This has resulted in different stakeholders highlighting overcrowding as the main cause. In a press statement released by Jack Bloom, Democratic Alliance, Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, he stated that the hospital members of staff are over-worked and are resigning, due to severe overcrowding of patients. He said he discovered this matter last week when he visited the hospital as part of the DA’s campaign to cut hospital queues. “Nurses have resigned at the Obstetrics Department because of a large increase in patients who should normally be treated at local clinics but don’t trust the care they would receive there. I also saw long queues at the Urology and Ophthalmology Departments. Patients complained that they had arrived in the early morning but were still not seen by 2pm. They said that the queues were worse than at the old Natalspruit Hospital. There is only one urology specialist and two medical officers to handle 80 patients on Mondays and about 70 patients on Thursdays. The Natalspruit Urology Unit is the only one for patients in the East Rand,” said Bloom. He added, “Ironically, the paperless electronic system that has replaced files is a major cause of delays because it takes time to register patients on it and many staff have not yet been trained to use it. It’s a vicious cycle as staff resignations increase the strain on remaining staff, who are also tempted to find work elsewhere.” Prince Hamnca, Head of Communications at Gauteng Department of Health, denied the statement that the staff members are resigning due to overcrowding at the hospital. He said staff at the new Natalspruit Hospital tender their resignations as and when they get better opportunities elsewhere or reach retirement age. “Gauteng Department of Health continuously recruits personnel - in particular, specialists - for all its facilities. We are actively recruiting personnel and filling all vacant funded posts. In order to ensure an effective healthcare system, the Department continues with its efforts to improve services which amongst others include the attraction and retention of skilled workers, availing bursary opportunities, providing adequate incentives, improving working conditions, reducing workloads and ensuring that workers have the necessary tools of their trade,” said Hamnca. Public urged to collect deceased relatives In pursuance of the Digital City imperative,

the City of Ekurhuleni demonstrated the quick and easy way to pay your municipal account using a reliable platform known as e-Siyakhokha (Siyakhokha means “we pay”) on Thursday, 9 october in Alberton.Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance Cllr Moses Makwakwa discussed the purpose of the Siyakhokha Programme and Ekurhuleni CFO Ramasele Ganda emphasized the importance of paying for services rendered and explained the services of the Finance Department. “It is an increasing concern that we find more people still complaining about not receiving statements. The e-Siyakhokha Services Website is accessible 24 hours a day, throughout the year. When a user accesses the e-Siyakhokha Service website, an encrypted and completely secure connection is made between their browser and the e-Siyakhokha Service servers, ensuring that the e-Siyakhokha Services experience is safe and secure,” Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe said. This service allows you to pay for services in the comfort of your own home. This service will also allow users to receive their municipal accounts two weeks earlier than by postal delivery, and users will also have access to a full history of their account, including bills,

payments and electronic correspondence. The e-Siyakhokha service also offers the capability to lodge a query or complaint that will be sent to the relevant department within the EMM. For residents who do not have internet access at home or on their phones, they will also be implementing kiosks in all major malls around Ekurhuleni, the first one being in Lake View. According to the EMM, more than 200 residents are already registered with e-Siyakhokha.Cllr Makwakwa commented by saying that revenue is important for basic services and made a call to all residents capable of paying to do so.To register, visit www.e-siyakhokha.co.za. You will need your municipal services account number, your ID number or company registration number and your personal details. Payments can be made from a banking account of your choice. It is important to know that the transaction does not create a monthly debit order and that you need to complete the payment for each invoice. “It is time the Ekurhuleni, being the biggest Metro, gets modernized,” CFO Ramasele Ganda said. “As we pay our bills, we progress the Metro forward,” she concluded. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Chris Hani Crossing Mall Marketing Manager Lebohang Matlala is proud that the mall is turning four.

Friday 10 October was a highly anticipated night at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena, when the first artist to go on stage to entertain the fans was Gerhard Steyn. His music captivated the crowd, with people singing along him. He was followed by fellow Afrikaans singer/actor Bobby Van Jaarsveld, who won the Best Newcomer category at the Skouspel Extravaganza Festival in 2006. The audience listened attentively to his music before The Parlotones band took over the stage, claiming authority of the music concert, as was expected of them.

