You would think that after the horrific events that have been occurring these past few months, even to the point of having October being labelled ‘Red October’, that a criminal/murderer/rapist/fraudster’s mind would stop to think that perhaps what they are doing is, in fact, incorrect and their actions are igniting anger and bitterness amongst South Africans and it is time to lay low or to just stop entirely.I do not know what is going on with the world, especially, as it is much closer to home, Johannesburg. It is so sad to hear, see and, in a second of bad luck, be unfortunate enough to experience a cowardly act of blinded disregard for human life. Even worse, how it has become a complete norm, with no remorse shown whatsoever.I get so nervous because I do hope to one day have children, walk them down the road to the nearest park and take them to the mall or ocean. How am I meant to do that when all that would be going through my mind would be to watch my back, run at the slightest sign of ‘danger’ and protect my children? Even when I pull up into the driveway at work, I find myself tapping my foot in anticipation, looking around and almost

bracing myself for a face-to-face confrontation with guns and angry robbers, who wouldn’t even hesitate to pull the trigger should I try to reverse in an attempt to get away. If our government doesn’t start implementing stricter, harsher laws and repercussions moving forward, I fear that riots will break out and South Africa fall apart and succumb to rampant violent and inhumane crimes and attitudes. I pray every day for our beautiful South Africa and I do hope that, by some miracle, things turn around for us. When I spoke to a CPF group about the increase in crime as we head to the end of the year, they simply stated that it is ‘that time of the year’. An unfortunate act from humans is to back down when feeling defeated. But is this what we have succumbed to? Accepting and preparing ourselves for murders, rape and being trampled on in our own streets? Why should we? This is not the end and I don’t know about you, but I am not willing to back down. It has to start somewhere, it has to start with us.Have a good week and please, lock up, think twice before going out for a midnight snack and memorise your emergency numbers.

Movember is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year, which raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer and testicular cancer. At the start of Movember men register with a clean-shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache, Mo, raising money along the way to benefit men’s health - specifically prostate and testicular cancer.Prostate cancer is a malignant (cancerous)

tumour (growth) that consists of cells from the prostate gland. Generally, the tumour usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many yearsMale hormones (androgens) make the prostate grow. In young infants the prostate is normally the size of a pea and at puberty it grows to its adult size, which is about the size of a walnut when healthy. The prostate gland can begin to grow under the influence of testosterone around the age of 50 years. The cause of prostate cancer, as in most

cancers in general, is not entirely known. There are, however, some risk factors that can be taken into consideration which are thought to increase the chances of developing prostate cancer.

Age: The disease is less common in men younger than the age of 40 and the risk increases after the age of 50.RAce: There are racial differences across the world, which could be due to social and geographical circumstances. In South Africa, prostate cancer appears to be equally common in men of all race groups.Diet: Studies have shown that certain foods may protect against prostate cancer, including tomatoes, which contain lycopene. Vitamin E, selenium, soy and Omega-6 fatty acids. Dietary factors which may increase the risk of prostate cancer include saturated fat and red or grilled (braai) meat.FAMily histoRy: A man’s risk is higher if a family member, such as a father or brother, has had prostate cancer. Studies show that men with a family history of prostate cancer are likely to present with the cancer 6–7 years earlier than patients without a family history.liFestyle: It is important to maintain a healthy weight and participate in regular physical activity, as it reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer. Prostate cancer usually does not cause symptoms in its early stages. Most men don’t know they have it until it is found during a regular medical exam. These same symptoms can be caused by an enlarged (non-cancerous) prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). An enlarged prostate is common in older men.

