On Wednesday 25 June Eskom held an urgent media briefing to address the issue of illegal electricity connections. According to Mihla Khumalo, Ekurhuleni Zone Manager, two children from Daveyton have died this year (one in April and one earlier this month), after they were fatally electrocuted by exposed wires from illegal connections. Eskom has therefore launched an urgent campaign to curb illegal and irresponsible electricity connections.

Khumalo explained the aim of the safety awareness campaign called “Save a future leader- eradicate illegal connections,” saying: “What we are trying to do inside Eskom to try and deal with illegal connections is to embark on public awareness campaigns to inform the public of the dangers of electricity and what illegal connections do to animals and the people who are exposed to them. We’ve lost the lives of two children. We are pleading with the community to assist Eskom in removing and stopping illegal connections,” Khumalo said. According to Khumalo it is very easy to gain access to Eskom’s electricity supply points.

Electricity thieves tap into the network too easily. The issue of illegal connections is a bigger problem in informal settlements, as many do not have the proper infrastructure for electricity. Out of desperation to have basic electricity access, such as lights and television, residents use anything they can find to conduct electricity; even wires. Other residents that may have access to electricity sometimes share electricity via cables and pay the resident supplying electricity a cheaper tariff, rather than buying it from Eskom at the normal rate. Apart from the safety hazards caused due to irresponsible connections, overloading and a loss of revenue at Eskom are also major concerns that affect the whole Ekurhuleni area and areas that Eskom supplies.

The campaign is currently targeting Gauteng, but Eskom aims to expand and create awareness nationwide as soon as they start gaining momentum and community support. Eskom looks forward to partnering with schools, NGOs, media and local residents to help them create safe and legal environments. If you happen to spot an illegal connection in your area, do not try to remove it yourself,

Eskom warns, as it is dangerous. Report illegal connections to Eskom’s toll free crime line 0800 11 27 22, or sms to 32211; or approach your local police station or Eskom office.

This week I was invited to attend a media briefing held by Eskom. They addressed various challenges, such as load shedding. They explained that it is important for residents to understand that load shedding

is a last resort for them, as electricity overloading increases. However, when you find that your load shedding schedule does not match the times when your electricity is off, then it is because of unplanned outages. Eskom cannot foresee unplanned outages and therefore it is not always possible to warn residents in advance. There have been a few residents asking whether the load shedding schedules are correct, due to this fact. We received the schedules from the Ekurhuleni Municipality, who in turn receive them from Eskom. If your power supply does not match your load shedding schedule at all, please notify me, and visit Eskom’s website to report it. I will write more about this in our next edition. In the meantime, have a look at page 2 for more information on community societies to join. On page three we also have a lovely story about a local East Rand resident who won a trip to watch a soccer match in Brazil. Please let me know if you have any news for us to [email protected]

POOWEE toilet tissue is a very delicate brand of toilet paper that is soft, affordable, SABS-compliable and manufactured to suit your pocket and personal needs. Compared to the leading brands, POOWEE’s quality is comparable and very affordable. It is manufactured by Full Circle Manufacturing, where the aim is to deliver very high quality tissue paper, at a cheaper price.

Arnold Goosen and Russell Smith, Directors of Full Circle Manufacturing Industries and co-founders of POOWEE, started manufacturing toilet paper rolls in 2009. Goosen and Smith have been working in the engineering field for years and decided that it was necessary to diversify in order to keep up with economic demands and to make ends meet. Eventually they decided that toilet paper, being a product that everyone needs, would be ideal. “We realised that there is potential in toilet paper; the only problem is that it works on volumes and our machinery at the time was too small. That is when we decided to make it a joint venture,” Goosen explains and the two invested in a larger converting machine. POOWEE offers equally high product standards, but at a compatible price, which gives their product

its competitive edge: “We decided to go for as good quality as the expensive brands, but at a middle of the range price,” Smith says. POOWEE also offers a wide range of options to suit your pocket and personal needs. They offer four toilet tissue options: •Recycled 1 Ply in 10 /24/ 48 pack balers; •Virgin 1 Ply in 10/ 24/ 48 pack balers;•Virgin 1 Ply Economy in 48 pack balers;• Virgin 2 Ply in 10/ 24/ 48 pack balers. In addition, POOWEE also makes use of Indonesian and South African pulp paper, which is collected at the mills. The buyer therefore has the option of purchasing products to suit their budget and preference. Clients purchasing POOWEE toilet paper need not worry about drain clogging, as the structure, while firm, is easily dissolvable in water. At this stage, POOWEE‘s main business is manufacturing toilet paper, so unless you purchase from one of their distributors, or directly from the company, it is not yet available in retail stores. They have direct clients and they are also willing to supply a potential entrepreneur with toilet paper to distribute and sell independently. In this way they are creating jobs and giving others the opportunity to do business. They also supply varieties of kitchen- and folded

