Page 1: Taken 3 Poster (1)

Page LayoutThe text is above and below the primary image which could be used to create a sense of importance for the protagonist as he is enclosed and could imply that he is protected from the threat in the helicopter and in the city. The tagline is at the top of the page and the title, release date and star billing us at the bottom. There is no billing block on the poster. The top billing for the stars only states Liam Neeson’s name as he is most likely to be the most famous actor in the film. This could be a unique selling point as he is an infamous and renowned actor so people may be attracted to the film for this reason. His name is in white capital letters to stand out.

TaglineThe tagline is also in the colour red which could signify danger and is also bold and in a serif font in capital letters. It is eye-catching is at positioned at the top of the page. As the number ‘3’, the tagline and the release date are written in the colour red, it could suggest the finality of the films. Even though the tagline states that it will ‘never end’, it could be an enigma code for the audience as they may not be sure if this is the last film to be produced. It could suggest that everything will ‘end’ on the date it is released on general release into cinemas. Therefore, the mystery of whether it is the last film or not could be appealing to the audience to see what happens in the film as the tagline may be undermined.

Background ImageIt is the setting of tall skyscrapers in the vibrant city which is a familiar and relatable setting for the audience to comprehend. The bright lights suggest that it is a populated city and is very energetic at night. The sky is lit up from the beams creating a dramatic scene in the black sky.

Title BlockThe title block is written in capital letters in either red or white font. The letter ‘E’ in the word ‘Taken’ has been replaced with the number ‘3’ highlighting that it is the third film to be produced. The red colour contrasts with the white which is bold and eye-catching which may signify good versus evil as red usually signifies ganger whilst white connotes innocence. The title block is positioned at the bottom of the page and is in a serif font to connote strength and solidarity as it is an action film.

Release DateThe release date is written in red and is at the bottom of the poster. This could be because the audience would get attracted to the tagline first, then the title and image and lastly the release date. This is because they are persuaded to see the film and then find out when it is released; this is similar to a typical structure of a trailer as the release date is nearer to the end so they can see the brief plot and the genre before they know when it is out on general release in the cinema. As it is written in red, it links to the tagline and the number ‘3’ which may suggest it is the last ‘Taken’ film to be released (which is an enigma code.)

Central Photographic ImageIn the primary image, the hero has his back slanted sideways to the camera and his face is tilted. He has an indirect mode of address which could suggest that he has a dark secret to hide and it creates a sense of dishonesty with the character. He is holding a gun, which is typical iconography in an action and thriller genre. He is wearing all black making him seem mysterious to the audience. He may not be the stereotypical hero as it suggests from the image that he has fatal flaws making him an anti- hero. The helicopters in the background are used to highlight his presence suggesting he is a threat and may be a criminal himself, reinforcing the anti- hero character type.

ColoursThe main colours are red and white for the text and black and yellow for the setting. The black, including the protagonist’s jacket could connote his darkness and that he may have something to hide making him into an anti-hero as he is suggested to have is own fatal flaws. The black setting makes the audience aware that it is a thriller as darkness is an innate fear as an unknown threat could be lurking there. The yellow/white colour is the bright lights from the helicopters and the tall skyscrapers which could suggest that they are searching for the protagonist as the beams of light are aimed at him.

Target AudienceThe target audience are most likely to be people who have already seen the two other previous films. Any fans of Liam Neeson would be appealed to this film yet the main audience is specifically males as this is the main audience of an action and thriller film.
