Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) CEO Jack van der Merwe addressed guests at the Ekurhuleni Captains of Industry Forum (ECoIF) meeting last Tuesday morning on the benefits of the Metro’s strategic decision to make the area surrounding the OR Tambo International airport in Ekurhuleni a productive and successful hub of tourism and other commercial interests. Van der Merwe explained the aerotropolis initiative was not a project, but rather a process. “Development happens naturally around an airport but if the proper planning and implementation is done, it can have significant benefits for local industry.” He explained the airport connects to over 94 destinations globally, giving the areas in its precinct great reach and potential. “Local businesses need to team together to show South Africa as a compelling place to live, to invest, build a business and thrive,” he said. He said that at the moment the airport was a "transfer point," with people arriving at the airport moving on to other destinations. However, local authorities wanted to make it a destination point, enhancing business, entertainment, education and health facilities to attract guests to the area. He said the Metro had already drafted a five- year plan for the aerotropolis initiative and were currently working on a 25-year plan, to be finalised by the middle of next year. He said ground preparation had already begun, involving transport improvement, identifying land for development, and the improvement of water, power and sanitation facilities. He said the five-year plan would add significant value to the current economy of Ekurhuleni and has encouraged all local businesses to get involved. ECoIF CEO Chris van Biljon explained that the forum and the Ekurhuleni Business Initiative, which is recognized by local government, exists for the purpose of mobilising businesses to work in unity for the improvement of the community. He said constructive action from businesses was required to realize the Council’s vision for hundreds of thousands of jobs to be created through the aerotropolis initiative. “If you don’t have businesses acting constructively, nothing will get done,” he said. Of “Murder She Wrote: “The Tuckshop Mysteries”. Of “What lies beneath (the bunker)”. Waar is al die goeie ou reekse? Toe helde nog helde was en hulle snorre nie afgekom het wanneer hulle gaan swem het nie? Die dae van MacGyver - ‘n ou wat met twee vuurhoutjies ‘n bom kon bou of die A-Team, wie se planne altyd uitgewerk het, al het B.A. Baracus die meeste juwele aangehad wat ‘n bomplanter nog aangehad het? Waar is daardie reekse? “Happy Movember!”

Sarah-Kate Scott, the reigning Mrs South Africa, waved farewell to her family, friends

and fellow South Africans on 8 November as she headed off to two international pageants.

Having rapidly captured the hearts of the South African public and media since her crowning in

August, she is now set to take on the rest of the world as she attends the Mrs World Pageant in the United Sates from 8 to 20 November, culminating in the grand fi nale crowning event on 19 November in Solomons Island, Maryland. Sarah-Kate, who is already a fi rm favourite in the pageant, will be competing with 60 other delegates from all over the world. She will be home for less than a week before jetting off to China to take part in Mrs Globe

on 27 November. Mrs Globe will take place in Shenzhen in China on 6 December.

Sarah-Kate says she is thankful for the opportunities that Mrs South Africa (Pty)

Ltd has given her to represent her country abroad and acknowledges

that it would not be possible without the support of her

husband Darren Scott, who remains in South Africa to

look after their “babies.” Says Sarah-

Kate,“Through our e x p e r i e n c e s ,

Darren and I have come

to realize

that life is short and that it is important to grab hold of opportunities that come our way. Darren and I are committed to each other’s dreams and to raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer through our support of the Cancer Association of South Africa and ‘Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer’ initiative.”They are a couple with a passion to help where they can, a power couple who appreciate the importance of personal growth and approach life united and work lovingly towards securing a legacy their children and, indeed all South Africans, can be proud of.Joani Johnson, Mrs South Africa CEO said: “Sarah-Kate has a fantastic chance of bringing home the crown. South Africans have fallen in love with her and we have every reason to believe that she will draw the attention of the world and that the international judges will be drawn to her charisma and spark.”The expectation that Sarah-Kate will bring home the Mrs World title is so strong that the organizers already have fi rst princess Riana Mooi waiting in the wings to attend Mrs Globe in China, should Sarah-Kate win the Mrs World title. Intense preparations have been made for both competitions, with the best in the industry coming out in support. The designers have been carefully chosen to deliver the gowns best suited to each pageant, with the talented Anel Botha with her feminine designs designing Sarah-Kate’s Mrs World Dress. This draped, Grecian-inspired evening gown has a beaded detail to create a curvy silhouette with its multi-layered slit and open back. This dress consists of silky chiffon, satin chiffon and beaded net.Michael Bezuidenhout has lent his talents to the Mrs Globe gown. The colour chosen by Sarah-Kate is a beautiful ombré, hand-died with the colour graduating from light

to dark. The dress is adorned with Swarovski crystals in exquisite hand-embroidered detail in a design

which gives the effect of a mermaid emerging from the water.Newcomers, great supporters of the pageant “Fearlessly Fashionable” and proudly South

African Fleaq created a traditional gown in a rainbow of vibrant colour, incorporating South Africa’s national fl ower, the Kind Protea.

