What Is National Health Center Week?

Background

National Health Center Week (NHCW) has been celebrated for more

than 30 years and organized and coordinated through the National As-

sociation of Community Health Centers (NACHC). Early on, health

centers as part of NACHC recognized the benefits of joining together

in a week of celebration to showcase their programs and deliver a

strong message nationwide for their health centers and patients.

Why is National Health Center Week important?

National Health Center gives health centers a chance to bring light to

the health needs in our communities and the important role health cen-

ters play in meeting those needs. Health Center Week has become a

powerful tool to rally public support for the health centers program.

Public support and confidence in our programs translates into legisla-

tive victories, positive administrative policies with the public and pri-

vate sectors. This enables health centers to serve greater needs and

lead this nation to a more equitable health delivery system for all peo-

ple.

National Health Center Week Goals

The goals of National Health Center Week are twofold: To enhance

the visibility and profile of Community, Migrant, and Homeless, Pub-

lic Housing and School-Based Health Centers; and to generate com-

munity pride and build support for the health centers program. It is a

great opportunity for health centers to speak out telling the story of

their community-based model of care and creating public awareness of

what they do and how they do it.

The In’s & Out’s of Social Media Usage

Are you looking for ways to market and promote your National Health

Center week event? Why not use Social Media? Social Media is a

very powerful tool and an efficient way to bring attention to any type

of social event. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter

have become an effective way to foster engagements, increase visibil-

ity, promote social and private events, and encourage community par-

ticipation.

Social media allows for broader reach and contact with a more diverse

audience. Here are a few tips to help get you started.

Tips

Interaction is key

Stay active and keep your audience updated

Use casual speech, but not too casual

Being too formal can intimidate or discourage interaction

Use direct and active language

Use graphics to your advantage

Use more than one platform

Use caution when posting—remember that anything you post to so-

cial media may be seen by anybody and will be out there forever

Page 6: Tachc Nhcw 2014 Toolkit

Page 6 NHCW 2014 Toolkit

The In’s & Out’s of Social Media Usage

Facebook

When planning events, Facebook is a great tool to use because it al-

lows you to add as much information as possible about the event.

Make sure not to add so much information that people forget the

value of attending. If people

they’ve already learned every-

thing about the event beforehand,

they may not attend. On this plat-

form, your greatest strength is cu-

riosity. Make sure to add enough

information so your audience is

well enough informed to spread

the message, but not enough to where they can predict how the

event will play out.

Some of the information you can include when posting an event to

Facebook include: Name of Event, Details, Location, Date & Time,

Specific Audience.

Specific Audience is a great tool to use because it allows you to

choose who you advertise your event to.

Twitter

Twitter is unique in the way it operates when compared to other social

media platforms. The biggest, yet noticeable difference is that Twitter

restricts you to only posting 140 characters.

Page 7: Tachc Nhcw 2014 Toolkit

Page 7 NHCW 2014 Toolkit

The In’s & Out’s of Social Media Usage

The biggest, yet noticeable difference is that Twitter restricts you to

only posting 140 characters.

This is both a blessing and a

curse as it forces you to

grasp the interest of your

audience in as few words as

possible. Remember, Keep

It Sweet and Simple!

Whereas this is good for

building creativity, it makes things much more difficult when de-

ciding what information is the most important and what would gain

the most interest.

The best way to use Twitter in promoting events is to use it in con-

junction with another platform. You can easily use Facebook to pro-

vide detailed information about the post and Twitter to further pro-

mote the event. Use a graphic with more information to help flesh

out your post or a combination of the two. Make sure that if you’re

using a graphic to use something eye-catching graphic that includes

the event information.

You can also set up Facebook posts to post on Twitter. Follow the

steps below to link the two accounts together.

Log into your Twitter account

Go to Settings Profile Click on Link to Facebook

Enter your Facebook credentials

The In’s & Out’s of Social Media Usage

Hashtags are your #friend! Using hashtags allows you to categorize

your content and add a creative edge to your posts. These can also

pinpoint the more important parts of your post. Here is a the main

hashtag TACHC will be using this week during National Health

Center Week.

#NHCW2014

How to Engage your Audience

Interaction is KEY! Create friendly and casual posts when promoting

an event to encourage your audience to like, share, and comment on

the event. The tone you use is determined by the environment in

which you work. Be aware that different workplaces require different

tones when addressing your audience. Some workplaces prefer a more

professional and formal tone than a friendly and casual tone. Framing

your posts as questions is also a very good tactic as it leaves the post

open for replies. Here are some examples!

Casual

Professional

Creating/Managing Events

National Health Center Week is the perfect opportunity for health cen-

ters to showcase what programs or events they have going on. This is

also a wonderful opportunity to get your elected officials to come out

to your health center, thank them for their continuous support or intro-

duce them to the work your health center accomplishes in your com-

munity. If you’re stuck trying to figure out what kind of events you

can set up, here are a few ideas of past health centers events.

Example Ideas

Flash mob

Art contest or Photo/Video Contest

Health fair

Back to school screenings and sports physicals

Voter Registration drive

Fun Run and free exercise class demonstrations

Inviting Elected Officials

ships and educates elected officials about your health center and the im-

portant services you provide to the community. Be sure to invite elected

officials at all levels: local (city and county), state and federal.

NACHC provides an easy tool to invite Members of Congress to visit your

health center. Use this link to invite your Members of Congress: http://

Be sure to let TACHC know if a state or federal elected official accepts

your invitation. Please share that information with TACHC Communica-

tions Director Andrea Abel, [email protected]
