Sleeping thief caught

On 4 December at 07:00 Fox Reaction Officers conducting crime prevent patrols in the Brackendowns area made an interesting discovery.At the corner of Sand and Tugela Streets in Brackendowns they found an abandoned truck without a load. The truck’s registration number was checked and it was confirmed that the truck, which was carrying a full load at the time, was stolen from its depot in Mayfair JHB at 01:30 that morning.The crime scene was handed over to the Brackendowns SAPS.

On Sunday 30 November at 03:00 Fox Reaction officers responded to an alarm at Jim Fouche Road in Verwoerd Park. On entering the premises the Reaction Officers noted three suspects jumping over the fence of the house and found one suspect lying, sleeping and shirtless, on a couch in the lounge. They ascertained that the suspects had used a glass cutter to remove the window of the home’s entertainment area, but only the sleeping suspect was arrested for house-breaking and detained at Alberton SAPS. The other three escaped.

Merry Christmas for needy kidsLast week Carnival City and the Afrisun East Rand Community Trust spread festive love and cheer among young children from underprivileged communities in Ekurhuleni. Some 350 children, aged between six and 12 years old, from various East Rand based orphanages were treated to a grand-scale Christmas party on the soccer fields behind the Carnival City complex.The field was transformed into a fantasy waterworld complete with boat rides, castles, a foam pit and a water slide. There were also other outdoor games and entertainment, including face painting and interactions with visiting clowns.A couple of celebrities, including the King of Kwaito, Anaconda, dropped in throughout the day to surprise the children. But the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the visit by Santa and Mrs Claus, who came bringing gifts. According to Carnival City’s Godfrey Madonsela, this was the 8th annual Christmas party that Afrisun East Rand Trust and Carnival City have hosted for orphaned children in Ekurhuleni. “It is a great privilege for us to partner with the Afrisun East Rand Trust to host a Christmas party for young orphaned and neglected children from local communities. It gives these young children a chance to

feel the love, joy and merriment that should surround them at this time of year.“For many of them, the gift they receive at our party is the only one they will get this Christmas. It is tremendously heartening to see them playing carefree and their faces light up when Father Christmas arrives. Carnival City is enormously appreciative of the support and sponsorships that help make the event possible,” said Madonsela.

On 3 December I got off a taxi in Pieter Uys Avenue in Alberton and started walking home. I noticed a man around 60 years of age walking fast on the opposite side and he crossed over to my side, touched my arm lightly and went past me. I looked on my arm and noticed that he had smeared some muti on my arm. I panicked and suddenly by my side there was another man almost the same age as the previous one, who suggested we must report him. He flagged down a car with two male occupants inside, one of whom flashed a police ID and said I must get into the car so that we could follow the man who put muti on me. I suddenly wondered why it was such a coincidence that an unmarked car with

a policeman inside it was right there and started walking away. The guy who wanted to help was the first to get into the car and I refused. They made a U-turn and when I was some distance away I stopped and saw them picking up the first guy who was already waiting at the robots. He did not offer any resistance and I realized they were working together. So, people out there, beware these holidays and do not send out kids alone on errands - just in case they get into trouble.Unfortunately I got so confused and failed to get the car’s make and number-plates, but it was a gray sedan. I thank God Almighty for protecting me or I would have become another missing person s tatistic.

It was with interest that I read the Brackenhurst resident’s dilemma under the heading – FINAL NOTICE DILEMMA that appeared in tame TIMES 25 November 2014. Like this resident, I also received a final notice last month. I went into Ekurhuleni offices to collect a hard copy of my current account as I prefer to pay what I see on paper and do not trust the figures appearing on the SMSes received. On this occasion I questioned the issue of final notices and informed the attendant that circumstances do not allow me to pay on the 25th of the month. He referred me to counter 8. The male individual in attendance was not sure what I was on about and redirected me

back to where I had received my account from. I told him I was not prepared to rejoin the long queue again.He called a second male individual. Between them in their language, I assumed they were discussing my dilemma. They appeared like two jokers and took my particulars on a scrap of paper and assured me that, as I was a pensioner, the due date for payment of my account would be recorded as the 1st of the month. I was rather sceptical and asked him if he was sure that he would process my request as such.Guess what? I received a tiny print of my full account sent by sms on 25 November 2014, still reflecting the due payment date as the

25th of the month. What does one do now? Do these employees of EMM enjoy sowing confusion among the ratepayers or are they just uneducated and pretending to be know-it-alls?I took note of the Official Comment from Ekurhuleni stating that the communication telephone number receives a high call volume, hence there is overloading. Who are they kidding? One cannot get through to ANY of the EMM telephone numbers whatsoever. Simple solution: install more telephone lines and employ proactive people in the call centre. If the employees work a little faster, walk a little faster, stop gazing into their computer

screens as if they are trying to comprehend what is gazing back at them and stop the idle chatting, then the system could operate just a little faster.It was also noted that 3 to 4 days after the 25th of the month are allowed for payments before final notices are issued. What happened to the 7-day grace period? Was this change also instituted without informing the ratepayers?In conclusion, may I add that not everyone has the luxury of having access to the website and relies solely on the telephone and cellphone, nor do they have the means or ability to drive frequently to the EMM offices to sort out discrepancies?

