Such was the case for me years ago on a flight from Portland. There was a young fella who looked to be in his late twenties in the window seat on my row. Soon a woman in her forties joined us and began to nestle into that middle seat. I try to suppress first impressions, but sometimes they are overwhelming. The young man seemed forceful and overconfident in his speech and mannerisms, the woman seemed a bit self-focused and indifferent, but we all settled down, and the plane took off. At one point in the flight, I thought I heard the guy chewing something. It sounded like gum, candy, or maybe a piece of old tire retread. I am not sure what it was, but whatever it was, he was working it over. Obviously the woman heard it well, and it was getting to her. A little later in the flight, having all she could stand, the woman looked at the guy and said, “Your chewing is so loud and obnoxious. You sound like an animal.” At first he seemed shocked, but then he expressed how offended he was that she would confront him on such a trivial issue. He then proceeded to take his gum out of his mouth and show it to her. He asked if she would be more offended if he twirled it on his finger. Well! At that point, the fight was on. For several minutes the two threw barbs at one another, until it got ugly. The woman finally said, “Your mother did a rotten job of raising you!” to which the guy replied, “I have these headphones here that drown out sound. I can see your lips moving but I can’t hear your voice. I bet your husband would love a pair of these!” I contemplated what I should do. I could offer to sit between them, but if I am to die a martyr for Jesus, I was at least hoping it would not be from such an insignificant event. I also thought about reading the Bible….out loud. Maybe a passage from Leviticus about stoning would be good. Seriously, I thought that maybe a peaceful word would help the situation, before the Secret Service agent on board thought we were creating a diversion for a terrorist plot, but none of that was possible. The young man put on his headphones and tuned out, then the lady asked the stewardess for some headphones so that she could tune him out, but not until she told the stewardess how rude he was. For the next two hours they sat in silence, walled off from each other and the conflict between them, waiting to land and get away from it all….while I was quietly thanking God that I had an aisle seat. This is symbolic of how relational conflict can be handled, or should I say not handled. We all face conflict in our lives. It may be with a coworker or neighbor, or in the home with a spouse, parent, or child. One of the easiest responses to conflict is to shut out the other person and the problem. Psychologists call it the “fight or flight” syndrome. This means that in a conflict, a person has the tendency to fight the other person or to avoid them completely. It is interesting that these two in the plane were practicing “flight” on a flight. In most conflicts, we have three options. The first option is to “tune it up”, which is another way of saying we get loud, or angry, or forceful. I have done that, and always lived to regret it. Can you relate? The second option is to “tune out”, which is when we cut the person off through avoidance or the silent treatment. When we do this we are curling up in the cocoon of self- protection while still spewing out voiceless venom. Silence may be needed in a heated moment, but this silence is not productive because it is rooted in revenge. There is a third option. We can “tune in”. We can tune in on several levels in the midst of the disagreement. One area we can tune into is our own emotions. We can ask, “Why am I so mad? Is it because I have been mistreated or do I just want to get my way?” Such honest self-assessment is priceless during conflict, and often just as rare. The second area I can tune into is the other person. I must ask, “Have I really heard this person?” “Is there truth in their comments, even if it is buried under a lot of emotion and immaturity?” Finally, and most importantly, we can tune into the Holy Spirit. The Lord will help us understand the conflict from His perspective and give us the grace to act and react with a Christ-like spirit. So our lesson for better relationships is not to go through life with headphones on. When conflict happens we should try to tune in to the other person before seeing them as an adversary. Pay attention to your deeper motives, listen to the other person’s perspective, and draw on the Holy Spirit’s wisdom. Oh, there is one more lesson for better relationships….don’t chew so loud. And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God . Luke 18:27 Randy

Gwyn Shore Tells of Her Mission TripOn June 5th-16th I was blessed with the

opportunity to travel to Hungary, Austria, Croatia, and Serbia with the Lee University SymphonicBand. I have done ministry with this group for thepast year, and I loved being able to serve with themon an international scale. This mission trip wasdefinitely an enlightening experience and one inwhich I could see God at work.

Our group spent the majority of our time inthe beautiful city of Budapest, Hungary, doingmultiple performances around the city. We did several “flash mobs” (which, because of our conspicuous

instruments, were more like “impromptu concerts”) in various squares throughout Budapest. By working with local churches, we usedthese concerts to advertise upcoming performances and minister to those passing through the area. The Symphonic Band also ledSunday morning worship at the Budapest Church of God and performed a concert at a

school in Velence,Hungary where we wereable to meet and havelunch with several of thechildren. On Thursdaynight, we performed apublic concert at a localmusic school. For thisconcert, we were joinedby the Hungarian National Youth Orchestra and Choir for our final piece(Bernstein’s “America” from West Side Story). The audience loved“America” and convinced us to play the piece a second time! Our week

in Budapest also included a day trip to Vienna, Austria. Though this trip was purely sight-seeing and not performing, I loved walkingthe steps of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss!

On Saturday the 13th, we left Hungary for a weekend tour in Croatiaand Serbia. That evening, we performed in Vukovar, Croatia’s “Valley ofBlessings” concert, which was televised throughout Croatia. Since Vukovar isso close to the Serbian border, this city was devastated during the Yugoslavwars of the 90s, a war in which the two countries were in opposition. Vukovarand the surrounding area was called the “Valley of Sorrow,” but this concertrepresented the healing taking place between the two countries, featuring bothCroatian and Serbian groups for the first time in many years. It was neat tohear many older American gospel and contemporary songs translated intoCroatian and to hear everyone singing along in their respective languages.

