The sub- station will support the increased power demands of larger container cranes, and is part of an upgrade project to modernize two Port of Tacoma piers in or- der to handle larger container ships expected to call on Tacoma in the future. According to Port of Tacoma officials, ocean carri- ers are increasingly moving to larger ships in an ef- fort to contain costs, remain competitive, and provide economies of scale to reduce the per-container cost of moving cargo across the ocean.
