planet earth. Her mother perished a few days after her 100th birthday. It is because she fi nally surpassed her years of existence on earth by a year that she wants a special 101 birthday celebration. “I want my three children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family to be part of that celebration. However, fi nancial constraints hinder my wish of celebrating my day in style. I want to be showered with various gifts and the venue for the birthday celebration should be at my house in Vosloorus,” said Matee. However, the gogo’s wish to celebrate her milestone feasting with friends will not materialise if residents and businesspeople do not dig deep in their pockets to make the day possible. She was born in 1914 in rural Bethuna in the Free State before relocating to Vosloorus in pursuit of

greener pastures during the early years of her life. Despite Matee’s amazing life-story, some of the major health challenges she faces are poor eyesight and arthritis; but she is still healthy and able to walk without a great deal of aid. “It is ironic that I have outlived three of my daughters who are no longer alive today and the other three are still alive. I live longer because I am eating healthy with less fat and I also respect the elderly. While growing up we were taught to refrain from relationships with boys and the elderly people constantly conducted virginity testing on us,” added Matee. Her advice to today’s youth is that they should r espect the elderly and learn from them. People interested in sponsoring her birthday celebration (date still to be confi rmed) can call her daughter Maria Matee on: 082 361 1056 or her daughter-in-law Seipati Motshoeneng on: 083 955 2001.

Residents of Rondebult Extension Two, Cathuza Street

have been living with floods and the stench of sewage since December last year - the floods are affecting more than eight houses and have ruined residents’ furniture. According to resident Mavis Binza, opening doors and windows during the festive season was impossible owing to the unbearable stink; and, for the elderly residents in the area, it was mission impossible to walk out of their respective yards due to constant floods. “Last time my family cooked a decent meal was a long time ago because of the sewage stink and our drain system has been blocked by soil erosion and dumped rubbish. We alerted Ward 41 Councillor Mandisa

Msweli about our situation and she brought the disaster management emergency services team but they were unsuccessful,” said Binza. She added that they unblocked the sewerage drains but their efforts brought only a temporary solution that resurfaced. Binza said the blocked drains redirected water back into the residents’ yards. Her neighbour Gladys Keele said when it was raining their houses were constantly flooded and they had to use buckets to remove water in a bid to save their furniture. She said their poor drainage system could not deal with the flooding caused by the rain. “My furniture valued at approximately R20 000 has been damaged, which caused huge financial constraints. The municipality should unblock the sewerage drain for us to enjoy our stay here,” said Keele.

Ward 41 Councillor Mandisa Msweli warned that residents should refrain from dumping rubbish in the sewerage drain and in the water trench. “Residents should make sure that they check their dirty water for items that might cause blockages before pouring it into the drainage system. Construction of Mfundo Street will soon commence because floods in the area start at Mfundo Street. Residents should stop building outside room foundations above sewerage pipes and start attending local imbizos to raise issues of their concern,” concluded Msweli.

The impact of the budget speech will come under the spotlight during the Vaal Triangle Campus’s (NWU Vaal) first Alumni Breakfast Forum hosted by the Alumni Office on Friday, 27 February at Quest Conference Centre in Vanderbijlpark. The guest speaker of the day, Ettienne Le Roux, is a Chief Economist at Rand Merchant Bank and a member of the South African Statistics Council. The spotlight will be cast on the budget speech at the Vaal Triangle Campus (NWU Vaal) two days after the Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene tables his National Budget in Parliament on 25 February. It is speculated that Minister Nene will have to orchestrate a delicate balancing act - taking into consideration not only global and domestic economic growth, while ensuring consistent service delivery. No one would ever think that a police officer could be a victim of a scam – however, Sergeant Thandi Helen Nkanyani from Vosloorus Police Station was robbed of her wedding ring by street vendors trading goods in exchange for jewellery.Nkanyani alleges that last year in December, when she was in Ponong section in Vosloorus with her friends, they were approached by three street vendors who were carrying mirrors and cutlery. According to Sergeant Nkanyani, the three suspects informed them that they were exchanging gold earrings and rings for cutlery and other items. She told the vendors she was not interested, but they insisted on inspecting her wedding ring to the value of ten thousand rands. Nkanyani removed the ring and gave it to the vendors, who put it on top of the machine and poured a chemical on it that turned it black. She was shocked but they promised that

