LUSITO LAND: A FESTIVAL OF HOPE
The Lusito Land Festival is 16 years away from its 50th anniversary – an amazing feat that all started from humble beginnings 34 years ago. The celebrate yet another year, the Lusito Land Association hosted the festival’s pre-opening night on Thursday 23 April at the festival grounds in La Rochelle. The pre-opening was attended by family and friends of the Lusito Association for the Physically and Mentally Challenged as well as the sponsors and the festival. “Here we are again ... after 34 years, the Lusito Land Festival has kept on going,” said the MC in the opening of the event. Having first opened its doors in 1981 as a festival that celebrated the Portuguese tradition and culture, over the years it has evolved into a festival celebrated by the many cultures that make up Johannesburg and Gauteng. More importantly, the festival raises much needed and appreciated funds for the Lusito Land School. “The main reason of the festival is to raise funds for the school,” said Chairman of the Lusito Association for the Physically and Mentally Challenged, Sergio Aquino. “People don’t fully grasp the impact that the
festival and its funds have on the school,” he added. Aquino noted that the Lusito Land Association aims to be as transparent as possible in the public’s eye. “I am humbled and honoured to once again be a part of this great cause,” expressed Deputy Director General, Chief Operations Officer, National Department of Transport Comendador Gilberto Martins. “With each passing year, the difficulties are greater, however we need to think out of the box and carry on with this noble cause. Over the years, the festival has survived and transformed,” added Martins. The festival runs from 24 April to 03 May 2015 at Wemmer Pan at Pioneer Park in La Rochelle in the south of Johannesburg. “This year’s festival promises to be the best one we have ever put on and we have gone all out to make sure that all our visitors have a great time that exceeds all expectations,” said Noemia Contente, spokesperson from the Lusito Association for the Physically and Mentally Challenged. The Lusito Land Association welcomes all to the festival this year and would like to thank all of its sponsors – without them, this festival wouldn’t exist.

The Lusito Land Festival, held annually for the past 34 years at Wemmer Pan in the South of Johannesburg, has added some South African music legends to the line-up on the public holiday on Friday 01 May 2015. Ballyhoo, The Bats and The Essence of Clout will take to the stage to play some of their familiar chart-toppers to audiences, creating some nostalgia for this year’s festival-goers. One of the highlights of the day is the Essence of Clout, where, for the first time in over a decade, two of the original members of the international chart-
topping multi-million-album -selling girl band Clout join forces on stage for a full show. Cindy Alter (lead vocals) and Glenda Sixel (keyboards and backing vocals) will play some of the Clout classics including Substitute and Save Me, as well as a handful of covers from the years that the band took the world by storm and put South African music on the global map. All proceeds from the Portuguese-themed festival go towards the Lusito School for the Physically and Mentally Handicapped. The festival begins on Friday 24 April 2015. Tickets are available at Computicket at a cost of R80 for adults
and teens; and R50 for children (six to 12 years of age) and pensioners. Children under the age of five gain free access. Lusito Land is open from 17:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, 10:00 to 23:00 on weekends and public holidays and 10:00 to 19:00 on Sunday 03 May 2015.

The City of Johannesburg through its partnership with City Power, will be launching the first-to-market solution that will provide the utility with the capability to remotely monitor household energy usage and curb excessive consumption during periods of constrained supply in order to reduce the potential of load shedding. This solution, called Load Limiting, will be done via the 65 000 smart meters that City Power has deployed throughout Johannesburg and it is the first solution of its kind to be implemented in South Africa. Load Limiting allows City Power to accurately determine available supply in relation to consumption in real time, and alerts households that are above the required consumption threshold to cut down on consumption. When fully implemented, this innovative solution allows the City of Johannesburg to avert Stage 1, 2 and partial Stage 3 of load shedding. During load limiting period customers are encouraged to only use essential appliances. The penetration of 65 000 installed smart meter will yield to 153 MW for City Power. City Power will implement Load Limiting in two phases, firstly “on demand” when Eskom issues an urgent notification to municipalities to shed load due to constrained supply. Secondly, where planned load shedding is “scheduled in advance” to reduce consumption and reduce the pressure on the grid. Households will be informed of the daily consumption rate and consumers are expected to adhere to this threshold. In the event of non-compliance, households that don’t comply will be remotely disconnected, thus sparing conforming customers from load shedding. At peak times, which falls between 07:00am and
10:00am and 06:00pm and 08:00pm during weekdays, consumers are encouraged to minimise the number of appliances in use. Energy intensive appliances such as geysers, stoves, pool pumps should be turned off during this time to avoid disconnection. “The City of Johannesburg is South Africa’s financial and business hub that contributes substantially to the country’s GDP. The economic development of Johannesburg hinges closely to the uninterrupted supply of energy to power businesses and households. Through this intervention, we will ensure that we not only keep the lights on for many households, but we help to stimulate the development of Johannesburg and contribute to making the City the preferred investment destination,” says City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Mpho Parks Tau. City Power Managing Director, Sicelo Xulu adds: “We are continuously exploring how the transformative power of technology can enhance security of supply. Load limiting is one of the ways in which City Power strives to ensure that we keep the lights on
during periods of constrained supply. The implementation of smart and innovative technologies such as load limiting showcases our technological capability and leadership, and is indicative of our commitment to help the City to achieve its vision of becoming the world class African City.” Xulu says an extensive educational drive will be undertaken to educate consumers about the new system before it fully implemented. Alongside Load Limiting, City Power has also implemented a system called Ripple
Control which provides the utility with the ability to remotely switch off energy-guzzling geysers during periods when the electricity generating capacity is constrained in order to free up load
and avert load shedding. Ripple Control has already been implemented and it is still being deployed across Johannesburg. Xulu says that through a number of interventions, City Power has freed up additional power which has in turn been fed back to the grid. “Through the implementation of Ripple Control, City Power is able to control approximately 110 MW of electricity, the rollout of solar water geysers around Johannesburg have generated an additional saving of 60 MW in possible power and the Kelvin power station has contributed an additional 150 MW of capacity. We believe that by working together, government, citizen and private sector can develop practical and lasting solutions to the energy challenges facing the country,” Xulu concludes. Executive Mayor Tau added at the launch that this is a partnership between the municipality and the residents of Johannesburg which can succeed by all parties working together. Aspen Nature Estate is piloting the project.