the most common symptoms are urinary problems, such as:Not being able to urinate at all;Having a hard time starting or stopping the flow of urine;Having to urinate often, especially at night;Having pain or burning during urination; You have difficulty having an erection; You have blood in your urine or semen; You have deep and frequent pain in your lower back, belly, hip, or pelvis. The screening tests, a digital exam and a blood test to measure Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) are performed by a doctor and the interval is usually a year. Prostate cancer is suspected if any or both of these screening tests are abnormal. At this stage your doctor will refer you for a biopsy of the prostate and the Gleason Score will be given. To decide on treatment for an individual patient, doctors categorise prostate cancers as organ-confined (localised to the gland), locally advanced (a large prostate tumour or one that has spread only locally), or metastatic (spread distantly or widely). The main choices for treating prostate cancer include surgery to remove the prostate gland (prostatectomy), radiation, cryosurgery, hormone therapy, and active surveillance (watchful waiting). Ask your doctor questions so that you can make the best decision about treatment. Your doctor may give you some advice on changes to make in your life to help treatment be successful.Dr tP Mofokeng can be visited at AQh Medical centre, (189 columbine Ave, Mondeor). contact: 011 941 4153*Article supplied by Dr T P Mofokeng.

Personality Assessments (1)

Many factors come into play when going through the process of selecting a candidate for a position within a company. Without the assistance of measures to accommodate the process, it would be an impossible task to select suitable candidates. A company’s success largely depends on the acquisition of the ‘right person for the job’. Unnecessary costs are incurred and productivity lost when a company has to fire an incompetent worker and keep on hiring people with the hope that someone will eventually be able to do the job well. Personality tests measures salient personality traits of an individual. This is relevant as certain personality traits fit certain occupations better than others. An example would be the position of an accountant. Personality traits that would be relevant would be that of a person that easily copes working systematically, structured and with deadlines, as well as making decisions based on rational thinking rather than driven by emotions. For more information please contact the centre on 082 495 8401.

I have decided, after having my daily conversation with myself, to continue the chat of a few weeks ago with the readers of My Head Voice. I titled that piece “Problems present opportunities, Work is action”. The purpose of work, just as a continuation, is to achieve a desired outcome. This week I just can’t stop thinking about the ‘achieve’ in the above definition, perhaps it has something to do with the accolade tame TIMES achieved last week Wednesday night. Whatever it is – achievement is on my mind. Many motivational speakers or writers anchor themselves, and their subjects, in the thinking of winning being an attitude and a state of mind. Now although I do not disagree with this notion, I do believe it goes a lot further than that. The environment where I am, work-wise, has taught me what I believe is the missing ingredient to the ‘attitude’ school of thought.Having the attitude of success can sometimes prove burdensome, especially when you find yourself surrounded by heavyhearted and negative people (which is by the way not the case at tame). I mention this because I have experienced many flames extinguished by this condition. Champions are individuals who, regardless of ‘condition’, push through the pain towards the goal. I believe that the ability to absorb the pain, when activated, is the missing ingredient that enables champions to transcend into a space where nothing else matters more than success. The decision to repeat the 2012 feat of trumping all competition and being announced as the winner of the Best Print Media Award (Ekurhuleni), I remember was taken on the day the 2012 trophy arrived at our office. It’s been many moons since that happened, but looking back it’s difficult for me to identify a week where the conditions favoured our team’s little achievements that ultimately led to the realisation of the aforementioned decision. In fact, I wonder if many even remember; but the point I’m driving towards is that those individual struggles taught us a valuable lesson, which I want to share today. It doesn’t only take believing it can be done, it takes willingness to hang in there, and that’s the action that can sometimes make you feel like you’re giving up your last breath. So attitude… yes, but that’s only the beginning. Vision must inform your attitudes, but those must then activate action so determined that even the ‘conditions’ stand no chance in barring success. Thanks to all our readers for voting for us and for continuing to challenge us to up the standard. As usual, keep those e-mails coming: [email protected]. Whatever your thoughts are, let’s chat.

Haar ouers is geskei.