hand towels. POOWEE has grown rapidly since its first year; from 1800 rolls a day - they now produce 25 000 toilet rolls per shift. For quality toilet paper that you can afford, contact the POOWEE team today and allow them to show you the definition of quality service. Contact details: 011 824 1244/5 or 082 444 1216; fax: 011 824 1255. E-mail [email protected].

PUNISHMENT FAILED

Punishment is not for revenge, but to lessen crime and reform the criminal - Elizabeth Fry

One of the biggest debates I have had this week has been about the football World Cup which is currently underway in Brazil. Firstly, before I get into it, I have to drop this disclaimer: I know the topic I am about to

discuss touches on one of the three themes you must avoid if you desire to keep your friends – the other two being religion and politics. That said, please hear me out.

During the 2010 World Cup in the dying minutes of a quarter-final game between Uruguay and Ghana, Luis Suarez pulled off an offence so decisive it denied Ghana and Africa its first ever semi-final finish at the universe’s biggest sporting meeting. From the moment Suarez illegally stopped the goalward ball, he instantly became one of the most controversial public figures. From that time there were many debates on how FIFA should have handled the obviously malicious action, and I argue that these debates are

valid, seeing that he has been involved in at least 8 separate illegal incidents – talk about an appetite for controversy. My question is: how effective are the disciplinary measures at the world’s footballing body (FIFA)? I mean, for a repeat offence, Suarez faces the same measure – he repeated the same offence, clearly he learnt nothing. Frankly, his actions show what respect he has for FIFA.My parting question is this: Suarez is a professional, he is an individual so close to the game’s rules he should never err, he knows the consequences of an illegal action and has been subjected to various disciplinary measures - do you think another four months off the pitch will teach him the lesson which

the first suspension (seven league games) failed to? I look forward to hearing some of your responses, but judging by his response to the first biting incident ( "No, I do not regret what happened. Normally I always keep calm but I didn't ... I'm a little tired. This week I had to travel a lot.") I doubt he will learn anything. The better option would be to make a resolute statement against such malicious actions by handing him a lifetime ban.

Let’s chat, let me know what you think about this or any other talking point you think will make for a good discussion. Email [email protected] or send a tweet to @NietoVoice.

Rotary Club of Boksburg held its 77th induction dinner on Wednesday 25 June, when Dana Oosthuizen was named president for the 2014-2015 year.

Former president Terry Phasey was thrilled to pass the title on to his fellow Rotarian, who has been part of Rotary for almost 18 years. Oosthuizen has been elected president of the club before and is thus confident of his potential to make even more of a difference in the community this coming year. Two of his main objectives are to grow club membership and to create awareness about the value of Rotary clubs within communities. During his acceptance speech Oosthuizen

said the following: “Rotarians and guests, it is actually a great pleasure for me to be associated with a small club like the Boksburg Rotary Club and to carry the title of president. All of us are presidents in our own way. I would like to thank past president Terry Phasey, for his two years of service to the club, and for his patience and guidance. I’m going to leave you with this little Albert Einstein message: ‘Try not to become a man of success, but a man of value.’ Terry in my eyes is a man of value, who has shown me the value of listening and working hard. He has helped prepare me for my experience in presidency and for that Terry, the good work you have done, we are going to continue and take it further. … to make a difference in somebody else’s life is one of the most important things that I would like to achieve.”

The Rotary Club of Boksburg would like to expand the club with young, vibrant people who are passionate about helping others. Rotary is an international society that offers its members many opportunities to make a difference, not only within their own communities, but all over the world as well. Both men and women are welcome.

Club members meet every Wednesday at 17:30 to 18:30 at the St Georges Parks Rugby Club. Those interested in membership can phone Jack Gray on 011 849 3547, Peter van Elshout on 0799006212 or Dave Beattie on 0723172188 for more information.

