long celebration of the Tacoma Dome by opening a time capsule placed at the iconic building 30 years ago.

The City-owned Tacoma Dome opened its doors to the public on April 21, 1983, as one of the larg-est wood-domed structures in the world. Today it can accommodate approximately 23,000 guests in a variety of con gurations, making it the largest indoor venue in the state of Washington, accord-ing to City of Tacoma Public Assembly Facilities Director Kim Bedier.

"The Dome has become an iconic symbol wit-nessed by millions as they drive by on Interstate-5 and visited by millions as they rocked, rolled, graduated, wrestled and grew up under its rec-ognizable roof," notes Bedier. "Postcards, T-shirts and photographs have all immortalized the Dome as a symbol of the spirit of Tacoma."

Beginning last year, the City presented a series of celebratory activities, including a campaign entitled Dome30: Share the Memories, where Ta-coma residents were invited to share their fondest memories of the Tacoma Dome, either by e-mailing [email protected] or by visiting a video booth during events at the Tacoma Dome. In addi-tion, the interior of the Tacoma Dome was trans-formed into a living time line, highlighted with recollections, photos, and Dome memorabilia.

The time capsule opening begins on Sat., Jan. 18, at 9 a.m. when City of cials plan to re-dedi-cate Brotman Street near D Street. From there, the public is invited to the Tacoma Dome Exhi-bition Hall entrance to watch the time capsule opening following a short ceremony with remarks from local elected of cials.