Welcoming a new baby into the world is an exciting and joyful experience for most parents. Deciding on a name for the newborn forms part of the excitement and has probably been a lengthy process of sifting through a wide variety of possibilities.
Finally deciding on a name is not the end of the nam-ing process, however, as the child still needs to be registered with the Department of Home Affairs. The sooner this is done, the better. Registering the baby within 30 days of his birth is ideal. If for some reason you can- n o t complete the registration within 30 days of the birth, though, all is not lost.
One can still register a baby with Home Affairs if the baby is older than 30 days. In such cases, additional information will be required from the parents. Examples of such cases explained on their website are:
• Registration after 30 days, but before one year.• Registration after one year, but before the age of 15.• Registration after the age of 15 years.• Children born outside of South Africa.
Each of the above-mentioned cases will require specifi c and unique forms and documentation. For more information on the process of registering a child, visit the Department of Home Affairs offi ces or www.home-affairs.gov.za or contact Home Affairs General Enquiries on 0800 60 11 90.

Raising a child is hard enough but raising a little bundle with Down Syndrome is sure to be even more of a challenge due to their special needs. It is a chromosomal condition that is associated with intellectual disability and a characteristic facial appearance. It occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21.The syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels. It is said that older
woman have an increased chance of one in 350 of conceiving a Down Syndrome child. In 1910 people with Down Syndrome were expected to survive only to the age of nine (www.ndss.org). Today, due to medical advances, the life expectancy of individuals with this syndrome is much greater. They are becoming increasingly integrated into society and community organizations such as school and work forces.

Fun & Flavoursome
It’s a brand that you know well, and if you don’t then you are sorely missing out! Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant is synonymous with great tasting Portuguese fare that is famous in the South of Johannesburg. Although very familiar with the restaurant, tame TIMES went on down to Calisto’s to chat to Breeze Meyer, General Manager of “the original” Calisto’s Restaurant in Gillview. “Established in 1992 by Jorge Calisto as the sole owner, the brand has grown from strength to strength,” explains Meyer at a sumptuously candle-lit table. At the end of 2011, the Calisto’s Restaurant franchise was born with the opening of the Bedfordview branch, notes Meyer. In 2012, the brand established Senhor Calisto – a fast food outlet specialising in flavourful flame-grilled chicken, seafood, pregos and burgers. In a matter of two years, the take-away franchise has grown to include 19 stores. “Customers came here to the restaurant looking for take- aways and this is where we saw the need to create Senhor Calisto. It has grown rapidly ever since,” says Meyer. In terms of the food, much can be said. “All in all, we do a little
bit of everything,” highlights Meyer. “Our main attraction is our prawns and chicken. Our seafood rice is also a signature dish. Then we also have three sauces – the Calisto’s peri-peri table sauce, Pepe Sauce and Senhora Sauce,” says Meyer. Apart from the tantalising food, the decor at Calisto’s is a sight for sore eyes. “The decor has been collected over the years and creates an authentic, cosy and vibey atmosphere,” says Meyer. Meyer notes that Calisto’s will continue to place an emphasis on world-class service and etiquette, keeping customers happy and coming back for more.

Ballantine’s Finest Whisky’s KICK OFF Footballer of the Season Award’s top eight finalists have been announced. This comes as the result of thousands of public votes, and the public can now support their favourite out of the eight finalists by visiting www.kickoff.com for a final round of voting.Editor of Kick Off, Richard Maguire, says: “The KICK OFF Footballer of the Season
Award, presented by Ballantine’s Finest Whisky, has become one of the measures by which players assess their season – players want to know how they are perceived by the public, and how their personalities have impacted on South Africa’s football fans. It’s as much about performing on the pitch as it is about being an upstanding member of society, and the final eight nominees - as voted for by the public - illustrate this point.
Amongst them we have real leaders, players who continually show fighting spirit and who put the team’s success before their own.”The final round of public voting will take place from now until the awards ceremony on 28 May 2015.Ballantine’s brand manager, Daryl Dixon, adds: “We’re delighted with the overwhelming response from the South African football fan community who voted for their KICK
OFF Footballer of the Season Award Top 8 nominees! These players have certainly left an Impression on all of the fans and they’re all worthy of being named the Footballer of the Season.” Have your say - the eight finalists for the KICK OFF Footballer of the Season Awards, presented by Ballantine’s Finest Whisky are:
