    DearMRMTAMembers,

    Thelastfewmonthshavebeenflyingwithmanywonderfulactivitiesandfunevents.IamalwayssohonouredtobePresidentofanorganizationthatworksforitsmembers.Ittrulyengagessomanypeopleonbothsidesoftheteachingprofession;students,parentsandteachers.

    Asyouallknow,theMusicthonwasonceagainattheForks.Inits25thyear,ithasmaturedintoafun,successfuleventwithmanyteachersparticipating.Manythankstoallwhocameoutandvolunteeredbutespeciallytocommitteechair,GinaWedel.Shehasbecomethebackbonetothiseventandrunsitwithgreatefficiencyandconfidence.Itrunssmoothlyunderherhardworkanddedication.GinaandIhadthepleasureofanoutingtoseewhereallthemoneyraisedfortheVarietygoestoandIcanhonestlysaythecauseisveryworthwhile.WeattendedaclassheldbyMargotHardingatHarstoneDominionDaycareintheinnercity.There,weparticipatedin2classesoftheMusictanzProgrammeandhadagreattime.InnercityNurseryandKindergartenagedchildrenaretaughtmusicaurallythroughrhymes,rhythmandsong.Itisawonderfulprogrammeandwereallyenjoyedourvisit.

    OurlastworkshopoftheyearwasheldinJanuarywithMelanieWhyteasourguestclinician.Thankyoutoherforthisfinelearning/teachingexperienceandtotheparticipantswholearnedsomuch.LeanneHiebertkindlyworkedatmakingthiseventhappenandIamindebtedtoher

    andtheexecutiveformakingsuretheMRMTAcontinuedtoserveitsmembersduringmytimeawayduetoillness.

    AnotheryearhaspassedandtheScholarshipCompetitiontooiscompleted.ThankyoutoSusanKirton,anewmembertotheMRMTAwhoworkedextremelyhardrunningthisannualevent,alongwithherfabulouscommittee.ThewordisthattheGalaConcertwasanexcellentone.Congratulationstoalloftheparticipantsandtheirteachers.PianistMeganDufrat,underthetutelageofMRMTAmember,DavidMorozwasthewinneroftheadvancedpianocompetition.SheisofftorepresentManitobaattheNationalPianoCompetitioninVancouverduringCFMTA/FCAPMConventioninJuly.Wewishherthebestofluck!

    MeganDufratiscurrentlystudyingunderthetutelageofDr.DavidMorozattheDesautelsFacultyofMusicwheresheistherecipientoftheKatherineMayQuilliamScholarship,anawardreservedforatopundergraduatepianostudent.In2014,MeganwasaprizewinnerintheWomen’sMusicalClubofWinnipegscholarshipauditionsandreceivedaHoltbyScholarshipfromtheManitobaRegisteredMusicTeachers’Association.MeganhasperformedaspartoftheTuckamoreChamberMusicFestivalinSt.John’s,NL,andpresentlyworkswithManitobaUndergroundOperaasanrépétiteurandManitobaTheaterforYoungPeopleasanaccompanist.Currently,MeganistheaccompanistfortheWomenofNoteChoirs,UniversityofManitobaConcertChoirandteachespianoandtheorythroughtheDivisionofPreparatoryStudiesattheUniversityofManitoba.

    HaveyoueverheardabouttheFeldenkraisMethod?InlastJanuary,thePre-DiplomaGroupinvitedColinMehmel,aGuildCertifiedFelden-kraispractitioner,toexperimentthatnewtechniqueinagroupworkshop.Infact,theFeldenkraisMethodisatechniquetodeveloptheaware-nessofthebodymovement.Itisnotyoga,itisnotAlexanderTechnique,itissomethingelse.So,itwasveryinterestingtotrythisnewapproach,workingonchairexercises,andverygently,stretchingourmuscles.

    Afteranhourofthat“training”,wesatatthepianoandplayedforfun...whatasurprisetodiscoverthatwewerenowplayingwithadifferentfeelingthanusual.Weheardcom-mentslike“oh,thisiswhatmybackisdoingwhenIplay”or“nowthatIknowmystrongerside,lwillusethesemuscles”.Ofcourse,itcan’thappeninoneday,butitwasabegin-ninginanewdirection.

    Foranymusicianwhoisexperiment-ingchronicpain,theFeldenkraisMethodiscertainlyanavenueto

    explore.Ifyouareinterested,Colinisteachingweekly“AwarenessThroughMovement“attheRadyJCC.HealsoteachesFeldenkraisMethodattheManitobaConservatoryofMusic,andattheFacultyofMusicDivisionofPrepStudiesoftheUniversityofManitoba.

