A group of 20 people trying to loot foreign-owned spaza shops in Eden Park were stopped in their tracks when the police responded swiftly. However, minor incidents of looting, attacks and attempts to rob foreign spaza-owners were reported.The owners of the spaza shops responded by shutting down their shops and removing their goods from their premises to safer places. Captain Mega Ndobe, spokesperson for Katlehong Police Station said, “There was an attempt to loot in Eden Park and police responded immediately, thereby stopping the perpetrators. The spaza shopowners have also closed down their shops. It is quiet for now and no arrests have been made.”Habtamu Getchwa, an Ethiopian national

spaza shopowner situated in Extension 5 of Eden Park, who was also a victim of looting said, “Ten males approached me attempting to break into my shop. They threw stones and beat me, informing me to go back to my country. I am packing my goods and moving to a safer place because I am scared I might lose my goods,” said Getchwa.Another foreign spaza shopowner, Birhanu Sarache, said he was also attacked and beaten. He was also moving his goods out of his shop. Sibongile Mokwena, a South African residing in the area said, “People are now fighting the battle of Soweto. It is wrong and a criminal activity to loot and fight foreign spaza shopowners. They are selling their goods at a cheap price and they allow us to buy on

credit and even if the money is short, they give us items.” Various parts of Gauteng have been affected by the looting of spaza shops that began last week following the shooting of a 14-year-old child in Snake Park, Soweto when a Somali shopowner allegedly fired at a group of people trying to rob his shop. The shooting sparked a wave of looting of foreign-owned shops, which spread from Soweto to Kagiso on the West Rand and Sebokeng in the Vaal, causing several deaths, including that of a baby. The looting spread to Langlaagte, moving also to Alexandra and Eden Park. However, the situation is now calm and police are deployed in the affected areas to monitor the situation and are therefore able to respond swiftly.

Matiro Motoung, the owner of a house in the Vergenoeg section of Thokoza could not bear the pain when a newborn baby girl of about

two to three weeks of age was found dumped in her toilet last week Monday.“I don’t understand and I am asking myself many questions about why the baby was dumped inside my toilet. The suspect passed all the houses and chose mine,” said Motoung.“Is it because the person knows that l am staying alone with no grandchildren? This act is stressful. I am praying that the mother of the child could be caught soon and explain how it happened,” she added.According to Motoung it is alleged that in the early hours of the morning at about 12:00 am her neighbour heard the noise of a baby crying. She said at about 4:00 am the neighbours realized that the noise was coming from her yard. Neighbours tried to wake her up but they were unsuccessful. Motoung was finally woken by the police and a group of neighbours who showed her a crying baby inside her toilet. “The baby was wearing a romper and a bottle of water was left next to her. The baby was alive and police took her to the nearest police station,” concluded Motoung.Constable Patrick Mashiane, spokesperson for Thokoza Police Station said, “The baby was taken to Natalspruit Hospital for a check-up. We are working with the social workers to arrange a place for the baby to stay. No case has been opened and no arrests have been made. We are appealing to the community to come forward with information that could lead to the identification of the mother or the family of the baby.”

The Mokwena family and the police are searching for Kagiso Mokwena (6) from 1494 Tshongweni section in Katlehong who went missing on 9 January this year.Sbongile Mokwena, the child’s grandmother, said

her grandson had left home around midday to play in the park with his friend whose parents are her tenants. “His friend came back home alone and informed me that an unknown woman took my grandson with her. He showed me the direction they took and we have tried to search for them, without success since that unfortunate night,” said Mokwena. She alleges that her tenant’s son told them that an unknown woman came to the park where they were playing and offered to buy them sweets. The woman gave the children money to buy sweets and when they came back she took Mokwena with her. Kagiso Mokwena was last seen wearing checked brown trousers, a green golf shirt and purple sneakers with yellow laces. Captain Augustinah Selepe said, “There are no developments so we are still investigating the case of kidnapping. Kasie FM’s Jabulani Xhasa “Dj X” recently celebrated his 34th birthday in style by unveiling his latest inspirational projects on air.The inspirational projects are under the banner of his company Excellence Unlimited. According to Xhasa, the latest project includes a compilation album, book of short stories and various accessories ranging from T-shirts to inspirational messages written on key-holders. “I decided to unveil my inspirational work to the Kasie FM listeners across Ekurhuleni. My compilation album is called Dj X and Friends which is part of my inspirational work. The album i s a