On Monday 23 June the Ekurhuleni Busi-ness Initiative (EBI) members once again enjoyed an informative and productive networking session at the OR Tambo Air-port Protea Hotel.

Kirstin Harris, Digital Media Specialist from Marketing Fanatics, was the guest speaker of the evening and spoke about the value of social media in building your personal or business brand. She referred to popular so-cial platforms, such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Fa-cebook and Pinterest and demonstrated how to use each platform effectively and optimally. At the end of the evening, many prizes were handed out to EBI members. CEO of EBI Chris van Biljon introduced the organisation to the new members at the meet-

ing. He explained that he had founded EBI because he realised after 22 years in the Af-rikaanse Sakekamer that businesses do not communicate with each other and he wanted to address the demand for a proper business networking forum in the Ekurhuleni area, by creating “a platform and environment … where small and medium-sized businesses [could] communicate with each other.”“Where do you start on a Monday morning in your office, in your business with so many people that you can contact face to face?” he asked. “We wanted to do something that would be different: a business-to-business network on the one condition that we met eve-ry week. We decided to register the company name as the Ekurhuleni Business Initiative, and on 15 February 2001 we established the

EBI and we are still run-ning after 13 and a half years,” said Van Biljon.

If you would like to join the Ekurhuleni Business Initiative, please contact Helen Booth at [email protected] for more information.

CAMILLA THE GORILLA: One of the newest members to join EBI is Camilla the Gorilla. She will be the eyes, ears and voice of the Ekurhuleni community.

PRIZE: One of the tame TIMES Directors, Mr Brian Blignaut, receives a prize from Founder and CEO of the EBI, Chris van Biljon, and Marketing Fanatics Managing Member, Amanda Perry.

Do you feel like you live in a whirlwind? Do you rush through each day and collapse at the end of it, knowing that you did not get everything done?Staying on the hamster-wheel leads to burn out, but how do you step off it?

Four tips:• Breathe• Schedule “Me-time”• See a bigger picture and plan for that bigger view• Involve everyone else

BreatheWe do not breathe consciously - which is just as well, as we would probably forget to do it then. The problem is that we have learned to take short-cuts to breathing. The more we rush and stress, the more shallowly we breathe. Try this right now. Breathe in deeply. Feel the air reach your baby toes. Breathe

out. Repeat 10 times. Breathe in love and peace and breathe out all the irritations of the day. It is amazing what a huge difference doing this every day makes, and it really does not take much time. When you feel that you are just not coping, stop and breathe. Make it a habit. It takes 66 days of repetition to make something a habit, or to replace another habit.

Schedule “Me-time”It is important to schedule time just for yourself. We feel guilty when we put o u r s e l v e s first, but the reality is that if we do not put the

oxygen mask on ourselves first, we will not be able to be there for others for very long. Block out some time every week in your diary. It does not have to be a long time. It could be an hour or just 30 minutes. Sit in the garden, go for a massage or read. You could even set a timer so that you do not go over the scheduled time.

See the big pictureIn the whirlwind, we tend to react to the little things and not see the big picture. It is really much easier to spend 30 minutes planning dinners for a week than it is to decide on dinner every day. I like to think of it as building a puzzle. Take the time to find a few pieces and do not react to each piece. Of course we do never think we have time to build a whole puzzle, but this form of planning takes less time than reacting daily to single puzzle-pieces.

Involve othersInvolve everyone around you in your planning and execution. Do you find yourself saying that everything is left to you to do? In the home situation are you the one who makes lunches, decides on dinner, picks up clothes from the floor, oversees homework and does the washing? Your schedule is exactly what you have allowed it to be. So long as you pick up the clothes off the floor and empty the lunch tins – your children will not have to. Call a family meeting. Decide who will be doing what and if they do not do it, then let everyone live with the consequences. It will not be long before everyone steps up to their responsibilities. If you are like this at work too, change it. Did these tips work for you? I would love to hear from you.Colleen Qvist is an Empowerment Coach and Speaker and can be contacted on [email protected]

A vehicle tracking signal led EMPD Benoni Precinct officers to a house in Benoni where they found a stolen BMW in the process of being taken apart by three male suspects. Two other vehicles found on the premises were also confirmed to be stolen. One of the suspects was found with a firearm for which he could not produce a licence, as well as cash amounting to R13 000. The raid took place on Friday, 20 June at around 16:30.

Over and above the stolen BMW with a Sophiatown police case number, Metro Police officers also found

a Mazda Sedan and a Toyota Tazz, which were both confirmed as stolen.

