Talk of the SPRING 2008 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Town & Gown Members, We are well into our 40th Anniversary year and many plans are underway to surprise you and make this 40th year one we all will remember in the history of Town & Gown. The elected and appointed leadership board of Town & Gown meets monthly. I would like to share with you some of the recent actions undertaken by this group of volunteers who represent you. Sometime ago your board made a five-year commitment to fund refurbishment of the T&G Conference Room in Memorial Hall. This year the Board voted to accelerate payment on this commitment and $12,000 has been designated for our pledge payment this year. If we are able to pay the same amount next year we will have paid off our commitment one year earlier than planned and you as members will have donated $40,000 to create a special meeting place for faculty and staff of Chapman University. Another recent action was to authorize purchase of a new banner for Town & Gown. Barbara Parker is heading up the team to design and procure this new banner. We hope to have it in place for the Annual Spring Luncheon on May 1. Throughout this newsletter you will read more about the many exciting plans and events that are planned for the remainder of this year. Be sure to mark your calendars and be present at our May 1 Luncheon. Town & Gown is you - our loyal members! – Donna Gladson The Town & Gown Board is planning a festive Annual Spring Luncheon in celebration of its 40th year as a Chapman support group at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, in the William and Willa Dean Lyon Conference Center, second floor, Argyros Forum, Room 209. By Joanne Jurczyk, University AdvancementThere is nothing like a dream to create the future. – Victor HugoAs I write this latest Gown Talk, this quote by Victor Hugo seems

the perfect way to summarize the prospects of Chapman University. Here at Chapman dreams do create the future. President Dotirecently made his annual State of the University Address and gaveexciting insight into what we can anticipate in the coming years. The following highlights the growth, expansion and developmenthe expects on campus before 2012.• The arrival of the Nobel Laureate Team to campus headed up byDr. Vernon L. Smith, recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize in

Economics, who will lead the Economic Science Institute.• The completion this fall of the final phase of the Erin J. Lastinger Athletics Complexwhich includes the dedication of the Ernie Chapman Stadium, Zee Allred Aquatics Centerand the Bill and Barbara Parker Atrium Lobby, to mention only a few of the many newfacilities to be completed.• Announcement of the new Global Citizens Plaza that will include a stainless steel spherewater fountain surrounded by 64 flags of the world, an area to celebrate Chapman’s diversestudent population and mission to “… to provide a personalized education of distinctionthat leads to inquiring, ethical and productive lives as global citizens.”• Plans for a new science building or complex - its location still to be announced alongwith the news of a physics program that also will include a team of scientists who will forman institute similar to Economic Science Institute.

Chapman University’s path ahead continues to burn bright, and as we “dream to create afuture.” Along the way, I want to remind everyone to take the opportunity to experience“dreams and futures” that are happening right now through the various theatrical works, dance recitals or concerts and sports events that highlight our talented Chapman students.I urge everyone to check the Chapman calendar of events at www.chapman.edu. Click on“About Chapman” and “Events Calendar” to discover Chapman University. While you areat it … check out the new Town & Gown Web page that includes the recent issues of Talkof the Town online and a photo gallery of T&G events.

For several years, Town & Gown andindividual members of T&G have beengenerous supporters of the Opening Nightperformance of Chapman’s prestigiousAmerican Celebration scholarship fundraiser.Three of our members, Merry Berkowitz,Barbara Parker and I, are members of thecommittee for American CelebrationOpening Night.

Our goal this year is not only to haveT&G attendance increase at Opening Nightbut to have additional T&G members electto support the event as sponsors in theprogram brochure.

T&G typically subscribes to a full-pagead as an organization and we encourageour members to consider individualsponsorships. A business card-sized adstarts at only $45.

It also is our hope to have some earlycommitments as sponsorships for inclusionin the invitational brochure, to be mailed tomore than 10,000 in the community, as anincentive for others to decide to participate.

The recently completed 14th season ofT&G’s Lunch at the Forum series, featuringChapman faculty speakers, has seen ever-growing attendance at each luncheon.

Popularity of the Forum is attributed tothe interesting programming that showcasedfour outstanding faculty members whodiscussed topics ranging from life in theGalapagos Islands, to artist Jackson Pollockand author “Aunt” Jane Austen, to stringquartet and piano performances.

At present the plan is to continueholding the 2008-09 Lunch at the ForumSeries in the same location - ArgyrosForum. However, members and friendswill need to reserve their season ticketsearly to avoid the disappointment of beingplaced on a waiting list.

Look for a T&G summer flyer announcingthe 2008-09 Lunch at the Forum Series. If youhave questions or need additional information

Town TalkThe City of Orange is a fun and exciting place to be in the summer, offering events and

activities for all to enjoy. Here is a quick look at we have planned for Summer 2008.Concerts in the Park (relax and listen to music). Pack your picnic baskets, relax at

Hart Park (22 Fwy and Glassell), and enjoy fantastic free entertainment for all ages underthe summer stars on Wednesday evenings from June 18-Aug. 13. Bring your blankets orlawn chairs and get ready for a great time! Food and drinks can be purchased at theKiwanis Club of Orange booth.Swimming at the Plunge. Join in on all the fun at the newly renovated pools at Hart

Park, yes pools! The old pool deck now accommodates two pools for the public to enjoy.Hart Park pool offers swimming lessons for all levels with certified instructors. Or stopby for recreational swimming at posted hours during the week and weekend – my personalfavorite is night swimming on Wednesday evening.

What about taking a cool dip while getting a great workout with our aquatic exerciseprogram? This program helps sustain and improve joint mobility and muscle tone, andimproves endurance levels in a fun, supportive class environment. Also, private poolrentals are a great way to celebrate a birthday, have a family reunion or even give acompany party. Certified Lifeguards are included.Still more to do! The City of Orange offers an adult basketball program and slow pitch

leagues for men, women, and co-eds. We also offer great summer day camp programsincluding a teen club. The City has a wonderful event to commemorate our nation’sIndependence Day. The 3rd of July Celebration salutes the red, white and blue with thecommunity. Join thousands of residents enjoying interactive games, listening to liveentertainment, savoring delicious food from Orange non-profit groups, singing along tothe Orange Community Master Chorale of Santiago Canyon College and becomingmesmerized by a colorful fireworks show.

Top off a wonderful summer with a Labor Day tradition – the Orange International Street Fair. This event attracts over 100,000 people over the three-day event (Friday through Sunday).