Carp fishing is a popular hobby that has a long tradition and is growing. Carp are known to thrive in almost any type of water, making them an easy to find and attractive fish to angle for. All fishermen know that no matter what you’re chasing, good angling gear are needed. There might be no piece of fishing gear more important than the rod. If you want a suitable fishing rod for carp, you will want to find one that is at least medium action, and also at least six feet in length. Next is the reel. A good reel for carp fishing is one that is open faced. You don’t want tangles inside a closed face reel. The reel should also be able to hold 130 meters or more of 12 pound test line.Carp tend to like bait as opposed to tackle. While these fish have voracious appetites, they definitely prefer smelly bait to actual plastic lures. More advanced carpers will often use racks with several rods, or “pods,” and set them all up with bait and wait for any carp to show. For carp the absolute “lightest” fishing line you want is 12 pound test line. Heavier line isn’t a bad idea, either.A beginning carp fisher can get all the tackle and gear needed for a fairly inexpensive price. This is a fantastic fresh water fish to pursue, and one that lives up to its reputation as a fighter.

You need:A pair of rounded or pointed pumps, masking tape, a paintbrush, white and neon yellow acrylic paints.

How to: 1 Tape off a cap toe at the front of the heels with masking tape.2 Make sure to press hard on the edges of the masking tape.3 First do a coat of white paint. Let dry for a few hours.4 Then do a couple of coats of yellow paint. To remove the brush strokes that are quite pronounced, wait until the paint is semi dry, and then wet your fingers with water and smooth any lines. This makes a huge difference to the look of the cap toe.5 To reduce the chances of the paint cracking when you take off the masking tape (this can happen when doing multiple layers of paint) and giving you a shaky line (nothing worse), rather than waiting until the paint is completely dry, remove the tape when the paint is still a little moist and then put aside to dry overnight.

Overall victimisation rates (%)

Comparative victimisation rates, 2008 and 2012 (%)

The report has presented the findings of the second sweep of the National School Violence Study conducted in 2012. The first sweep was conducted in 2008. Violence at and associated with schools continues to be common acrossSouth Africa, and the impact on learners is becoming increasingly evident.

Equally evident is the association between violence at schools and violence experienced and witnessed in the home and community – a characteristic that lends credence to the need for a whole-school approach that is embedded in a socio-ecological model of violence prevention

Violence in schools: Know the statistics

Violence in schools has garnered considerable media attention in South Africa in recent years. In the past year alone, local media coverage of brazenly violent acts, which have at times proven fatal, have again fuelled public opinion that school violence in South Africa is escalating at an alarming rate and that something

needs to be done about it.The following are the findings of the National School ViolenceStudy (NSVS) undertaken by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP) in 2012.The study sample comprised 5,939 learners, 121 principals and 239 educators.

In total, more than a fifth of learners had experienced violence at school. To summarise (Executive summary):12.2% had been threatened with violence by someone at school,6.3% had been assaulted,4.7% had been sexually assaulted or raped,4.5% had been robbed at school.Although cyber violence is not confined to any particular physical environment, such as schools, the study results highlighted the relationship between online violence and offline, or more traditional, forms of violence (that is, physical violence). This suggests that cyber violence is just one part of a broader spectrum of violence affecting learners in South Africa. One in five (20%) scholars had experienced some form of cyber bullying or violence in the past year. While concerning, these figures show that cyber violence is not the epidemic that many believe it to be – it is still less prevalent than other forms of school violence.

Elke moontlike ding in daardie kamer is oopgemaak en uitgegooi, uitgetoets of weggedra. She said the GCRO’s research had already helped the Gauteng government to think differently and plan responsibly when drawing up the 25-year Integrated Transport Master Plan, which was published in August 2013.The GCRO was established in 2008 as a partnership between the University of Johannesburg, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the Gauteng Provincial Government, with local government in Gauteng also represented on the GCRO board via SALGA. Behind the motivation for setting up the GCRO is a vision for South Africa’s economic heartland as a region that is competitive, spatially integrated, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. The GCRO is charged with helping to build the knowledge base that government, business, labour, civil society and citizens all need to make this vision a reality. It collects data and

benchmarks the city-region, provides policy analysis

and support, undertakes applied research, and publishes critically reflective academic work.

