Paralytic shell sh poison closes beaches in Pierce County

Paralytic Shell sh Poison (PSP) has been de-tected at unsafe levels in shell sh samples collected from the Day Island, Point De ance, Wollochet Bay, and Hale Passage areas of Pierce County. As a re-sult, the Washington State Department of Health closed Pierce County beaches from the King County line south to Day Island, including Hale Passage and Wollochet Bay, on Wednesday. The Washington State Department of Health had previously closed the shoreline from Gig Harbor to the Kitsap County line and this closure remains in effect. These areas are closed to the recreational harvest of all shell- sh.

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is posting advisory signs at Dash Point County Park, Brown's Point Park, Owens Beach, Point De ance boathouse, Narrows Park, Day Island marina, Wol-lochet Bay boat launch, and Fox Island Bridge, warn-ing people to not collect shell sh from these areas. An advisory sign has already been posted at Sunrise Beach County Park. The closure includes clams, oys-ters, mussels, scallops and other species of mollusks. Crabs and shrimp are not included in the closure. Commercial beaches are sampled separately and commercial products should be safe to eat.

PSP poisoning, which can be life-threatening, is caused by eating shell sh containing a potent neu-rotoxin. A naturally occurring marine organism pro-duces the toxin. The toxin is not destroyed by cook-ing or freezing.

A person cannot determine if PSP toxin is pres-ent by visual inspection of the water or shell sh. For this reason, the term "red tide" is misleading and inaccurate. PSP can only be detected by laboratory testing. Conditions are changing rapidly and there will likely be more areas closed in the very near future. Therefore, recreational shell sh harvesters are advised to call the Department of Health Biotox-in Hotline at 1-800-562-5632 or access the Biotoxin Web site at doh.wa.gov/ehp/sf/biotoxin.htm before harvesting shell sh anywhere in Puget Sound.

Five-day closure of Hall Road boat launch in Vaughn planned; ramp to be rehabilitated

The boat launch on Hall Road at Vaughn will be closed July 30 to August 3 so Pierce County can re-habilitate the ramp. Crews will replace the existing ramp structure with concrete panels purchased from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In addition to the ve-day closure, the ramp will

be closed for brief periods throughout August for ad-ditional maintenance. During the closure, boaters may use the following county-operated launch sites: A Street KPS in Home, 72nd Street KPS near Long-branch, and Randall Drive NW near Gig Harbor.

Volunteers need for Chemical Dependency Advisory Board

Pierce County Community Connections is seek-ing applicants to ll vacancies on the Chemical De-pendency Advisory Board. The board advises Pierce County on matters relating to the development and operation of publicly funded substance abuse treat-ment and prevention services for the citizens of Pierce County, and acts as an advocacy body to pro-mote the interests of recipients of these services.

Positions are open to individuals residing in Pierce County who have an interest in issues re-lated to substance abuse treatment and prevention. Recovered substance abusers are encouraged to ap-ply. The board also welcomes applicants from all mi-nority groups.

State law prohibits chemical dependency treat-ment providers, their employees or board members from serving on the County Chemical Dependency Advisory Board.

The Board meets bi-monthly from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 3602 Paci c Avenue in Tacoma. More information is online at co.pierce.wa.us/pc/services/health/chemdep/cdab.htm.

Volunteer needed for Civil Service Commis-sion

Pierce County is seeking applicants to ll a vacan-cy on the Civil Service Commission for Sheriff's De-partment employees. Commissioners are appointed by the County Executive and serve a six-year term. The commission is a quasi-judicial body responsible for rules and regulations governing examinations, appointments, appeals and other general personnel issues.

Commissioners are required to attend one month-ly meeting, or special meetings as required, and serve on a voluntary basis. Commission members must be a resident of Pierce County for a minimum of two years prior to appointment, registered to vote in Pierce County and a United States citizen.

For more information or application materi-als, visit the Civil Service Commission Web site at co.pierce.wa.us/pc/Abtus/ourorg/pers/csmainpage.htm or contact Sandy Pietz, Chief Examiner, Pierce County Civil Service Commission, at (253)798-6250 or [email protected].

Pierce Transit this weekend will roll out the rst eight of 20 state-funded vans to vanpool groups heading to Joint Base Lewis McCord (JBLM) for their commute. Pierce Transit obtained the vans through the Vanpool Investment Program Grant, a competitive grant from Washington State Depart-ment of Transportation (WSDOT). The grant is spe-ci cally aimed at easing congestion on the I-5 cor-ridor near and around JBLM.

With increasing population at JBLM, as well as in Pierce and Thurston counties, the I-5 corridor be-tween Tacoma and Olympia has become one of the most congested corridors in the state, according to Pierce Transit Government Relations Of cer Justin D. Leighton. In 2010, I-5 commuters found them-selves sitting in nine-mile backups that doubled or tripled their commute time. Recognizing the con-

gestion, JBLM and WSDOT have funded congestion relief projects to help mitigate traf c impacts and improve travel time by adding traf c cameras, ramp meters and on-base traf c ow improvements. The 20 new vans are part of that continuing strategy to mitigate traf c congestion along the corridor. Once all 20 vans are active they will help remove over 200 single-occupant vehicles from the corridor daily.

"We are excited to get on the road," said Rich Eve-land, volunteer primary driver from Enumclaw to JBLM. "It will be great to have the vanpool."

Pierce Transit's vanpool program was established in 1986 with seven vans. Today the program has a eet of 326 vehicles serving more than 2,500 cus-tomers. A roll-out celebration is scheduled Sat., July 28 at 10 a.m. at the Pierce Transit Training Center located at 3720 96th Street SW in Lakewood.

HELP FIGHT HUNGER• Volunteer your time. • Donate money or stock.•Coordinate a food drive at your office,

school, place of worship or social club.• Make a donation in someone’s name.• Designate FISH Food Banks

through your workplace giving program.

Volunteers are the backbone of FISH Food BanksLast year, FISH volunteers contributed 46,405 hours. This is an equivalent of

nearly 23 full time employees. If FISH had to pay for these hours at a minimum wageof $7.16 it would have cost $332,260.

The FISH volunteers sent food home for more than 186,000 individuals last yearand deserve a hugh THANK YOU from the Board of Directors, staff andcommunity. The families needing food can now concentrate on other aspects of theirlives such as finding a job or getting training without the pains of hunger. FISH couldnot have made such a huge difference in our neighborhoods without you! If you wishto help FISH please call 253-383-3164 and we will direct you to a food bank.

FISHFOODBANKS OFPIERCECOUNTY

NEEDSA new location for a food bank is needed.Currently one of our food banks is located atTrinity Presbyterian Church. Trinity was very kindto let us utilize their church on a temporarybasis, one and a half years ago, and now we needa larger location. If anyone knows of a locationwith about 1,000 sq ft from South 25th toNorth 25th and from Yakima to the Soundplease give FISH Central a call at 383-3164.