The three men, all in their early forties, were arrested and charged with being in possession of stolen vehicles.. An additional charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm was filed against one of the suspects. The three suspects are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.

After Ekurhuleni Metro Police Germiston Crime Prevention Task team members received information that occupants of a silver Opel Corsa was brazenly plying their illegal drug trade in Witfield, Boksburg, Metro Police officers monitored the suspected vehicle for three days.

They familiarized themselves with the faces of the suspects in the Opel Corsa, observed the points where the suspects met their clients and witnessed a couple of transactions

taking place in Van Schalkwyk Street, Witfield. One of the suspects in the Opel Corsa was followed to a flat in Boks-burg North where drugs were found on both him and his flat-mate. Both were arrested, and cat and crystal meth with an estimated street value of around R4000 were seized.A case of possession and dealing in illicit substances was registered at Boksburg North police station. The pair, who are in their late twenties, are expected to appear in the Boks-burg Magistrate’s Court soon.

BUST : The drugs, the suspects and their vehicle

On 24 June at around 09:00, two men entered a cellphone shop in Main Street, Witfield in Boksburg North, pointed a firearm at the owner and tied him up with wire.

They took all the cellphones in the shop, a DVD player and an amplifier and ran away on foot. Constable Frans Ledwaba, who was alone doing his sector manager visits in the area, was immediately alerted by the owner running from his shop. The constable did not have time to wait for backup and pursued the two men on foot. He apprehended them not far from the shop. Ledwaba pointed at them and ordered them to stand still; whereupon the one suspect ran away, but the other one stopped and turned around, preparing to draw his firearm from his pants. Ledwaba, however, was too fast for him and fired two warning shots, at which the suspect dropped his firearm and lay down.He was arrested and all the stolen goods were recovered. Constable Ledwaba also recovered the stolen firearm.

By Joy Kearsly

I am English…Languages are not my strong point. I took Latin at high school for four years, always did badly in the simplest vocabu-lary tests and blanked out at the declen-sion of verbs.

I flunked French and took Spanish for a year but never remembered more than how to greet people and count to ten. The only language I shone at was English and that is probably only because I have been speak-ing it since the age of two. Now, in 1976, I was in a country where Afrikaans was an official language. People told me it was like Flemish or Dutch, which was no help at all, seeing that I had not one word of either. Anyway, I thought, if you meet an Afrikaner,

just do what English folk abroad do all the time; speak English loudly and slowly and they will be bound to understand!Fortunately, most of the Afrikaans-speaking people I met in the first few months of my life in South Africa could speak at least some English because they learned it in school as a second language. However, that does not mean I did not make some mistakes, to bring home the fact that I was not native to the country. Seeing a sign for ‘Roomys Ice Cream’ had me thinking that ‘Roomys’ was the name of a company that made ice-cream. During the first week I du-tifully wrote to my family telling them that we were living in “Boxberg,” and that I had found out that the café on the corner was not a small restaurant, as I supposed, but a grocery shop.Continue reading Joy’s story on www.tame-times.co.za

*A message from Boksburg North SAPS:

Boksburg North SAPS is appealing to community members to take good care of their children. They also want the public to know that missing persons must be reported to them as soon as possible – there is no waiting period. Parents of missing children are asked to call their nearest police stations immediately to report the matter. They must then go to the police station with a recent photograph of the missing person and complete an SAPS 55 form.

The police are the ones best equipped to find out what has happened to a missing person who has possibly become a victim of crime, may be an unidentified body or a casualty in an accident, or might have been arrested.

Parents should be aware of where their children are at all times. If they leave them with friends, they should make sure they know who they are and that they are responsible. Parents must educate their children not to talk to strangers or to take anything from them. They should also make sure their children are always

accompanied by a grownup or responsible person.Boksburg North SAPS would also like to make a special appeal to parents to remember that their children are their responsibility and no-one else’s and should not be left unaccompanied at malls or shopping centres. The SAPS are concerned about the many youngsters browsing malls or shopping centres without supervision who are vulnerable to criminals, especially when walking and talking, or texting, on their cellphones.

I have been inundated with calls and emails from Gauteng motorists who have been stopped at various roadblocks. Mo-torists have shared their experiences with me of how they have been intimidated and threatened by SANRAL and traffic of-ficials. Motorists were being intimidated and threatened into registering with e-tolls.

