How do we get from European Exploration to Imperialism leading to the outbreak of WWI?
• Well, that is what our standards are asking us to do.

Colony
• A territory ruled by another nation, usually one far away
Colonization
• A system by which a country maintains colonies outside its borders.
• Exploitation, maintenance, acquisition, and expansion of colonies in one territory by people from another territory.
• Unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous population.
Primary Reasons for Colonialism
• Occurred in the late 1800’s
• Competition for raw materials, a market for their products, and cheap labor
• The Industrial Revolution created a great demand for low-cost raw materials and profitable markets to sell their goods

• By the late 1800’s most of the world had been divided by the Europeans into colonial powers