RESIdENTS INvITEd To CPF MEETINGCPF PaTRollERS NEEdEdCPF needs more patrollers, day and night patrollers, to curb crime. Patrollers are the ‘heart of fighting crime’ due to their visibility; they are present in Bardene, Bartlett, Atlasville, and Witkoppie Ridge. CPF needs financial support for the patrollers in the form of petrol/diesel, 2-way radios, etc. As most of you know, the CPF has started a fundraising drive in the form of the CPF boards and selling advert space on the boards. They have two boards already fully sponsored and approximately 4 boards that are 99% sold, but they need more sponsors.

Gauteng has recently been rocked with various acts of violence and crime in schools.

Over the past couple of months we have witnessed a teacher being sexually assaulted, a teacher being shot in the leg, videos that went viral of a grade 8 Glenvista learner attacking a teacher, the assault of a teen by two fellow pupils at Hoërskool Overkruin in Pretoria, and then the most alarming video of a KZN pupil being stabbed to death. The initial video of the Glenvista pupil who chased his teacher out of the classroom and around the school grounds, while his class mates encouraged him and continued filming, had me disturbed for many reasons. The main reason being the fact that a whole group intimidated a figure of authority. No one attempted to stop the pupil from

relentlessly assaulting his teacher.Similarly, the recent incident in KZN, where a pupil was beaten and stabbed to death by his peers, also raised concerns. To a certain extent I am glad that the incident was filmed, because it shows the inaction of the people. However, I am concerned that the filming does not stop when things get more out of hand than they already have.I believe that the children who were filming the videos are just as accountable for both incidents reaching the peak that they did. Their display of inaction is just as harmful as that of the perpetrators, which to me is highly

disappointing.I am not naïve to think that these acts of violence never took place before, but the various platforms of social media have made it easier for these issues to come to light. When writing about these occurrences I have found that it is easier for the parties involved, ie the school, the GDE, the SAPS, to pass the buck onto somebody else.If we continually try covering up about what is going on in the country, how are we supposed to find the root of the problem? So I pose a question to you, where do you think the issue lies?

Electronic Sensation coming to SA

World famous DJ, Armin Van Buuren has announced the upcoming destinations for his new world tour, Armin Only Intense, which includes the Coca Cola Dome on 14 June. Tickets are on sale from www.bigelectronic.co.za and Computicket. Crowned number 1 DJ of the world five times during his impressive career, Van Buuren kicks off this world tour in Amsterdam to literally travel the world with his crew. This new world tour concept has been inspired by Armin’s latest album, Intense. According to him, Intense embraces more genres than any of his other albums. “It contains cross-overs from progressive to trance and from classical music to rock. I am a perfectionist and some of these tracks have taken me months to finish. I wanted each and every one of those tracks to be perfect. I have incorporated as many as ‘real’

instruments as possible, such as a live orchestra and sounds of the rock band of my brother Eller. It has been a true honour and inspiration to work with such talented artists, singers and songwriters. It has been and ‘intense’ process but I am very pleased with the result.” The new world tour brings a new approach to Armin’s performance. Armin has teamed up with famous theatre director Jos Thie and creative mind Sander Reneman. The two directors have been working intensively with the crew and this resulted in a completely unconventional and fresh approach when it comes to developing an EDM show.Tour itineraryJohannesburg – Presented by

As the country celebrates the renaming of Jan Smuts Airport to OR Tambo International Airport seven years ago on 26 October, learners of Chivirikani Primary School from Katlehong were recently invited to celebrate the airport’s milestone. Leading South African actors Katleho “Dineo Mashaba” Danke, from Generations, and Lehlokgonolo “Niki” Phiri, from Rhythm City, had the opportunity to read stories for the learners. This initiative is aligned with the airport’s support for early childhood development through its social development programme. OR Tambo

International Airport General Manager, Tebogo Mokgoe said, “As a company, we believe that education is the most powerful tool for economic and social emancipation for South Africa. On the special occasion of the airport’s 7th birthday, we wanted to share this awareness with our future leaders.”Speaking to tame TIMES, Phiri said education is important for the country’s young generation. “We have two types of young generation in this country, is those who have access to internet technology and those who do not have access to books but are hungry to learn. Children from Chivrikani Primary School belong to the latter group and they were excited when we read them stories.