mixture of RnB, Pop and House music, which consists of 10 tracks. Ekurhuleni artists featured in the album include: Madluphuthu, Mpho Putini, Kruna, Zipho, Untshebe, Vice, Lifika labo Tshabelo, Sabelo Mthembu and others. Police Flying Squad officers arrested two suspects after a high speed chase on Kliprivier Road (the R550) near Zonkizizwe on Monday at about 20:00 pm.It is alleged that the police officers decided to follow an Opel Kadet from the N3 as it was being driven at a very high speed. During the chase, the officers noticed something that looked like a child’s body being thrown out of the suspect’s vehicle. A few moments later they noticed a woman also being thrown from the vehicle they were pursuing. The Opel Kadet was eventually stopped a few kilometres away and two suspects were found inside the vehicle and arrested. The police retraced their steps and found

the woman who had been thrown out of the moving Opel Kadet. She was badly injured and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The child, Nhlanhla Dlamini, was found in Heidelberg, with injuries to his forehead and arm.Further investigations revealed that the vehicle was not stolen and that the victims were given a lift, but that the vehicle was going in the wrong direction for them. The woman was coming from Orange Farm and going to Balfour, but she realized that they were heading in the direction of Alberton along the old Heidelberg road. It was also discovered that one suspect was on parole for armed robbery.

Police statistics show violent attacks on South African businesses rose as much as 14 percent in the past year, says SBV Services, an organization specializing in cash risk management.Most of these attacks – in which a great many people were injured and even killed – were aimed at one thing: relieving businesses of their cash on hand. For cash-handling micro, small or medium businesses, the consequences of these robberies (18 615 of them in 2013/14) are as obvious as they are often deadly – they can easily bring companies to their knees. “Criminals are working really hard to find more and more ingenious ways to rob hard-working, honest businesses.

“However, there are a number of small steps that businesses can take to protect their cash and valuables,” says Grant Dunnington, CEO of SBV Services. The company has been providing business owners with end-to-end cash solutions for more than two decades and it knows what the dangers are - and how to minimize the risks that go with handling cash.

According to Dunnington, basic security measures should include these measures: • Use licensed cash-collection security companies to move and bank large amounts of cash, as opposed to sending out vulnerable, untrained and ill-equipped employees to do what is a fundamentally dangerous job;• Keep minimal cash on your premises. If you have been robbed once, do not think that “lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice” – after your first robbery you are even more vulnerable than you were before; • After hours, store valuable items that are normally on display in a safe or vault; and• Make sure that your insurance provider is up to date with your regular risk audits, upgrades or changes to your premises. TIPS FOR MICRO/SMALL BUSINESSES

• Do not let employees carrying cash wear uniforms or badges that can identify them with your business;• If your staff have to move cash to the bank, keep educating them on the importance of being vigilant, even suspicious, at all times. Give them the resources that will save your cash – and even their lives – such as full tanks of petrol, cellphones and emergency numbers. Never let them take public transport or walk to the bank;• Use secure containers that disguise what your people are carrying, as opposed to the obvious canvas moneybags; and • Continually vary the routes and times used to move cash from the business to the bank.

A newborn baby’s head was found inside a plastic bag next to a bar building in Nhlapho section in Katlehong recently.The body of the newborn baby, who is estimated to be one to two weeks old, was missing. Katlehong North Police officers are investigating a case of murder. It is alleged that the community members in the area saw the head and alerted the police. The motive for the killing is unknown and no arrests have been made so far. Police are appealing to community members to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators and the identification of the baby’s family.

MURDER CASE: The head of the newborn baby is inside a black plastic bag.

A man was arrested on Monday in Phola Park for murdering another man during a robbery. It is alleged that the victim had come from a tavern and was on his way home at around 2:00 am when he was approached by two males. They stopped him and demanded his belongings. The victim tried to resist, but they fought back and stoned him; they then took his wallet and Blackberry cellphone and left him injured on the ground. The victim’s cousin, who had decided to follow him on his way home, saw two men running and found his relative lying on the ground bleeding. The cousin wanted to call the ambulance, but the victim refused. He took him to his house and in the morning, on his way to work, he went to check on him and found him dead. One suspect was arrested the same day and will appear in Palm Ridge Court soon. The other suspect is still at large.