    Inconclusion,wewereveryhappywiththisexperience,andwewanttothankColinMehmelforsharinghisknowledgewithus.Now,weallhavethat“awareness”printedinourmemories!✵

    2014 Western Young Artist Competition Tour Journal

    W ewould like tobeginbythankingtheCFMTAforcontinuingtooffer thiswonderfulopportunity,andCathyDonahueforcoordinatingourtour.We’dalsoespeciallyliketothankGarryGable,forhismeticulousattentiontodetailinconstructingtheprogram,andtothankbothheandKathleen Lohrenz Gable forgiving up countless hours thissummer, free of charge, to aidus in putting this recital together.Wearemoregratefulthanwecansayforeverythingthey’vedonetohelpusmakethistourtheamazingexperienceittrulyhasbeen.

    Wewould like to thankall thecoordinators–Marilyn Lohrenz,KathleenSolose,BrendaHamilton,GloriaNickel,HeatherMacnab,DianaWoolrich,KarenFransden,MarlaWinters,Mary-JoCarrabré,IrmaKonrad, and TiffanyWilson -- forall their efforts on our behalf.Theyhelped not only withpublicity andraising awareness for our concerts,but alsomade surewehadbeautifulvenues, great pianos,fantasticaccommodations,andensuringeverythingransmoothly!Andalltheaudienceswere sosupportiveandwelcoming!

    PrinceAlbertwassuchanencouragingfirstperformance–thechurchwasinvitingandintimate,and it felt like thekindof salonconcertwe strove toemulate. ForLindsay, therewas theaddedbonusofbeingabletoperformformanyoldfriends,asMarilynLohrenzishergrandmother,andLindsay spent a lotoftimeinPrinceAlbertgrowing

    up.ArthurLavertu,aformerYoungArtistwinnerhimselffrom 1981,gaveusawonderfulintroductionanddidagreatjobofsettingusateaseandtakingthepressure off.Itwasexcitingtoseesuchapositiveresponsetothemusicalprogramweworkedsohardtoput together,aswehadnotyetperformeditforanaudience.Theebbandflowoftherecitalweconstructedseemedto resonate strongly with ouraudience,and this gave us ahuge boost of confidence andeagernesstocontinuetherestofourtour.Wearrivedtoawonderfularrayofsnacks,which–givenit wasanafternoonconcert–wassoappreciatedafterthedriveupfromSaskatoon.Aftertheconcert,we weretreatedtoasublimedinneratAmy’ssharedwithwonderfulcompany,whichwasarealhighlight forallofus.

    WecontinuedontoSaskatoonwithgreatanticipation,asitisalsoourhometown.Tobeabletosingformanyofourfriendsandfamily–aswellasteachers,colleagues,andprofessors–wasreallyspecial.Allisonfeltveryluckytohavemanyfamilymembersintheaudiencewhohadn’thadtheopportunitytohearherinalongtime.Thechurchwaswonderful,andtheaudiencewaswarmandreceptive.Manypeoplecommentedontherayofsunshineonthestage,sayingitbroughtanelementofcharmandgrace toourperformance.MichaelHarris’thoughtfulintroductions,care,andsenseoffunsetthe atmosphere fortheconcert,makingitaveryenjoyableexperienceforallofus.It

    wasadelighttoreceive bouquetsofflowersattheendoftheconcert.ManythankstoKathleenSoloseforherhelpingettingusaccesstothe church for rehearsal andwithpublicity, and toNoreenWensleyfor her photography, capturingcandidmomentsfromourrecitalandprovidingwonderfulmemoriesofourtour.OurnextstopwasRosetown.Thehallhadaraisedstageandtheatrelighting,whichgaveusanothervaluableexperience.Itwasexcitingforustoseesomanychildrenintheaudience–especiallyasone of themwasnamedMalcolm,andoneofLindsay’s songs referencesaMalcolm.GloriaandBrenda tookcareofoureveryneed–preparingsnacks,introducingus,andaidingusinourpreparations.ItwasaspecialtreattohaveCathyDonahueinattendanceforthisrecital.ManythankstoClaireSeiboldforhostingthereception,whereweenjoyedmuchlaughterandsparklingconversation.GloriaNickelwaskindenoughtobilletusinherbeautifulhome,andalsoprovidedanamazingbreakfasttosendusonourway!DrivinguptoRedmondHouseinMapleCreekwasstunning–thehistoryofthetownshinesthroughinitseveryaspect,andthestreetsarealllinedwithgorgeoustreesthatmakeitfeelratheridyllic. Duringourrehearsalinthechurch,itwasfuntosingafewimpromptunumbersfortheafternoonpiesocial.ManythankstoHeatherMacnabforputtingusupinRedmondHouse,whereweenjoyeda scrumptiousmealanddeliciousdesserts.Eachof

    ourroomswasuniqueandelegant.We alsoappreciated how Heatherdressed and set the hall withgreenery. Chelsea Cox and AndrewHeckerhostedareceptionattheirhomeaftertheconcert,whichgaveusamuch-neededchancetorelaxandcatchupwitholdfriends.

