The Arts Anchor Fund program awards range in value from $20,000 to $35,000 each, and the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program awards are $2,500 each. Funding for both programs is for the 2013-14 biennium. The 2013-2014 Arts Anchor Fund program award recipients are Hilltop Artists, Museum of Glass, Northwest Sinfonietta, Tacoma Art Museum, Ta- coma Musical Playhouse, Tacoma Opera, Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, Tacoma Youth Symphony Association and The Grand Cinema. In 2012, these nine organizations served 462,539 people, provided free admission to 76,021 people, and generated an estimated $8.82 million for the local economy. The Tacoma Arts Commission established the Arts Anchor Fund program in 1995 to provide fi- nancial support to major local not-for-profit arts organizations that significantly improve the qual- ity of life for Tacoma. These arts organizations serve Tacoma's community through regularly scheduled performances, exhibits and events, and school and outreach programs. The 2013-2014 Tacoma Artists Initiative Program funded artists are Sean Alexander, Carla Barragan, Bill Colby, Alice Di Certo, Kyle Dillehay, David Dom- koski, Oliver Doriss, Josie Emmons Turner, Sarah Gilbert, Erin Guinup, Meghan Mitchell, Mark Mon- lux, Kat Ogden, Scott Scoggin, Erik Steighner and Noah Struthers. Funded Tacoma Artists Initiative Program projects include the choreography and pro- duction of a contemporary dance piece, creation and exhibition of two- and three-dimensional art, direc- tion of a theatrical production, performance and re- cording of music, production and screening of a film, public reading of poetry, and production of white- board animation videos. The Arts Anchor Fund program and Tacoma Art- ists Initiative Program are two of three funding pro- grams administered by the Tacoma Arts Commis- sion. "The death this morning at a Port of Tacoma terminal does not appear to be the result of an industrial accident," said port spokesperson Tara Mattina. "According to the coroner, it is a probable cardiac-related death. The investi- gation is still ongoing. Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends." The port was scheduled to be shut down un- til 8 a.m. on Tues., March 26. Additional details about the victim, who was believed to be an ILWU 23 longshore worker, were not immediately available. This is the second fatality at the port in one month. On March 12, a worker died in an in- dustrial accident at Pierce County Terminal. Port terminals shut down again following fatality Posted online Mon., March 25 Downtown On the Go and the American Heart Association, in partner- ship with Metro Parks Ta- coma, are coming togeth- er to host a walking event next week in celebration of National Walking Day. The event, which will be held on Weds., April 3, will kick-off Down- town On the Go's 2013 Walk Tacoma series. Participants will enjoy a garden walk through Wright Park and the Conservatory led by Urban Forester Kathy Sutalo and Natural Resource Coordinator Mary Anderson. They will also learn about the many historic trees that were planted in the 1890's, as well as the beautiful plants in the perennial beds and borders, and the tropical plants inside the W. W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. The April 3 walk, spon- sored by Doyle's Public House, will begin at the south side of Wright Park by the lion sculptures at noon. Walkers will be able to visit booths from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. to learn more about healthy lifestyles, healthy commutes, and other walking events. The first 100 walk participants will receive a swag bag, and all participants who walk, bike, or take the bus to the event will be eligible for additional prizes. There is no pre- registration necessary. The Walk Tacoma 2013 series is an eight- event walking series held on the first and third Wednesdays between April and August. The fun, themed walks, now in their fourth year, encour- age downtown employees and residents to exer- cise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Tacoma. The walks are scheduled at the lunch hour and just after work to encourage downtown employees to walk during their workday, wheth- er it is to and from work or at a lunch break. Walking maps of the routes are available at no cost at Downtown On the Go, located at 950 Pacific Ave., Suite 300, at many downtown busi- nesses, or by contacting Downtown On the Go Coordinator Meagan Kula at (253) 682-1734 or [email protected]. Walk Tacoma Series begins April 3 in Wright Park Posted online Mon., March 25 City of Tacoma officials announced Monday local fire fighter Annie Craig will be recognized this week with a Medal of Valor Award for her actions during a recent water rescue. According to city officials, after arriving at Owen Beach in Point Defiance Park for an un- related 911 call, the Tacoma Fire Department's Ladder 3 fire fighters spotted John Bronson swimming in the water near an overturned ca- noe. Rebecca Thayer-Blunt, Bronson's daugh- ter, swam out to help Bronson get the canoe back to the beach but the two were unable to do so by themselves. As the Tacoma Fire Depart- ment's Ladder 3 crew assembled equipment to assist from shore, Bronson began struggling to keep his head above water, submerging sever- al times. Tacoma Fire Department fire fighter Craig entered the water and swam to Bronson. With Thayer-Blunt's assistance, Craig towed Bronson about 40 feet back to shore, where Bronson was medically evaluated, warmed and then released at the scene. Craig is scheduled to receive the award dur- ing a ceremony on Weds., March 27 at 2 p.m. at Tacoma Municipal Building, City Council Chambers, 747 Market St., first floor, in Tacoma.