they would return it to its original colour. The ring was also broken; so, one of the vendors phoned their boss and told the Sergeant that they had been told to take her the ring. The vendors took the ring and left their goods at the premises of the police-woman, promising to return as soon they had finished fixing the ring. The suspects phoned her after two hours, informing her that they were still busy with the repairs. Nkanyani said she tried to call them again, but the phone rang without being answered and was later switched off. The vendors neither came back with the ring nor collected their goods as initially promised. A case of theft has been opened at Vosloorus Police Station and investigations are underway. The police are appealing to the community to help with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. Report by SBV ServicesSBV Services has been providing business owners with end-to-end cash solutions for more than two decades and it knows what the dangers are – and how to minimize the risks that go with handling cash.“Criminals are working really hard to find more and more ingenious ways to rob hard-working, honest businesses, but there are a number of small steps that businesses can take to protect their cash and valuables,” says Grant Dunnington, the CEO of SBV Services. V i o l e n t a t t a c k s on South A f r i c a n

businesses rose as much as 14 percent in the past year, according to police reports. Most of these attacks – in which a great many people were injured and even killed – were aimed at one thing: relieving businesses of their cash on hand. For cash-handling micro, small or medium businesses, the consequences of these robberies (18 615 of them in 2013/14) are as obvious as they are often deadly – they can easily bring companies to their knees.

Tips to reduce your business’s riskAccording to Dunnington, basic cash-handling security measures should include these measures: • Use licensed cash-collection security companies to move and bank large amounts of cash, as opposed to sending

out vulnerable, untrained and ill-equipped employees to do what is a fundamentally dangerous job;• Keep minimal cash on your premises. If you have been robbed once, do not think that “lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice” – after your first robbery you are even more vulnerable than you were

before; • After hours, store valuable

items that are normally on display in a safe or vault;

and• Make sure that your insurance

provider is up to date with your regular risk audits, upgrades or changes to your premises.

Tips for SMMEs• Do not let e m p l o y e e s c a r r y i n g cash wear uniforms or badges that can identify them with

your business;• If your staff have to move cash to the bank, keep educating them on the importance of being vigilant, even suspicious, at all times. Give them the resources that will save your cash – and even their lives – such as full tanks of petrol, cellphones and emergency numbers. Never let them take public transport or walk to the bank;• Use secure containers that disguise what your people are carrying, as opposed to the obvious canvas money bags; and • Continually vary the routes and times used to move cash from the business to the bank.

Police Flying Squad officers arrested two suspects after a high speed chase on Kliprivier Road (the R550) near Zonkizizwe on Monday at about 20:00 pm.It is alleged that the police officers decided to follow the Opel Kadet from the N3 as it was driving at a very high speed. During the chase, the officers noticed something that looked like a child’s body being thrown out of the suspect’s vehicle. A few moments later they noticed a woman also being thrown from the vehicle they were pursuing. The suspect’s vehicle was eventually stopped a few kilometres away. Two suspects were found inside the vehicle and arrested.

The police retraced their steps and found the woman who was thrown out of the moving Opel Kadet. She was badly injured and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The child, Nhlanhla Dlamini, was found in Heidelberg, with injuries to his forehead and arm.Further investigations revealed that the vehicle was not stolen and that the victims were given a lift, but that the vehicle was going in the wrong direction. The woman was coming from Orange Farm and going to Balfour, but she realized that they were heading in the direction of Alberton along the old Heidelberg road. It was also discovered that one of the suspects was on parole for armed robbery.

three years working on this album and featured some of Mzansi’s leading gospel stars, ” explained Maduna. The songs that have gained recognition from the 17-track gospel album include “Worship medley” in which Gcabashe featured Mzansi gospel stars Keke Phoofolo and Dr Tumi. The “Worship Madly” track is about worshipping God.“Another hit song in the album that is making waves in iTunes is track number 8 dubbed “Impi.” The song reminds people that the war they encounter in life should be relegated to the safe hands of the Almighty Lord, with the talented Mpumi Dlamini featured on the saxophone. In

the “Ukholwa” track Gcabashe featured Sicelo Moya - originally the song was traditional but we merged gospel, urban and contemporary music styles in the “Ukholwa” track,” said Maduna. Gcabashe worked on various musical projects with numerous reputable artists, including Kelly Khumalo, Max-Hoba, Tuks, Shuggasmaxx, Nothende, Thiwe and HHP, before unleashing his debut album. He has performed extensively in major music festivals in the country such as the Macufe 2010 and the Road to Joy of Jazz 2013, to name but a few.