The Parlotones band pulled out a splendid performance, which took the fully booked Carnival City Big Top Arena to greater heights, with the fans demanding more music after they wrapped up the show with their hit song Push Me To The Floor.Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones band lead singer said, “it was good to be back, especially after recovering from the vocal cord damage that almost ended my career.”Fans showed their appreciation to all the artists by complimenting their good performances and taking photographs with them at the main stage entrance.

A house was burned down at Siluma View in Katlehong and a mentally challenged old man’s buttocks were severely burnt in the process. It is alleged that the victim of the fire was staying alone in the house and the cause of the fire is unknown. According to Katlehong Police spokesperson Captain Mega Ndobe, home-based care workers who usually visit the old man to assist him were the ones who first discovered that the house was

on fire. He said they called emergency services personnel to extinguish the fire. The emergency officials discovered the old man inside the burnt house with third-degree burns on his buttocks and transported him to the hospital for treatment In a related incident, another house was also burnt down in Vosloorus and it was discovered that a 57-year-old woman died. Carnival Foods 20 years celebration coincided with the country’s 20 years celebration of democracy.680 Carnival Foods members of the staff from all the branches including Mpumalanga were part of the celebration dressed in their traditional regalia and company’s t-shirts. They handed out free jiggies snacks to people and they also had a lunch feast, with refreshments at their Alberton North premises.Manny De agrela, Managing Director of Carnival Foods told tame TIMES that they are proud to celebrate 20 years. “When we

started a business we wanted to create for ourselves but as the company grows, we realise that we have other responsibilities including catering for our employees. For the past 20 years, the company has grown successful and we have created our own individual family. We believe in making the best product at a reasonable and affordable prize. It is our social responsibility that often reminds us that people are most important,” said De agrela. He added that they manufacture jiggies snacks, cornflakes and an energy drink branded under their name. In an effort to improve the investigation and prosecution of cases, the Department of Community Safety in Gauteng has sent 50 police officers from across the province to enrol for a forensic examination course. Detective Constable Tshepo More from Vosloorus Police Station was one of the 50 detectives from the province who underwent training in forensic examination at the University of Western Cape to strengthen their investigation skills.Speaking to tame TIMES, the programme beneficiary said that they had undergone a training programme at the University of the Western Cape and graduated recently at Midrand University. “Fraud cases are not properly investigated; the forensic examination course came in handy. I feel honoured to be part of the programme and the knowledge gained will be helpful. I’m currently investigating a fraud case that occurred in Cape Town and the expertise I have gained during training will be utilised,” said More. He added that pass on his new knowledge to his colleagues. Vosloorus Police Station spokesperson Captain Piet Rossouw stated that they are honoured that their colleague is the only police officer from the Katlehong Cluster to benefit from the programme. “Detective Constable More will host in-service training for the Katlehong Cluster Police officers

and his forensic examination expertise will be utilised during fraud investigations,” said Rossouw. MEC of Gauteng Department of Community Safety Sizakele-Nkosi Malobane said, “The group of 50 detectives has completed their training. We hope we will soon see an improvement in the investigation and prosecution of cases. Moving forward, further skills gaps will be identified and interventions developed to ensure that we constantly enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies in the province.”

The Ekurhuleni Youth Chamber of Commercial and Industry (EYCCI) will be hosting a business imbizo (summit) aimed at mobilizing youth in business this Friday at Thokoza Church Hall in Nkaki Section. The Imbizo’s objective is to inform youth in business about business opportunities and

to identify potential investors. Thulani Phiri, an Ekurhuleni YCCI task team member said: “they aimed at engaging the government to dedicate about 30 percent of its tenders to the local youth in business. The summit starts from 10am -2pm. Kathorus youth in business are invited to the event,” concluded Phiri. For more information about the event contact Thulani Phiri at: 081 281 8527 or Google: Gpycci.

The Greater Boksburg Business Chamber Secretary Israel Ndarane is concerned about the Township Economy Revitalise (TER) plan recently announced by Gauteng Premier David Makhura for various townships in Gauteng. Speaking in his personal capacity, he said the TER objective is to boost township economies and make the trading environment conducive for township businesspeople. This economic plan is also about building the skills of township entrepreneurs, and maximizing township business operations and the township economy. Ndarane’s bone of contention is not about the glowing economic plan, but about the lack of clarity given on how the plan will be rolled out and how the funds will be allocated. “It is vital that the provincial government starts hosting more roadshows to enlighten township people about the plan. About R1 billion is earmarked to be distributed over five years towards building the township economy,” said Ndarane. He said Gauteng people want to find out what infrastructure plan the provincial government is looking at upgrading to meet the demands of the ever growing population of the province.