I have always been one of those people who is not in awe of celebrities and not impressed by a pretty face. Needless to say, when it comes to beauty queens, I’ve always been equally unimpressed - thinking they are nothing but a face and body, which leaves us “normal” women green with envy, while they have nothing much going for them in the brain department. When, however, I sat in the press conference for Mrs SA Sarah-Kate Scott’s farewell last weekend as she headed to the Mrs World Pageant, I had a drastic change of opinion about the women who take part in these pageants.Sarah-Kate is a warm, witty, loving mother and wife who has faced hardships and overcome them. And, most importantly, she is using her position as Mrs SA to help others. However much I still like to make jokes about world peace speeches when it comes to “beauty queens,” it is evident to me now that these women are more than just a pretty veneer.

Owing to the rapidly increasing population of Gauteng, if strategic intervention is not taken to improve the existing transport system over the coming 23 years, by 2037 the average speed of a motor vehicle on Gauteng’s roads could dwindle to just 12km/h.Jack van der Merwe, CEO of Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) presented these staggering statistics at the recent Ekurhuleni Captains of Industry Forum.

He said planning was essential to accommodate the growing population of Gauteng, which by 2037 was expected to increase to 18,7 million from a population of 11,2 million in 2010. The number of residents in the province, he said, was growing by as much as 700 people every day.He said if Gauteng were to remain a powerhouse in the country, three shifts would be necessary in the transport system: from motorised to non-motorised, private to public

and road to rail transport. He said government had developed a five-year plan to address this expected phenomenal growth and was fine-tuning a 25-year plan. New rail systems and bus routes are also on the cards for the Gauteng area. “If we don’t take this seriously, calculations have shown the road could become so congested the average motor vehicle speed will be 12km/h,” he said, “You might have a BMW but you will go slower than a horse-drawn carriage”.

The following arrests and seizures were made from 3 to 7 November:

The case against Thamsanqa Twala, the alleged killer of four-year-old Taegrin Morris, was withdrawn on Friday 14 November at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.Twala was implicated in the hijacking of the Morris family’s Volkswagen Golf in Reiger Park in July. Three men approached the car in which Taegrin, his sister and parents were travelling, and ordered the family out. The boy was caught in his seatbelt and dragged along the road as the hijackers drove off. The car was abandoned in Boksburg.

Twala faced various charges, including murder and hijacking, but for reasons the prosecutor did not share, the case has been withdrawn and Twala was released with immediate effect.Members of the public pointed to the magistrate and prosecutor and shouted from the balcony, “Genoeg is genoeg. By Charity MoyoCharges against Zanokuhle Mbatha, 25, from Vosloorus, who was implicated in the murder of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates Captain Senzo Meyiwa, were withdrawn at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday.According to the magistrate, not enough evidence was found linking the accused to the charges. Mbatha was arrested following investigations by the police that apparently implicated him in the murder of Meyiwa. After his arrest, Mbatha spent days in custody; he appeared in court for the fi rst time on 31 October, when he was remanded in custody.Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus, while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo, on 26 October. Tower of London poppies to be removedHundreds of volunteers last Wednesday began removing the nearly 900 000 blood-red ceramic poppies from an installation at the Tower of London to honour the UK forces killed in World War I. The last poppy was planted by a 13-year-old cadet on Armistice Day last Tuesday, marking the end of the 1914-1918 war when people around Britain held a traditional two-minute silence. The poppies have all been pre-sold for veterans’ charities and will now be dispatched to their owners. Source: iol.co.za

CAPE TOWN: There were several angry exchanges in the National Assembly last Thursday between Speaker Baleka Mbete and the opposition with Members of Parliament (MPs) shouting “you must go” when Mbete began setting time-frames for issues to be debated in the house including the ad hoc committee’s report on Nkandla. Parties demanded that suffi cient time be given to discussing items on the agenda. They demanded to be heard and pandemonium broke out. *ewn.co.za