My Body My Space is a new festival of public arts happenings co-ordinated by The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC) in Ekurhuleni between 2 and 7 February. The event features a range of works by Johannesburg’s top contemporary choreographers and dance companies, community based artists and crafters. It celebrates 20 years of democracy as it explores issues relating to gender violence and the impact of HIV/Aids; and aims to re-stitch communities and spaces that have previously been separated, to shine a light on the role of women, children and other vulnerable members of society and find a shared voice and experience around critical, personal and social issues. The festival will play out as a series of ‘guerrilla style’ art interventions, installations and live public performances, erupting on the streets and pavements of Ekurhuleni, in hubs of city life, under-served communities and at the intersection of its diverse citizenry. Since antiquity, philosophers and architects have imagined cities as bodies, with arteries and veins through which pedestrians and traffic stream; My Body My Space seeks to make the connection between the individual and the city patent. With the City of Ekurhuleni as a metaphor for the human body, FATC envisages the festival and events unfolding along the city’s numerous critical routes and arteries, which serve as major transport routes but are also significant in their linking of historically, politically, socially and economically

separated communities. The installation of My Body My Space will take place during 2015 as follows: February 7 from 11am to 4pm: Central Nervous System at Wattville’s OR Tambo Cultural precinct. The programme comprises dance, music, cultural events and performance art, as well as a craft and vendors’ market, creating a rich experience that activates every corner of the cultural precinct. The audience will travel with the programme on foot. They will be guided through an array of happenings,

performances and installations placed at strategic points along the route. Performances in the “Arteries,” including taxi ranks, markets, parks and other public spaces in Katlehong, Thokoza, Wattville, Benoni and Daveyton will take place as follows:February 2 at 2pm: Performance at Khumalo Street, Thokoza, followed by a procession and performed installations.February 3 at 2pm: Performance at Natalspruit Street, corner Kgotso Street in Katlehong, followed by a procession and

performed installations.February 4: Performance at the Eiselen Road Mall Taxi Rank in Daveyton, followed by a procession and performed installations.February 5: Performance at the Voortrekker Road Taxi Rank in Benoni, followed by a procession and performed installations.February 6: Performance at Wattville Park in Dube Street, followed by a procession and performed installations. The collaborative and creative phase for

these exciting interventions commences on 10 January and continues throughout the month.

“As we celebrate 20 years of democracy and political freedom the festival is a call to artists, both the public and private sector and the citizens of Ekurhuleni to actively engage in a process of personal and social transformation and healing in addressing critical issues that are

our current stumbling blocks to true emancipation,” says PJ Sabbagha, the festival’s mastermind and founder of FATC.The initiative is supported by the City of Ekurhuleni and the Department of Arts, Culture, Promotion and Development.A craft-market will take place in Wattville on February 7 and a knitathon will take place as a part of the My Body My Space project. The knitathon will take place between 10am and 3pm and the knitted squares will be made into blankets for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.

Minister delivers on her promise

The Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor finally put smiles on the faces of the Mfeka family in Eastfield, Vosloorus when she handed over the television set she promised them during the last national election campaign. Minister Pandor promised the family a television set when she visited their house during the ANC door-to-door national election campaign last year, after they told her about the burglary that occurred in their home during which their television set was stolen. The Minister said: “I decided to return to the Mfeka family to deliver on the promise I made. We don’t want to remember people only during the elections period. Our mandate as

African National Congress (ANC) is to deliver on the promises we have made even though we sometimes took a while.” It is unfortunate, however, that the gift of the television set came after Thembekile Mfeka’s husband passed away late last year. However, Mfeka was pleased that Minister Pandor managed to live up to her promise. “It doesn’t matter the length of the time that was taken to deliver on the promise made. I acknowledge Minister Pandor’s visit irrespective of her heavy schedule to deliver on the promise made. On a daily basis I pray for the ruling party to succeed in its endeavour of changing people’s lives for the better,” said Mfeka.