Ndarane demands clarity on which township businesses would get first priority from the allocated funds over the next five years. “It is vital that they (Provincial Government) start outlining the criteria that would be used in appointing the beneficiaries of the programme, so that the public could access the funds without hindrance. The funds should not be used for administration purposes but should be directed to the rightful beneficiaries of the TER plan,” concluded Ndarane.

Loss of life was averted recently when Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Intervention Unit members spotted a man on a motorbike driving recklessly, skipping stop signs and weaving dangerously and unsteadily through traffic along MC Botha Drive in Vosloorus. The police officer chased the biker, who refused to stop until he lost control at the intersection of Moagi and Khoza Streets, where he almost collided with a group of learners. The obviously intoxicated rider was arrested and had his blood drawn at Botshelong Hospital in Vosloorus. The suspect, who

had no identification on him and refused to give his name or address, was detained at the Vosloorus Police Station. He appeared in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless and negligent driving.

A homeless suspect recently caused a major electricity blackout by burning down an electricity substation which transmits power to Vosloorus essential services. The incident left local residents withou t access to service delivery for a day. Vosloorus Police Station spokesperson Piet Rossouw said the affected areas included: Vosloorus Ekurhuleni Municipality Offices, Vosloorus Police Station and Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court. “SAPS police officers and EMPD official computers, radios and the local Magistrate’s Court were temporarily suspended for a day due to the fire incident. Our investigation revealed that a homeless person unlawfully gained entry to the electricity substation and slept inside it. Due to the cold, the suspect started a fire in an effort to get warm. The fire ended up setting alight the electricity substation cables, causing a huge fire. Ultimately, the electricity box exploded and

the entire essential service block’s electricity was shut down,” explained Captain Rossouw.“No arrests were made and no injuries were reported. We are still looking for the homeless person who instigated the fire. The estimated damage and cost of fixing the substation is about R100 000. People should know that it is illegal to sleep in the electricity substation and, if found sleeping there, they will be arrested and this will lead to their prosecution,” concluded Captain Rossouw.

Nhlanhla (pictured below) is wanted for stealing the red Mazda 323 motor vehicle with the registration number “CR04MJGP” that he was employed to drive as a local taxi-operator (amaphela) in Vosloorus.Makhosazana Guni Simelane, 47, alleges that the car belongs to one of her church brothers. She borrowed it from the owner, Sipho Innocent Ndinisa, to use as a taxi since she is unemployed, and hired Nhlanhla as a local taxi driver. On 14 March 2014 however, he took the car in the morning at around 05:40 as usual to go to work, but has still not returned until today. Simelane said she tried calling him but his

cellphone is always on voicemail. She said she does not have any detailed information about Nhlanhla, only his photograph. She hired him on referral from his previous employer who now claims he does not know anything about his whereabouts. Simelane said the car is around Gauteng, however, because they still receive the e-toll bills and speed fines.Meanwhile, Captain Piet Rossouw, spokesman for Vosloorus Police Station, has warned people to stop employing strangers. “People must refrain from employing people they don’t know. They should ask for their identity documents, contact details, address and work experience. The employer should register the employees for Unemployment Insurance Fund for security reasons,” warned Rossouw.

NOT SO LUCKY: Nhlanhla is wanted for the theft of a motor vehicle.

A suspicious-looking situation on the N3 freeway near Vosloorus recently attracted the attention of Metro Police officers patrolling the area and led to an arrest. An articulated truck had pulled over, with a Toyota Fortuner with three occupants parked behind it and one man standing nearby. The three occupants of the Toyota Fortuner and the man standing next to the vehicles were all searched. The occupants of the Toyota Fortuner turned out to be the owners of the articulated truck, who were assisting the driver to change a flat tyre, but the man standing next to the vehicles was found to have a 9mm Norinco pistol with nine live rounds and its serial number filed off. The 39-year-old suspect, who claimed he was on his way to KwaZulu-Natal, was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Vosloorus Police Station. He was expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court shortly thereafter.

