Tailor-made Travel in IcelandDay 1.

A personal guide from Luxury Adventures meets you at the airport upon your arrival, driving you to your hotel in a comfortable, late-model car. After check-in, the rest of your afternoon is free. Dinner is at a selected restaurant.

Day 2.

The next morning, your personal guide will pick you up at the hotel. After a quick sightseeing drive around the city, we head to Borgarfjordur. We will cross several salmon rivers en route to the Snaefellsujokull glacier, the setting for Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. We will stay the night in a nearby hotel, with dinner at the hotel.

Day 3.

The following day we will take a boat trip in Breidafjordur, a bay dotted with a myriad of islands. The captain is likely to help you collect sea shells, crabs and other sea creatures; you get to taste your catch. Afterwards you explore a small Icelandic fishing village, Stykkisholmur. We overnight in a nearby hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4.

The following morning we fly you in a private plane to Lake Myvatn. This area is world-renowned for its avian life: some local species of duck are found nowhere else in the world. Experience lava fields – some overgrown with incredibly soft moss – and pseudocraters. The lava fields conceal some underground hot springs, where some of the locals are said to go skinny dipping. You might like to join in! We then continue for the Namafjall/Krafla area. This is an active volcanic zone, very rich in color and in geological formations. From here we drive to Akureyri, the chief town of the North. Overnight in the north. Dinner at a selected restaurant.

Day 5.

The following morning, after a quick sightseeing drive through Akureyri, we head westward to the village of Saudarkrokur. Here we board a boat that will take us across the fjord to the island of Drangey, where 300-foot vertical cliffs teem with avian life. On the way back, we will visit the hot spring Grettislaug, where your guide will relate fascinating stories from the times of settlement in Iceland. We will then stay overnight and have dinner in a nearby hotel.

Day 6.

After breakfast the following day, you are invited to go horseback riding on the Icelandic horse, famous for its many smooth gaits. We then head into the mountainous interior, heading south on Kjalvegur. You will see black sands, glaciers, rough landscape, scenic mountains, and boiling lava mud. Part of this area is devoid of life. You will have the opportunity to bathe in a natural geothermal pool. When we reach the populated area, we will visit Gullfoss, a spectacular series of waterfalls. We will stay overnight in a nearby hotel. Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 7.

We start next morning, visiting Geysir, the “geyser” which gave its name to all other erupting hot springs. After having explored a lava cave and other phenomena in the area, you will be invited to go snowmobiling, conditions permitting. As we continue our drive towards Reykjavík, we will visit Thingvellir, where the Althing, the oldest active parliament in the world, was established in 930. Later we will visit a geothermal power plant, where you will be met by a scientist who will guide you around the plant. Once back at your hotel in Reykjavik, it’s time to freshen up because this evening’s dinner will be hosted at the home of an Icelandic artist. He and his wife will serve a full dinner in this very special setting. After the meal you may be invited to view his gallery.

Day 8.

You will have the option of sleeping longer the following morning. After check-out around noon, your driver will take you to the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal pool and spa set in a lava field, with beaches of black sand. An in-pool massage awaits: you can’t find a better way to relax. Afterwards, your driver will take you to the airport and escort you to the check-in counter. After a few days in tailor made travel in Iceland, you will return home ready for whatever life throws your way.