“In any company everyone is important, whether a cleaner, security guard and even an ordinary layman.” So said motivational speaker Abner Mariri at the B3 workers function held at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni on Saturday 17 January. Abner emphasized the importance of team work. He said “In order to achieve excellence, you need to be committed and do your jobs. B3 has made a mark in the funeral and insurance industry all because of the contributions of every worker,” he said.B3 chairman Matthews Mogafe said the annual awards were one of the company’s initiatives to appreciate the contributions of the workers. “All of you are important to the company and

I want to thank you for your hard work and selfless contributions. Congratulations to all the winners and I believe they will be shining examples to others that they can also do it, by going the extra mile in whatever they are doing,” he said.Matthews said the key elements of the success of the company lie in the hands of the workers. “Without you, the company could have not set high standards in the industry; therefore I would like to urge every one of you to give 100% performances in all the departments to ensure that clients get the best services,” he said.Sharon Magoro received Outstanding Performer and Long Service awards, which went with a handy cheque. A senior administration clerk and parlour consultant from Mabopane, Magoro said she was overwhelmed. “I never expected this, but I’m excited that my work is recognized. The secret behind my success is commitment and dedication towards my work - I value my job so much and the awards are the testimony,” she said.Elias Tjale (34) another winner, who joined the company in August, won The Best Newcomer award. The excited Tjale said he thanked God for his success. “Wow! This was unbelievable - hardly five months in the company, and I scooped an award. The award will serve as an encouragement to work hard and contribute to the growth of the company,” he said.

Welcome, everybody, to 2015. As we all know, people have different New Year’s resolutions concerning their health and eating habits. Some people want to lose some kilos, while others want to gain some or maintain their normal weight. It is all up to the individual to choose how they want their bodies to look like. This year in our cooking column we will be providing you with nutritious and delicious recipes. We are kicking

off the year with a lemon bar recipe contributed by Crissy from Ubuntu Creative School. The recipe is nutritiously rich in calcium and vitamin C.

PREHEAT oven to 180° C. Line an 8-inch-square (20cm) baking pan with foil, leaving a 2-inch (5cm) overhang. Spray foil with non-stick cooking spray.BEAT butter, powdered sugar and salt in large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour on low speed until just combined (mixture will be crumbly). Press dough on to bottom of prepared pan.BAKE for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden.WHISK together egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice and lemon peel until smooth. Pour over crust. Bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes or until set. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.REFRIGERATE for 2 hours or until firm. Using

foil overhang, lift on to a work surface; cut into 20 bars. Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving. Squares will hold, covered, in refrigerator for up to 3 days.A FEW TIPS:If you make the bars in advance, don’t dust with powdered sugar. Only do this right before serving. To produce really clean slices, place the baking pan with lemon bars in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting. Wipe the knife between cuts. If desired, trim away edges. For serving, place bars in individual paper cupcake liners. This way guests can easily help themselves and you need not worry about dessert plates.

Democratic Alliance councillor Tiziana Burtone assisted at a fun day hosted by the Antioch Tabernacle in December in Villa Liza, Boksburg. In a community that struggles with problems related to drugs and poverty, this church helps to give back in a way that is uplifting for both the parents and children. The church provided children from the area with a day filled with jumping castles, food

and presents. Burtone was delighted to have been a part of something so positive within this community and has thanked all those at the Antioch Tabernacle who made the day possible. For years, she says, the DA has called on the government to declare war on drugs with specialized police units and social projects to put a stop to the poison that is wreaking havoc on the most vulnerable communities.

What’s going on in Soweto?

LOCAL HAWKERS: are often much less well

resourced than foreign spaza-owners.

Opinion piece by Palesa Yates

The recent looting of foreign spaza shops in Soweto has grabbed headlines, concerned investors and had government washing their hands of the problem with words like “criminality” and “xenophobia.” Is the problem really that simple, though? Are the reasons for the stealing of millions of rands worth of stock [http://www.citypress.co.za/news/counting-cost-sowetos-looting/ ] just jealousy, criminality and xenophobia – or is the situation more complex? While jealousy plays a part in the looting, it is not the whole story. Black apartheid entrepreneur Richard Maponya himself said in 2013, “that white businesspeople and foreigners should not be allowed to dominate business in townships. ‘Soweto has suddenly become a place where white businesspeople want to do business, when small entrepreneurs of the area should be given an opportunity to own business here.’ ” [http://www.citypress.co.za/business/bee-real-thing-richard-maponya/] In the past ten years, there has been a wave of big supermarkets and filling station shops moving into many townships like never before. In many cases, the only businesspeople able to undercut their prices are the Somali, Pakistani and Bangladeshi shopowners who sell their cut-price products from behind bars, looking more like bank-tellers than friendly corner shopowners.