The most moving moment of the trip for me was definitely the serviceat the Croatian Church of God. I was overwhelmed with the sincerity of theseworshippers and furthermore, I was humbled with a greater understanding ofthe Body of Christ. Though most of these Croatian people did not understandthe English lyrics to our songs, they still praised God without ceasing. It is

powerful to hear scripture and wisdom in your own language and watch as it is translated for your brothers and sisters in Christ, whointernalize it and respond with “Amen!” After this service, we crossed the Serbian border and traveled to Sremska Mitrovica, where wewere met with even more enthusiasm. We were the first American band to ever play in this city and though our outdoor concert wasrained out after the third song, the Serbians excitedly hosted us for dinner and prayed with us before we left.

Overall, the trip was incredibly humbling. Seeing God’s beautiful creation in fourdifferent countries is fascinating in itself, but worshipping with fellow believers in threedifferent languages is even more meaningful. I will never forget the Hungarians’ reaction toour playing of their National Anthem Himnusz, hearing “He Lives” in Croatian and “10,000Reasons” in Serbian, and the camaraderie I felt among my fellow believers that transcendedlanguage and cultural barriers. Minor inconveniences such as the airline losing my suitcase, the crazy Croatian mosquitos, and the rained-out concert in Serbia paled in comparison towatching God at work within Central Europe. I praise God for both Lee University and mychurch family at Deep Creek, who made this trip possible through your many donations! In Christ, Gwyn

Youth Trip: Date to be announcedDOGS Outing: Date to be announced

Summer is one of my favorite times in Youth Ministry. We seem to kick it all off by celebrating our graduatesand students as they close out another school year and move on to another chapter in their lives. We follow thecelebration closely with a week of Vacation Bible School (VBS), a mission week and the beginning of weeks atsummer camps. It is a wonderful and exciting time of the year! (And on a personal note, the cold has goneaway for a few months! Yeah!)

Our VBS this year was themed around Mt. Everest and God's power. Each evening, many volunteers turned outto lead songs, stations, skits, kid groups, crafts, games or food (to name a few) The time of fellowship andworship was great each day and to see the excitement and smiles on each kid's face is always priceless. I amespecially proud of the Youth Group for the leadership roles they took on this year. Many of them were leadersat a station and participants in the nightly skit and others made sure that kid groups made it safely to all thestations. One of the most encouraging things however was their attitude toward Bible School. This is one oftheir favorite weeks of the church year, because they get to be together and teach and lead kids and worship theLord. Truly the power of God made this week a huge success and we give Him all the praise and glory! VBSis a great example of the individual church utilizing the gifts of its members and everyone united in spreadingthe gospel of Christ. We were made to operate in this manner!

Our next big event was Impact Yadkin. This week was one of the best mission weeks I have attended. It is aperfect picture of how individual churches come together in the name of Christ to change their community forthe better! Many churches joined Impact Yadkin, reaching acrossdenominational and cultural lines to help neighbors and friends inneed. Some were called to feed, some to evangelize, some to pray, some to build, some to lead, some to encourage, some to runsupplies and all to show the love of Christ. There were over 90homes that were physically improved, many hearts that werespiritually encouraged and many lives that came to know the savinggrace of Jesus Christ. There were also young people called intoministry and folks in ministry spiritually revived. I was blessed tobe a part of Impact Yadkin and I am thankful for a churchfamily that supports this event. The Lord's hand is truly at work inImpact Yadkin. To GOD be all the glory! (See next page for more )

In our DOGS and Youth meetings and Sunday School classes, we have continued our walk through Biblicalhistory and the progress of redemption. We have arrived at the lives of King Saul and King David and howGod's anointing was on their lives and their different approaches to their roles. It has been great to walkthrough Biblical history and look closer at God's word and his teaching. I'm excited for all of the lessons andstories to come.

I am thankful to be a part of the lives of the young people at Deep Creek. They are a constant source ofencouragement to me! May God continue to bless our young people!

Alli Jones is part of special project

Did you see this bit of news in all the local newspapers and theWinston-Salem Journal a few weeks back? Starmount Highstudents create working 3-dimensional hand for Oklahoma boy.In May, before school was out, using a 3D printer in theschool's media lab, Alli Jones’ Library Science class of 8members and advisor Suzie Thomasson created at hand for a 9-year-old Oklahoma boy in need of a prosthentic. They havereceived a picture of the smiling boy with a message that thehand fit, fingers worked and “was a hit”. They were connectedby e-NABLE, an organization that works to match those in needof a prosthetic with a volunteer to print it for them. Thestudents made the design, printed the layers of molten plastic, assembled the pieces – inserting the printed pins into theprinted knuckles, attaching the movingfingers to the printed palm, tightening thetension screws and tying the cords thatcontrol the hand’s movement. Alli’sstatement - “It’s actually pretty cool,”“We take for granted that we have two(hands). It’s really special to help him out.”

I will study the language of gentleness, and refuseto use words that bite and tones that crush.

I will practice patience at home, lest my testytemper break through unexpectedly and disgrace me.

I will remember that my neighbors have troublesenough to carry without loading mine on them.

I will excuse others’ faults and failures as often andas fully as I expect others to be lenient with mine.

I will cure criticism with commendation, close upagainst gossip and build healthy lives by service.

I will love boys and girls, so that old age will notfind me soured and sullen, but fresh and free.

I will gladden my nature by smiling out loud onevery fair occasion, and by outlookingoptimistically.

I will pray frequently, think good things, believe inmen, and so do a full day’s work without fear orfavor.
