3D MLI Sensor™ Technology

IEE has developed a 3D sensor that uses MLI (Modulated Light Intensity) technology. This technology is based on the optical t ime of flight (TOF) prin-ciple, where an act ive, non-scanning light source emits modulated near-infrared light. The phase shift between the light emitted by the source and the light reflected by the people and objects in the field of view is meas-ured to create a real-t ime topographic image of the monitored area. The 3D MLI Sensor™ calculates the exact num-ber of people leaving the detect ion area and triggers an alarm when it detects situat ions such as tailgat ing or piggybacking.

Seamless Integrat ion

TDflexTM works with security systems by intercepting the signal emitted by the ID reader and determining the status of the access point (i.e. open/closed door). The sensor then establishes whether a single person is attempting to enter the secure area. In the event of dual or unauthorized entry it provides the necessary output signal by refusing access or triggering an alarm, thereby adding a security layer to the exist ing access controls system.

High Accuracy

Sophisticated algorithms and extensive test scenarios ensure reliable detect ion of people and objects in the detect ion area. These test scenarios, which con-sist of people carrying or wheeling luggage, wearing hats, or walking closely together, show that TDflex™ can both handle people carrying objects and detect mult iple individuals in close proximity.

Reliability in Changing Light Conditions Since the sensor emits its own illumina-t ion, the performance is not influenced by art ificial light and the sensor also works in the dark.

Real Mantrap Mode

In the real mantrap mode, TDflex™ monitors the space between two interlocking doors and provides the following outputs:

• Empty • Only one person • Suspicious

In this mode, TDflex™ does not con-sider authent icat ion credits (inputs) from the access control system; it cont i-nuously provides the occupancy status of the mantrap.

Operating Modes

TDflex™ is a Tailgate Detector with two main operating modes:

• Virtual mantrap • Real mantrap

Virtual Mantrap Mode

In this mode TDflex™ monitors access to a secure area and can be installed, for example, at security doors or turn-st iles.

If an unauthorized person attempts to gain access, TDflex™ generates an alarm. This means that, depending on the security strategy, the security door can be locked as a preventat ive mea-sure ("high security") or if the secure area is breached, an alarm can be triggered.

Addit ional Features

In addit ion to its access control features, by sett ing the appropriate parameters TDflex™ can also be used as a People Counter:

Output values: • Forward/Backwards counts • Zone occupancy. Triggering of an alarm if occupancy exceeds or falls below the set thresholds. When mult iple sensors are combined, the occupancy of the ent ire networked area will be displayed in the Occu-pancy Monitoring software.

Easy Installat ionThe Tailgate Detector TDflex™ can be seamlessly integrated into exist ing access control systems and requires only minimal changes to the exist ing infrastructure.

The decision to allow access can either be made within the sensor itself or by the exist ing security system. Embedded Software

Due to its integrated firmware, the sensor does not require any addit ional computers or servers to process the data it captures.

Semi-Automatic Calibrat ionAfter configuring basic data such as detect ion width, length and mounting height, the sensor calibrates the detec-t ion area within a few seconds. During this calibrat ion, the sensor checks the empty detect ion area and captures the presence of fixed objects and walls.

Self-Diagnost ics

A self-diagnost ic rout ine runs at start-up and is regularly repeated to detect any sensor malfunct ion. The results are provided through a Web interface, status LEDs and digital out-puts.