A 29–year-old male was arrested for shooting another man to death along Lekwane Street in Thokoza last week Monday. “A man was shot and killed inside a white BMW in the early hours of the morning at about 1:45 am. The investigations led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man the same day at about 16:30 pm. The suspect was detained at Thokoza Police Station and an investigation continues as the motives of the shooting are still unknown,” s a i d

Constable Patrick Mashiane, spokesperson for Thokoza Police Station.He said it is alleged that the police received a tip-off from security officers about five gun-shots fired along Lekwane Street next to Letsoho Mall in Thokoza. On their arrival at the street, they saw a white BMW with the deceased gun-shot victim inside it.“The deceased was identified by his brother. The suspect will appear in Palm Ridge Court soon,” said Constable Mashiane.

Major General Ledwaba is going to join the Sunnyside cluster in Pretoria as the cluster commander. He will be replaced by Major General Tebello Mosikili who will be the Katlehong Cluster commander.

My Body My Space is a new festival of public arts happenings co-ordinated by The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC) in Ekurhuleni between 2 and 7 February. The event features a range of works by Johannesburg’s top contemporary choreographers and dance companies, community based artists and crafters. It celebrates 20 years of democracy as it explores issues relating to gender violence and the impact of HIV/Aids; and aims to re-stitch communities and spaces that have previously been separated, to shine a light on the role of women, children and other vulnerable members of society and find a shared voice and experience around critical, personal and social issues.The festival will play out as a series of ‘guerrilla style’ art interventions, installations and live public performances, erupting on the streets and pavements of Ekurhuleni, in hubs of city life, under-served communities and at the intersection of its diverse citizenry. Since antiquity, philosophers and architects have imagined cities as bodies, with arteries and veins through which pedestrians and traffic stream; My Body My Space seeks to make the connection between the individual and the city patent.

With the City of Ekurhuleni as a metaphor for the human body, FATC envisages the festival and events unfolding along the city’s numerous critical routes and arteries, which serve as major transport routes but are also significant in their linking of historically, politically, socially and

economically separated

communities. The installation of My Body My Space will take place during 2015 as follows: February 7 from 11am to 4pm: Central Nervous System at Wattville’s OR Tambo Cultural precinct. The programme comprises dance, music, cultural events and performance art, as well as a craft and

vendors’ market, creating a rich experience that activates every corner of the cultural precinct. The audience will travel with the programme on foot. They will be guided through an array of happenings, performances and installations placed at strategic points along the

route.

Performances in the “Arteries,” including taxi ranks,

markets, parks and other public spaces in Katlehong, Thokoza, Wattville, Benoni and Daveyton will take place as follows:February 2 at 2pm: Performance at Khumalo Street, Thokoza, followed by a procession and performed installations.February 3 at 2pm: Performance at

Some people want to lose some kilos, while others want to gain some or maintain their normal weight. It is all up to the individual to choose how they want their bodies to look like. This year in our cooking column we will be providing you with nutritious and delicious recipes. We are kicking

off the year with a lemon bar recipe contributed by Crissy from Ubuntu Creative School. The recipe is nutritiously rich in calcium and vitamin C.

PREHEAT oven to 180° C. Line an 8-inch-square (20cm) baking pan with foil, leaving a 2-inch (5cm) overhang. Spray foil with non-stick cooking spray.BEAT butter, powdered sugar and salt in large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour on low speed until just combined (mixture will be crumbly). Press dough on to bottom of prepared pan.BAKE for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly golden.WHISK together egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, lemon juice and lemon peel until smooth. Pour over crust. Bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes or until set. Cool completely in pan on wire rack.REFRIGERATE for 2 hours or until firm. Using

foil overhang, lift on to a work surface; cut into 20 bars. Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving. Squares will hold, covered, in refrigerator for up to 3 days.A FEW TIPS:If you make the bars in advance, don’t dust with powdered sugar. Only do this right before serving.To produce really clean slices, place the baking pan with lemon bars in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before cutting. Wipe the knife between cuts. If desired, trim away edges. For serving, place bars in individual paper cupcake liners. This way guests can easily help themselves and you need not worry about dessert plates.