These children are being taught in their mother tongue, but when they matriculate that vernacular doesn’t apply anymore. That is my main concern and we should, together as a nation, address that,” said Phiri. The author, Diane Brown said youngsters should continue reading because it is vital if they want to pursue the careers in the field of writing. She said reading will empower children to learn about different people far away from this country in the comfort of their home. Brown said books could help the younger generation to reflect on their lives. “However, our national government, local books stores and local publishers should work hard in supporting and improving local writers. Most of my books are being bought internationally, particularly in the USA and UK. Our industry needs to transform and local writers should play an active role in spearheading that transformation,” concluded Brown.

Last Tuesday was a memorable evening for the Be Your Dream organisation and the seventeen candidates that were awarded bursaries. Anais and her team were given three new vehicles from Hyundai to support their cause.

Be Your Dream is a local project initiated by the ambassador Anais and LifeLine South Africa. It aims to spread awareness throughout the country regarding the services provided by LifeLine and encourage those in need, in effort of empowering and motivating scholars towards positive life stories through the Be Your Dream initiative.

“The suicide rate in South Africa is the highest

during the yearend exams and January, when the results are released,” said Megan Briede, the Director of LifeLine. Their consulting lines are open 24 hours, and they host face to face sessions as well.

The official handover of the vehicles took part at the Boksburg branch at 19:00 on 29 October and featured a remarkable performance by Anais and her acclaimed band. The seventeen students were called up and handed their bursaries to study their dream course.

The marketing manager of Hyundai, Francois Marais said, “We have always been involved in the project, we saw the opportunity and it was a natural fit.” Hyundai has been a proud

sponsor of the Be Your Dream project from the start. Craig Krummeck, the dealer principal, said that the learners have responded and reacted positively to the campaign and they’re very proud to be a part of the entire project.

“The Be Your Dream project has snowballed, the project goes to schools, colleges and churches to spread awareness, because everyone deserves to have their dreams come true,” added Anais, the ambassador of Be Your Dream.

The three vehicles sponsored by Hyundai Boksburg,

East Rand and Airport dealers will enable the project to reach out and visit more schools to teach students about the Be Your Dream initiative.

SA athletes dominate at 5150 African Championship

South African athletes dominated the inaugural Ekurhuleni 2150 African challenge held at the Germiston Lake on 3 November.

Henri Schoeman and Andrea Steyn put in a valiant effort to claim their titles as the 5150 African Champions. From the start, Henri Schoeman was looking strong and ready to put up a fight to claim his title. Schoeman was the first athlete to complete the 1.5km swim with a 2 minute lead over chasers Antony Costes (FRA) and Wikus Weber (RSA).Schoeman took his lead onto the bike and managed to hold the Frenchman off for most of the way. He didn’t lead the entire way though as Costes took the lead around 34km into the bike leg, but Schoeman kept him in his sights all the way until T2. Costes entered T2 in first place but Schoeman was right behind. A quicker transition ensured that Schoeman could exit T2 first and be the first athlete out on the 10km run. Wikus Weber entered T2 in third making up a top three mimicking the swim exit. The young South African kept up the fighting spirit for the duration of the run to come home first in a time of 01:55:30, winning by over 2 minutes. Costes held his second place to finish in 01:57:58. Weber made up the final podium position in 01:58:33.In an exciting race the top ladies fought amongst themselves to claim the 515 African Championship title. The Czech racer Lucie Reed was the first out of the water, coming out in an overall 6th place amongst the men. She was followed by Corinne Berg (RSA) and Andrea Steyn (RSA). However, Reed’s 5 minute lead on the bike didn’t prove to be enough to fight off Steyn’s strong biking and running abilities. With only 10km to play with, Steyn exited T2 and got started with a strong pace. After a big effort on the bike, Reed could not maintain the same momentum on the run while Steyn looked strong. On the second lap of the run Steyn managed to cut the gap and pass Reed before running to victory in a time of 02:09:24. Reed came over the line in 2nd place with a 02:10:31, while Lauren Dance finished third 5 minutes later in 02:15:38.