This is simply illegal and criminal. Motorists must not be intimidated in any way. There is no compulsion and no legislation to force anyone to sign up to e-tolls. In any case, if such legislation were to exist it would not pass constitutional muster. It is clear that SANRAL is desperate to in-crease its e-toll subscriptions. It also is des-perate to improve its income as clearly the peaceful resistance campaign by the public is working.

I am writing to SANRAL CEO, Nazir Alli re-questing to meet him to discuss this most concerning matter. If stopped at one of those roadblocks and made to feel uncomfortable, you should ask the officer to produce his/her certificate of ap-pointment and take note of his/her name and traffic authority he/she works for. The officer is obliged to identify him- or herself. Should the officer refuse to do so, simply take note of the registration number of the official vehicle on site. Officials may not make enquiries into e-tolls and whether one is registered or not. Nothing obliges one to respond to these questions. Do not be intimidated!

The Media24 board and management team express their profound sadness at the sudden passing of Professor Russel Botman (60), who died at his home this past weekend. Professor Botman was a highly regarded member of our board whose quiet authority and sharp intellectual and philosophical insight into the role and strategic course of Media24 were deeply valued. On top of it, he was just such a lovely man. His death, so shortly after the passing of Professor Jakes Gerwel, our previous chairman, comes as a double blow for Media24. Professor Botman served as a director of Media24 since April 2005. He and his wife, Beryl, had close ties to the company. In particular they supported Kuier magazine’s community education projects and for a long time Beryl, who is an education specialist, answered learners and parents’ questions in a regular column in Kuier called Vra Beryl. Kay Karriem, Kuier’s editor, said it was an honour for the magazine to have been able to “tell the family’s story” and that she would always remember the warm welcome the team received into their home. Media24 chair Professor Rachel Jafta, who knew Prof Botman well, both as a fellow board member

and a colleague at the university, conveyed her deep sadness at his passing. She will remember him as a peacemaker, always opting for reconciliation rather than confrontation, and will never forget his “respectful, warm and approachable nature and delightful sense of humour”. Professor Botman was rector and vice-chancellor of Stellenbosch University since 2007 and was re-appointed for a second five-year term in 2012. During his early career he made his mark as a church leader and champion of socio-economic rights. He served as dean of the University of the Western Cape’s theology faculty before joining Stellenbosch University in 2000 where he was vice-rector of the Centre for Teaching and Learning until 2007. He served on many boards and was the motivating force behind the university’s HOPE Project which drives its transformation and positioning in the 21st century. Under his leadership Stellenbosch University has made three rankings of the world’s top universities. We have lost a true mentor and role model. Our thoughts are with Beryl and their children. We will miss him. Esmaré

The winners converged on the Intercontinental Hotel on Sunday 15 June for a send-off party before taking to the skies, arriving in Sao Paulo the next day and then embarking on a five-hour journey to Manaus. The four winners and their partners had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stay in a 5-star hotel in Manaus, experience the “meeting of the waters,” swim with pink dolphins, tour the Amazon and fish for piranhas. The crowning moment of the trip was attending the live soccer match between Cameroon and Croatia, at the Arena da Amazonia stadium.Speaking to tame TIMES, Anitha, who has since returned to South Africa, described the excitement of all the winners.“For me this trip was made up of a combination of firsts; before this I had never won anything, I had never been out of the country and I had never experienced watching a soccer game live a stadium,” said Anitha.“Firstly I didn’t even know the Hyundai was running this competition when I test-drove their i10. Soon after the test drive, I received a call informing me that I was shortlisted for

a chance to win this trip. I never made much of the information because I had never won anything. It was only when I received a call from 5fm’s Sureshnie Rider that things became real and the excitement set in,” she added. “Arriving in Brazil we were received very warmly, there was no time for one to be bored, our activity calendar was packed, from tours around the country and experiencing the culture of the country there was so much to take in. When the day of the game arrived and we arrived at the Arena da Amazonia stadium, the atmosphere was electric and reminiscent of the vibe we experienced here in 2010,”said a still excited Anitha.Unfortunately for the South African group, Cameroon lost the game 4 – 0 to Croatia, but being there and being part of the spectacle was, according to Anitha, more than enough.