A male rape suspect (22) committed suicide before facing the long arm of the law.The suspect committed suicide by hanging himself from the roof of his home. It is alleged that he left a suicide note stating that he had been raping his 14-year-old cousin since she was 10 years old. The incident happened in Moleleki section in

Katlehong. The deceased suspect had been residing in the same house as his cousin, the victim. Captain Mega Ndobe, spokesperson of Katlehong Police Station confirmed that the incident happened and that the suspect was certified dead on the scene by paramedics. He said the victim, who is a minor, will be sent for a medical examination.

The recent looting of foreign spaza shops in Soweto has grabbed headlines, concerned investors and had government washing their hands of the problem with words like “criminality” and “xenophobia.” Is the problem really that simple, though? Are the reasons for the stealing of millions of rands worth of stock [http://www.citypress.co.za/news/counting-cost-sowetos-looting/ ] just jealousy, criminality and xenophobia – or is the situation more complex?While jealousy plays a part in the looting, it is not the whole story. Black apartheid entrepreneur Richard Maponya himself said in 2013, “that white businesspeople and foreigners should not be allowed to dominate business in townships. ‘Soweto has suddenly become a place where white businesspeople want to do business, when small entrepreneurs of the area should be given an opportunity to own business here.’ ” [http://www.citypress.co.za/business/bee-real-thing-richard-maponya/] In the past ten years, there has been a wave of big supermarkets and filling station shops moving into many townships like never before. In many cases, the only businesspeople able to undercut their prices are the Somali, Pakistani and Bangladeshi shopowners who sell their cut-price products from behind bars, looking more like bank-tellers than friendly corner shopowners.

Many sources claim that foreign spaza-owners are undocumented foreigners, who pay no tax to the South African government and bribe the police with airtime and colddrinks to turn a blind eye. A visit to any one of our Gauteng townships will reveal a sharp contrast between their typically well-stocked and secured premises and the makeshift plastic sheets held up by sticks that locals generally sell their spinach, bananas and amakipkip (sweet, coloured popcorn) from. So jealousy is no doubt a factor when foreigners are targetted, but it is not the only one. The looting frenzy in Soweto allegedly started with the shooting of a South African 14-year-old by a foreign spaza-owner. The same thing happened in Etwatwa, Daveyton late in October last year, although it was not as widely reported - apparently a young nyaope addict was caught stealing from a Pakistani-owned shop and shot in the foot by the owner. Local residents then sent all the foreign spaza-owners in the area packing, but not for long - they are now all back in business.If government does not blame the problem on criminality and xenophobia, it will be forced to admit that its policies have failed to make inroads into South Africa’s massive problems of unemployment and corruption; and, of course, next month the Honourable Malema will be back in Parliament telling our President to “pay back the money.” According to an old Zimbabwean proverb,

“a fish rots from the head down.” So how can our first citizen expect standards of integrity from the poor, the uneducated and the unemployed that he himself does not display? How can government urge local entrepreneurs to work together to compete with foreign spaza-owners when the latter have a reputation of non-payment of taxes, unfair labour practices, bribery of the authorities, possession of illegal weapons - and even impregnation of local young girls? Who should parents report their suspicions to when they believe their children are in danger of being shot by trigger-happy shopowners with illegal weapons who have the police on their payroll?The recent spate of looting – although an example of inexcusable public violence and

criminality - was perhaps not so much about unrestrained thuggery as targeted retribution and intimidation. According to the City Press, “Next to Sea Point, there is a shop owned by a South African. It was not plundered. All foreign-owned tuck shops in Zola North were closed this week.” [http://www.citypress.co.za/news/cops-told-us-loot/] The Sunday Times printed a photograph on their front page of a wall with the spray-painted message “Somalis, hands off our spazas.” [250115]In the meantime, however, poor Soweto consumers who rely on the low prices charged by foreign spaza-owners will have less food to put on their plates. Those renting premises to foreigners may also suffer.