    InRegina,everythingranextremelysmoothlythankstoDianaWoolrich’sandKarenFransden’sattentiontoeverydetail.WearethankfultohavereceivedcopiesofthearticleintheLeaderPostfromDiana–thosekeepsakesareveryspecial.Thecathedralhadspectacularstainedglasswindowsanda resonantacoustic;itwasajoytosingthere.BecauseAllisonwassingingoneofRobertUrsan’ssongs,wewereespecially honoured to have himattend our recital.We had a lovelytime at the receptionchattingandenjoyingthedeliciouspunchmadebyKaren.ManythanksalsotoRobinSwalesforhislimoservicetoandfromourhotel,andtotheReginabranchforthebeautifulflowers.

    ItwasathrilltoperforminBrandonUniversity’sLorneWatsonRecitalHall,withitsstunningacoustic and backstagetechnicianswhowerehelpfulinadjustingthelighting,pianoandsetup.Beingabletoprepareinthegreenroombeforetheconcertmadeiteasyforustofocusinonourperformance.We weresopleasedtobehostedbyMary-JoandPatCarrabréintheirbeautifulhome,andenjoyedtrulydelectablehome-cookedmeals.After theconcert, the teachers

    prepared a receptionwithyetanotherdeliciouspunch and yummydesserts. (We arebeginning to thinkthat the registeredmusic teachersshouldputtogetherabookofrecipesforpunch!)Itwassorewardingtospeakwitheveryone.

    Havingenjoyedsunandheat foralmost theentire tour,weweregrateful for the rainon thewaytoWinnipeg,andabitofcoolerweather.WehadanothernewvenueexperienceinWinnipegaswe sangatacountryclub.Weweregiventheuseofasunroomupstairs,anddownstairswehadalovelyset-upthat felt like thekindof salonconcertwewere trying toemulate.Therewere somanyprofessional colleaguesinattendance,anditwasdoublyexcitingtohaveCharlineFarrell,presidentofthe CFMTA,thereaswell.Many thanks toIrmaKonrad foreverythingshedid inarrangingall thedetailsofthe recital,housing,andpublicity,andtoTiffanyWilson,whowassoaccommodatingandenthusiastic.

    Touring in the fall through theprairieswas really beautiful.We’velearned somany small lessons,whichhavecombinedtobecomepricelessskillandunderstanding,becauseofthistour–howtoliveontheroad,whatandhowtopack,howtomanagebothourselvesandourvoices,justtomentiona

    few.We learned the importanceof getting enough sleep in orderto keep our energy high, all thewhile balancing thatwithwantingto spendtimewithourhosts.Werealized theneed to continuallypushourselvestoimproveineachlocation,soastomakeeachperformancefreshandnew.Wediscoveredthatwecouldpushpastourperceivedpersonallimitsandstillbeabletocopeandfunction.Thevalue ofthistour,andtheprofessionalexperiencegainedthroughit,cannotbediminished.Tohavehad thischanceatthispointinourtrainingisoneofthemostbeneficialopportunitieseitherofushaseverhad!

    The2015ScholarshipCompetitionwasheldattheSterlingMennoniteFellowshipApril8–10th.Twenty-nineteachershadstudentscompeteinthescholarshipserieswithatotalof84studententries.

    Thelistofvolunteerswasveryhelpfulasonly4outof13werenotabletohelp.Thankyousomuchtoourwonderfulvolunteers:

    TheGalaConcerttookplaceatSterlingMennoniteonSunday,April12.AbigthankyoutoLaurelHowardforherexcellentjobemceeingtheevening.Theaudiencewastreatedtoalovelyandlivelyhourofvoice,violinandpianoperformancesbyourscholarshipwinners.Winnersofthepaperscholarshipswerealsopresenttoreceivetheirawards.Thededicationtotheirmusicstudieswasevidentinallthestudents,andweareverypleasedtobeabletohelpsupportthem.

    Fiscally,thiswasagoodyearforthescholarshipcompetition.ThankstothechangesmadeafewyearsagoundertheleadershipofMurielSmith,towhomwearegrateful,wewereabletocomeinunderbudget.Thisisgreatnewsforthelong-termviabilityofrunningtheMRMTAscholarshipcompetition.

    MRMTA’s 25thMusicthonwasheldatTheForksMarket.Thiswasthesecondyeartheeventwasheldatthislocation,andagainprovedtobeagreatvenuetoshowcasetheMRMTA.Thousandsofpeopleenjoyedthemusicthroughouttheweekend.Atotalof$9436.82wasraisedforVariety’sChildrenprograms.Therewere23teachersinvolvedand142students.Ahugethankyoutotheteachersthatvolunteered,AnnetteHayforfindingsponsors/prizes,theForksmarketforthegreatvenueandtooursponsors;St.John’sMusicforprovidingthepiano,theWomen’sMusicalClub,WinnipegMusicFestival,EleanoreMcLeod,TheKegandLongandMcQuadeforprovidinggiftcardsandticketsforthestudentswhobroughtinthemostmoneyinpledges.