On Saturday 21 June, Imperial Nissan East Rand Mall held a fun day at their dealership. Car-lovers were afforded the opportunity of buying vehicles at especially low prices and there was also a variety of popular vehicles on show. A unique display of three generations of Nissan models at the dealership included the Datsun SSS 1600, the Nissan 300 ZX with twin turbo and the Nissan GTR twin turbo. One of the vehicles that also captured everyone’s attention was the yellow and

black Golf 5 GTI. This vehicle was no ordinary Golf: it was pimped up with four amplifiers, four 12-inch sub-roofers and four sets of six-inch splits. In total, the sound system of this car was worth about R130 000. While the adults were admiring the wheels, the children enjoyed face paints, balloon magic, jumping castles and music. The purpose of the fun day was in part to raise funds for purchasing winter blankets for the less fortunate - a few blankets had already been donated at the fun day.

Businesswomen of tomorrow have been given a unique insight into the daily functioning of internationally-recognised manufacturing and engineering company DCD Group, which has now participated in the annual Cell C Take A Girl Child To Work Day initiative for the third consecutive year.

The Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day has made a difference in the lives of over 600 000 female learners across South Africa since it was established ten years ago. The day is celebrated annually in May, and involves companies opening their doors to young girls to allow them to experience different industries and work environments. The 2014 theme was ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve'. DCD Rolling Stock head of HR Anli van den Berg reveals that the Vereeniging-based operation hosted 20 female students from the Oosrand Secondary School in Boksburg on Thursday 29 May, 2014. “DCD Rolling Stock accommodated ten Grade 11 and ten Grade 12 pupils. In total, nine of the company’s 11 business units accommodated 100 girls. This is a measurable increase from the DCD Group's first participation three years ago, when we hosted just 20 girls in total,” she explains. According to van den Berg, it is important

for businesses to participate in initiatives such as the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day, as it allows young girls to realise the numerous career opportunities that are available to them besides office and administrative work. “We want to open up all platforms for the schools and show the girls what careers are available. DCD has a female worker who started as a cleaner, and has since qualified as a welder and is now working in the factory,” she adds.

Several students from the Oosrand Secondary School stated that they enjoyed the day and found it interesting. One student said: “We learnt a lot of things that we did not know before coming here. We also learnt about the different functions of DCD, as well as what opportunities are available in this industry. It was educational and fun.”

Van den Berg notes that women have stepped up within the DCD Group and are now filling roles that were previous filled only by men. “There have been several enquiries by some of the girls about trade industries, such as boiler-makers and welders. What's more, several girls are currently completing their third year of training with DCD to become welders. By participating in the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day, we aim to help female students realise their dreams,” she concludes.

The nominees for The 4th Annual South African Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards® (CCA’s) were announced on 25 June at Parker’s Comedy Club at Montecasino. When Mark Banks was announced at the recipient of the CCA’s Lifetime Achiever award, one very dramatic and totally bonkers scene was provided by Banks with him exclaiming, “I am only 55 years old!”

If you fancy seeing a panel of “grill masters” hurl comedic insults and downright abuse at him, book your tickets from the venue. The Savanna CCA ceremony takes place at The Teatro at Montecasino on 2 August. It is a hilarious variety show, comprising sketches, stand-ups, impressionists and witty one-liners delivered by South Africa’s top comedians.

The World of Dogs & Cats & Pet Expo (WODAC), Complete Dog Food and Ford Motor Company, are calling upon animal lovers in Gauteng to help them break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the most pet food collected in a seven day period.

The aim is to collect a minimum of 20 tons of pet food from 14-20 July, in order to break the prevailing record of 15 tons convincingly.“Animal shelters across the country look after scores of loveable pets in need of a good, nutritious meal while they await adoption. So apart from being a fun opportunity for Gauteng residents to contribute to a Guinness World Record attempt, donors can draw inspiration from the fact that the real goal behind this initiative is to collect as much pet food as possible for donation to participating animal welfare organisations,” said Henk Jutte, managing director of Complete Dog Food.Animal lovers, and those who want to be part of a bona fide Guinness World

Record attempt, are asked to drop off their donations at participating Ford dealerships in Gauteng, from 14-20 July and at WODAC, which runs from 18-20 July at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. Gavin Golightly, Marketing Manager at Ford South Africa, added, “Many people see their pets as part of the family, and offering cars that allow people to travel with their furry friends is something we at Ford are very proud of. With several pet-friendly vehicles in our range, Ford started exhibiting at WODAC last year, and is doing so again this year.”In keeping with the spirit of generosity and fairness that characterises this Guinness World Record attempt, members of the public will decide, via a Facebook Challenge, how much of the donated food gets distributed to each of the approved animal welfare organisations. “It’s only fair that if you’re donating the food, you should get to decide who gets how much of it,” explained Brian Blades, Managing Director of WODAC.

