on the nearly 17-acre Larchmont Wetland Reserve to reduce � ooding in the surrounding neighborhood and provide habitat for wildlife and improve the quality of stormwater runoff.
The Pierce County Public Works and Utilities project is located east of McKinley Avenue East and between 91st and 96th streets. Work on the site in-cludes modi� cation of drainage ditches on the prop-erty that impact existing wetlands. Crews will also excavate a seasonal pond to provide habitat for ani-mals that depend on wetlands.
"The Larchmont Wetland Reserve project is in-tended to help families and community members all along Clover Creek feel more secure during storms when a lot of rain is coming down," said Pierce Coun-ty Public Works and Utilities Surface Water Man-agement division manager Harold Smelt. "Not only will this project store excess water during storms, it will also provide habitat and an alternative means of compensating for wetland impacts from certain development projects."
This wetland project is proposed as a "bank" to help public projects and private developers mitigate for impacts to wetlands on construction projects in the same basin. Qualifying public and private proj-ects located in the same basin would pay a fee toward developing and maintaining these wetland areas, like Larchmont, and relieve the project developers from any further mitigation burden. The In Lieu
Fee Program is in development pending approval by Pierce County Council and state agencies.
A branch of the north fork of Clover Creek � ows across the property and is an important part of the plan. Most of the $704,000 project is slated for com-pletion in September, though native plantings will be installed later in the fall. A grant from the Wash-
ington State Department of Ecology is funding the project. Active Construction, Inc. of Tacoma is the contractor.

Pierce County to begin Larchmont Wetland Reserve project
Posted online Weds., July 10Downtown On The Go will continue its
Walk Tacoma series next week with a free walking tour that will highlight Tacoma's rich history in candy making along a 1.1-mile walking route.
The tour, which will be held on Weds., July 17 between noon and 1 p.m., will start at Tollefson Plaza, located at South 17th Street and Paci� c Avenue, and head to the Dome District, with a ride back on Tacoma's Link light rail. Participants will learn about Tacoma's sweet side from historian and author Ron Magden. Along the route, partici-pants will also be able to sample some of Tacoma's � nest candies and baked goods. The walk event is free and there is no need to pre-register.
Walk Tacoma is an eight-event walking se-ries held on the � rst and third Wednesdays
from April through August. The fun, themed walks, now in their fourth year, encourage
downtown employees and residents to exercise and enjoy the outdoors by discovering the different walking routes and parks in downtown Ta-coma. The walks are scheduled at the lunch hour and just after work to en-courage downtown employees to walk during their workday, whether it is to and from work, at a lunch break, or to a nearby meeting.
