Changes to Advanced English in 2019

    Change Impact on Course Program

    Restructured Modules, Changed Texts

    ● Reduction in set texts from 5 to 4● Focus on more challenging literary texts, with mandatory poetry/drama, prose

    fiction and Shakespearean drama

Areas of Study replaced by Texts and Human Experience Module

    ● Common Module for all students ● One prescribed text, and one related text in assessments● Prescribed text only in Trial and HSC Examination

    Harder to pre-prepare essay questions

    ● Challenges students to engage more deeply with texts rather than memorising essays

    ● Questions will focus on complex ideas and how meaning is specifically shaped in texts

Less exams - more assessments ● Max of 4 assessments in Year 12, with only one exam (capped at 30%)● Multi-modal presentation worth 15% of assessment

New Module C ● New Module entitled The Craft of Writing● Students will read at least two short prescribed texts and synthesise an

imaginative, persuasive, discursive and/or reflective piece

    ● Many schools are failing to specifically address the requirements of Paper 1, Question 1

(Reading Task), revealing insufficient focus on the skills of close analysis

    ● Students finding that insufficient time is being devoted to Module C skills, content, and definition

of key terms, resulting in generalised anxiety and uncertainty about how to approach study and

    practice

    ● The ambiguity of the requirements regarding the Related Text in the Common Module has led

to wide and diverse interpretations of how to implement the assessment, and has resulted in

diverse interpretations of definitions of the multi-modal assessment itself