Many sources claim that foreign spaza-owners are undocumented foreigners who pay no tax to the South African government and bribe the police with airtime and colddrinks to turn a blind eye. A visit to any one of our Gauteng townships will reveal a sharp contrast between their typically well-stocked and secured premises and the makeshift plastic sheets held up by sticks that locals generally sell their spinach, bananas and amakipkip (sweet, coloured popcorn) from. So jealousy is no doubt a factor when foreigners are targetted, but it is not the only one. The looting frenzy in Soweto allegedly started with the shooting of a South African 14-year-old by a foreign spaza-owner. The same thing happened in Etwatwa, Daveyton late in October last year, although it was not as widely reported - apparently a young nyaope addict was caught stealing from a Pakistani-owned shop and shot in the foot by the owner. Local residents then sent all the foreign spaza-owners in the area packing, but not for long - they are now all back in business. If government does not blame the problem on criminality and xenophobia, it will be forced to admit that its policies have failed to make inroads into South Africa’s massive problems of unemployment and corruption; and, of course, next month the Honourable Malema will be back in Parliament telling our President to “pay back the money.” According to an old Zimbabwean proverb,

“a fish rots from the head down.” So how can our first citizen expect standards of integrity from the poor, the uneducated and the unemployed that he himself does not display? How can government urge local entrepreneurs to work together to compete with foreign spaza-owners when the latter have a reputation of non-payment of taxes, unfair labour practices, bribery of the authorities, possession of illegal weapons - and even impregnation of local young girls? Who should parents report their suspicions to when they believe their children are in danger of being shot by trigger-happy shopowners with illegal weapons who have the police on their payroll? The recent spate of looting – although an example of inexcusable public violence and

criminality - was perhaps not so much about unrestrained thuggery as targeted retribution and intimidation. According to the City Press, “Next to Sea Point, there is a shop owned by a South African. It was not plundered. All foreign-owned tuck shops in Zola North were closed this week.” [http://www.citypress.co.za/news/cops-told-us-loot/] The Sunday Times printed a photograph on their front page of a wall with the spray-painted message “Somalis, hands off our spazas.” [250115]In the meantime, however, poor Soweto consumers who rely on the low prices charged by foreign spaza-owners will have less food to put on their plates. Those renting premises to foreigners may also suffer.

BAFANA HEADING BACK HOMEEphraim “Shakes” Mashaba’s boys lived up to their notorious reputation of exiting the tournament in the group stages when they lost their must-win game against the Black Stars of Ghana this week. South Africans were holding their thumbs when the home team opened their scoring account with Kaizer Chiefs wonder boy Mandla Mahalangu’s volley in the first 17 minutes of the game. However, our team lived up to their reputation of scoring first in all their group stage games, but failed dismally to dictate terms in the middle of the park and consolidate a lead. Black Star demonstrated experience and vigour to come back into the game when they started camping in the South African half, giving no space to the Mzansi boys to breathe. The Ghana coach introduced a double substitute late in the second half, which accelerated the attack of the Black Stars and their efforts were finally rewarded when John Boye drew level in the 75th minute. Mashaba made a desperate change when he introduced Amakhosi

pair Reneilwe Letsholonyana and Bernard Parker. However, the Ghanaian engine room was already on fire and the Bafana team could not handle the constant wave of attacks on their goal mouth. The four-time African champions rising star Andre Ayew scored an immaculate header which sealed the final score-line at 2-1 in favour of Ghana. Bafana are now coming back home with their tails between their legs after losing

two games and drawing one in the group stages. Meanwhile, Amajita arrived to a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo after winning the prestigious Commonwealth of Independent States Cup. So, there is still hope for the South African Football Association (Safa) football development plan aimed at steering our national team in the right direction.

NOOO! Bafana Bafana exited the tournament after a 2-1 loss to Ghana.
