MEMORIES OF UPSBy Lorelee Parker

I didn’ t begin college on apilgrimage. I wasn’t searching to findmyself nor the meaning of life. ButUPS had a way of altering previousvalues and perspectives by challengingme to question them.

I was one of those rare birds whodeclared a major when enrolling as afreshman. I knew those things which

In a word, it was UPS. Not UPS solely asan institution, but as an entity. I pictureUPS as a collage, a metamorphosis of people, places, and events which melded into thelast four years. The Pacific Rim program,ASUPS, the sororities and fraternities, professors who shared their lives, staff whohelped to organize the paper work andnumerous details, and of course the closefriends, where all a vital part of this picture.

However, what will I carry away andtreasure in the years to come? Speculating,I envision that the lessons from and thefriendships of my professors will remainclose to the heart. Not only did professorsoffer new ideas, but they provided the

encouragement and positivesupport towards whateverdirection I may take in theyears ahead. They are aunique breed who love theirparticular specialty and hopethat students also canappreciate their endeavors.Yet these "sacred" subjectsand resulting values arepermeable, and altereddramatically in the lives ofseveral professors over thelast four years. Even they aresubject to the questioningaspect of the University whichrequires constant challenge ofthe norm. Professors change, the University changes, andwe, the students change.

Furthermore, I foreseethe strong friendships madewith peers remaining

throughout life. Weexperience both fun andtrying times. Pizzas ordered, movies seen, weekend trips toSeattle, evenings at the EngineHouse, and of course, brain -storm sessions abouthomework assignments allassured frequent , if notconstant, contact.

Ah yes, the past fouryears of UPS. Memorable. Aperiod with a character all itsown and an era which, sadly,I'll never have again. ^

The

underclass

members at the University of Puget Soundshare a variety of interests, from movies to colors andeverything in between. We have definite ideas about what'shot and what's not, but one thing can be said about all of us -you could never call us boring.

Restricted to a rather stiff budget (at least most of us are),and without that much free time on our hands, we've learnedthat it's important to make whatever time you have to yourselfcount in both monetary and quality terms; therefore, we'vebecome creative. It seems unanimous that our first choice, toppick, favorite activity is and will always be a good party:anywhere, just about any time, with just about anyone("What's college for if you don't meet new people?") Thisleads us to the question with more answers than just about anyother. "What kind of music do we want to listen to?" If youattended many parties this year, or even just listened to sometapes with a good friend and a good pizza, chances are youheard and liked everything from the Beastie Boys to Billy Idol.Def Leppard,U2, and Tracy Chapman were definitely in thespotlight as well as some perennial favorites like Journey,Depeche Mode,Billy Joel, the Cure,Chicago, and OMD. Andif you were in the mood for a late-night philosophicalconversation with some New Age jazz like George Winston,Michael Hedges,or Shadowfax.

If you had transportation and could afford to make it to anactual movie theatre, you probably saw such favorites asBeaches.Rainman.A Fish Called Wanda. Accidental Tourist.Scrooged. and Working Girl. If you couldn't afford to go tothe theatre, but you had access to a VCR or drifted down toCampus Films on the weekends, you most likely watched

movies like D.O.A.. Secret of Mv Success. Roxanne. DirtvDancing.Predator. Lethal Weapon, and Hoosiers.

Other favorite pass times and hobbies of the undergradsincluded: eating out ("anything to avoid SUB food or myroommate's cooking") at such Tacoma hot spots as FlakeyJake's, Red Robin, Thai Gardens, and the Antique SandwichShop, or if you could afford it, Shennanigan's, Stanley &Seafort’s,Grazie, and Calzone's; driving down the 30th streethill and along the waterfront;midnight runs to Dairy Queen;weekend trips to Canada, the coast, Portland, or just aboutanywhere within a five hour radius of Tacoma; games ofUltimate Frisbee; games of volleyball; games of mud football;any games involving dangerous bodily contact; month-longstints of Dungeons & Dragons involving 50 or more people;tennis; racquetball; swimming; golf; hanging out in theCellar; staring at video games in the Rendezvous; watchingsoap operates between classes; late-night mash sessions, earlymorning mash sessions, anytime mash sessions, and ofcourse, probably the most popular time-killer among collegestudents everywhere — making long lists of everything youhave to do and bitching about how little time you have to do itin.

Other points of interest about the underclass: They likepizza, espresso shakes, mixed drinks, any drinks, the color red,the color black, snowy days with no school, sunny days withlittle school, and as many good-looking members of theopposite sex as they can find.

We hope you have enjoyed meeting our underclass nativestoday and will come back to see us soon!!!