Vosloorus Police detectives are looking for two male suspects (pictured below) for questioning about the disappearance of a wedding ring worth R6 000.According to Captain Piet Rossouw, Communications Officer of Vosloorus Police Station, a 46-year-old woman from Sotho section in Vosloorus alleges that the suspects approached her to exchange old gold jewellery for a handbag. The complainant told the suspects that she was not interested in exchanging her wedding ring for a handbag. However, the men convinced her that they were interested in checking whether the ring she was wearing was pure gold or fake. Prior to the entry of the suspects into the lady’s house, the complainant insisted on taking their pictures with her cellphone for security reasons, and they did not hesitate. The complainant said that while the suspects were in the house, they poured a chemical

on top of her wedding ring and it changed colour. The suspects dipped the ring inside a vinegar container and placed it in the refrigerator. They promised the complainant that the ring would later return to its normal colour. Little did the complainant suspect that the two suspects had left with the ring - when she went later to check the ring inside the refrigerator, to her dismay, the ring was nowhere to be found.According to Captain Rossouw, it is illegal for hawkers to exchange handbags for old gold jewellery, because, when second-hand goods are exchanged, registration is needed and the business must be approved by the police, who issue permits. He cited that the exchanging of handbags for gold objects without a permit is another way of exposing unsuspecting people to criminals. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the two suspects can report this to the nearest police station as they are wanted for questioning,” concluded Captain Rossouw.

This fortnight, the focus is on the dangers of alcohol for pregnant women. Many television adverts are normally for alcoholic beverages and never emphasize the dangers of alcohol, especially for pregnant women.Foetal Alcohol Syndrome causes a deformity in a child born to a woman who consumed high levels of alcohol while pregnant. What most of these women don’t understand is that a foetus is always growing and developing - and that puts the unborn baby in danger as the brains are always developing. Sadly, when a child is born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, the chances of the child being born with some disabilities are high.National Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Day aims to reinforce messages about the risk of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and to encourage early prevention of foetal alcohol syndrome disease. As a nation we have the responsibility of making sure that unborn babies are not affected by women drinking alcohol while pregnant. This can be prevented by educating pregnant women and not selling alcohol to them. Here are some facts about foetal alcohol syndrome:No amount of alcohol is safe during

pregnancy. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), foetal alcohol syndrome is the biggest cause of mental retardation in North America, Canada and South Africa. The number of people affected by foetal alcohol syndrome is three to five times more than those with HIV and AIDS. Foetal alcohol syndrome is 100 percent preventable but it cannot be cured. This column is contributed by Moses Gama, Deputy Chairperson of Project and Programmes at the national Central Drug Authority Board and the Founder and Director of Tsohang Youth Project.

South African Breweries (SAB) has launched a national retailer business training programme aimed at improving tavern owners’ business skills and educating them on how to run a profitable and sustainable business in a socially responsible manner. The Customer Business Development Programme (CBD), targeting approximately 4 200 tavern owners across South Africa, seeks to build and enhance tavern owner business skills. SAB also aims to raise trader awareness of their obligation to trade responsibly, a requirement to maintain their license to operate and to help minimize the harmful effects of alcohol in society. CBD is an extension of SAB’s Mahlasedi Taverner Development Programme which ran from 2004 until 2009 and reached more than 16 000 taverners through an investment of R54-million. Tavern owners who participated in Mahlasedi reported an increase in business performance. “Local licensed traders make a valuable contribution to the success of SAB as a business and towards the economy of the country. The Customer Business Development Programme allows us to empower them with the skills necessary to maintain and grow sustainable, profitable and responsible businesses, which will continue supporting their families and improving others’ lives through the creation of employment,” says Refentse Shinners, SAB

Manager Enterprise Development. Tavern owners undergo a four-day training programme allowing them to gain a better understanding of how to manage their personal finances, basic business skills, as well as how to plan and grow a tavern business. Additionally, tavern owners will be given valuable information and skills on how to trade responsibly as a means of minimizing the harmful effects of alcohol abuse within their communities. This is provided through SAB’s Responsible Trader Programme (RTP), a high impact and holistic approach to engaging liquor traders on alcohol abuse and the harm it causes communities, which is a first of its kind in South Africa.

The Responsible Trader Programme focuses on three key areas: 1. Creating awareness about the harm caused by alcohol abuse and the role the trader plays in driving a reduction of alcohol abuse in their respective communities; 2. Building trader competence to actively ensure responsible trading in the outlet; and 3. Building trader competence to create awareness among outlet staff and customers about responsible trading and the harm caused by alcohol abuse

On completion of the CBD programme, tavern owners will be provided with certificates, and plans are underway to offer post-training business management support from SAB.