“To have your say, go to the Facebook Challenge and cast your vote for the organisation of your choice. The challenge will run from 2 June to 20 July and the percentage votes for each shelter will determine their share of the food.”The grand weigh-in, of what will likely be a mountain of pet food, will take place under strict supervision at the World of Dogs & Cats & Pet Expo (WODAC) on 20 July 2014.

The welfare organisations that currently stand to benefit from this drive include Kitty and Puppy Haven; Animal Ambulance; Animal Anti-Cruelty League; Animals in Distress; Barking Mad; FORA; Wetnose; SPCA Springs; Mdzananda Animal Clinic; Santa Cause for Paws; Woodrock Animal Rescue; Hellen White; Angels Refuge; Claw; SPCA Benoni; Animal Instincts; Pet Save and Purr Paws for life. Civil rights organisation AfriForum has instructed its legal team to prepare an official complaint against the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and its racial quota system, which will be submitted to the International Rugby Board (IRB).

The possibility of opening a case with the International Court for Arbitration in Sport will also be investigated. AfriForum is taking these steps in reaction to the news that SARU President Oregan Hoskins had instructed the Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, that race should play a bigger role in the selection of the Springbok team.According to Kallie Kriel, AfriForum CEO, IRB rules prohibit explicitly any form of racial discrimination and political interference in rugby. "SARU's instruction to the Springbok coach is a crude form of racial discrimination and an indication that SARU has surrendered to the quota threats of the

Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula," Kriel said. Kriel pointed out that it was not in the interest of South African rugby, players or the supporters of the sport when SARU blatantly contravenes the rules of the IRB. In terms of Bye-Law 3 of the IRB rules and regulations, the IRB is compelled to prevent any form of racial discrimination in rugby. Regulation 20 also determines that any action in rugby which entails racial discrimination amounts to "misconduct". In terms of bye-law 9.4(r) the IRB may institute disciplinary steps against any rugby body that violates these rules.According to Kriel AfriForum supports rugby development, and wants everyone to have the opportunity to participate in the sport. "A racial quota system disadvantages all talented players of all races. White players are disadvantaged because they are excluded from participation based on their race and the validity of the inclusion of black players in teams is by default suspect," Kriel added.

The euphoria of whitewashing the ever-improving Scotland Thistles will not cloud the SPAR Proteas' realization that they need to raise the bar if they want to be classed in international netball circles as serious medal contenders at next month's Commonwealth Games in Scotland. The SPAR Proteas wielded the whitewash brush to good effect as they ran out 46-33 third Test winners over Scotland’s Thistles at the Bellville Velodrome, in Cape Town, on Saturday 21 June. Earlier in the series the Proteas beat the Thistles 56-29 and 41-25. The Proteas will be off to next month’s Commonwealth Games with loads of confidence in their ranks. The South Africans' series win means they step up their International Netball Federation (INF) world standings from sixth to fifth position behind Jamaica, England, Australia and pace-setters New Zealand. South Africa has been drawn in Pool B for the Commonwealth games, along with England, Australia, Trinidad &Tobago, Wales and Barbados.Speaking after Saturday's third Test in Bellville, Proteas head coach Elize Kotzé said the three

Tests over as many days helped her identify the areas her side needs to work on in the run-up to the Games."We now have a good idea of what we need to do in training before we start playing in Glasgow. We were very well tested by a Scotland side that showed improvement every time they played," said Kotzé. "It was a wonderful opportunity for the squad to take to court and test our combinations. I'm happy with the way the newcomers came through the matches and they all did very well."The back-to-back wins over three consecutive days have instilled a fresh bout of confidence in the Proteas' ranks. It was equally morale-boosting because the 12th-world-ranked Thistles has already defeated South Africa's Pool B competitors Trinidad &Tobago and Wales earlier this year. When the Scottish contingent arrived in South Africa a few days ago, there was always a hint that the Thistles were a better side than their 12th-world-ranking would suggest, more so after their giant-killing wins over higher ranked countries like Wales (8), Trinidad & Tobago (10) and Northern Ireland (11).

Hy is egter by die 0/21
