Tamworth bids for‘queen of shops’ fundingTamworth is bidding for a slice of £1 million ofgovernment funding to help improve andrejuvenate high streets.

Last year, shopping and business guru Mary Portascarried out an in-depth review of Britain's high streets for the Governmentand as a result, this funding has been made available. The Portas Pilot will see12 towns across the UK receive £100,000 to help boost and improve theirtown centres – and Tamworth is one of those which has applied.

Tamworth’s town team - ‘Destination Tamworth’ - made up of retailers andbusinesses across the borough - were responsible for putting the bid together, along with Tamworth Borough Council. If the bid is successful, the moneycould help boost town centre trade and breathe new life into the town centre.

Exciting plansfor the AssemblyRooms?Ambitious plans to improveand develop TamworthAssembly Rooms are in thepipeline.

The project to improve theAssembly Rooms – which werebuilt in 1887 to commemorateQueen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee –is at an early stage and is subjectto external funding being in placeto allow it to go ahead.

Tamworth Borough Council, inconjunction with StaffordshireCounty Council, is also looking atways to create a ‘cultural quarter’which would also include thelibrary.

Plans are at a very early stageand the work will be dependenton external funded. At this stagehowever, the council is workingvery closely with groups whichuse the Assembly Rooms, customers and the neighbouringTamworth Library to get theirviews and feedback.

Rob Mitchell, Director ofCommunities, Planning andPartnerships, said: “These arevery exciting plans for the future. If we do get the go-ahead thisdevelopment will help support thetown centre, existing businessesand in turn, the local economy.”

Rob Mitchell urged caution andsaid that there was still a lot ofwork to be done before the stagewas reached where the AssemblyRooms would be developedfurther.

Thousands celebrate St George’s Day

One of the biggest community artsprojects ever to be staged inTamworth opens at TamworthAssembly Rooms next week.

The Wall is a contemporary re-imagining of thePink Floyd rock opus. It is being staged atTamworth Assembly Rooms on June 6, 7 and 8by Arts Connects and Fired Up Theatre, bykind permission of Pink Floyd’s Roger Watersand Mark Fenwick Management.

Using Pink Floyd’s classic music, with a newnarrative brought bang up to date by SimonQuinn, The Wall is set on a fictitious housingestate somewhere in the West Midlands andexplores contemporary themes includinganti-social behaviour, poverty, unemployment, social deprivation, peerpressure and racism.

The project brings together and involves people from all ages andcommunities across Tamworth, including groups of people who would notnormally work together.

People from all across Tamworth with skills including acting, mime, storytelling, dance, poetry, rapping, graffiti art, puppetry, music, stage fighting, film, projection, costumes, set design and props have been hard at work toput the production together. They will be joined by top professional Pink Floydtribute band Floydian Slip who will be performing throughout the production.

Tickets for The Wall are still available from the Tourist Information Centre inCorporation Street or by calling the box office on 01827 709618.

Tamworth hostsunique arts project

The weather might not have been the best, but that didn’t stopthousands of people from packing into the Castle Grounds for the StGeorge’s Day extravaganza.

More than 6,000 people joined in the free St George’s Daycelebrations, which featured the hugely popular medieval joust, aswell as falconry, archery, medieval encampment displays, walkaboutcharacters, children’s workshops, street magic and face painting.
