foundation
• Tamworth Foundation approves a $100,000 grant to Tamworth Wireless

How the System Works
• Bandwidth is purchased from NHVT and travels through a phone line to a 10” dish on the back of the UCC Church
• A signal is broadcast from UCC to the Great Hill Fire Tower, and from there to Page Hill and Bunker Hill
• The signal is broadcast from those access points to a “internet radios” at individual residences, and to neighborhood nodes.
• A cable from the internet radio brings the signal to into the customer’s home.

Projected System Performance Goals
• Each user will be guaranteed a minimum level of bandwidth
• Bandwidth will depend on the pricing plan (higher cost, more bandwidth)
• The “standard” bandwidth package is expected to be able to deliver:
• 3 megabits (3 million) of download speed• 1 megabit (1 million) of upload speed
• The Beta Test phase (first 25 customers) will determine verifiable system performance

Customer Sign Up Process – Beta Test
1. Fill out a form if you are interested.
2. Dennis will email everyone on the list to verify interest. (This will include those who expressed interest through the community survey, and online survey.)
3. Dennis will choose 25 representative customers, based on technical needs, and geographical location to effectively test the capabilities of the system.
4. Tamworth Wireless will provide and install customer equipment for free.
5. Customers will be connected for one month at no cost while system is being tested.
6. To continue, customers will sign a one-year contract.

Future Customer Additions
• Once the Beta Test is completed, additional customers will be added at the rate that the system can effectively absorb.
• The number of customers will need to be matched to broadband supply to assure guaranteed speeds.
• Depending on the Beta Test results, it may be feasible to offer a reduced cost for initial equipment and installation fees to “first wave” customers – but we will not know this until the Beta Test is complete.

Summary
• Tamworth Wireless will be an important new economic development asset for the town.
• In the future, our system will enable us to access even faster broadband speeds.
• The implementation process is technically complicated and needs to be done in a deliberate and careful manner.
• We will move as quickly as our quality standards allow us to!
