LAST TIME OUT: The 2019 Florida State League season opened on Thursday and RHP Clarke Schmidt gave the Tampa Tarpons a nearly perfect performance, but the Lakeland Flying Tigers scored late and prevailed in walk-off fashion, 4-3 in 10 innings… A game-winning RBI single by Brady Policelli sent many of the crowd of 1,675 home happy from Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium.

AS ADVERTISED: Right-handers Clarke Schmidt and Casey Mize squared off on Opening Night and showed fans why they both were first-round picks by their respective clubs. Schmidt, selected by the Yankees 16th overall in 2017, held the Flying Tigers to two base runners (both reaching via error) while tallying a career-high nine strikeouts in five shutout innings. Meanwhile, Mize, the first overall selection in the 2018 draft by Detroit, allowed one hit while fanning eight Tarpons in five scoreless frames. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

ALMOST A NO-NO: Following Schmidt's five hitless innings, RHP Rony Garcia retired the first six batters he faced in relief, taking a no-hitter into the 8th. The bid ended when Lakeland's Luke Burch reached a bunt single to begin the inning.

THE NEW GUYS: Infielders Oswaldo Cabrera, Dermis Garcia and Chris Hess all started and picked up thier first hits as members of the Tarpons. Hess (1-for-3, HBP) singled to open the 6th, but was stranded. Garcia (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, R) lined a one-out single in the 7th and scored on a double by Isiah Gilliam (1-for-4, 2B, RBI), who scored on a base hit by Steven Sensley (2-for-4, RBI). Cabrera (1-for-4, 2B, R) and Garcia would then con-nect on back-to-back doubles to produce a run in the 9th. RHP Brooks Kriske (L, 0-1) also made his Tarpons debut, but shouldered the loss in extras (1.0IP, 1H, 1R/0ER, 3BB, 1K).

CONTROVERSEY: The Tarpons took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th. After a leadoff walk by Kody Clemens, a deep fly ball was hit down the left field line by Daniel Reyes. The ball flew over the fence and was ruled "fair" by home plate umpire Jude Koury. Many of the Tarpons on the field became visually upset and manager Aaron Holbert pled "foul ball." After a conference between Koury and umpire J.C. Velez, the call was upheld.

PITCHING PROSPECTS: The Tarpons open the season with three Top-30 New York Yankees prospects in the starting rotation: RHP Deivi Garcia (No. 4 MLB/No. 6 BA), RHP Clarke Schmidt (No. 5 MLB/No. 12 BA) and RHP Glenn Otto (No. 26 MLB/--BA).

NEW SKIPPER IN TOWN: Aaron Holbert begins his fourth season in the Yankees organization and his first as a coach after spending the last three seasons as a professional scout. Prior to joining the Yankees, Holbert was Manager of Double-A Mississippi (Braves) from 2012-15. In that span, the Southern California native led the club to two postseason appearances, including a record of 83-56 that paced the Southern League in 2014.

Prior to Mississippi, Holbert managed Single-A Advanced Kinston (Indians) in 2010 and 2011. Kinston made the playoffs in both seasons and Holbert was named Carolina League Manager of the Year in 2011. Holbert began coaching in the Reds organization in 2006 before landing his first managerial position with Single-A Lake County (Indians) in 2008. The club went 146-131 over two seasons, including a postseason appear-ance in 2009.

Originally drafted 18th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals out of high school in 1990, Holbert reached the major leagues with St. Louis (1996) and Cincinnati (2005) over a 16-year playing career, including stints with St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Boston, Florida, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

MIGLIACCIO/MAHONEY JOIN COACHING STAFF: Hitting Coach Joe Migliaccio (Mig-lee-AH-chee-oh) begins his first season in the Yankees organization. The 28-year-old served in the same role at the University of Iowa in 2018 following coaching stints at Murray State (2017-18), Mis-souri (2016-17), Southeast Missouri State (2015-16) and Siena College (2014-15). As a graduate assistant at Missouri, Migliaccio helped guide the Tigers to their best record (36-23) since 2008.

Prior to coaching, Migliaccio was an infielder at Florida International (2009-10), Parkland College (2010-12) and Oral Roberts (2012-14). The West Melbourne, Florida native graduated cum laude from Oral Roberts in 2014 with a degree in recreation administration with a minor in humanities. He earned his master's degree in education from Missouri in 2018.

Defensive Coach Kevin Mahoney enters his fifth season in the Yankees organization and his first with Tampa after serving in the same role in 2018 with the GCL Yankees East. Mahoney was the hitting coach for short-season Single-A Staten Island in 2017 and Rookie-level Pulaski in 2016 after making his coaching debut in the GCL in 2015. Originally selected by the Yankees in the 23rd round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, Mahoney batted .252 with 183R, 34HR and 160RBI in 381 games across five minor league seasons.