Turkey again for Christmas? No thanksForget turkey. Duck is the new Christmas cuisine choice: Johan’s Pan-Seared Duck Breast with a Festive Red Wine and Honey Sauce, Cherries flambéed in Vodka. Pink Fir Potatoes fried in Duck Fat and Sugar Snap Peas.

Recipe:Using a very sharp knife. Cut vertical lines 1 cm apart on the skin side of the duck breast. Be careful not to cut into the flesh. Now do the same horizontally. Rub sea salt into the skin. This will help make it crisp.Set aside.Boil the potatoes until you can stick a fork in them. Do not over boil. Pit the cherries and set aside.Chop an onion, carrot and celery. Add this to a pot with a little olive oil. Cook till the onions are translucent. Now add a clove of garlic. Add one cup of chicken stock and reduce. Now add a bouquet garni. Add half a bottle of wine into the pot (drink the rest). Add cloves and star anise and bring to the boil. Let the wine reduce by half. Add 2 tablespoons of honey. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Strain the wine through a sieve. Add strained liquid back to pot. Add a mixture of butter and flour (a tablespoon) to the liquid and whisk until it thickens. The sauce should cover the back of a spoon.Add cherries to another pan with a bit of sugar and

flambé with vodka. Set aside.Switch on the oven to about 200˚C.Put a pan on high heat on the stove. Add the duck skin side down. Don’t add any oil. The duck fat will start seeping out. Tilt your pan to the side and use a spoon to collect the fat. Spoon the fat over the top of the duck. Continue doing this for about 5 minutes. You are basting the duck in its fat.Turn the duck and put the pan in the oven for 3 minutes.Add olive oil to a pan and flash fry the sugar snaps.Take the duck out of the oven and set aside to rest.Put the pan with the duck fat back on the stove.Squash the potatoes with the palm of your hand and fry in the duck fat till golden brown.Plate the potatoes and sugar snaps. Spoon the sauce on the plate. Carve the duck into 1cm slices. Place the duck on the sauce and the cherries on the duck. Garnish with micro leaves.

South African teacher Pierre Korkie, who had been held captive in Yemen for 19 months, was killed one day before his family was informed that he would be released and home in time for Christmas.US President Barack Obama said he authorised a raid to rescue US photographer Luke Somers, who also died during the failed raid.According to Gift of the Givers, who helped rescue Pierre’s wife, Yolande Korkie in January, said that all logistical arrangements were in place to safely fly Pierre out of Yemen

under diplomatic cover, then meet with family members in a safe country, fly to South Africa, and directly to hospital for total medical evaluation and appropriate intervention.

Anas Hamati, Gift of the Givers’ Project Director for Yemen, told BBC’s Newshour: ‘’His passport was ready, everything was ready. In that time,

the attack happened by US special forces in Yemen and that has destroyed everything.’’Our sincerest condolences to the Korkie family and everyone involved in trying for months to secure Pierre’s release.

Brackenhurst Bowling Club hosted a major District Fund Raising day known as the “Rosebowl” on Sunday 7 December.

Sixty teams took part, playing bowls at the three bowling clubs in the Alberton area. The players gathered afterwards to have lunch and a prize-giving at the Brackenhurst Club.This past weekend was about more than just bowls at Brackenhurst

Bowling Club. On Saturday, the club hosted a great number of children for a Christmas party. They had everything from face

painting to a magic show before lunch, having fun on the jumping castles while they eagerly waited for Father Christmas to arrive. Tame TIMES wants to congratulate them on a successful weekend, all for a wonderful cause. May you have a blessed year ahead.

The Alberton Swimming Club has a rich history stretching back to the club’s founding in 1952. The club is affiliated to Central Gauteng and, through this body,

also with Swimming South Africa.

The club’s m a i n f u n c t i o n

is to develop and

promote swimming in the Alberton area, offer swimming as an alternative sport choice and identify

talented swimmers. Over the years they have found many such

individuals, not only in swimming, but in related

sports like Lifesaving, Biathlon,

Triathlon and Water Polo.Coach Chantelle Freitas is in the driving seat of the club for her second year. A member of the club eight years ago when the previous coach Clive Cox was still practising, her history with the club has given her a special love and empathy for it.The club, which has been based at the Alberton swimming pool since its inception, has seen several great swimmers come through its ranks. In particular, Chad le Clos was a member of the club in his young days. The club currently has 26 members aged between 3 and 15 years. In the past year, 11 new members have joined.The club provides competitive training to members up to level 1. Swimmers are also entered into swimming galas because of the club’s connection to Central Gauteng. The club has a free gala every Wednesday at 18:30 when swimmers can come and take their times to track their own progress.
